Les espoirs du Canada
At the 2004 Olympics in Athens, Canada placed 19th in the medal
standings with 12. The goal this summer is reach the top 16. Here are
some of the athletes who could help Canada get there.

Alexandre Despatie

Now 23, Despatie has been winning medals since he
competed in the Commonwealth Games as a 13-yearold. He won silver in the three-metre springboard
event in Athens and added silver in the three-metre
springboard and three-metre springboard synchronized
events at the 2007 world championships. Despite a
recent foot injury, he should threaten the dominant
Chinese in three-metre and synchronized (with partner
Arturo Miranda).

récolte des médailles depuis son apparition aux Jeux
du Commonwealth, alors qu’il n’avait que 13 ans. À
Athènes, il a remporté l’argent au tremplin de trois
mètres. Puis, c’était l’argent à la même épreuve et au
plongeon synchronisé sur tremplin de trois mètres, lors
des Championnats du monde de 2007. Malgré une
récente fracture du pied, il devrait menacer les Chinois,

Chao, 32, won the gold in women’s 10-metre air
pistol at the 2007 Pan American Games in Rio de
Janeiro. Raised in Wuhan, China, Chao moved to
Canada when she was young and only started shooting six years ago.
Hunyh came close to the podium at the 2007 world
championships in Baku, Azerbaijan last September, losing the 48-kilogram bronze medal match to Venezuela’s
Mayelis Caripa-Castillo. Hunyh won gold at the 2007
Pan American Games.
Avianna Chao, 32 ans, a remporté la catégorie pistolet
à air comprimé (10 mètres) aux Jeux panaméricains de
2007, à Rio de Janeiro. Élevée à Wuhan, en Chine, elle
était encore une enfant à son arrivée au Canada. Elle
s’exerce au tir depuis six ans seulement.
En septembre dernier, Carol Huynh a raté de peu le
podium des championnats du monde 2007 de Baku,
en Azerbaïdjan. La médaille de bronze des 48 kilos lui a
échappé dans un match contre la Vénézuélienne Mayelis
Caripa Castillo. Par contre, elle a remporté l’or aux Jeux
panaméricains.

Only 18, Hopfner-Hibbs has broken into the top
ranks of women’s gymnastics the last two years, winning four medals at the 2006 Commonwealth Games
and then earning bronze on beam at the 2007 worlds.
She’s the first Canadian woman to win a medal at the
world championships.
Whitfield, 32, won gold in 2000 in Sydney. But after
an 11th-place finish in 2004, he changed coaches and
started training harder and smarter. Last season a new
and improved Whitfield won three World Cup races
and finished second in the International Triathlon
Union standings.
Elyse Hopfner-Hibbs n’a que 18 ans, mais, depuis
deux ans, elle se taille une place au sein de l’élite de la
gymnastique féminine. Elle a remporté quatre médailles
aux Jeux du Commonwealth de 2006, puis le bronze sur
la poutre aux Championnats du monde de 2007. Elle est
la première Canadienne à avoir remporté une médaille
dans un championnat du monde.
Simon Whitfield, 32 ans, a décroché l’or à Sydney, en
2000. Après une 11e place en 2004, il a changé d’entraîneur et de méthode d’entraînement. La saison dernière,
le Whitfield version améliorée a gagné trois épreuves de

He was third in the 400 metres
at the 2005 world championships and sixth in 2007. He was
second at the Pan Ams, partly because of a controversial start:
Christopher thought there was a false start, stopped, then
started again. In March he won the 400 at the world indoor
championships in Spain.
Cet Edmontonien qui a grandi à Chilliwack (C.-B.) est probablement le meilleur espoir canadien en athlétisme. Il s’est classé

silver medals on the World Cup circuit and finished
second overall.

Based near Victoria, Canada’s men’s eight should be
one of the favourites when the rowers hit the water in
Beijing. The team won the 2007 world championships
in Munich, handily beating second-place Germany and
third-place Great Britain.
Favoured to win gold in the 100-metre hurdles four
years ago in Athens, Felicien hit the first gate and
crashed. Now she’s back for another try. A secondplace finish at the 2007 worlds suggests she’s capable
of reaching the Beijing podium.
