How to Survive in the Jungle
Last week in our series 'Life in the Jungle'
we looked at some of the most fascinating
jungles in the world. In this week's article,
we're looking at how to survive in the
jungle. Alana Harris gives us some ideas.
When you're in the jungle, you need to
leave all your luxuries at home! That
means, forget your mobile phone, your
favourite coffee, your chocolate bars, and
your CD player. When you're in the
jungle, you need only four things – water,
food, shelter, and fire. You can find all of
these easily, but you must know what to
look for.
Let's start with water. Even if there's a lot of water in most tropical environments, you won’t
find it immediately. One way to discover it is to follow animals and birds, because they
need liquids regularly. Insects can also be a good indicator, because they usually build
their nests1 near water. However, don't only look for rivers. You can also find water in
plants like vines and palm trees.
You can usually find a lot of food in the jungle, but you must be happy to eat different
things, for example, insects. However, you need to know the difference between those you
can eat and those that are poisonous, so start reading about them now! For cooking and
for warmth, collect dry firewood, leaves, and grass. Then make a fire using dry sticks2 – or
take a box of matches with you!
The type of shelter you need depends on the weather and the kind of animals that are in
the jungle. Malaria-carrying mosquitoes and other insects can be very dangerous, so
protect yourself against bites3. If you don't have any anti-insect product, try putting mud4
on your skin.
Of course, if you're lost in the jungle, you'll want to get home again. The sun and stars can
help you find your way, so maybe you should study astronomy. Alternatively, when you
find a river, follow it. People usually live near rivers, so if you walk along the river, you'll
find a village.

PART C : Read the text and circle the best answer.
A missing cat
The owner of a missing cat is asking for help. “My baby has been missing for over a month
now and I want him back so badly” said Mrs Brown, a 56-year old woman. Mrs Brown lives
by herself in a trailer5 park near Clovis. She said that Clyde, her seven year old cat, didn’t
come home for dinner more than a month ago. The next morning, he didn’t appear for
breakfast either. After Clyde missed an extra-special lunch, she called the police.
When the police asked her to describe Clyde, she told them that Clyde had beautiful green
eyes, had all his teeth but was missing half of his left ear, was seven years old and
completely white. She then told the officer that Clyde was about thirty centimetres high. A
bell went off in the officer’s head. “Is Clyde your child or your pet?” the officer suspiciously
asked. “Well, he’s my cat, of course” Mrs Brown replied. “Lady, you’re supposed to report
missing persons, not missing cats!” said the irritated policeman. “Well, who can I report
this to?” she asked. “You can’t. You have to ask around your neighbourhood or put up
flyers” replied the officer.
Mrs Brown figured that a billboard6 would work a lot better than a piece of paper on a
telephone pole. There was an empty billboard at the end of the street just off the highway.
The billboard had a phone number on it. She called that number and they told her they
could show a picture of Clyde from Mrs Brown’s family album and put it on the billboard for
all to see.
“But how can people see it when they drive by so fast on the highway?” she asked. “Oh,
don’t worry, Madam, they only drive by fast between 2 am and 5:30 am. The rest of the
day, the highway is so full of commuters7 that no one moves”. They told her it would only
cost $ 3,000 a month. So she took most of the money out of her savings account and
rented the billboard for a month.
The month has passed but Clyde has not appeared. Because she has almost no money in
savings, Mrs Brown called the local newspaper to see if anyone could help her rent the
billboard for just one more month. She is waiting but, so far, no one has stepped forward.
