FAREN KHAN
Oriental Klezmer Connection
In the image of the legendary Faren Khan – the mysterious
bandit who once wandered the land from Belarus to Hungary
and Romania – the group leads you through its remarkable and
eccentric universe of song and dance.
Amidst original compositions and traditional melodies from the
Balkans and Mediterranean, we hear influences of Americana,
jazz, the Middle East and India. A nomadic path for a most
nomadic of music…Klezmer music.
Le personnage de l’Errant figure dans tous les contes,
dans tous les mythes, il traverse toutes les cultures;
The character of the wandering figure
that we find in every tale, in every
myth, he traverses all cultures; rich with
multiple pasts, sower of disorder, poet
and musician on occasion, he defies all
borders, rules and laws…
Faren Khan appeared to us like the
turning of a legend; his shadow played
musical images for us and inspired
sounds and stories without end…
Hariklaki *
I saw you last night dear Hariklaki,
You took your organ and went to party,
With all the others who went to party,
Down at the Pasalimani.
Kisses, caresses, dear Hariklaki,
Oh how you mocked me with everybody,
Go, go on now,
you have left me alone.
Once you had a few drinks and then some,
You were rosy, sweet like a plum,
You took the phono and records, you played them,
Dancing and Singing with all who would come.
I’m so jealous and crying, dear Hariklaki,
Oh how you mocked me with everybody,
Go, go on now,
you have left me alone.
One morning, early, you left for Glifada,
With your pretty girlfriend Imada.
Swimming away like a fish in the ocean,
And you’re headed straight for Athens.
I’m so jealous and crying, dear Hariklaki,
Oh how you mocked me with everybody,
Go, go on now,
you have left me alone.

Venus in Furs
Shiny, shiny, shiny boots of leather
Whiplash girlchild in the dark,
Comes in bells your servant, don’t forsake him
Strike dear mistress and cure his heart
Downy sins of streetlight fancies
Chase the costumes she shall wear
Ermine furs adorn imperious
Severin, Severin awaits you there
I am tired, I am weary
I could sleep for a thousand years
A thousand dreams that would awake me
Different colors made of tears
Kiss the boot of shiny shiny leather
Shiny leather in the dark
Tongue the thongs, the belt that does await you
Strike dear mistress and cure his heart
Severin, Severin, speak so slightly
Severin, down on your bended knees
Taste the whip, in love not given lightly
Taste the whip, now bleed…
Die Mame *
My mom went to the market to buy cabbage and fish,
And came back with a girl for me and a gentle kiss,
Oh what a girl she is, so beautiful and sweet,
With white teeth, oh she’s a real kitten.
My mom went to the market to buy our coal,
And came back with a Polish girl, oh what a gentle soul,
Oh what a girl she is, so beautiful and sweet,
With black eyes, my kitten.
I’ve eaten all my almonds, I’ve drunk all my wine,
I fell in love with that girl, I can’t leave her behind,
Oh what a girl she is, so beautiful and sweet,
With black eyes, my kitten.
30e jour
In the morning sun she glows like a lightbulb,
Out of place, beneath the sunny rays,
For 29 and one half days we rode her horses,
She and me.
You know I must go,
My destiny calls.
Play witness to my love,
Give her rides each day.
