BRAWLING, FOWL-MOUTHED, HYSTERICALLY FUNNY FICTIONAL HOCKEY TEAM
IN WHAT JUST MIGHT BE 2012’S ANSWER
TO SLAP SHOT.
It’s a hot-button issue for Canadians: hockey
violence is front-page news these days. Last
year, fans of our national sport were shocked
to hear about the apparent suicide of former
Toronto Maple Leafs tough guy Wade Belak, a
tragedy that came not long after the deaths
of the Vancouver Canucks’ Rick Rypien and
the New York Rangers’ Derek “Boogeyman”
Boogaard, whose death was linked to alcohol
and prescription drugs.
The closely spaced demise of three NHL
brawlers, coupled with an increasing number
of high-profile injuries and concussions sidelining players such as Sidney Crosby, put the
spotlight on an issue that weighs heavily on
many hockey fans’ minds.

C’est le sujet sportif de l’heure : la violence au
hockey occupe une place de choix dans l’arène
médiatique. L’an dernier, les amateurs de notre
sport national ont été choqués d’apprendre la
mort, apparemment un suicide, de Wade Belak,
anciennement des Maple Leafs de Toronto. Un
décès qui faisait suite à celui de Rick Rypien,
des Canucks de Vancouver, et à la mort liée à
l’alcool et à la drogue de Derek « Boogeyman »
Boogaard, des Rangers de New York.
Ces trois disparitions de bagarreurs de la LNH,
en plus de l’augmentation des blessures et
des commotions cérébrales chez les joueurs
(dont un certain Crosby), ont mis en lumière
les préoccupations de nombreux amateurs de
hockey.

Into this rather grim environment comes a new movie, opening nationwide in late February. Goon, a comedy directed by
pro football player-turned-filmmaker Michael Dowse, is chock
full of brawls and fisticuffs. The story follows the adventures
of Doug Glatt (Seann William Scott), a somewhat dimwitted
bouncer who comes out of nowhere to become the goon for the
local minor-league team. His assigned roommate on the road
is Xavier Laflamme (Marc-André Grondin), a young hotshot
from Quebec who spends most of his spare time ingesting illicit
substances and chasing young lovelies.
Add a dash of bawdy humour from Liev Schreiber and Eugene
Levy, and you have a good idea of what it’s all about. In tried
and true sports comedy tradition, the film is literally hard-hitting. Some critics have even compared it to the 1977 classic,
Slap Shot.

But with the storm of bad press around hockey violence, is it still
possible to make a funny movie about that kind of brutality? The
question is a little uncomfortable for Scott: “When the producers
talked to me about the players’ deaths and the media frenzy,
I had to stop and think. I’m an American. We don’t talk a
whole lot about violence in sports, but I’m sure we have just
as much of it. Then, I said to myself that we’re just making fun
of these gladiators on ice. None of our characters is portrayed
as especially smart when he’s fighting. We’re not glorifying
violence, we’re showing how ridiculous it is.”
“Violence in hockey is a deplorable thing,” says Grondin. “But
most of the incidents making the headlines happened after
we filmed Goon. We weren’t thinking about those stories at the
time, we were just trying to make a good movie. And I think
we’ve done that.”
“We filmed in Winnipeg at night,” says Scott, best known for his
Stifler character in the American Pie movies. “The fights weren’t
highly choreographed, so we had to take real hits without
knowing where they’d be coming from. And I’d also find myself
face-to-face with real NHL players who weren’t fighting for the
first time. On skates!”
Working on ice didn’t come naturally to Scott, who learned to
skate as an adult. Ditto for Montrealer Marc-André Grondin, for
whom Goon is his second English-language movie. “I’ve never
been very good on ice,” the C.R.A.Z.Y. star confessed. “But I’ve
always been a big hockey fan. Imagine that: the producers paid
me to learn to play better. Pretty wild!”

C’est dans ce climat pour le moins austère que l’on retrouvera, sur les écrans de cinéma partout au pays ce mois-ci, Goon,
un long-métrage où s’enchaînent bagarres et coups de poing…
Or Goon est une comédie réalisée par Michael Dowse, un ancien
joueur de football devenu cinéaste. On y raconte l’histoire de
Doug Glatt (Seann William Scott), un portier de bar un peu bête
sorti de l’obscurité pour devenir l’homme fort, le goon de service
(en anglais : homme de main), d’une équipe de ligue mineure.
On lui impose comme colocataire Xavier Laflamme (Marc-André
Grondin), un jeune joueur étoile québécois qui pense surtout à
absorber des substances illicites et à enchaîner les conquêtes
sur l’oreiller.
Ajoutez à cela l’humour grivois de Liev Schreiber et d’Eugene
Levy, et vous aurez un bel aperçu de la saveur de cette glace.
Dans la tradition des longs métrages humoristiques sportifs, ce
film frappe fort. Plusieurs critiques le comparent déjà à Slap Shot,
le classique de 1977!
Mais avec la mauvaise presse qui entoure la violence au hockey,
peut-on encore immortaliser de telles batailles au grand écran?
La question gêne un peu Seann William Scott : « Lorsque les
producteurs du film m’ont parlé des décès des joueurs et
de tout le brouhaha médiatique, j’ai dû y réfléchir. Je suis américain. Chez nous, on ne parle pas beaucoup de la violence dans le
sport, mais je suis persuadé qu’il y en a autant. Puis, je me suis
dit qu’on ne faisait que rire de ces gladiateurs sur glace. Aucun
de nos personnages n’est particulièrement brillant lorsqu’il se
bat. On ne valorise pas la violence. On montre à quel point elle
est ridicule. »
« La violence au hockey est quelque chose de déplorable, ajoute
Marc-André Grondin. Mais la plupart des cas qu’on a vus dans
l’actualité sont sortis après le tournage de Goon. Nous n’avions
rien de tout cela en tête. Nous ne pensions qu’à faire un bon film.
Et ça, je crois, nous l’avons réussi! »

« On a tourné de nuit à Winnipeg, raconte Scott, qui a donné vie
au célèbre Stifler de la franchise American Pie. Les combats étaient
peu chorégraphiés, il fallait donc encaisser les coups, sans trop
savoir d’où ils viendraient. En plus, je me retrouvais souvent devant
de vrais joueurs de la LNH, qui n’en étaient pas à leurs premières
bagarres… Et tout ça sur des patins! »
Se retrouver sur deux lames n’était pas inné pour l’acteur américain,
qui a appris à patiner qu’à l’âge adulte; ni pour le Montréalais
Marc-André Grondin : « Je n’ai jamais été vraiment bon sur la glace,
avoue la star de C.R.A.Z.Y., qui tournait son deuxième long-métrage
en anglais. Mais j’ai toujours été un grand fan de hockey. Imaginez.
Les producteurs m’ont payé pour que j’apprenne à devenir un
meilleur joueur. Tout un fantasme! »
