Geoffroy Tory and the lessons of Antiquity In Geoffroy Tory’s Flowered field (1529), which is at once a treatise in typography and an essay on the French language, the art of tracing letters helps normalize the language. Antiquity supplies the raw material of an enterprise at the service of Francis Ist’s projects. By renaming Attic letters the Roman capitals, Tory links up the French language to the Greek. The foundation of Paris under the name of Parrhasia by Hercule-Ogmios, and the analogy with the Greek dialects assimilate France to ancient Greece, the source of culture and the arts, in order to counterbalance Rome’s military power as vindicated by the Habsburgs. Tory’s ambitious programme lays the foundation of a theory of culture, as testify the hieroglyphic value of the characters which shows an early influence of the Kabbala, and the very title of the work, a slogan of Platonistic inspiration. “ Through Philip’s fault ” and “ comrades-in-arms ”: investigating the cases of a few scholars in the turmoil of the Second World War Michel Feyel, Pierre Guillon and Fernand Robert, three Antiquity scholars and members of the Ecole Normale who had gone through the Athens French school, had their vivas during the Second World War. The article proposes an inquest around a few “ clandestine phrases ” in those works which can be taken as revealing evidence of actions and attitudes of Resistance from that trio of historians. The inquest starts with an examination of ambiguous inscriptions. It goes on through a setting in perspective and an analysis of the reception of the judgments borne on Philip of Macedonia by one of those scholars. As a matter of fact, this highly negative portrait of that Antique king, strongly influenced by the state of affairs during the second World War, appears as a meditation on the 1940 defeat and can be read as a denunciation of the head of the French State. 328 Anabases 4 2/10/06 17:08 Page 329 RÉSUMÉS The Action Française and the Cercle Fustel de Coulanges at the school of Antiquity (first half of the XXst century). For Charles Maurras, leader of the Action Française, Rome represents the synthesis between the heritage of Antiquity and the Christian, then Catholic, tradition, successively the Rome of the Emperors then the Rome of the Popes. Fustel de Coulanges (1830-1889), a historian of the political institutions of ancient France, who notably demonstrated Roman permanence beyond the Barbarian invasions of the Vth century, could not but seduce the royalist league: in 1905, it celebrated with a flourish the 75th anniversary of its birth. Recuperating Fustel by the extreme right goes on after the First World War. In 1926 a few teachers akin to the Action Française created the Cercle Fustel de Coulanges, invoking in their turn the tutelar figure of the historian of the national reconciliation: according to Fustel the history of France would result in closing the 1789 split, in no longer, at any rate, looking at it as the revenge of the enslaved Gauls over the once victorious Franks. It was that “ Romanist ” view which the members of the Cercle would have liked to see prevailing in the history books of republican schools: for the interpretation of the past was also at stake in the political struggles of the interwar period. Goffredo Coppola, from the studies on Antiquity to the execution of Dongo. Born in 1898, a disciple of Girolamo Vitelli at Florence, Goffredo Coppola was professor of Greek and Latin literature at Bologna University from 1931 onwards. A specialist of Menander and the drama of Antiquity, he was typical of those nationalist intellectuals who adhered to the fascist regime without demur. But Coppola went even further. At the time of the German occupation from September 1943 on, he adhered to the Social Italian Republic, becoming rector of Bologna University, president of the national Institute of fascist culture following the demise of Giovanni Gentile in April 1944; he was also a close collaborator of the occupation authorities. After joining Mussolini at the time of the final collapse in April 1945, he was executed by the partisans and his body was exposed, together with those of the other fascist top-ranking officials on the piazza Loretto in Milan. From Marathon to the victory of Leucate: when the current events of the Roussillon wars invade the learned works of a Toulouse Jesuit. In October 1637 A. Colomiez, a Toulouse printer, published the first translation into Latin of the speeches of the Greek sophist Polemon (c. 87-143 A.D). This work by the Jesuit Pierre Poussines a priori belongs to the restricted circle of erudite publications destined to a lettered public such as the Parliament councillors, to one of whom the preface is inscribed, to the clerics or the students. Now it chanced that the events of the moment and the translator’s peculiar sensitiveness to current events made it that those two speeches on the victory at Marathon came in resonance with the contemporaneous victory of the French over the Spaniards that had taken place at Leucate a few days before. The Jesuit’s Latin preface relates the French success by presenting it as a repeat of the Greek victory, thereby crowning with the glory of the Medic wars the feats of the King’s army. The work accordingly participates in the glorification of Louis XIII’s triumph and echoes the contemporary libels issued by the same printer. That coincidence between current military events and the philologist’s works legitimated his translation and offered an unexpected career to Polemon’s oratory. Jacques Esprit, Seneca and mercy In his treatise La Fausseté des vertus humaines (1678) (the Falseness of human virtues), the Jansenist Jacques Esprit repudiates the Stoic thesis in favour of mercy as expounded by Seneca in the De Clementia… Esprit adopts as his own certain arguments propounded by Seneca in order to attack him personally and ruin his position. Sharing certain views of the Cordoban does not preclude him from remaining fundamentally opposed to his doctrine. He cannot countenance the Senecan presentation of mercy because his reading of Plato and St Augustine leads him to think that it contradicts the demand of justice. His chief objection remains that the merciful king presented as a model in the De Clementia acts out of vanity or sheer interest, and that it cannot be otherwise, since he is not inspired by God’s love. Polybus and Montesquieu: aspects of a reflection on power In that prefatory work to the Esprit des Lois (the Spirit of the laws): the Considérations sur les causes de la grandeur des Romains et de leur décadence (considerations on the causes of the greatness and decadence of the Romans), Montesquieu refers, among other sources, to Polybus’ Histories. Though the two authors have different methods in establishing the facts, neither, however, proposes to his 331 Anabases 4 2/10/06 17:08 Page 332 RÉSUMÉS readers a mere account of Rome’s history. Polybus wants his histories to be formative for politicians in charge, and the Considerations are, according to d’Alembert, “ a Roman history to be of use for statesmen and philosophers ”. Both, therefore, starting from the Roman example, carry out a larger reflection on the nature of power, the conditions for its conquest and maintenance. Accordingly they clearly bring out the trumps which enabled Rome to prevail, her virtues and discipline, her real means and faculty of adaptation, her mores and her tripartite constitution, her behaviour towards the vanquished or the allies. But more generally both warn against the risks which, in domestic as well as foreign policy, necessarily bring about the defeat of any power which enabled it to prevail. Yet, however unavoidable for them is that corruption, they find in the very logic of the process a means to evaluate it, to anticipate it, even to postpone it through a balance of the political powers which can only be a resultant of forces that compensate one another. Composed in the years 1213-1214, the Faits des Romains (Roman Facts) relates a life of Caesar, from a compilation of Latin sources, Sallustus, Caesar, Lucan and Suetonius. As a first history wholly devoted to the Roman leader in the vernacular, the work was a great success, as testify the number of known manuscripts, some sixty of them, as well as its influence in the French and Italian literatures, in the form of straight borrowings or rewritings. The survey of its influence in the encyclopedic, fictional and epic genres enables one to understand the nature of its importance and to size up its contribution beyond the sole field of history.
