Momtaz 1. Nouveaux PRODUITS, nouveaux MATERIAUX JPK reports on the use of SPM in the Messersmith Group at UC Berkeley looking at biologically inspired polymer adhesives Dr. Phillip Messersmith is the Class of 1941 Professor in the Departments of Bioengineering and Materials Science and Engineering at the University of California at Berkeley. His research group is interested in understanding structure-processingproperty relationships of materials in biological systems, and in using this information to inform the design, synthesis and application of biologically inspired synthetic materials used in a variety of practical applications. Current projects include molecular mechanochemical studies of biological wet adhesives, the design of biomimetic wet adhesive polymers and polymer composites, the control of biointerfacial phenomena in nanosystems and in antifouling surface coatings, and the development of novel biomaterials for regenerative medicine. One of the Group members, Dr Yang Wei, describes how they started to use JPK's range of SPM systems in a project about biologically inspired polymer adhesives. The goal is to understand wet biological adhesion and then to develop biologically inspired surgical adhesives for use in medicine and dentistry. Measuring forces of interaction between proteins and polymers and surfaces are crucial to understanding how organisms such as the mussel are capable of attaching to underwater surfaces. To achieve these measurements, atomic force microscopy has been applied to provide a very convenient way of performing biophysical studies of mussel adhesive proteins. In this work, multiple force-extension curves have been measured. Typical of this work, a single polymer chain containing the DOPA functional group adapted from mussel adhesive proteins is pulled from a surface using an AFM tip, (see diagram). This experiment was then automated with the use of JPK's ForceRobot®300 system. Speaking of its performance, Dr Wei said, “I specifically enjoy using this fully automated force spectroscope with automated laser and detector alignment which provides high 2 Juillet 2015 quality in terms of maximum sum values and lowest Z-sensor noise level in force data output.” For more details about JPK's NanoWizard® AFM and ForceRobot®300 systems and their applications for the bio & nano sciences, please contact JPK in the USA on (408) 807 8878 and in Germany on +49 30726243 500. Techniques de synthèse: matières premières, procédés, outils Cost-saving PLA process moves from lab to industrial-scale production Researchers at the KU Leuven Centre for Surface Chemistry and Catalysis (Leuven, Belgium) have developed a process that eliminates a step in the production of polylactic acid (PLA) and reduces waste. The patent on the technology was recently sold to a chemical company that intends to apply the production process on an industrial scale. PLA is derived from renewable sources, such as corn, and is industrially compostable and recyclable, if it is appropriately collected and sorted. Because it is biocompatible, the material has medical applications, and it is also one of the few materials that is suitable for 3D printing. Polylactic acid is derived from renewable sources, such as corn. Image courtesy photomyheart/freedigitalphotos.net Despite these desirable properties, uptake of the material as an alternative to traditional petroleum-based plastics has been hampered because of the steep production costs. The production process for PLA is expensive because of the intermediary steps, as Professor Bert Sels from the Centre for Surface Chemistry and Catalysis explains in a news release from the university. "First, lactic acid is fed into a reactor and converted into a type of pre-plastic under high temperature and in a vacuum. This is an expensive process. The pre-plastic—a low-quality plastic—is then broken down into building blocks for PLA. Even though PLA is considered a green plastic, the various intermediary steps in the production process still require metals and produce waste," says Sels. KU Leuven researchers developed a new technique that involves applying a petrochemical concept to biomass. "We speed up and guide the chemical process in the reactor with zeolite as a catalyst," explains postdoctoral researcher Michiel Dusselier. "Zeolites are porous minerals. By selecting a specific type on the basis of its pore shape, we were able to convert lactic acid directly into the building blocks for PLA without making the larger by-products that do not fit into the zeolite pores," says Dusselier. 3 Juillet 2015 Compared with conventional techniques, the technology produces more PLA with less waste and without using metals. And by eliminating a step in the production process, the cost of the material is reduced. Our intention is not to promote the use of disposable plastics, stresses Sels. "But products made of PLA can now become cheaper and greener. Our method is a great example of how the chemical industry and biotechnology can join forces," he adds. The university did not disclose the name of the company that has purchased the patent. A paper on the technology has been published in Science under the title, "Shapeselective zeolite catalysis for bioplastics production." In the journal Angewandte Chemie, American scientists have now introduced a two-step, one-pot conversion of CO2 and epoxides to polycarbonate block copolymers that contain both water-soluble and hydrophobic regions and can aggregate into nanoparticles or micelles. CO2 and epoxides (highly reactive compounds with a three-membered ring made of two carbon atoms and one oxygen atom) can be polymerized to form polycarbonates in reactions that use special catalysts. These processes are a more environmentally friendly alternative to conventional production processes and have already been introduced by several companies. However, because current CO2-based polycarbonates are hydrophobic and have no functional groups, their applications are limited. In particular, biomedical applications, an area where the use of biocompatible polycarbonates is well established, have been left out. A team led by Donald J. Darensbourg along with graduate student Yanyan Wang at Texas 4 Juillet 2015 A&M University (USA) has provided a solution. For the first time, the researchers have been able to produce amphiphilic polycarbonate block copolymers in which both the hydrophilic and hydrophobic regions are based on CO2. They were also able to incorporate a variety of functional and charged groups into the polymers. Because it is very difficult to find building blocks to make hydrophilic polycarbonates, the researchers used a trick: they polymerized first and attached the water-soluble groups afterwards. The entire process is even a “one-pot reaction”: The researchers first produce the hydrophobic regions by polymerizing CO2 and propylene oxide (as the epoxide component). In the same vessel, they then change to a different building block, allyl glycidyl ether (AGE), an epoxide with a double bond in its side chain, and continue the polymerization. The AGE-containing polymer grows on both ends of the existing polycarbonate, leading to a triblock copolymer. The length of the blocks can be controlled precisely. Subsequently a “thiol–ene click reaction” can be used to simply “click” a water-soluble group into place at the double bond. This makes it possible to attach acidic and/or basic groups that carry a positive or negative charge in certain pH ranges. Some of the amphiphilic polycarbonates made by this method are able to aggregate into particles or micelles in a self-organization process. This, and the ability to attach bioactive substances, for example, could provide many more possibilities for biomedical applications. Source: http://www.azonano.com/news.aspx?newsID=33377 Newly Developed Polymers Control Size of Nanoparticles during Production Process This method is simple and efficient and does not require complicated devices and equipment. The study has been carried out at laboratorial scale. In general, production of nanoparticles is very complicated and a wide range of variables can affect the properties of the final products. Obtaining dispersed nanoparticles and the ability to control their structure are very important in the production of zinc oxide nanoparticles. These objectives can be reached by creating an appropriate coating or stabilizing agent in the production process. In this research, a new polymer was tested and studied in order to control the size of particles in the synthesis of zinc oxide nanoparticles. In fact, laboratorial studies resulted in the synthesis, characterization and investigation of cellular toxicity in zinc oxide nanoparticles on a bed of polyethyleneimene (PEI). Results can be used in the introduction of simple and effective methods for the synthesis of nanoparticles. Cellular toxicity test on Neuro2A showed that the synthesized zinc oxide nanoparticles, which have an average size of 25 nanometers, do not have cellular toxicity up to about 6.25 micrograms per milliliter; therefore, these nanoparticles can be used in applied medical studies. 5 Juillet 2015 Results of the research have been published in Ceramics International, vol. 41, issue 8, 2015, pp. 10222-10226. These processes need to be efficient and result in products with properties similar to traditional plastics, whilst also being capable of competing in price with these traditional plastics. For this purpose, AIMPLAS, the Plastics Technology Centre, is undertaking the SINTEPOL project, which is co-funded by the ERDF and IVACE. The main objective of the project is to develop new biopolymer synthesis and modification routes in a single stage by means of reactive extrusion processes. In this way, real and competitive production processes for biopolymers can be achieved in the future, enabling such products to be sold on the market. A specific aim is to increase knowledge of reactive extrusion processes and the introduction of chemical modifications in biopolymers, with a view to improving their mechanical properties and obtaining materials suitable for highly demanding applications, whilst providing high added value in competition with conventional plastics. Work on the SINTEPOL project in 2014 focused on improving the plasticity and thermal resistance of biopolyesters. Two approaches were adopted for the purpose of enhancing the plasticity of PLA: one was through plasticizers derived from fatty acids by means of reactive extrusion processes, and the other was through the synthesis of new plasticizers in order to make them fully compatible with PLA. Systèmes intelligents R.A.S. 8 Juillet 2015 b. Polymères pour l’électronique Mitsubishi makes first bio-based plastic smartphone screen Japanese electronics maker Sharp Corp. is commercializing the world’s first bio-based plastic smartphone front panel screen, using Mitsubishi Chemical Corp.’s bio-based polycarbonate Durabio. Tokyo-based Mitsubishi said in a July 6 news release that the screen will be in Sharp’s new Aquos Crystal 2 smartphone, which will go on sale from Japan’s Softbank Corp. starting in mid-July. “The choice marks a world-first as bio-based engineering plastic has ever been used on the front panel of any smartphone,” Mitsubishi said. “Most front panels of smartphones are made of glass, and their susceptibility to cracking has been an ongoing problem.” The material also overcomes some shortcomings of traditionally available plastics that smartphone makers have been studying as potential glass replacements, as those materials have a hard time having both good optical properties and resistance to cracking, Mitsubishi said. The company said Durabio is made from plant-derived isosorbide, which is made from glucose, as a comonomer replacing bisphenol A, and has higher resistance to heat, impact and weather than conventional engineering plastics. The material is also used in interior and exterior auto components in Mazda and Suzuki vehicles, the company said. Among them, graphabstr500polymers containing transition metal complexes (metallopolymers) have been widely investigated for applications in light emitting devices, in particular polymers containing iridium or ruthenium complexes. However, more recently many researches have been focusing their attention on complexes of low cost, more abundant and non-toxic metals, such as zinc. At the University of Naples Federico II and at the Ben-Gurion University of the Negev, researchers are working on the physics and chemistry of zinc(II) complexes with multidentate conjugated ligands. These compounds feature variable nuclearity and symmetry, and a light emission strongly dependent on the coordination environment. The research team recently prepared metallopolymers by chemically grafting zinc(II) complexes onto commercial polyvinylpyridine. They obtained processable, homogeneous, stable and soluble materials through an easy synthetic route. Phase separation or undesirable local structuring often associated with doped polymeric systems could be avoided. By varying the tridentate ligand structure and the grafting concentration, the photoluminescence performance of the thin solid films could be tuned in both brightness and colour. Intense emission with unprecedented photoluminescence quantum yield was observed. An effective colour tuning of the emission from blue to red was evidenced depending on the strength of the electron acceptor group on the tridentate ligand. The noteworthy emission performance makes these zinc based metallopolymers suitable for photonic devices. Source: http://www.materialsviews.com/tuning-color-better-organic-light-emitters/ c. Revêtement de surface NEI Announces the Issuance of Multiple Patents on Self-Healing & Superhydrophobic Coatings NEI Corporation announced today that the US Patent and Trademark Office has issued patents to the company on self-healing, superhydrophobic, and abrasion resistant coatings. With the allowance of five patents and the introduction of an array of coating products, 10 Juillet 2015 NEI’s concerted efforts to develop and implement practical, multi-functional coatings are now coming to fruition. There is great interest in functional coatings, for both industrial and consumer applications, when the coating or surface treatment provides functionalities beyond the usual protective and aesthetic properties. For example, self-healing coatings autonomously repair damage, hydrophobic coatings are able to vigorously repel water droplets, oleophobic coatings prevent “oil” molecules from sticking to the surface, and self-cleaning or easy-to-clean coatings minimize or eliminate the need for chemicals during washing. Commercial products to date have met with limited success because they are not engineered to meet all of the functional performance requirements that an application may need. NEI’s patented and patent-pending technologies address this market need. In the recent past, NEI has introduced several coatings under the registered trade name NANOMYTE®. For example, NANOMYTE® MEND is based on US Patent 8,987,352, where a thermally induced physical self-healing phenomenon leads to gap closing and crack sealing. The self-healing coating involves a unique phase-separated morphology that facilitates the delivery of the self-healing agent to the damage site (such as a scratch or crack) thereby restoring the coating appearance & function. In response to the need for waterborne, self-healing coatings for non-metallic substrates, NEI has developed a waterborne, polyurethane-based, self-healing coating (US Patent 8,664,298). A more recent patent-pending version of MEND, referred to as MEND-RT, allows self-healing at near ambient temperature. It is used as the inter-layer of a coating stack and has been shown to enhance the corrosion resistance of traditional coating systems. The MEND coating platform is based on polyurethane, but the principle can be applied to other coating systems as well. Self-healing principles can also be applied to surface treatments of metals, whereby the pretreatments can mimic the performance of chromate conversion coatings. To this end, NEI has developed a series of pretreatments for different metals where a chemical selfhealing mechanism imparts corrosion resistance. For example, NANOMYTE® PT-60 is a patent-pending conversion coating for use on magnesium alloys. The nanoscale structure of the surface allows ions to diffuse to the damage site, forming a barrier that prevents further corrosion. In addition, PT-60 has been engineered to act as a tie layer that bonds the overlying primer with the metal, resulting in excellent field performance. Similarly, NEI’s NANOMYTE® PT-10M provides self-healing protection for aluminum, while patent-pending PT-20 is designed for use on steel, and PT-30 (US Patent 8,741,074) is used on copper alloys. As previously mentioned, combining multiple functionalities in a coating, such as selfhealing and superhydrophobicity, presents new opportunities not available until now. For example, NEI has been issued a patent (US Patent 8,968,459) for a superhydrophobic coating composition that also has a self-healing function similar to that of plant leaves. This self-healing, superhydrophobic coating mimics lotus leaves, which maintain their superhydrophobicity by repairing the damaged surface layer with a continuously-secreting hydrophobic epicuticular wax. Equipped with the ability to repair or renew itself, the novel NEI coating overcomes the durability problem of 11 Juillet 2015 traditional superhydrophobic coatings. Most recently, NEI was awarded a patent for a transparent and scratch resistant coating (US Patent 9,006,370) for use on plastic substrates, including polycarbonate and acrylic. NANOMYTE® SR-100 is a hardcoat that exhibits significantly better abrasion resistance than commercially available scratch resistant coating products. Scratch resistance is a sought-after property for coatings in a variety of applications, such as 3-D printed objects, ophthalmic and sports-wear lenses, automobile and airplane windows. Energie Crystalsol Successfully Develops Fully Printed Flexible Solar Cells Using Cambrios Silver Nanowires Vienna, Austria-based flexible photovoltaic film (PV) innovator, crystalsol GmbH, and Cambrios Technologies, the Sunnyvale, CA-based leader in silver nanowire technology, today announced that crystalsol has successfully developed fully printed flexible solar cells using silver nanowires from Cambrios. Solar cells from the pilot production line at crystalsol are shipping into low volume consumer products. crystalsol expects large volume product shipment into building integrated photovoltaics market to begin in the near future. "Our proprietary printed solar cell technology successfully achieves highly efficient solar cells that are thin, lightweight and flexible allowing our solar films to be integrated into building facades, chassis of vehicles as well as clothing/accessories for consumer applications," said crystalsol CEO Rumman Syed. "The highly conductive ClearOhm® silver nanowires from Cambrios enables us to move to a fully printed solar cell architecture and achieve the high throughput and cost structure required for success in this competitive market segment." crystalsol's thin film-based photovoltaic (PV) module production process is based on roll-to-roll printing, enabling high throughputs and exceptional cost structure. This improved production approach is expected to reach large scale within the next 18 months. "The entire thrust of the PV film industry is driving down large-scale production costs while exceeding the performance of traditional PV technologies," added Cambrios President & CEO John LeMoncheck. "Our two companies are bringing added value by pushing this technology further and faster into the building integrated thin-film PV market segments." Source: http://www.azonano.com/news.aspx?newsID=33289 12 Juillet 2015 New polymer able to store energy at higher temperatures A team of researchers at the Pennsylvania State University has created a new polymer that is able to store energy at higher temperatures than conventional polymers without breaking down. In their paper published in the journal Nature, the team describes how they created the polymer and why they believe it could be useful in many products. Harry Ploehn with the University of South Carolina offers a brief history of polymers created for use in electronics, in a News & Views piece in the same journal issue, and describes the work done by the team on this new effort—he also offers an opinion on the prospects for the newly development polymer. As Ploehn notes, dielectric capacitors are used in wide variety of applications that require holding onto a charge and then offering a short burst of power when needed. In many applications dielectrics are made of polymers (because they are light, relatively easy to make and because defects can be easily controlled), but there are still some areas where they cannot be used because they cannot function correctly under temperature extremes—that prevents their use inside car engines, for example. In this new effort, the researchers have taken a new approach to creating a polymer that allows for use in extremely hot applications. The new polymer was created by the team by adding nanometer-scale sheets of boron nitride to a conventional polymer, which testing showed increased its energy density by 400 percent (which means capacitors made using it could be smaller and thus lighter). And testing also showed the newly improved polymer was able to remain stable at temperatures as high as 300°C, and was able to withstand rigorous bending. One drawback of the new polymer is that because it requires an extra step, its production costs would be higher than for conventional dielectric polymer capacitors, and there are also still questions about how easy it would be to prevent defects and whether it will stand up to long term wear and tear. If it proves to be resilient and a way can be found to drive down costs, it is likely, Ploehn believes, that the new polymer will have a bright future in applications ranging from hybrid cars to aerospace systems. Source: http://phys.org/news/2015-07-polymer-energy-higher-temperatures.html e. The polymer is set to pave the way for similar synthetic structures that mimic the properties of natural antifreeze proteins. Antifreeze proteins have been a hot topic since they were first discovered in Antarctic fish in the 1960s. They have a wide range of potential applications in aerospace, the food industry and in biomedicine, where they are used in cryopreservation. During cryopreservation, cells and tissues are stored at sub-zero temperatures and thawed before use. However, frozen cells can be damaged as they defrost. When ice melts, it can refreeze into larger crystals that puncture cells from the outside. This process, called recrystallisation, is especially damaging for organs and blood bags, which defrost over a long time. Read the full article in Chemistry World. Techniques d'ANALYSE de calcul et de CARACTERISATION, études TOXICOLOGIQUES High-Resolution Transmission Electron Microscopy Helps Visualize Organic Molecular Interaction at the Atomic Level Organic materials are increasingly being applied in cutting-edge technologies. Organic semiconductors, for example, are being used to develop paper-thin, plastic LED screens. Materials scientists need to understand the structures and physical properties of organic materials at the atomic level to optimize the efficiency and increase the life span of devices that incorporate them. Previously used techniques for this purpose have had their limitations although highresolution transmission electron microscopy (HR-TEM) has recently successfully been used to visualize the structures, movements and reactions of single, small organic 26 Juillet 2015 molecules. Now, for the first time, a team of researchers from Kyoto University's Institute for Integrated Cell-Material Sciences (iCeMS) and Japan's National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology together with colleagues from Finland's Tampere University of Technology has successfully used HR-TEM to visualize a certain type of organic molecular interaction at the atomic level. They linked pyrene, a hydrocarbon composed of four flat benzene rings, to a singlewalled carbon nanotube that the researchers used as a scaffold for this purpose. They then used HR-TEM to see the link. "This same methodology can be used to study any organic molecules that contain an aryl group," says Tomokazu Umeyama, the study's lead investigator. An aryl group is a group of atoms derived from benzene by removing a hydrogen atom. "The methodology has the potential to provide indispensible information regarding molecular interactions," he says.
