modern - Bruun Rasmussen Kunstauktioner
Velkommen til moderne juni-auktion
hos Bruun Rasmussen
Markedet for moderne kunst
museer i Danmark.
Welcome to the Modern Art June Sale
at Bruun Rasmussen
This catalogue reflects a number of innovations. The Modern Art market is in constant motion
and it is our natural ambition to follow the market’s developments and fluctuations as closely as
possible – for the benefit of both buyers and sellers. Acknowledging the increasing globalisation
also characterising the art market, we have chosen, for the first time, to publish our catalogue in
English. We hope the initiative will be well received and at the same time, we would like to emphasize that all catalogue texts can still be found in Danish at www.bruun-rasmussen.dk.
For many years, the Modern Art and Design Sales at Bruun Rasmussen have been held in April and
in October. Introducing an additional Modern auction, bringing the total number of annual Modern
auctions up to three, is yet another expression of the prospering of Modern Art in recent years.
As a leading auction house, we wish to be the best in our markets, at the same time contributing
to the cultivation of new markets. Consequently, for this sale we are introducing a new field of art:
Chinese Contemporary Art. The sale includes works by a group of young Chinese artists, setting the
agenda for the prosperous, or should we say roaring, Chinese art scene. At the same time, we have
been entrusted to sell works from a number of prominent Danish private collections, enabling us
to give auction debuts to a number of very young Danish artists, as well as to young international
artists who have dominated Danish galleries and museums in recent years.
In addition to these innovations, the auction features an impressive array of Modern Art, from
Classic Modernism to Contemporary Art. We are continuing the sale of the collection of the
architect Robert Dahlmann Olsen by offering a group of fine paper works by the Icelandic artist
Svavar Gudnason. In the category of Cobra Art you will find a remarkable Asger Jorn work from the
1960s as well as three early paintings by Egill Jacobsen, all of museum quality. In the Spring sale,
we saw an almost exploding increase in the demand for works by Michael Kvium. The artist is also
represented in the present sale with a varied selection of high quality works, including the monumental ‘Cuba Libre’, without exaggeration a principal work by the artist.
We hope you will enjoy the catalogue!

MELANIA MUTERMILCH)
b. 1876, d. 1967
Landscape, Avignon, ca. 1932-37. Signed Muter.
Oil on board. 54 x 65 cm.
Exhibited: Galerie Gmurzynska, Cologne, 1967, Mela
Muter 1876-1967, Retrospektiv Ausstellung, cat. no. 17.
Provenance: Galerie Gmurzynska, Cologne (exhibition
sticker on the reverse). Acquired here by present owner's family in the late 1960s. The present owner's father was the brother of Tosia Gmurzynska, the founder
of Galerie Gmurzynska.
Mela Muter was born in Poland by Jewish parents but
lived and worked the greater part of her life in France,
obtaining French citizenship in 1927. Her studio was
situated in the heart of Paris and she belonged to the
group of international artists of the so-called École de
Paris. Muter's participation in the creative environments of Paris in the beginning of the 20th century is
documented by her many fine portraits of artists, musicians and intellectuals, including Anatole France,
Romain Rolland and Diego Rivera. Rainer Maria Rilke
was also part of Muter's circle of acquaintances.
118
Like other émigré artists Muter's work was influenced
by the artistic ideas of the period mingled with a Polish
tone from her homeland.
In her landscapes, portraits and still lives Muter was
influenced by the Modernism of the early decades of
the 20th century with strong roots in the art of Paul
Cézanne but also Paul Gauguin and van Gogh. In both
imagery and choice of motif, the present painting seems inspired by Cézanne and his landscapes from the
South of France. With thick brushstrokes and a tactile
quality Muter has depicted the landscape from Avignon, where she spend the years during the Second
World War and which was also the destination of several of her journeys before that.

From 1922 to 1926 Johannes Hansen studied at The Royal Danish Academy of Art under Professor and Sculptor Einar Utzon-Frank - the key figure in Danish classicistic sculpture during the inter-war period. Johannes Hansen's sculptures are
likewise following the classicistic tradition - and are characterized by a discreet stylized naturalism. With its quiet expression and soulfulness, the offered figure is a prominent and
nicely patinated example of the artist's work.

at large. Taking well-known symbols and figures such
as the heart, the egg, the cross and the wheel as his
point of departure, Heerup was able to figuratively express everyday life events and in this way transform
some of the great issues of life into understandable
pictorial images. In the present painting "Manden og

Exhibited: Biennial of São Paolo 1971. Reprod. in the
catalogue.
In the revised catalogue of Egill Jacobsen’s work Per
Hovdenakk writes:
“The idea behind using the mask in the composition of
a painting is to provide the colours with a supporting
structure, in order to create a rhythmical basis for the
disposition of the colours. For Egill Jacobsen, the mask
cannot be associated with one single physiognomy in
particular; the mask is rather the face of all faces. The
mask should not hide the face behind, as the Carnival
mask does, but rather should express and make things
visible. The mask is a sign, a synthesis. The basic forms
of the mask consist in quick curves, oblique verticals
and floating triangles. The elements are painted with
the colours still visible in the brushstrokes. At times,
the mask resembles rhythmical exercises in the geometry of spontaneity”.

Henry Heerup exhibited his ”rubbish

at the Linjen Exhibition. Being something new and exciting, the figures made a great sensation. The greater part of the visitors considered
the sculptures pure entertainment
and Heerup as a bit of an eccentric.
Heerup didn't see this as a negative
thing; the sculptures were meant to
provoke. Heerup himself has defined
the making of the rubbish sculptures
as follows: ”Children have always

In 1956 the Dutch artist Karel Appel was commissioned to do the mural for the Stedelijk Museum’s new
restaurant. For the consignment he made use of

stained glass for the first time. The vivid colours and
the bird motif are, however, very characteristic elements of the art of the Cobra artist Appel for whom
colour was a vital part of a spontaneous expression.
The Stedelijk Museum was closely connected with the
Cobra group and plays an important role in the history
of the movement. In November 1949, the Museum
was housing the “International Exhibition of Experimenting Art”, organised by the Dutch group of experimenting artists, including Appel. The exhibition caused
great sensation and must be considered to be one of
the most important manifestations of Cobra art during
the movement’s short lifetime (1948-51).

With an artistic career covering a period of more than
70 years, Carl-Henning Pedersen, who died earlier this
year, is undoubtedly one of the most prominent artists
in Danish 20th century art. By way of early attempts in
constructive cubism, Carl-Henning Pedersen had, by
the end of the 1930s, reached the spontaneous ab-

stract expression that was to give him his breakthrough as an artist and, not least, point towards the
Cobra movement ten years ahead. Carl-Henning Pedersen's works are inspired by both fables and primitive art, with canvases populated by human figures, fantasy animals and birds that seem to be floating freely in
optimistic and richly coloured universes. The present
painting is a monumental work from the artist's late
production.

In the year 1944, Egill Jacobsen painted a number of
paintings with the Carnival theme. The present painting depicts this very Parade or Carnival on its way
through the town. Surrounding the Parade are spectators and onlookers, some slightly frightened, others
shouting with joy. The choice of colours was the same
in all the Carnival paintings, contributing to the substantiation of the play of colours. The strong vivid colours no longer surprise the modern beholder of today,
as it did in the 1940s. On the contrary, the colours have
matured, enveloping the painting in a sort of warmth,
presence and imagination originally intended by the
artist.

1964 has been called the crucial years in the title of
this book, because these years encompass Jorn's emergence as a major figure in European art. In the middle
years of the decade from 1956 to 1969, he produces
works of the highest quality. Jorn once explained this
phenomenon to me by comparing himself to a conjurer. "The conjurer he said stands in front of his
audience and gives a dazzling display in the air with
his right hand, while he is quietly using his left hand
under the table to boil himself an egg"".

two paintings - both created during the Second World
War. The period 1940-1946 has been characterized as
an intermezzo in the artist's production. During these
years, placed between the artist's surrealist phase in
the 1930s and his position in the 1950s as a pioneer in
concrete art and in international modernism, Mortensen is working with a kind of expressionism, in many
ways reminiscent of, and fully equalling, the future
Cobra painters. Richard Mortensen was thus contribu-

ting considerably to the development of the spontaneous abstract painting in Denmark even though he was
later to repress this part of his efforts - and was to be
known for exactly the opposite. Almost all his works
from the war years reflect on the war with its associations, but ascribe a concrete symbolic content to these
works cannot easily be done as the figuration tends
towards dissolution and abstraction.

Gunnar Jespersen (1922-1994) was trained as a journalist. From 1958 he worked as an art critic at the B.T., at
the Berlingske Tidende and later on at the Politiken.
Gunnar Jespersen was an early and crucial promoter of
Danish post-war art, not least because of his important
book "De Abstrakte" (1967) on a number of the artists
belonging to the Cobra movement. He was a personal
friend of several of the artists he wrote about, including
Egill Jacobsen whom he met in the late 1950's. Due to
Gunnar Jespersen's efforts, an important selection of
Egill Jacobsen's early works, including the present work
offered for sale, were preserved and saved from destruction after having been stored carelessly for a number of
years in an outhouse by the artist's studio. The present
painting was given to Gunnar Jespersen by Egill Jacobsen in acknowledgement of his efforts in this connection.

The present work is a powerful example of Per Kirkeby’s spontaneous expressionistic period in the 1970s.
In his works from the 1960s, Per Kirkeby was attaching
great importance to the simple silhouette-like motifs,
but from about 1970 he started dissolving the motif,
stressing the expressionistic aspect. The paintings from
this period are all created with the same technique and

Ragnhild Keyser is an early key figure within abstract painting in Norway. From 1924 to 1926 she was a student of Fernand Léger at Academie Moderne and in longer periods from
1919 to 1927 she lived in Paris. She participated in several
exhibitions in Paris, including the Salon des Indépendants
1923, 1926 and 1927. In 1927 she was part of the exhibition
"Eight Scandinavian Cubists" at The Artist's Union in Oslo
together with the Danish painter Franciska Clausen among
others. Following her permanent return to Norway Ragnhild
Keyser left the abstract idiom in favour of a more naturalistic way of expression.

The German artist Rudolf Bauer (1889-1953) left his

a member of the Berlin group Der Sturm from 1912, later founding the gallery Das Geistreich (“Realm of the
Spirit”) in 1930. Bauer was arrested by the Nazis in
1938. The following year he immigrated to the United
States.
BRUUN RASMUSSEN BREDGADE AUCTION 772
Bauer’s life and career – and the destiny of his paintings – are closely connected to Baroness Hilla von Rebay, who became director of the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation with great influence on the Guggenheim Collection that included several works by Bauer.
Bauer’s abstract non-objective art was influenced by
the art of Wassily Kandinsky whom he met at the Bauhaus in Dessau. Like Kandinsky, Bauer was inspired by
the theosophical and spiritual currents of his time. The
present work is a fine example of Bauer’s abstractions
- arrangements of circles and lines creating their own
kind of reality to be felt and sensed rather than recognized.

MODERN
The development of modern Chinese art
In China, the time from 1900 until the Communist
Maoist takeover in 1949 was characterized by a great
degree of instability. The production of art was based
on a Soviet model with strong Maoist undercurrents
in which the visual arts and especially depictions of
persons were subjected to three specific standards:
Positive, Strong and Heroic. Thus, art served the interests of the Party, exclusively.
ism in which the critical elements are often hidden behind a figuratively excessive visual idiom.
In 1992 a group of artists from Yuan MingYuan relocated to Song Zhuang, a village about 20 kilometres
away from Beijing. Song Zhuang rapidly became the
centre of avant-garde art in China and today more
than 400 artists live in this area. These include Liu
Yaoxian and Yan Yu whose works “Swimming Man”
and “Smoker” are offered for sale at this auction.
Until the early 1980s, where the policy of ‘the open
door’ came into effect, the Chinese population and
Chinese artists had been totally excluded from European and Western art. The subsequent introduction of
names such as Marcel Duchamp, Andy Warhol and
Keith Haring was of crucial importance to the highly
experimental art scene that shot up in China in the
1980s.
Freedom and optimism got a snap break i June 1989
when the authorities send in the military to fight
demonstrators on the Tiananmen Square in Beijing.
The Chinese art scene continues to grow and develop.
Internationally, Asian art is met with increasing interest, and this year the Guggenheim and Museum of
Modern Art in New York, for example, have chosen to
highlight Chinese art by way of special exhibitions in
Beijing. This, in combination with financially strong
collectors and museums that are often racing each
other for the opportunity to acquire selected works,
could indicate that perhaps the revolution in Chinese
art has only just begun.
The sharp contrast between fierce political and cultural
control , capitalism and consumer culture on the rise became the main source of what was, properly speaking,
the first modern Chinese art current called Cynical Real-
Here, Bruun Rasmussen Auctioneers of Fine Art

KASPAR BONNÉN
b. 1968
Composition. Signed on the reverse Kaspar Bonnén
1999. Oil on canvas. 155 x 125 cm.
Provenance: Galerie Mikael Andersen, Copenhagen.
Since the mid 1990s the artist and writer Kaspar Bonnén has concerned himself with the depiction and exploration of spaces and spatialities. In his paintings,
often based on his own home and private life, you will
find multiple layers of spatialities in the shape of colourful silhouettes overlapping each other. In larger
compositions, ordinary articles for everyday use and
pieces of furniture are mixed together tending towards
pure abstractions. For the artist, a space is not just a
physical occurrence, but also and just as much a mental state of mind. In the article "Jeg vil være rum" ("I
want to be space") from 2004, Bonnén writes: "Using
BRUUN RASMUSSEN BREDGADE AUCTION 772
simple forms, I try to create the illusion of spaces and a
multiplicity of ways in which they can manifest themselves. In this way the paintings become a cross-section of, or an insight into, a mental process, or a description of the many possible spatial constitutions,
such as when you sit in a room reading a text and are
filled with the images of the story. At the same time,
you might be thinking of your partner or about something you forgot to do today. Many different spaces
and experiences pulse within the brain as electrical reverberations".
Kaspar Bonnén is represented at Statens Museum for
Kunst, ARoS Aarhus Kunstmuseum, Arken Museum of
Modern Art and the Sammlung Essl in Austria.

Exhibited: "Michael Kvium - Jaywalking Eyes",

April 2006, reprod. in the catalogue p. 48.
Provenance: Galleri Faurschou, Copenhagen.
In his book from 2004, Lennart Gottlieb reflects
on Kvium's return to the painting after having
worked with Christian Lemmerz during the period 1998-2000 on the film 'The Wake': "(...) There
is the doubt, not only about the picture, but also
about the connected narrative, like in other
paintings from 2000 and 2001 where the painting's narrative can no longer be contained in
BRUUN RASMUSSEN BREDGADE AUCTION 772
one single painting but has to be broken up in collagelike groupings of canvases (...). 'The Wake' has been a
tour de force and whether it will open up to a new
fund of pictures and picturesques energies for the
painter Kvium or whether it has actually drained the
painting of it's previous meanings to the painter, are
two possible consequences. But if you take the ironic
work 'Cuba Libre' from 2001, consisting in four paintings, showing respectively the upper part of a body of
a black man with a white stigmatized hand, a white
man's lower part of the body, the Cuban flag and a tattoo of a Marilyn Monroe type from the 1950s, it points
to the fact that there could be a third option in addition to the film's potentially opening or closing effect:
that Kvium is quite simply opening the floodgates of
the mixture of the media and the paintings. We cannot
know. But if you expect Kvium to return to what he
was or what we know, you can be quite certain of the
fact that it won't be so. Simply because it has never
occurred before".

In the catalogue for the exhibition "Surrealisme"
("Surrealism") in the Raadhuspladsen exhibition
house, October 1940, the artist has written the following programme text, which is almost entirely illustrated by the present painting: "I see the fire, the water, the air and the earth, I see the forest, the ocean,
the fields and the mountains, I see the flowers, the fruits, the stones, the waves and the clouds, I see the light

and the shadow. I see it all in man. Mankind reproduces itself in nature and makes everything human.
Mankind has created the houses, the cities, the furniture and the cars, but man has also created the trees,
the forests, the mountains and the oceans. In everything I see, I read the signature of man. As nature is infinite, it is also infinite in man. Mankind is always
unconsciously creating. This creative power of mankind is the unlimited inspiration for my work. I found
the fire, the water, the air and the earth, I found the
trees, the flowers and the stones, I found it all in YOU!".

Provenance: Acquired directly from the artist by the

1987 is a year of change in the artistic development of
Michael Kvium. In the years after 1985 Kvium had become recognized for his merciless depictions of human
BRUUN RASMUSSEN BREDGADE AUCTION 772
beings placed in all sorts of painful and cruel situations
going beyond normal limits, but in about 1987 his
works had become more abstract for a time with paintings of amorphous biological growths often placed in
indefinable landscape spaces. Right in the middle of
this transformation you find the painting "Mig og Vermeer" ("Me and Vermeer"), with elements from both
Kvium's previous and future works. To our knowledge
the painting is Kvium's only direct historical paraphrase in full size. It is based upon Johannes Vermeer's "A
Lady Writing" from ca. 1665 (National Gallery of Art,
Washington DC), depicting an elegant young woman
wearing a fur coat and pearl earrings, placed in an interior flooded with soft light. Kvium is surprisingly loyal
to his source but the finely modeled face of Vermeer's
lady has been changed into an abnormally growing boil, making the painting typical of Kvium's usual way of
exceeding and mixing the beautiful and the ugly, the
good and the bad, the ideal and the abominable.

Exhibited: Charlottenborg Efterårsudstilling, Copenhagen, 1 - 23 October 2005, cat. no. 23.
Provenance: Acquired directly from the artist.
Since graduating from the Royal Danish Academy of
Fine Arts in 2000, Kristian Devantier has made a name
for himself among the Danish figurative painters attaching importance to the painting and its qualities. In
the pictorial universe of Kristian Devantier, you are immediately captured by the areas of monochrome
strong colours and by this, involved in the narrative
universe of the artist. Devantier's figures are highly
200
stylized and resemble most of all figures from comic
strips. He never paints faces, the reason for this figuring in an interview with the artist: "It is up to you to
put eyes and noses on the figures. I paint surfaces, you
see. I am not very good at drawing eyes and noses and
mouths on the figures so that's why they are faceless.
They appear much clearer now. Does that mean that
you are jumping into these figures? You might be able
to do so. The figures are taking you by the hand, leading you into this universe". In the pictorial universe of
Devantier you are thus invited to a unique experience
with only the viewers' own limits putting an end to the
adventure unfolding.

Exhibited: "High & Low", Fine Art Fair Frankfurt, 15 19 March 2006.
Provenance: Contemporary Fine Arts, Berlin.
Since his breakthrough in the late 1990s, Tal R has almost become the epitome of the new Danish figurative
painting. He has worked intensely with a synthesis of
media - painting, photography, drawings and cuttings
- and with imaginative overlaps of personal stories,
popular culture and history of art. In a number of paintings since roughly 2003 and onwards, the artist has
BRUUN RASMUSSEN BREDGADE AUCTION 772
however moved away from the recognizable. The painting "Sea Sex" is an almost ornamental motif - decoratively embellished with coloured drawing pins. According to the artist, the figurative is nothing more
than a pretext - or a short cut to the picturesque: "I am
preoccupied with a kind of figurative painting but it is
simply for having something people can relate to. The
story in the paintings is only bait so that we have something to talk about (...) I am not preoccupied with
yet another little quirky story about a pixy with a special hairdo. What interests me is to see how the artist
has made his decisions through the substance (...) True
imagination to me is when people make imaginative
decisions through the substance".

ALLAN OTTE
b. 1978
"U.T". Signed on the reverse Allan Otte 2004.
Oil on board. 53 x 71 cm.
Provenance: Galleri Christoffer Egelund, Copenhagen.
In cool unsentimental paintings Allan Otte - in his own
original way - takes up the threads from the Danish
"photographic painters" of the 1970s and 80s such as
Niels Strøbek and Bjarke Regn Svendsen. At the same
time a dialogue can be sensed with both the Düsseldorf School of photography, soberly recording the reality, and the more nostalgic Danish realist painters of
the 1990s such as Preben Fjederholt and Ulrik Møller.
In a recent series of paintings demanding high technical skills, Otte has taken a merciless almost surgical
piercing glance at the Danish landscape, especially the
effective industrialized agriculture. Otte's depiction is
202
far from farmhouse idyll and the nostalgic country life
of the 1950s. The motifs appear to be objective but
they have very much been manipulated and "sampled"
by means of computer software and image editing
programmes before having been transfered to the
canvases with a detailed technique.
Allan Otte will graduate from the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in the summer of 2007 but the young
artist has already participated in several exhibitions at
galleries and museums - including the presentation of
Danish contemporary art at Arken Museum of Modern

colour photographs taken at Christiania in Copenhagen.
What’s special about this series is not just its location
but also the fact that the artist has used a particular
cinematic effect called the “day for night” technique.
This technique is used for scenes in daylight but on the
camera, it gives a nightly dreamlike touch. The idea
behind the photo series was an attempt to depict the
ambiguity characterizing the area Christiania. The
melting together of day and night with this dreamlike
touch can thus be seen as a reference to the community of Christiania, where the dream of a free society
exists in spite of the resistance from the community
surrounding it. Joachim Koester graduated from the
Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in 1993.

In his paintings, Peter Rune Christiansen is flirting with the
romantic landscape painting. “A renewer of Danish landscape
painting”, the artist has been termed by the art historian
Bente Scavenius in relation to Peter Rune Christiansen’s first
solo exhibition at the gallery Helene Nyborg Contemporary
in May 2006.
In the works of Peter Rune Christiansen, pictorial means are
combined with musical elements. By way of various forms of
music, classical as well as digital, Peter Rune Christiansen is
capable of painting complex and unpredictable systems, resembling topographical maps. Having music as sparring
partner enables the artist to provide his paintings with a
speaking tube through which the music emanates, at the same time illustrating by images the otherwise invisible tones.

"Tangel". Signed on the reverse Jens Robert Jørgensen 2004. Oil on wooden box. 122 x 122 x 10 cm.
Exhibited: "Tingeltangel", Martin Asbaek Projects, Copenhagen, 13 January - 12 February 2005.
The present work was part of Jens Robert Jørgensen's
first solo exhibition in 2005, the first larger presentation of the artist's complete works. Jørgensen's paintings are vividly coloured pattern constructions with
no precise direction; the patterns move about in all directions creating a powerful three-dimensional effect.
Both in a literal sense, the patterns continuing on the
10 cm wide sides, and also in an optic way as the pictures are constructed with layers on layers of drawings
and spatialities. The works are thus unique crossings of
paintings and physically importunate objects in space.
BRUUN RASMUSSEN BREDGADE AUCTION 772
In a sense Jens Robert Jørgensen's work seem to build
on and send greetings to ancient aboriginal art where
natural occurrences have been transformed into a
dreamlike universe through abstraction. In contemporary art of a more recent date, Jørgensen seems related to the English artist Chris Ofili who draws upon
African/Caribbean folk art and transforms it into a
modern, often highly decorative, context.
Jens Robert Jørgensen will graduate from the Royal
Danish Academy of Fine Arts in the summer of 2007.
He is represented at the Danish National Gallery and
at the Arken Museum of Modern Art where he has also
participated in the exhibition GO FIGURE! Young Danish Painting, in the summer of 2006.

SIMON KEENLEYSIDE
b. 1975
"A place to wake up in". Signed on the reverse Simon
Keenleyside 2005. Oil on canvas. 61 x 69 cm.
Provenance: Acquired directly from the artist.
The British artist Simon Keenleyside graduated from
the Painting Department at Brighton University and
the Royal College of Art in London. In 2002 he was the
first winner of the "BOC Emerging Artist Award" in keen competition with more than 200 young artists from
across the UK, the judging panel including the prominent critic Matthew Collings and the British pop artist
206
Sir Peter Blake. The present work is typical of Keenleyside's imagery where familiar motifs from the outskirts
of town, and often forest scenes, have been made into
something unknown, disturbing and mysterious, on richly coloured canvases painted with thick layers of
paint.
In Denmark Simon Keenleyside is represented by the
gallery Mogadishni where he has participated in several exhibitions.

"The salvation", 1977. From the series "Mille et une Nuit", 1977-81.
Signed on the reverse monogram 1977. Oil on canvas.
97 x 52 cm.
Literature: Hazan: "Erró 1974-1986 - Catalogue Général", cat. no. 364,

Provenance: Danish Private Collection.

During the 1950s the Icelandic artist
Erró studied at the Art School in Reykjavik and at the Academies in Oslo and
in Florence, combining it with several
study visits to Ravenna, Germany and
Spain. Through these training years
Erró obtained a very personal mastery
of technique and pictorial means that
gave him a leading position at the international art scene as early as in the
early 1960s. Erró's paintings are based
on a true variety, or a chaotic confusion, of influences and styles in art history - from Byzantine mosaics and
Renaissance Art to Surrealism, pop art
and comic strips. In this sense Erró can
very much be described as a postmodernist eclectic maker of paintings. "I
paint because painting is a private
Utopia", the artist has stated. His
works can be characterized as artistic
crosscuts from various periods, spaces
and contexts that are apparently entirely incompatible in real world but
turn out not to be so. In his work "The
salvation" from 1977, the Bible story
of the Flood has been transformed into a Futurist scene where Noah's ark
has become a space rocket.
In 1989 Erró donated a large collection of his works to the city of Reykjavik where they can now be seen at the
Reykjavik Art Museum. The artist is represented at a number of international museums, including Louisiana
Museum of Modern Art in Humlebæk,
Museum Ludwig in Koblenz and Musée National d'Art Moderne, Centre
Pompidou in Paris.

Vin-domaine i Beaujolais
hektar p.a.

1. januar 1995 trådte nye love i kraft i EU vedrørende

handles til brugt moms.
As of 1 January 1995 new EC regulations came into
effect regarding the sale of secondhand goods, works of
art, collector’s items and antiques; these items may now
be traded under the Auctioneers’ Margin Scheme.
pris. I auktionsomkostninger er indregnet ikke fradragsberettiget moms.

§ 1. Budgivning
varen købes i fuld moms.
For visse udenlandske købere gælder der særlige regler for
afgiftsfritagelse jvf. § 3.
at overstige forfalden gæld.
286
§ 3. Afgiftsfritagelse
§ 4. Afgiftsbetaling

fremsættes skriftligt over for Bruun Rasmussen inden 2 år efter

FRITAGELSE FOR DANSK FULDMOMS

§ 1. Bidding
The buyer shall be the highest bidder at the “hammer price”. Any
person bidding on behalf of a third party shall be liable in surety
for completion of the sale.
At the request of Bruun Rasmussen Kunstauktioner (hereinafter
called Bruun Rasmussen), all bidders, whether they wish to make
bids in person at the place of auction or commission bids by letter or fax or direct telephone bids, should be able to document
their ability to pay and be able to provide proof of identity at
any time. Bruun Rasmussen is entitled to refuse to accept a bid
if, when requested, adequate security or adequate payment on
account has not been rendered.
Bids should be made by the bidder in person at the place of auction or by written commission. Telephone bidding is possible
within certain conditions made out by Bruun Rasmussen. Bruun
Rasmussen is not to be held responsible for any errors that may
occur using this service. The auctioneer shall have absolute discretion as to the increment of the bids. The auctioneer will also
make decisions in all cases of doubt regarding the bidding.
§ 2. Payment
The purchase price is the hammer price plus 25% in buyer’s premium, including VAT, for lots sold subject to the special VAT
scheme for sales of Works of Art, Collectors’ items and Antiques,
and secondhand goods by Public Auction (hereinafter called Special VAT).
Certain lots are sold in accordance with specific rules on normal VAT arrangement (hereinafter called normal VAT), so that
the purchase price is the hammer price plus an additional 20%
in buyer’s premium and VAT of 25% levied on both the hammer
price and the buyer’s premium. The lots subject to Full VAT are
indicated as such in the catalogue with an asterix (*).
Danish VAT registered buyers shall provide us with documentation of their SE-/CVR-number (VAT No.) as this has to be quoted
on the invoice for goods bought at full VAT.
For some foreign buyers, specific VAT-exemption rules apply (cf.
Article 3). VAT-exemption does not apply to private buyers from
the EU who are considered as Danish buyers (cf. current Danish
legislation on Special VAT Scheme for Sales of Works of Art,
Collectors’ items and Antiques by Public Auction).
The purchase price falls due for payment when the goods have
been knocked down. Payment may be made in cash up to DKK
100,000, by Dankort, banker’s cheque, traveller’s cheque, Visa-,
Master-, Diners Club- or Eurocard. Personal foreign cheques may
only be used for payment by prior arrangement.
Payment may be made during or immediately after the auction.
Under all circumstances payment must be made no later than
eight days from the date of the invoice.
Should the purchase price not be paid by the due date, interest
at 1.5 % per new month will be charged.
If the purchase price and interest are not paid within eight
days after Bruun Rasmussen has sent its demand to the buyer,
Bruun Rasmussen shall be entitled to rescind the sale and resell
the goods at a Bruun Rasmussen auction or privately, and to
demand reimbursement of any related losses from the defaulting
buyer. Any further profit on the sale shall be payable to the person who had deposited the goods for sale by auction.
If the defaulting buyer is entitled to proceeds from a sale of
goods by Bruun Rasmussen, Bruun Rasmussen shall be entitled
to set off its receivables against its payables to the defaulting
buyer.
If the defaulting buyer has deposited other goods for sale,
Bruun Rasmussen shall be entitled to sell such goods at a Bruun
Rasmussen auction without being bound by the reserve stipulated by the defaulting buyer. The defautling buyer shall not be
entitled to demand the surrender of goods deposited for sale as
long as the debt payable to Bruun Rasmussen has not been discharged, regardless of whether the value of such goods may be
deemed to exceed the debt payable.
Bruun Rasmussen shall be entitled to refuse a bid made by a
buyer who is in default in respect to his payment obligations
288
to Bruun Rasmussen, as well as a bid made by a third party on
behalf of such a defaulting buyer. Bruun Rasmussen shall further
be entitled to demand a deposit as a condition of accepting any
future bids from such a purchaser.
§ 3. Exemption from VAT
Foreign buyers who fulfil the conditions stated below shall pay
20% of the hammer price in buyer’s premium and shall not be
subject to Danish taxes and duties:
A. Buyers residing in another EU Member State:
Buyers are exempt from paying Danish VAT as long as they
have provided Bruun Rasmussen with documentation of their
VAT registration. The VAT number will then be quoted on
Bruun Rasmussen’s invoice.
B. Buyers residing outside the EU:
1Dispatch through forwarding agent: Lots exported through a
forwarding agent approved by Bruun Rasmussen are exempt
from VAT.
2 Export as personal luggage: Goods may be exempt from
Danish VAT when the buyer personally takes the goods out
of the country as luggage, provided the following conditions
have been met:
The invoice must have been paid and the Danish duty of 25%
of the invoice amount must have been deposited with Bruun
Rasmussen.
a Buyers residing in Norway will be refunded the Danish VAT
as soon as the invoice of sale has been returned to Bruun
Rasmussen endorsed by the customs authorities of the country in question or by any other authority with jurisdiction
over matters of purchase tax with respect to official imports
of goods into the country in question if the purchase price
exceeds DKK 1,200.
b Buyers residing in other countries outside the EU will be
refunded the Danish VAT after the goods have been presented for customs clearance in connection with the departure of the buyer from the EU. The exporter’s form should be
returned to Bruun Rasmussen after being endorsed with the
customs authorities’ export certificate if the purchase price
exceeds DKK 300 This also applies to the Faroe Islands and
Greenland.
§ 4. Payment of taxes and duties
A. Buyers with VAT-registration in other EU member states who
do not wish to make use of Article 3 may instead choose to
purchase items subject to Special VAT/Normal VAT in the
same manner as private buyers. Bruun Rasmussen must be
notified of this before 10 a.m. on the following auction day.
B. Buyers with VAT-registration in Denmark may choose to purchase subject to Normal VAT at 25% of the hammer price
plus premium. Bruun Rasmussen must be notified of this
before 10 a.m. on the following auction day.
§ 5. Collection of purchases
The purchase price must be paid in full before the purchased lot
can be passed over to the buyer. From the time of the lot being
knocked down to the buyer, until its collection, the purchased
lot will be held at the buyer’s own expense and risk.
A storage fee will be charged for lots which have not been collected within 14 days after the time of the lot being knocked
down. Goods which have been paid for but not collected within 1 year will be resold at auction or privately at the buyer's
expense.
§ 6. Dispatch
Should Bruun Rasmussen undertake the packaging and for
warding of purchased goods, this shall be done at the buyer’s
BRUUN RASMUSSEN bredgade AUcTION 772
own expense and risk. Bruun Rasmussen shall thus not be held
liable neither for any damage caused to purchased goods during
dispatch nor for any missing consignments.
§ 7. Droit de Suite
Pursuant to current Danish legislation on Copyright, an artistic royalty shall be collected on works of modern art by all Danish and
some foreign artists. Bruun Rasmussen will from the buyer collect
the royalties required on behalf of the artists’ organisation Copy-Dan
for any work of art subject to this law. These works are identified in
the catalogue by CD for Copy-Dan, marked beside each relevant lot
number.
The artistic royalty will be calculated as follows for each work of art,
when the hammerprice exceeds DKK 1,863:
• 5% of the part of the hammerprice ranging from DKK 0 to
DKK 310.596 plus the buyer’s premium (20% excl. VAT)
• 3% of the part of the hammerprice ranging from DKK 310.596
to DKK 1,242,383 plus the buyer’s premium (20% excl. VAT)
• 1% of the part of the hammerprice ranging from DKK
1,242,383 to DKK 2,174,171 plus the buyer’s premium (20%
excl. VAT)
• 0.5% of the part of the hammerprice ranging from DKK
2,174,171 to DKK 3,105,958 plus the buyer’s premium (20%
excl. VAT)
• 0.25% of the part of the hammerprice lying above DKK
3,105,958 plus the buyer’s premium (20% excl. VAT)
The artistic royalty cannot exceed DKK 93,179 for each work of art.
§ 8. Export licence
Applications for an export licence must be made to the Danish
Cultural Assets Committee when required in accordance with
current Danish legislation on the protection and preservation of
cultural assets in Denmark. Where such a licence has not been
obtained, the foreign buyer will be informed thereof immediately after the lot has been knocked down to the buyer. Anot
her application will subsequently be sent to the Danish Cultural
Assets Committee by Bruun Rasmussen on behalf of the buyer,
now that the price is known. Should an export licence not be
granted, the Danish Cultural Assets Committee would be obliged
to acquire the purchased lot at the purchase price, and the buyer
would thus not be bound to the purchase.
§ 9. Cataloguing
All lots are sold in the condition in which they are found when
knocked down and as described in the catalogue with subse
quently published changes and modifications. Cataloguing is
done according to the best of Bruun Rasmussen’s knowledge
and on the cataloguing principles stated.
The lots auctioned are often of some age or of a kind which
makes it possible that they may contain defects, deficiencies, or
may have been subject to restoration or damage not necessarily
stated in the catalogue. Catalogue pictures are for identification
only and cannot be used for an evaluation of the condition of
the goods.
Any person who wishes to bid at an auction should therefore
sa-tisfy himself of the condition of the lots for which he intends
to bid by personal inspection at the preview held prior to the
auction. The catalogue description is an indication of the prevai
ling oppinion of scholars and expert at the time of the printing
of the catalogue. If any doubts should arise after the purchase
regarding the genuineness of the purchased lot or its confor
mance with the catalogue description, Bruun Rasmussen should
immediately be informed thereof.
Should the purchased lot be proved to be a forgery, or if the
catalogue description contains material errors which lead to
a considerably higher hammer price than that which a correct
catalogue description would presumably result in, the buyer shall
be entitled to cancel the purchase, after which the buyer shall be
reimbursed for the total purchase price paid, up till a maximum
amount of the highest estimated price stated in the catalogue
plus buyer's premium and VAT, when applicable.
For material errors in the catalogue description in respect to
measurements or weight, compensation shall only be paid on a
percentage basis in proportion to the difference.
The right of cancellation of a purchase in pursuance of the
present conditions can only be exercised by the party who has
bought the lot in question at Bruun Rasmussen and shall be subject to the presentation of a claim for cancellation in writing to
Bruun Rasmussen within 2 years of the purchase date and to the
purchased lot being returned to Bruun Rasmussen in the same
condition in any and all respects which the purchased lot was in
at the time of the lot being knocked down to the buyer.
In the event of cancellation the buyer shall not be entitled to
claim payment of interest on the purchase price nor shall the
buyer be entitled to claim compensation for any other expenses
or loss incurred, including any possible loss of profit in connection with reselling.
It shall not be possible to state cancellation of a purchase in
pursuance of the above provisions if:
a the catalogue description on the day the lot was knocked
down to the buyer was in accordance with the then generally
accepted opinion of scholars and experts;
b the only way of establishing whether the lot was a forgery
at the time of the publication of the catalogue was the
implementation of scientific processes, the validity of which
was only acknowledged after the time of publication of the
catalogue, or which would have required a disproportionate
amount of cost, or which would have been impossible to carry out without damaging the lot in question.

COMMISSION
Bruun Rasmussen undertakes to execute commission bids for
bidders who are unable to be present at the auction. It is a
prerequisite that Bruun Rasmussen receives the commission
24 hours before the start of the auction for the bidders’ credit
to be checked, if necessary. Bruun Rasmussen is not to be held
responsible for any errors that may occur using this service.
CONDITION REPORTS
Bruun Rasmussen undertakes to provide further information
about the state and condition of the lots if possible. This is
regarded as a service for customers who are unable to make a
personal inspection of the lots at the preview. Bruun Rasmussen
stresses that the information given cannot be used as the basis
for complaints; complaints can only be based on the catalogue
text.
Exemption FROM VAT
Buyers shall, according to § 2, pay full VAT on lots marked with
an asterix *.
No Danish VAT is to be paid when VAT registered companies
from other EU countries buy at Bruun Rasmussen and resell
to private buyers, The private buyer then only has to pay VAT
according to the rules in force in the country where the foreign
company is VAT registered. For further information please consult your local authorities.
The above is an English translation of the Danish version of the Conditions of Purchase. In case of dispute, only the Danish version of the present Conditions of Purchase of Bruun Rasmussen is valid.

i hammerslag.
ninger.
Angiv katalognummer.
Angiv beløbet De ønsker at byde.
“Max” i kolonnen.
auktionens start.
telefon 3343 6908.

It is possible to leave commission bids if you can not be
present at the auction yourself. This service is free of
charge.
When leaving a commission bid, you are instructing our
customer service to bid up to a specified amount on your
behalf.
The situation can occur that another buyer has already
bid the same as you were prepared to. Are you then willing to bid further? If not the lot will be sold to another
buyer.
If you do not wish to exceed your bid then write “Max",
for maximum, next to the amount. You can also allow us
to raise your bid by approx. 15% or approx 25%.
The hammer price may be higher or lower than the estima
ted price, so it is possible to buy below the estimate.
Bruun Rasmussen will always buy at the lowest price possible, as if you yourself had been present at the auction.
All commission bids are strictly confidential.
Commission bids must be submitted no later than 24
hours prior to the start of the auction.
How to make a commission bid:
Complete the commission form with all pertinent
information.
Indicate the lot number.
Indicate the amount you are prepared to bid.
Should this amount be the absolute maximum, please
write “Max” in the appropriate column.
You can also allow us to bid by up to approx. 15% or
approx. 25% more by indicating so.
Sign the commission form and make sure that Bruun Ras
mussen receives it 24 hours prior to the start of the auction.
If the information should be insufficient, Bruun Rasmussen can abstain from bidding. Bruun Rasmussen can not
be held responsible for error in bidding or failure to execute bids.
After the auction Bruun Rasmussen’s 24-hour “hammerprice-information” is available for sale results at
