Ocean at Roches Noires at the entrance of the Port of
Saint-Gilles, Reunion Island.

water was murky. The Red Flags were flying.

NARRATIVE: Arnaud Dussell had been in the water for 20 minutes when he
saw the shark pass underneath his board. He quickly took his foot out of the
water and seconds later the shark broke his surfboard. Arnaud was back
surfing in the same area 90 minutes later!
INJURY: Minor scratches to his nose, foot and ankle.
DAMAGE TO SURBOARD: The shark bit a big chunk out of the board and
broke it in two pieces.
SPECIES: It was speculated that the incident involved a tiger shark.

Nouvelle attaque de requin : les premiers témoignages
A 15h00, un jeune surfeur a été attaqué par un requin sur la plage des Roches Noires à Saint
Gilles, au niveau de la sortie de la Digue du Port, non loin de la zone de bain. Alertés, les sapeurs
pompiers sont rapidement intervenus sur place, la victime a été médicalisée sur place puis transportée à l’hôpital Gabriel Martin pour un examen de contrôle. Légèrement blessé, le jeune homme
a pu regagner son domicile.
Agé d’une quinzaine d’années, Arnaud s’est fait attaquer par un requin à une centaine de mètres
de la plage, sur le spot des Roches Noires. Par miracle, l’adolescent s’en sort avec quelques
égratignures au niveau du nez et de la cheville.
Selon les premières hypothèses, le jeune surfeur se serait fait attaquer par un requin tigre. En
début d’après midi, ce passionné s’est mis à l’eau avec une bande d’amis alors que le drapeau
rouge flottait sur la plage des Roches Noires.
Après avoir crié au secours, le surfeur a été secouru par les MNS (Maître Nageurs Sauveteurs)
qui ont réussi à le ramener sur la plage grâce à leur jets-ski. Quant à sa planche de surf, elle
garde les stigmates de cette attaque.
Agé de 14 ans, Mattéo est passionné de bodyboard et en cette période de vacances scolaires, il
était également à la plage ce matin. Il explique avoir repéré plusieurs squales, tout comme ses
amis. "Ce matin, on a vu plusieurs ombres ainsi que des ailerons et hier, c’est un surfeur qui nous
a averti qu’il avait repéré un requin" détaille Mattéo. Avant de préciser que l’eau est trouble suite
aux précipitations. La mer est également agitée.

At 15:00, a young surfer was attacked by a shark on the beach of Roches Noires at St. Gilles, at
the exit of the harbor breakwater, near the bathing area. Alerted, the fire brigade were quickly on
the scene The victim was treated medically on site and transported to the hospital Gabriel Martin
for a check-up. Only slightly injured, the young man was able to return home.
At the age of fifteen years, Arnaud was attacked by a shark at a hundred meters from the beach,
on the spot of Roches Noires. Miraculously, the boy escapes with some scratches on the nose
and ankle.
According to initial assumptions, the young surfer may have been attacked by a tiger shark. By
early afternoon, the passion was launched with a bunch of friends when the red flag flew on the
beach of Roches Noires.
After shouting for help, the surfer was rescued by the MNS (lifeguard) who managed to get him on
the beach with their jet-ski. As for his surfboard, it retains the scars of the attack.
14 years old, Matteo has a passion for bodyboarding and in this period of school holidays, it was
also at the beach this morning. He said he spotted several sharks, as his friends. "This morning
we saw several shadows and fins and yesterday a surfer who warned us he had spotted a shark"
said Matteo. Adding that the water is cloudy after rainfall. The sea is rough.

Nouvelle attaque de requin à la Réunion sur un surfeur de 16 ans
On a coutume de dire que la foudre ne frappe jamais deux fois au même endroit. Sur la côte Ouest
de la Réunion, il s’agit pourtant de la troisième attaque de requin fulgurante en quatre mois. Après
Eric Dargent amputé d’une jambe à Trois Roches en février, Eddy Aubert mortellement blessé à
Boucan Canot le mois dernier, c’est un jeune adolescent de 16 ans qui a été victime d’une violente
attaque dont il est ressorti miraculé.
Arnaud Dussel a raconté l’attaque de requin en détails sur le site Internet de Linfo.re dont est tirée
la photo de sa planche explosée par la mâchoire du squale.
L’attaque s’est produite au niveau de la digue à l’extrémité sud du spot des Roches Noires, juste à
l’entrée du Port de Saint-Gilles dont un internaute nous racontait qu’il n’était pas rare d’y croiser
des requins.
L’attaque s’est produite aux alentours de 15 heures, en plein après-midi donc. Le drapeau était
rouge pour raison de forte houle. Arnaud ne surfait pas seul mais avec un groupe d’amis. Pendant
qu’il était dans l’eau, il n’a pas vu le requin mais il a ressenti le requin arriver brusquement par endessous de sa planche. Il a été projeté en arrière dans l’eau. Le requin a croqué dans la planche et
l’a cassée en deux mais Arnaud a eu le réflexe de la projeter en l’attrapant par le tail et en
l’envoyant directement dans la gueule du requin. Il a ensuite appelé ses camarades de session à
l’aide.
Les MNS sont intervenus pour sortir le surfeur de l’eau à l’aide d’un jet-ski. Les sapeurs-pompiers
ont assuré les premiers secours avant que le surfeur ne soit transporté à l’hôpital Gabriel Martin.
Une sirène avait averti les autres surfeurs de sortir de l’eau après l’attaque.
Arnaud a eu très peur et il a vu sa vie défiler. Heureusement pour lui, il ne souffre que de blessures
légères à la cheville et au nez. Arnaud ne retournera pas surfer tout de suite ; il attendra au moins

d’avoir une nouvelle planche car la sienne est maintenant inutilisable, mais il compte bien la garder
en souvenir.
Il y avait eu plusieurs « shark sighting » (plusieurs surfeurs dissent avoir vu des requins) dans la
zone la veille et dans les heures qui ont précédé l’attaque. Les versions divergent sur le rôle
qu’auraient pu jouer d’éventuelles pluies dans les jours précédents.
Huguette Bello, maire de Saint-Paul, a déclaré qu’un arrêté municipal est en vigueur pour interdire
les sports nautiques et la baignade à Roche Noire et à Boucan-Canot.

It is customary to say that lightning never strikes twice in
one place. On the west coast of Reunion, it is
nevertheless the third shark attack in four months
meteoric. After Eric Dargent lost a leg in February in

The attack occurred around 15 hours, right in the afternoon then. The flag was red due to heavy
swell. Arnaud overrated does not alone but with a group of friends. While he was in the water, he
did not see the shark but he felt the shark come abruptly below the board. He was thrown
backwards into the water. The shark has bitten in the plate and broke in two but Arnaud was the
reflex of the project by grabbing the tail and sending it directly into the mouth of the shark. He then
called his fellow session using.
The MNS intervened to get the surfer water using a jet-ski. Firefighters have provided first aid until
the surfer is taken to hospital Gabriel Martin. A siren warned other surfers out of the water after the
attack.
Arnaud was very frightened and he saw his life pass. Fortunately for him, he suffers only minor
injuries to the ankle and nose. Arnaud will not return immediately surf and it will wait at least have a
new board because his is now unusable, but he hopes to keep as a souvenir.
There had been several "shark sighting" (many surfers say they have seen sharks) in the area the
day before and in the hours preceding the attack. The versions differ on the role allegedly played
any rain in previous days.
Huguette Bello, Mayor of St. Paul, said that a bylaw is effective to prevent water sports and
swimming at Black Rock and Boucan-Canot.

Passée la frayeur de l'attaque de requin qui s'est déroulée cet après-midi sur la plage des Roches
Noires, les maître-nageurs sauveteurs racontent les secondes interminables de l'attaque.

Il est 14h50 lorsque les quatre maître-nageurs sauveteurs observent un surfeur s'agiter. "On a vu
le surfeur tomber à l'eau, détaille Vincent, un MNS. On est intervenu dans la seconde qui suit".
Selon lui, l'intervention auprès de la victime de l'attaque s'est faite dans la minute.
Sur le jet-ski posté en bordure de plage, deux sauveteurs partent à la rencontre du jeune surfeur.
"Le surfeur était en état de choc mais heureusement que seule sa planche a subi des dégâts".
Le drapeau rouge était levé
Le lieu de l'attaque de requin se situe exactement en face des escaliers en béton de l'esplanade
des Roches noires, spot très prisé des surfeurs. "Le surfeur, ainsi que sept autres sportifs se trouvaient dans l'eau à ce moment là, à environ 80m du bord".
Pourtant, depuis la prise de poste des MNS ce matin, la flamme rouge avait été hissée. "Il y avait
effectivement une eau trouble due aux quelques pluies de ces derniers jours dans les hauts de
l'Ouest". A 500 mètres du spot de surf se trouve en effet l'embouchure de la ravine Saint-Gilles
qui "a charié le fond", déplore le MNS.
Une attaque en milieu d'après-midi qui surprend
Les gendarmes puis les pompiers prennent alors en charge la victime qui sera dirigée, pour un
simple examen, à l'hôpital Gabriel Martin de Saint-Paul.
Pendant ce temps, les MNS de la côte Ouest, des Brisants jusqu'à Boucan Canot, sortent les jetski pour une patrouille en mer afin d'alerter les surfeurs pas au courant de l'attaque.
Malgré le drapeau rouge, "nous n'avons aucune réglementation pour interdire la pratique du surf",
avoue-t-il.
Pour Vincent, une attaque en milieu d'après-midi, 14h50, était "impensable" jusqu'à ce jour. Et
aucune présence de squales "à ma connaissance" n'a été évoquée ces derniers jours aux
Roches. Pas de quoi faire retomber la psychose qui gagne les usagers de la mer depuis l'attaque
mortelle du mois dernier.

The location of the shark attack is exactly opposite the concrete stairs of the Esplanade des
Roches black spot popular with surfers. "The surfer, as well as seven other athletes were in the
water at that time, about 80m from the edge."
Yet since taking the post of MNS this morning, the red flag was hoisted. "There was actually a
murky water due to some rain in recent days in the blast of the West". 500 meters from the surf
spot is indeed the mouth of the ravine Saint-Gilles who "washed along the bottom," laments the
MNS.
An attack in mid-afternoon surprise
The police and firemen then take over the victim to be headed for a simple examination, Gabriel
Martin in the hospital of St. Paul.
Meanwhile, the MNS on the West Coast, shelter up Boucan canoe, jet-ski out to a sea patrol to
alert surfers unaware of the attack.

For Vincent, an attack in mid-afternoon, 14:50, was "unthinkable" to this day. And no presence of
sharks "to my knowledge" has been raised in recent days at Les Roches. Nothing to fall back to
the psychosis that wins the users of the sea since the deadly attack last month.

La Réunion : Un requin énorme attaque un jeune surfeur
On a frôlé le pire mercredi aux Roches-Noires. Arnaud Dussel, 16 ans, a été chargé par un requin
alors qu’il surfait sur le spot des Roches-Noires, à 50 mètres du rivage. Heureusement,
l’adolescent s’en sort indemne.
C’est la troisième attaque de squale en zone balnéaire depuis le début de l’année. L’inquiétude
grandit au sein de la communauté des surfeurs.
14 h 50 mercredi aux Roches-Noires. Agitation soudaine sur le spot du banc de sable. Les huit
surfeurs qui sont à l’eau regagnent le bord en même temps, à toute vitesse. L’un d’eux vient d’être
attaqué par un requin. Les maîtres nageurs se portent à son secours à bord d’un jet ski.
La victime est indemne, mais choquée. Sa planche a été sectionnée au niveau de l’arrière ( Photo)
. Une cinquantaine de plagistes assistent à la scène. Arnaud Dussel, 16 ans, habitant de SaintGilles-les-Bains, est pris en charge par les pompiers de Saint-Paul. 90 minutes plus tard, le voilà
de retour sur le spot. Remis de ses émotions, l’adolescent témoigne.
« J’étais à l’eau depuis une vingtaine de minutes, au niveau du banc de sable. Un requin est venu
taper sous ma board, il m’a fait tomber. J’ai réagi en le repoussant avec mon pied. Il m’a lâché, je
crois que ça l’a fait fuir. J’ai vu que ma planche était coupée en deux, j’ai appelé à l’aide. J’ai vu
les autres surfeurs sortir de l’eau. Les MNS sont venus me chercher. Tout est allé très vite »,
raconte-il.
Heureusement, il n’a pas été blessé « J’ai juste une égratignure sur le pied, mais c’est à cause de
la planche ». Il précise cependant n’avoir pas aperçu le requin : « Je n’ai vu que son ventre gris,
pas la gueule. Il était énorme ».
Pourtant, le drapeau était rouge, l’eau trouble. Ce qui signifie qu’il y avait des risques : « Même
quand l’eau est claire, il peut y avoir des requins. C’est leur habitat naturel, pas le nôtre. On risque
à tout moment de se faire attaquer », répond le jeune surfeur. Avant d’ajouter qu’il est revenu de
loin : «Oui, j’ai eu énormément de chance. C’est impressionnant à vivre. Mais ça va déjà mieux.
Plus de peur que de mal finalement ».
Et compte-t-il retourner à l’eau prochainement ? « Quand il y a drapeau rouge, peut-être pas. Mais
le temps d’oublier, oui. J’y retournerai d’ici quelques jours. Je suis encore un peu choqué, mais
pas traumatisé. Le surf, c’est ma passion. J’en fais depuis dix ans ».
La plage des Roches Noires est une plage de sable blanc de La Réunion située à proximité
immédiate du centre-ville de la station balnéaire de Saint-Gilles les Bains, sur la côte ouest de
l''île. Longue de moins de deux kilomètres, elle doit son nom à l'amas de rochers sombres qui
émerge de l'eau dans sa moitié nord.
C'est un spot bien connu des adeptes du surf en particulier les plus jeunes qui s'y retrouvent
volontiers après l'école ou le week-end. Ce spot a la particularité de disposer d'un fond marin
relativement sablonneux, toutefois il faut rester vigilant car il y a de nombreux rochers sur les
côtés et surtout une multitude d'oursins.

present at the scene. Arnaud Dussel, 16, resident of Saint-Gilles-les-Bains, is supported by the
firefighters of St. Paul. 90 minutes later, he's back on the spot. Recovered from his emotions, the
youth shows.
"I was in the water for twenty minutes, at the sandbar. Enter a shark came under my board, it
made me fall. I reacted by pushing with my foot. He let go, I think it did leak. I saw that my board
was cut in half, I called for help. I saw the other surfers out of the water. The MNS came for me.
Everything happened very fast," he said.
Fortunately, he was not injured "I just have a scratch on the foot, but because of the board." He
said he had not yet seen the sharks, "I only saw her belly gray, not the mouth. It was huge."
However, the flag was red, cloudy water. This means that there are risks: "Even when the water is
clear, there may be sharks. It is their natural habitat, not ours. We may at any time of attack," says
the young surfer. Adding that he has returned from afar, "Yes, I was very lucky. It's amazing to live.
But it's going better already. More fear than harm eventually. "
And he has returned to the water soon? "When there are red flag, maybe not. But the time to
forget, yes. I will return in a few days. I'm still a little shocked, but not traumatized. Surfing is my
passion. I am ten years."
The beach of Roches Noires is a white sand beach of La Reunion located near the center of the
seaside resort of Saint-Gilles les Bains, on the west coast of 'île. Long, less than two kilometers, it
takes its name from the dark mass of rocks above the water in its northern half.
It is a spot well known to surfers especially younger who gather after school and happy weekend.
This spot has the distinction of having a relatively sandy seabed, however we must remain vigilant
because there are many rocks on the sides and above a multitude of sea urchins.
