Finally, a plan for dramatically increasing financial independence will be designed by 2017. ...that they all may be one! 1 Ing. Constantin Thénor Prof. Rodelin Charles Dr. Nicole Magloire YMCA d’Haïti Peace medal Recipients 2010, 2011 and 2012 Foreword This report is an invitation to revisit YMCA d'Haiti's actions and progress over the last three years. Programs, projects and activities offered to youth and adults are narrated, counted and described to facilitate a better understanding of the future of this community service organization and its works and penetration in the communities. Since we believe that the lessons from our past must help shape a better future, the last three years of progress are recounted in figures, words, graphics, pictures and testimonies for a good analysis. This is done on the very moment that YMCA d'Haiti is achieving attainment most of the objectives outlined in its strategic development plan 2009-2014 and is getting ready to conceive the next plan for (2014-2017). The time is right as it provides tremendous satisfaction and pleasure, as we look back in the rearview mirror at the great accomplishments of 2010, 2011 and 2012 So many good programs, projects and activities were offered to the members and in the communities! These nice smiles show hope and the testimonies are poignant! This exercise also helps evaluate YMCA d'Haiti capacity in terms of strength and weakness, as well as program relevance and cost efficiency. The opportunity to measure the workload ahead was also seized and one realized that as successful and extremely encouraging is the past, as determined YMCA d'Haiti is to remain connected to the communities and committed to the mission of helping the youth with character building programs that promote harmonious development within the community. While YMCA d'Haiti and its partners are building trust and continuing the strengthening process of the organization, our Youth are regaining confidence in themselves, making progress in all fronts while embracing YMCA core values which are: Respect, Honesty, and Caring Responsibility. ...that they all may be one! 2 Annual report YMCA d’Haïti 2012 «The development of leadership is directly associated to strategies for youth participation and the Construction of social impact … the [young leader] is considered as an animator of group processes oriented to autonomy, full development, and the exercise of responsible citizenship. » Latin American & Caribbean Alliance of YMCAs (paper on Youth leadership) Thomas Wells with kids at Laboule YMCA Message from the President Dear Partners and Friends, The pleasure of submitting to you a 2012 annual report full of accomplishments is great! In fact, YMCA d'Haiti's progress was great in many areas in 2012. On behalf of the National Board that I have the honor to chair and on behalf of all the volunteers, staff and all the youth and adults we served, I thank each and every one of our friends and partners for their trust and support. This annual report shows you how YMCA d'Haiti works, what kind of programs and activities were offered and how much was spent in 2012. Overall this report shows how we move closer to the needy ones in our community and remain useful The perseverance with which our YMCA pursues the objectives as defined in the Strategic Development Plan (2012-2014) warrants a bright future. We made great progress in Governance and our staff members are in continuous training mode in order to organize an even better future. While the efforts in local fund raising and revenues are encouraging, the road towards self-sufficiency is difficult. This year 12% of the operational budget was provided locally compared to 6% in 2011, thanks to the fact that for the first time in 12 years, all members of the National Board have contributed. As I hope, all of my colleagues made similar signed pledges for 2013. The YMCAs of Québec and CIDA, Y-US-Coalition (7 YMCAs), Y-US-World Service and Germany YMCA continue to give us financial and technical assistance to strengthen our YMCA, we have developed our network with local partnerships with Partners of the Americas, Athletic of Haiti, Haitian Federation of Table Tennis and the Ministry of Youth, Sports and Civic Action help to implement programs and activities on the ground. Dear friends and partners, this annual report is primarily to reassure you that the financial and technical assistance that you invest in YMCA d'Haïti is efficiently used and fairly distributed in accordance with the cardinal virtues of our YMCA, that as you know is part of a worldwide organization recognized for his selfless contribution to the neediest and for its probity. I remain yours, should you want to discuss our report any further and thank you again for the consideration and your trust, Roges Lamothe, President ...that they all may be one! 3 The National Board of YMCA d’Haiti General Secretary Report Fortunately, in 2010 YMCA d'Haiti chooses to invest in strengthening its structure rather than in addressing the emergencies. Indeed, three successive periods of progress in achieving the objectives set in our strategic development plan (2011-2014), justifies this pride and faith in the future. In 2010, the World Alliance of YMCAs (WAY), the Association of Latin American and Caribbean YMCA (LACA) and our traditional partners in Quebec and USA did support our development plan and helped put together a Support Group (HPRG), fund it up to $ 450,000.in order to start the strengthening organizational process. YMCA d'Haiti actually received $ 529.157. In 2011, comforted by the results, some partners have continued to help our YMCA. The Y-US Coalition was conceived with five YMCAs of the USA. Quebec YMCA and CIDA and Germany YMCA supported the budget of $ 350,000 for the year. At the end of the fiscal period $ 421.842 were counted. In 2012, the Y-US-Coalition was strengthened (7 YMCAs), YMCA of Germany still has responded positively and the cooperation with Québec YMCA and CIDA helped to close a budget of $ 350,000, revised downward to finish the year with $ 336.480. Meanwhile other local and international partners have joined the group. This allowed the implementation of programs and activities on the ground and the capacity building of the YMCA. In 2013 we eyeglass a budget of $ 350,000, but agreed to a $ 285,000-budget out of respect to the orthodoxy of balanced budget required by the partners. With progress made in Governance and Program Management, YMCA d'Haiti is better structured and could proudly and generously offer itself as a stewardship model of success for other same size YMCAs in the world. Some great friends and partners who see international cooperation at the YMCA as a means to contribute to the sustainable development have made extraordinary efforts in this endeavor. And, we take an immense pleasure to show our gratitude to Paula Gavin, Thomas Wells, Jack Lund, Antonio Merino and Tom Valentine, for their gifts and grace. In 2010, 2011 and 2012, YMCA d'Haiti was able to successfully offer to the youth exceptional and meaningful programs and activities designed to strengthen their spirit, mind and body, while continue growing as an organization. Thank you greatly. The following pages show evidently the accomplishments in fiscal year 2012, but in comparison with 2011 and 2010, so one could grasp the growth on a three-year scale. Gwénaël Apollon General Secretary ...that they all may be one! 4 Annual report YMCA d’Haïti 2012 «The challenge is to make the YMCA an asset to our communities and not an asset for only a small amount of members.» YMCA of the USA (Paper on global philanthropy) YMCA Community Center Camp-Perrin YMCA impact on YOUTH and Teens YMCA does not spend money, we serve our members and we are useful to the community. There is a cost for that: 66 needy youth went to school this year free of charge because of our POTEKOLE scholarship program $30,913 were spent for that. It is about $468/student/year. 500 youth benefited from YMCA after school program the cost was $35,000 or $70/member. 395 youth went to camps (Day-camps, football and volleyball camps). Organizing these camps cost $21,000, or $53/camper. 20 young Ambassadors, 10 teens campers and 3 young leaders, with 4 adults left Haïti for New York and Montréal. The money spent in Haiti was equivalent to $24,700 or $668/ participant. ...that they all may be one! 5 Summer Camp 2012 at the Ministry of Youth, Sports and Civic Action Progression: Revenues / Expenses 600,000 500,000 400,000 300,000 200,000 100,000 0 2012 2011 2010 Budget Revenues Expenses 350,000 350,000 450,000 336,480 421,842 529,157 341,356 444,842 310,685 Average Expense / Month 28,446 37,070 25,890 Average Revenue / Month 28,040 35,153 44,096 Local Revenues 44,117 13,313 0 All figures are in US $ ...that they all may be one! 6 Annual report YMCA d’Haïti 2012 «...Becoming known for social impact is essential we need to be known for what we do and the value We bring to our communities. Orphan Mother and F a t h e r, I h a v e b e e n accepted in the YMCA Scholarship POTEKOLE program in 2010, when I was in 3rd AF. Thanks to the support of this program, I am now in 5th AF. So far, YMCA d'Haiti has paid regularly my school fees, given me all the books and school supplies I am in need of and paid for my uniforms to go to school. I am completely grateful to the YMCA, and I translate this recognition by studying diligently to continue to have averaged about 8 and 10. I say thank you to the YMCA that allows me to go to school and accompanies me on the path that will allow me to achieve my dream to become a doctor one day. Without the help of the POTEKOLE program, I'd probably among those who did not get to go to school. So, my wish is to see more children like me have the opportunity to attend school through program like POTEKOLE in the YMCA. Bernadine Jeune 4th AF, School Artimoun ...that they all may be one! I a m D r. S a n t i a Frederic and I was one of the beneficiaries of the PoteKole program in YMCA d'Haiti. Indeed, this scholarship allowed me to study in Medical Sciences at Notre-Dame University in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, which I owe the honor of having the title of Physician today. Given that Haiti is composed mainly of youth, many people who would like to study cannot because of their dire economic circumstances. These young people have a great will to succeed but in most cases this is hardly insufficient to reach personal and even professional success. The YMCA d'Haiti through this program allowed me to be one of the few exceptions to this fact and for that I will be forever grateful. This program has had a major positive impact in my life, that's why I would encourage those responsible for this activity to continue to work in this direction to improve the lives of other youth like me. Guerline, one the Y's employees brought Naissa to the Y for the first time. Now 10 years old, she continues to come everyday to the YMCA d' Haiti's establishment in Port-au-Prince. “The YMCA d' Haiti is my second family” Naissa told us when we asked her how the YMCA had helped her throughout the years. “They pay my school tuitions and taught me how to live like brother and sister. They taught me Respect and Responsibility.” Naissa wants to become a dancer and a veterinary. She is currently enrolled in a dance course but Naissa wants to be able to go to dance at the Y. At the Y, she would also like to see an animal shelter, a pool, more books and music and piano classes. “The fact that the YMCA pays my school tuitions makes more of a great impact on me Naissa said when we asked her what touched her the most. Later on in life, Naissa would like to work with the YMCA d'Haiti. “I want to give dance lessons and I want to take care of the library.” When we asked Naissa to summarize the YMCA d'Haiti into one word, she carefully answered: HELP. ...that they all may be one! My name is Christina Saint-Eloi. I am 18 years old. I live in Widmaër Street. I have been attending YMCA d'Haïti many years ago. I have been benefiting from the s c h o l a r s h i p programPOTEKOLE since 2011, I was in 8e AF. By the continuing support of the program, I am now in 3e secondary. Through the POTEKOLE program, YMCA d'Haïti is financially supporting regularly all my schools tuitions, including my schools materials. For all that reason, I will be forever grateful to YMCA d'Haïti. I thank the YMCA d'Haiti, who is still conducting me on the educational way that will allow me to achieve my dream to become an honest and qualified Physician ready to give back to the community. I would encourage this program Chief to keep working on the same direction in order to improve the life of young people in the community. 11 2012 Youth International Summit at Kanawana camp, Québec Attachment I POTEKOLE Ricardo Dieujuste Ecole St Alphonse de Liguori 3ème Secondaire Christina St Eloi College Michel de Ronsard 3ème Secondaire Guillometre Ruth Bernadine College Les Normaliens Réunis 8ème A.
