13 ENCELADE GROVE
The Encelade grove is a representation of Enceladus, chief of Titans,
who was punished for his pride by the Gods from Mount Olympus.
This composition by Le Nôtre was restored in 1997.
Canals and walks, waterfalls, cascades and cascatellas, pools and
fountains, grottoes and nymphaeums, jets and spouts, water
mirrors and water games…. Water in Versailles is described by a
wealth of words just as its groves abound in secrets. Those words
speak of Le Nôtre’ genius, who wanted water and sculpture to
enliven his gardens. For thirty years, the life of the gardens paralleled the King’s; he walked every day among its treasures, building his
dream. Before even thinking about his palace’s furniture, he
constantly thought about the design of the gardens’ walks and
groves. This is also where he built his legend, with Apollo emerging
from gushing water, Neptune unleashing storms, Encelade defying
Jupiter and Latona imploring Jupiter. Mythology expressed Louis
XIV’s grandeur while serving the design of this incomparable
creation. The King himself signed the perfect visitor’s itinerary for
the gardens, punctuated by water effects. We should forget
Fouquet’s bitter question from prison (according to Paul Morand):
“How did the fountains play at the King’s festival?”. Fouquet, the
fallen minister, could not believe that water would arrive in
Versailles. The King wanted it to be everywhere. And it has remained ever since. Today the Water Fountains Shows are true to his
wishes. When they are set to two centuries of music, they offer
spectators a festival, which echoes past celebrations.
On some summer evenings, lights, lasers and fireworks render the
gardens even more extraordinary. True to the intention of this Great
King- 2015 is the tercentenary of his death- and of the artists who
worked for him, Château de Versailles Spectacles, a subsidiary of
Château de Versailles Public Establishment, organizes exceptional
garden events. Our aim is that restorations, like the just finished
Latona Parterre and Fountain, or reinterpretations, like the contemporary garden redesigned by Louis Benech and adorned with Jean
Michel Othoniel’s sculpture fountains in the Water Theatre Grove,
give new life to the groves fallen into disrepair with time, with new
fountains and new music. So that the magic lives through time!

19 GROVE OF APOLLO’S BATHS
In 1776, the pre-romantic grove landscaped by the painter Hubert
Robert was laid out in the fashionable style of the “folly” gardens, with
its surprising rock, housing the three magnificent groups of marble
sculptures of Apollo and the Nymphs (recovered from the Thetis
Grotto, built by Louis XIV), entrusted by Marsy, Guérin, Girardon et
Regnaudin.

20 WATER THEATER GROVE New opening in 2015
After two years' work the Water Theatre Grove, redesigned by Louis
Benech and enhanced with fountain-sculptures by Jean-Michel
Othoniel opens.
CHÂTEAU DE VERSAILLES
21 THREE FOUNTAINS GROVE
If it is quite probable that Louis XIV himself laid out this grove, it is
certainly his faithful gardener Le Nôtre who supervised its execution
from 1677 to 1679. Thus, the simple decor composed of lawn, marble,
rockeries and shells, and characterized by a complete absence of statues,
gave the Three Fountains Grove a very pure and simple atmosphere.

THE MUSICAL FOUNTAINS SHOW IN FIGURES
Alpha invites you to continue your rambles with the CD of the
music played in the gardens of the Palace of Versailles through a
selection of the greatest works by the best contemporary players.
The masterpieces of the French baroque repertoire are performed
here and invite you to relive in music the fabulous history of the
Palace, its gardens and fountains, from its origins in the reign of
Louis XIII until the mid-18th century. This theatrical place par
excellence is the setting for all the features of the Human Comedy
of the courtesans, through the dreamlike interpretation of the Poème
Harmonique, or seated in the shade of a young elm tree (à L’Ombre
d’un Ormeau) with the Musiciens de Saint-Julien. Lully’s work is
highlighted with extracts from his greatest operas and his ComedyBallet (the celebrated “Turkish” Ceremony, performed by the
ensemble Café Zimmermann and the Capriccio Stravagante
Orchestra which open with majesty the gates of the Enchanted Isle.
Chaconnes and passacaglias (which Louis XIV loved) invite you to
dance…Lastly, the splendours of 18th century opera come to life with
the ensemble Pygmalion in an original programme on the CD
(extracts from Dardanus) recorded in the majestic setting of the Royal
Opera of the Palace of Versailles. With the ensemble Ausonia, the
Mortals serve as models for the Gods with two outstanding pieces from
the Rameau repertoire: Zoroastre and Zaïs.

30 LATONA FOUNTAIN Reopening in 2015 after restauration
It illustrates the legend of Diana and Apollo’s mother protecting her
children from the insults of the peasants of Lycia, and asking
vengeance to Jupiter, resulting in their changing into frogs. Surrounded
by the Lizard Fountain, the Latona Fountain, constructed under Louis
XIII, was modified by J.H. Mansart between 1687 and 1689.
32 FOUNTAIN OF APOLLO'S CHARIOT
Apollo’s chariot was dug … out under the reign of Louis XIV,
who had the magnificent group representing « Apollo on his
Chariot » installed ; the latter created by Tuby from drawing by
Le Brun. 3 majestic fountains rise from this pool, the central
jet reaching a height of 20 meters.
