SUMMARY
Salvador Dalí had an obsession for science that lasted his entire life. This can be seen in his paintings, which
reflect every major discovery of the 20th Century. His signature is directly influenced by a scientific image.
Dalí read scientific literature compulsively, from psychoanalysis to quantum mechanics, and mathematics to
genetics. Moreover, he strove all his life to meet relevant scientists: Sigmund Freud, James D. Watson (codiscoverer of the structure of DNA, Nobel prize 1962), Ilya Prigogine (Nobel prize chemistry 1977), Severo
Ochoa (Nobel prize physiology 1959).
He befriended researchers in physics, mathematics, biology and other disciplines. Scientists were surprised to
discover that beyond the façade of a clownish showman was a brilliant artist with whom they could have
meaningful discussions at the crossroads of art and science.
Dalí's obsession for science is one of the aspects of his quest for transcendence. The painter, who never hid his fear
of death, longed to create a work of genius that would outlast him. He employed scientific language and concepts
to transcend the tangible world, with the aim of exploring new dimensions beyond real life.
The film features interviews with Dalí in which he speaks about his passion for science together with previously
unseen footage of Dalí with scientists. James D. Watson, Ilya Prigogine and other researchers give their personal
accounts of their relationship with the painter. Art historians highlight the scientific influences that can be found in
a selection of works by Dalí.
THE DALI DIMENSION reveals a completely unknown aspect of one of the most important figures of the 20th
Century, and gives new insight to interpret some of Dalí’s masterpieces.
