Midtown NYC, two blocks west of Times Square, i.e. within the throbbing heart of New York and the Broadway theatres, though without the noise... The British hotel concept, up until now established in the airport areas of London (Heathrow and Gatwick) and Amsterdam (Schiphol), now boasts its first urban opus, inaugurated in New York on 15 June 2011. Designed by the famous Rockwell Group and the Softroom London studio (known for the Virgin Atlantic clubhouse in Heathrow, the Business classes of Boeing and Airbus Virgin Atlantic, as well as the Wahaca restaurants in Covent Garden and San Francisco), YOTEL is neither another address in Big Apple, nor a gadget hotel, rather the reification of new thought and syntax for a holiday or a business trip, inspired from the Japanese capsule hotels, with extra luxury to the bargain. artravel 141 HOTEL NeW YOrK 142 artravel C’est Simon Woodroffe, le fondateur des restaurants de sushis YO!, qui en parle le mieux : « J’ai eu la chance d’être surclassé en Première sur British Airways. Simon Woodroffe, the founder of the YO! sushi restaurants, is the best person to explain: “I was lucky enough to be upgraded to First class on British Airways. I fell asleep with the conundrum of how to create a flexible and convenient hotel experience at an affordable price. The YOTEL brand is launching its first city centre hotel; I expect YOTEL to be in the world’s top ten hotel brands within the next ten years. YOTEL entirely fulfils the Holy Grail of retailing, a top-of-therange product at a price better than expected.” And it’s true, the concept is vowed to achieve exponential growth over the next few years. Gerard Greene, CEO of YOTEL, points out that it is indeed a “solution to expensive and boring hotels… I wanted YOTEL to use an innovative, radical design to create a mixture of luxury, fun, comfort and excitement at an affordable price, by turning the hotel industry upside down.” Indeed, the design is sensational, both in its engaging lines and transparent volumes. As soon as you step inside, everything is different: with its many computers, the reception is not unlike an airport check-in desk - perhaps more stylish - 24 hours a day, 7 days a week; its luggage lockers (Yobot) are served by the first robot as assistant - a fun and efficient articulated arm, in the fashion of a sci-fi film. Here again, a firsttimer! The lounges, bars and restaurants multiply the various atmospheres, with natural, almost supernatural, lighting, but always in a cool and trendy fashion. At the Dohyo (traditional stage for sumo wrestlers) with its long white Japanese-style tables, you may taste the dishes concocted by Richard Sandoval, Head Chef (17 restaurants in the US), just as you may visit the Green Lounge that overlooks a terrace, the Club Lounge & Bar or the Club Lounge Cabins, which may also be individually rented out: a cabin for those business encounters or for a private evening with friends. Cabin atmosphere also for the 18 bedrooms, with the “First” category equipped with a private terrace and Jacuzzi, and the 3 VIP suites with a rotating round bed and the latest hightech equipment found only in your dreams! High up from its fabulous terrace (the largest in the city with its private “cabanas”), providing magical views of the Manhattan skyline, the YOTEL greets us with a fantastic masterful “Yo”. artravel 143
