Abstract: This study examined the grammatical errors made by advanced Malaysian students in learning French as a foreign language with regards to writing composition. The study utilized quantitative and qualitative methods of data collection. The study took place in Universiti Putra Malaysia. A total of 18 subjects participated in the study after 432 hours of learning French. The task consisted of writing a dialogue of 250 words on festivals in Malaysia. Data analysis was done by applying the definition of surface structure taxonomy of errors by Dulay, Burt & Krashen (1982). The results showed that misformation errors were the most frequent errors produced by the learners (51.77%), followed by omission errors (31.57%), with addition of elements or misordering being less frequent. Future research may focus on the sub-categories of the errors and the factors contributed to the formation of errors, both in written and spoken French. Key words: grammatical errors, written composition, French, advanced learners. INTRODUCTION In the process of acquiring a foreign language, learners produce forms which a native speaker of the target language would not produce. Hence, the understanding of the foreign language errors holds an utmost importance for the teachers and the curriculum designers in order to optimize the language acquisition by the learners. Furthermore, by analysing the errors produced by the learners, teachers would be able to gauge at what point the lesson was understood, thus, errors can be used as a measurement tool of the learner’s achievement. The study of errors has been a part of various researches in the domain of language learning for over thirty years. Brown (2000, p. 217) defined errors as “a noticeable deviation from the adult grammar of a native speaker, which reflects the interlanguage competence of the learner.” This supported the statement by James (1998) and Ellis (1997) who indicated that errors are regarded as divergence which arises as a result of second language learning. These deviations succeeding from the deficiency of the language ruleswere defined as competences(Chomsky, 1965). Kitao & Kitao (2000) suggested that error analysis in language use will be able to assist the instructors to foresee the types of errors, which is useful for developing the curriculum and selecting teaching methods. Moreover, the result of such analysis can be used as an indicator of the learners’ achievement. It can also be used for researching language acquisition and learners’ strategy in language learning. As indicated by Dulay, Burt & Krashen (1982), the result of error analysis can be used as an indicator of learning achievement and guidance for teaching. The outcome of the error analysis can assist the learners and the teachers as by identifying and understanding specific errors allows the learners to correct and avoid making them (Hazlina Abdul Halimet al., 2011a) Errors, according to Dulay (1982, p.138), are flawed side of learners’ speech or writing. On the other hand, the flaws are something learners cannot do in the process of acquiring the target language. A learner will not learn the language without first systematically committing errors.Parallel to developments in the field of error analysis, various taxonomies have been proposed by the linguists. Richards (1971, p.3), for example, suggested a three-way categorization of errors, namely interference, intralingual and developmental errors. Richards (1971) elaborated that interferences are those originated from the influence of learners’ mother tongue which clearly differ from the areas of the target language. The intralingual errors on the other hand are those originating within the structure of the language itself. The last categorization, which is the developmental errors replicate the strategies by which the learner acquires the language. Studies on linguistic accuracy in written texts have lingered on the sources of the errors, among which is the interference of the first language (L1). Bennui (2008), for instance, found L1 interference at the level of words, sentences and discourse in the paragraph writing among 28 Thai students taking English as a minor. The lexical interference was due to literal translation of Thai words into English, whereas the disturbance at the sentence level involved structural borrowing from Thai language such as word order, subject-verb agreement and noun Corresponding Author: Hazlina Abdul Halim, Department of Foreign Languages, Universiti Putra Malaysia, 43400 UPM Serdang, Selangor, Malaysia. (2011a) findings on French written paragraph by Malaysian students, which brought the same conclusion. Similarly to Bennui’s (2008) findings, Rosli Talif & Malachi Edwin’s (1989) studied on grammatical errors made by Form Four Malaysian students. Their study found that students from rural schools with lower English proficiency found verb forms more difficult than other grammar items. Out of 64 errors identified in the compositions of the rural students, it was found that 56.25% were verb form errors. In contrast, for the urban students, only 36.96% of 46 errors were verb form errors, indicating that while they were able to learn correct use of tenses, they still had difficulties with other grammar items, particularly with subject-verb agreement. Most of the error taxonomies were based on the linguistic item affected by an error. These taxonomies categorize errors according to the particular linguistic constituent the error affects (Dulay, Burt & Krashen, 1989). Two of the major linguistics taxonomies to categorise the errors are surface strategy taxonomy and comparative taxonomy. This study was based on the former taxonomy. The set of classifications known as the surface structure taxonomy was proposed by Dulay, Burt & Krashen (1982), which they described as being based on “the way surface structures are altered” (1982, p.150), in which the learners amend target forms in four ways, namely omitting, adding, misforming and misordering. The first classification of surface structure taxonomy, omission means that an item which must be present in a well-formed utterance is left out. There is evidence that grammatical morphemes are absent more often than content morphemes which carry the meaning (Dulay, Burt & Krashen, 1982, p.154-155). Learners in the early stages have the tendency to leave out function words rather than content words. More advanced learners, nonetheless, tend to be aware of their ignorance of content words and rather than omit one, thus alternatively, they opt for compensatory strategies to convey their ideas (Kasper & Kellerman, 1997). The second classification is the manifestation of addition errors, on the other hand, resulted from “all-too-faithful use of certain rules” (Dulay, Burt & Krashen, 1982, p.156), which they further detailed into two subtypes: regulation and double marking. Regularization involves overlooking exceptions and applying rules to domains unnecessarily, while double marking, is defined as ‘failure to delete certain items which are required in some linguistic constructions but not in others’. The third classification, which is misformationerrors, refers to “the use of the wrong form of the morpheme or structure” (Dulay, Burt & Krashen, 1982, p.158). This type of errors, as per the addition errors, is further divided into three subtypes, which are regulations, archi-forms and alternations. Hence, regularization errors occur when an irregular marker is replaced by a regular one, whereas the archi-forms refer to the use of single member of a class of forms instead of using all the members. The third subtype, which is alternating forms are represented by “free alternation of various members of a class with each other” used by the same learner (Dulay, Burt & Krashen,1982, p. 157). The last classification of the surface structure taxonomy is the misordering errors, which occur when the learners select the right forms to use in the right context; nevertheless they arrange them in the wrong order. These errors can be in form of adverbials, interrogatives and adjectives, yielding errors. This taxonomy of surface structure will be the base of this research. According to Darus & Ching (2009), among writing, reading, speaking and listening, writing is the most complex aspect but it is a crucial skill for students to learn. Students with the ability and competency in writing will be able to express themselves effectively. Furthermore, they will have more privilege in their job application as compared to others, particularly in sectors and companies that are involved at international level. The French language is considered a complicated language to learn for Malaysians as the language is linguistically different from most of the languages spoken in Malaysia, namely Malay, English, Chinese and Tamil (Hazlina Abdul Halim et al., 2009b). These differences present the complications to the Malaysian students learning French as a foreign language, both in the writing and speaking skills. The origin to this problem is basically their inclination to refer back to either their mother tongue or their second languages when learning process, hence creating disturbances in the acquisition of the target language (Hazlina Abdul Halimet al., 2009b). Furthermore, the incomprehension of the French grammatical rules has led the learners to produce errors in French (Hazlina Abdul Halim et al., 2011a). With the importance of the writing skills and the tendency of the advanced French learners to produce errors in French in mind, the researcher sought in this research to find and analyse the errors made by these students in their written production. The objective of this study was to identify the errors made by Malaysian advanced learners of French with regards to the writing composition. The study will also classify and analyse the errors according to surface structure error taxonomy by Dulay, Burt & Krashen (1982). MATERIALS AND METHODS This study utilised both the quantitative and qualitative methods of data analysis. The subjects consisted of the 3rd year French Bachelor students at Universiti Putra Malaysia. A total of 20 subjects participated in this study after their 432 hours of French. The study will also take into account the languages used in the formal 313 Aust. J. Basic & Appl. Sci., 6(13): 312-326, 2012 setting by the learners, namely Malay and English. The instrument used in this study was the completion of a dialogue of 200-250 words by the subjects. The dialogue consisted of writing about festival celebrations in Malaysia. The subjects were asked to pay attention to the coherence and the cohesion, as well as the grammar, vocabulary and the organisation of their composition. These dialogues were then analyzed and the errors committed were then classified into the four categories of the Surface Structure Taxonomy by Dulay, Burt & Krashen (1982).This study focussed only on grammatical errors. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION On the whole, around 500 sentences were analyzed (a rough estimation on a minimum sentences (25 sentences) multiplied by the number of respondents, i.e. 20). Listed in Fig. 1 are the results of the errors found in students’ writing task. A total of 537 grammatical errors were found in the composition, most of them were in fact recurring errors. An examination of the types of errors based on surface structure descriptions (Dulay, Burt & Krashen, 1982) shows that the most frequent error is misinformation (51.77%), followed by omission (35.57%). Nonetheless, addition and misordering errors contributed only 12.66% to the total errors. Fig. 1: The overall results of errors by advanced learners of French in their written composition. Misformation Errors: Misformation errors were found to be most dominant in this study (n = 278). Listed in Fig. 2 are the results of the different types of misformation errors found in students’ writing task.Among the most frequent misformation errorswere the errors involving the use of verbs (30.11%), articles (10.39%), nouns (19%)and orthograph (8.23%). The high frequency of misinformation errors gave an indication that the learners were conscious of the necessity to use a particular grammatical feature in certain parts of the sentence, nevertheless made an incorrect choice. Fig. 2: Types of misformation errors by advanced learners of French in their written composition. 1. Misformation Errors on French Verbs: Misformation errors on French verbs involved using wrong verb (n=49), conjugation errors (n=19), borrowings from English (n=24), generalization of verb-noun (n=4) and wrong use of plural form (n=1). Table 1 showed a few examples of the misformation errors on verbs made by the learners. Misformation errors on the incorrect verbs occurred when the learners used the reflective words, future tense and the faux amis in French. From the study, it was found that these errors were due to the influence of the students’ second language (English). This can be seen through the utilization of the regular verbs (instead of the 314 Aust. J. Basic & Appl. Sci., 6(13): 312-326, 2012 reflective verbs) which were in fact translated fromEnglish. Some of the verbs used were the verb habiller instead of s’habiller and sentir instead of se sentir. The learners also employed literal translation from English for certain lexical items in their written production, although failed miserably. This can be seen through the use of the faux-amicélébrerand visiter. The two verbs, though have the correct meaning in French literally, were not suitable to be used in the context mentioned in the sentences by the learners. Visiter in French, for example is used for building, not for people. The correct verb should be rendre visite (to pay a visit). The use of the faux amis in fact was an intralingual error illustrating “when the required literal translation is unknown and the learner borrows a mother tongue (L1) substitute, the consequence is an L1 transfer error” (James, 1998, p. 175). Hazlina Abdul Halimet al. (2011a) indicated that faux-amis were used because the learners did not realize that though the spelling is similar in English and in French, it does not have the same connotation in the two languages. Conjugationerrors and the plural forms on the other hand were the alternating forms which is called the overgeneralization, which according to Richards (1971) is associated with redundancy reduction. It occur the instance where the learner creates a deviant structure on the basis of his experience of other structures in the target language. The errors of borrowing and the generalization verb-noun were the two other types of verb misformation errors. These two errors served a momentary need caused by either laziness, fatigue or stress, although according to Niemiec (2010), they may also be chosen consciously, because the learners think them more appropriate or more to the point in a particular situation. Niemiec (2010) further indicated that borrowing is a linguistic strategy employed by both bilingual and monolingual speakers, usually to fill in lexical gaps. Lexical need is particularly present in an immigrant situation where the person finds much difficulty in describing the new world using his/her mother tongue. The latter was what the researcher believed to be the reason for the errors produced by the learners. Table 1: Examples of misformation errors on verbs. Types of verb errors Sentences Using wrong verb Je toujours habile le baju kurung pendant visité mes amis pendant Hari Raya. Misformation Errors on French Nouns: Misformation errors on French nouns concerned using wrong noun (n=19), code switching from English and Malay (n=33) and wrong use of noun (n=2). Listed in Table 2are a few examples of the misformation errors on noun made by the learners. Parallel to the misformation errors of using the wrong verb, the errors of using the incorrect noun were equally due to the influence of the learners’ second language, and the approximation strategy employed by the learner when faced with the lapse in memorizing the correct French vocabulary (e.g. poulette to say poulet). The influence of the English was traced in the nouns such as festivals and relativeswhich are also the faux ami due to intralingual errors committed by the learners. The errors of using wrong verb were also the result of the learners’ deficiency in French vocabulary which prompted the learners to literally translate the nouns from English to French (i.e. le petit poisson to say les anchoix). The wrong use of noun was equally a result of the approximation on the phonemic (i.e. gateau to say cadeau) and extensive elaboration of the noun (i.e. la culture chinoise instead of les Chinois). The errors of noun borrowing from English and Malay, as per the errors verb borrowings were also due the lapse in finding the appropriate words in the target language. In this study, some of the nouns the learners committed borrowing errors were specific nouns which were not commonly used or learnt in their French syllabus. This includes nouns likele lait de coco (coconut milk) and les anchois (anchovies). 315 Aust. J. Basic & Appl. Sci., 6(13): 312-326, 2012 Table 2: Examples of misformation errors on nouns. 3. Other Misformation Errors: The researcher also found a number of other types of misformation errors. Errors of prepositions, articles, the expression of quantity and interrogative forms, were the result of “the incomplete knowledge” (Richards, 1992) and the ignorance of rules restrictions” and an “incomplete application of the rules” as explained by Dulay, Burt & Krashen (1982, p. 156). For example: 1. This could be due to L1 interference as there is no grammatical gender marker in Malay and English writings. Hence, Malaysian learners of advanced French encountered new grammatical rules in writing in French which generate another problem for the students. Nevertheless, these errors may also be a result of students’ overgeneralization of the restricted rules since in Malay or English the presence of grammatical gender in the prepositions and articles are nonexistent. Omission Errors: Omission errors were the second most dominant in this study (n = 191). The detailed results of the omission errors are listed in Fig. 3 below. Among the omission errors the most frequent to be found were the omission of French articles (70.68 %), prepositions (6.81%), and plural forms (5.76%). Among the omission of French articles, the most frequent errors came from the omission of definite articles (80.74%), and 10.37% were the omission of partitive articles (n=14). The significant number of omission errors on the articles proved that Malaysian students, though were learning French at the advanced level, as opposed to Dulay, Burt & Krashen’s findings, had the tendency to leave out function words rather than content words. In the excerpts from the written composition, <> is used for missing elements in the composition.Table 3 shows a few samples of the most dominant omission errors in French. 316 Aust. J. Basic & Appl. Sci., 6(13): 312-326, 2012 Fig. 3: Types of omission errors by advanced learners of French in theirwritten composition. Table 3: Examples of most dominant omission errors. Types of omission errors Sentences Omission of articles J’aime beaucoup <> rendang Le costume traditionnel pour <> Hari Raya est <> Baju Kurung. The omission errors could be due to L1 interference as there is no grammatical gender marker in Malay and English writings. For example: Sentence in French: Sentence in Malay: Sentence in English: Le costume traditionnel pour <> Hari Raya est <> Baju Kurung. Pakaian tradisional untuk * Hari Raya adalah * Baju Kurung. The traditional costume for * Hari Raya is * Baju Kurung. (* indicate the place for the article in French) As for the prepositions, the omission is due to literal translation strategy by the learners either from English or Malay. For example: Sentence in French: Sentence in Malay: Sentence in English: Je habiller <> normal vetement pour Noël Saya pakai * baju biasa untuk Hari Natal. I wear *normal clothes for Christmas. (* indicate the place for the preposition in French) This result is similar to Lightfoot’s (1998) study of on the Japanese second language learners’ usage of the English article system, where it was discovered that omission errors were likely to have been caused by direct interference from the article-less Japanese language. Addition Errors: In this research, the addition errors (n=48) involved the ‘failure to delete certain items which are required in some linguistic constructions but not in others’. The most dominant addition errors involved verbs (n=16) and expressions in French (n=9). Listed in Fig. 4 are the results of the addition errors found in students’ writing task. For addition errors involving the verbs, the additions were made mainly by incorporating the auxiliary verbs être and avoir. This can be seen in the examples below: 317 Aust. J. Basic & Appl. Sci., 6(13): 312-326, 2012 Incorporation of the Verb Avoir: 1. Moi, nous avons achete en restaurant 2. J’ai mange jej’ai rendre visite à mes des amis, je jouj’ai joue (The mark – as in jeindicates the correction done by the learners) In the examples above, the auxilary avoir was used in addition to the verbs due to the influence of translation of the sentences from English by the respondents. The verb avoir utilised in both examples was as a substitute for the present perfect tense in English. In the first example, the respondent tried to express “we have bought”, and in the second sentence, the phrases meant were “I have eaten”, “ I have paid a visite” and “ I have played”. In English, the present perfect is formed using the present tense of “to have + the past participle of the action verb to express an action that started in the past that may or may not ended in the present. In both sentences built by the respondents, the actions were past actions, therefore the correct tense to be used both in French and English was the preterit or the passé composé in French. Hence the sentences should be: 1. 2. Moi, nous avons acheté en restaurant J’aimangé , j’airendu visite à des amis, j’aijoué Incorporation of the verb être 1. Pourquoi ils-sont aiment de couleur rouge? 2. Où es-tu voyager? The use of the auxilary être on the other hand was originated from pure addition error (refer to Sentence 1) and the influence of English (in Sentence 2). For the second sentence, the verb être was used to illustrate the present continuous tense in English. In this example, the respondent tried to express “where are you travelling”. In French, to express the present continuous tense, one can use either the present tense or the expressionêtre en train de + verb in the infinitive form (to be in the process of).In the second sentence, the present tense was more appropriate to be used, thus, the correct sentence was où voyages-tu. This error was defined by Taylors (1975) as “error which can be attributed to the application of a rule of English in an inappropriate situation”. Fig. 4: Types of addition errors by advanced learners of French in their written composition. Misordering Errors: Misordering errors occurred in this study as a result of the “incorrect placement of a morpheme or group of morphemes in an utterance” (Dulay, Burt & Krashen, 1982: 162). This error frequently took place when the learners produce written or spoken sentences in the target language using “word-for-word translation of native language surface structures” (Dulay, Burt and Krashen 1982: 163). In this research, it was due the learners of French were used to the sentence structures of the mother tongue or second language, that they spontaneously applied the structure in the French sentences they built. For exemple: 1. C’est une tradisionnel vetement. Correct phrase: C’est le vêtement traditionnel 2. C’est les alimentaires les trois different culture en Malaisie . Correct phrase: Ce sont des nourritures de trois cultures différentes en Malaisie. 3. D’accord, prochaine fois vous allez visiter moi pendant la fête. Correct phrase: D’accord, la prochaine fois vous allez me rendre visite pendant la fête. 318 Aust. J. Basic & Appl. Sci., 6(13): 312-326, 2012 In the first two sentences, the placement of the adjectives followed English structure, which was placed before the noun. In French most of the adjectives were placed at the back of the noun described. The third sentence misordering error, on the other hand was due to the translation from English “You are going to visit me” which resulted the complement to be replaced by stressed pronoun and placed after the verb. This study explored the grammatical errors made by Malaysian students in their French advanced writing course. The result indicated that misformation errors were the dominant errors made by the students, in particular the misformation of verbs and nouns. Among the reasons for the errors were the utilization of fauxamis, overgeneralization and borrowing effect mainly from English. The reasons were also similar to the other errors committed, namely omission, addition and misordering errors. The result supported the findings by Hazlina Abdul Halimetal. (2011a) on the errors made by Malaysian students learning intermediate French, who produced misformation and omission errors extensively in their paragragh writing. Conclusion: Overall, this study adopted the surface structure taxonomy of errors from Dulay, Burt &Krashen(1982) to look at the grammatical errors made the students in their advanced written task in French. The exploratory study is beneficial for both learners and teachers of French as a foreign language, to accentuate on grammatical domains that create and potentially able to generate errors in French writing. Parallel to that, the study is useful for teachers to identify at the beginning point and to keep on emphasising and explaining to the learners the errors and the differences that make the French sentence erroneous to avoid the same occurs repetitively in future.Similar investigation can be performed more intensively on the dominant sub-strategies (i.e. misformation errors) to deeper understanding of the root of the errors and to find solutions that would be beneficial to French teaching and learning.
