Canadian Sicard SnowBlowers and Trucks By Leandre Landry Opening streets and roads after a snow storm was a difficult task in the early days of trucking. This was particularly true in my native Canada, which often gets its full share of the white stuff. Some roads stayed closed for days. This bothered a young milkman in a suburb of Montreal who dreamed of a better way to clear the roads. His name was Arthur Sicard. Sicard made many experiments but all were unsuccessful. Then one summer he saw a threshing machine at work for the first time and had an idea. He left the dairy, went to work in the construction industry, saved his money and built a small shop. In the winter of 1925-26 he completed his first snowblower. The First Sicard SnowBlower wos built on FWD chassis in 1926. The first Sicard built chassis had a short hood, and a blade at midship. In 1938 the first Sicard-built chassis was introduced and the company began rapid expansion. During the '40s Sicard snowblowers were sold in Canada, the USA, Great Britain, and the USSR. A branch was established in Water-town, NY to better serve the U.S. market, and by 1946 a total of 250 units were in cervice. Mr. Sicard died in 1906 and the next year the company was purchased by Simard of Sorel, Quebec, and Schneider of Paris. Soon the product line was diversified to include street sprinklers, highway maintenance vehicles, trash trucks, and crane carriers. Meanwhile the snowblowers were continued and vastly improved. The first Sicard conventional trucks and truck tractors appeared in 1958. They were diesel powered, available in both two and three axle models, and continuously improved with such modern features as fiberglass hoods and fenders. Sicard also had a license to build KW-Dart off-highway trucks for the construction market in Canada. In the early '60s the company was doing well. But the end was to come in the not too distant future. Paccar bought the company in 1967 and three years later discontinued Sicard production in favor of Kenworth trucks. Fortunately SMI Snowmastcr Ltd. of Ste. Foy, Quebec acquired marketing and manufacturing rights for the snowblowers as well as production facilities in Montreal, QU; Bathurst, NB; and Watertown, NY. Sadly another Canadian truck manufacturer was gone, but the Sicard "Snowmaster" lives on. At the beginning, the equipment was installed on FWD 4X4 trucks . Sicard had their own 4X4 trucks by 1938 . These trucks were bought mostly by towns and were used for snow removal during winter and converted to refuse collecting, streets cleaning and other municipal jobs for the rest of the year. During World War II Sicard snow removal equipment found their way to major airports all over North America making Sicard name known outside Quebec. By the middle of the fifties , a decision was made to expand outside their traditional market and to build road trucks. A new factory was built for this purpose in Ste-Therese while the snow removal equipment was still being built in Montreal. But these trucks were not really popular and I have been told than just a few hundred where built every year. Not more than 2500 were built in the entire history of the company. So in their search to make a better use of their factory, they made an agreement with Dart trucks to built Dart off- road heavy truck to be used by the iron ore mines being developped in Labador and Northern Quebec at this time. We have to remember that Dart have been bought by Paccar about this time and after the acquisition, Dart trucks became KW-DART . The trucks built by Sicard had also the Sicard badge added. In spite of that, the big Ste-Th?r?se factory was under used. Sicard engineers have started to work with Kenworth men on a medium duty truck , the Hustler to be built in Ste-Th?r?se. About this time, the Kenworth trucks were growing in popularity in eastern USA and Canada and Paccar was looking for factory space. So they just bought the place in 1967. I think that they have stopped building Sicard trucks soon after that. The plant have been converted to built Kenworth trucks , beginning by the Hustler and the K-100 , for the eastern markets. The snow removal division have been sold later. Arthur Sicard 1876–1946 (Canada Post, 1995) inventor, born on a farm in Saint- Léonard-de-Port-Maurice, Québec on December 17, 1876; died in Montreal, Quebec, September 13, 1946. In the late 1800s, when Sicard got tired of having his milk spoil when the roads to market were frequently blocked by snow drifts, he experimented with scrapers and V-shaped plows attached to cars; 1894 his idea for a snowblower was sparked by a farm threshing machine, which consisted of revolving metal "worms" and a fan which blew chopped-up straw up a pipe into a strawstack; left farming for the construction business, putting his idea on hold until 20 years later when he had enough cash to return to his idea; 1924 put $40,000 into his first hand-built blower with stronger gasoline engines on the market, and tested it on the streets of Montreal; 1925 March 21 patented the "Sicard Snow Remover Snowblower" and founded Sicard Industries Ltd. in Sainte- Thérèse, Québec; 1927 sold his first snowblowers to the town of Outremont, Montreal, for $13,000 each. Sicard's machine was the first practical self propelled rotary snow blower, with a four wheel drive truck chassis and truck motor, another motor to drive the snow blower head, and a snow blower head with two adjustable chutes; the operator could throw soft, hard, or packed snow over ninety feet away from the snow blower truck or directly into the back of a truck. He sold machines to the Quebec department of highways, the city of Montreal and the St. Hubert airport and eventually his workforce increased to 160 as production jumped to 56 units a year. The Sicard company is now a division of Sicard SSI Group Inc. of Knowlton, Quebec and SMI-Snowblast, Inc. of Watertown, New York. Sicard supplies a complete line of industrial snow blowers, runway sweepers, and other related products ( plows, spreaders, etc. ) for airports, municipalities, and military bases worldwide. Next came Arthur Sicard, a Canadian inventor who was inspired by a grain thresher in 1894 and began working on his first snowblower soon after. His motivation was to help farmers who needed an easy way to clear snow off their fields so their cows could feed. Surprisingly, it took him 31 years to get the design right. In 1925 he unveiled his machine in Montreal, and started taking orders on his aptly-named “Sicard Snow Remover Snowblower”. What did the first mobile snowblower look like? It was basically a truck with a scooper and a snow thrower chute, with a separate motor to propel the snow. The truck was used to throw snow 90 feet away, or the snow could be put in the back of the truck and taken away. The mobility of using a truck instead of a train made the s now remover popular; however they were much too expensive for all but large cities. 1968 R1200A “SnoBlaster” - This twin-engined behemoth features a Cummins 160 diesel front engine that drives the machine and a Cummins 165 diesel rear engine that drives the blower. This truly extraordinary piece of equipment will move mountains of snow in a short time. It formerly served at a Maine airport. 1968 Sicard Jr. Snow Master - Another twin-engine snow blower, the front engine is a 6-cylinder Chrysler industrial flathead gasoline engine that powers the drive wheels, while a Cummins 250 diesel rear engine runs the auger. 1970 Walter Snow Fighter - This former highway plow is powered by a 300-horsepower GV53 Detroit Diesel engine. An Allison automatic transmission powers all wheels. It features an 11' front plow, two 10' wing blades, and a belly plow. An integral sander diversifies the machine's capability. 1973 Sno Go Bombardier Sidewalk Plow - This Canadian-made tracked vehicle is driven by a 6-cylinder Chrysler flathead industrial gas engine. Another one which has seen it's original cabin removed for a better view. Pictured at the public works garage in the city of Beauport, thi s 1952 Senior represents one of the very few Sicards that are still in service in the snowblower fleet of Quebec city. Acquired with the amalgamation of the town of Beauport in Most of the Senior snowblowers have january 2002, thi s snowblower has also the received some modifications over the distinction of being the oldest one of the e ntire years by one of their owners. Another one that had it's serial number removed I could certainly not ask for a better background replaced by one which is usually found on some Ford truck serie s. We must say that thi s idea of putting existing components i s better than create an expensive cabin from scratch e specially for thi s truck. As thi s cabin is spacious and high, I would say thi s a winning combination. Even the old Sicard inscription was pre served and installed on the newer cabin... Can you see it? Il fut posé durant l'hiver 2004-2005 à Québec. along with the original cabin. This is hard to establi sh the approximate year of built for thi s vehicle. There is thi s tool box behind the rear engine, which is typical from those snowblowers built from 1960 and up, while the engine housing has the BUDA name on it, which depicts the 1950 era. More confusing, the actual owner has marked thi s unit with a fleet number indicating this unit i s a 1980... So, I'm only guessing for thi s one!!! It has been photographed in 2004. behind this Senior snowblower for the picture. It is right in downtown Quebec city that I made this photo, where we usually don't get all those trees. I had to get some picture s fa st, a s the snowblower was stopping only for a minute or two, waiting for a truck to come back and be reloaded again with snow. Unfortunately, I have no datas concerning thi s unit, except that this particular cabin was installed in 1990 and the vehicle, owned by a contractor, could possibly be a 1962. This i s another one that I've tried to photograph many times without having many obstacle s around it. I had to be patient before being able to obtain this photograph. Unfortunately, the place where it is located never allows a good picture with the sun on the good side, but hey, I finally have it all alone for my collection. From my evaluation, I would say that thi s model is dating from the 1960-1970 era. It still has it's original three sections loading chute, which is my prefered model. It has been posed during the 2005 sea son. Here is a Senior that is for shure one of the oldest Photographed in the region of Campbellford, to be in operation as of today. It's not every day that we can see a Senior which has been fully refurbished and looks like it just came out from the Sicard factory. This snowblower, a 1953 edition, was also shot in the city of Campbellford, Ontario. Originating also from the Vancouver international airport, it has the International RD501 6 cylinder gas engine for the truck and a Detroit 12V71 diesel engine on the back. This vehicle has an automatic transmi ssion (possibl y MT41). Very few models had those automatic transmi ssi ons originally, most of them at the end of the 1960's. Just next to thi s one is a 1957 Junior, which you can see on the Junior page. This one was spotted in the city of Montmagny during winter 2005. But at that time, it was impossi ble to take some picture s of it, as the truck was parked between other vehicles. Interestingly, thi s vehicle still has it's original engines. Those are a 6 cylinder Hercules RXC gaz engine, rated at 122 HP for the truck and a good old BUDA 8DC1125 diesel with 220 HP for the blower. Let's hope this one will find a new owner and will not be scrapped. As you might suppose, the original engines have been replaced. An International 401 was the choice for the truck a s well as a Cummins 335 for the blower. It belongs to a hospital which use it for clearing all it's parking lots. It's unusual these days to see a scene like this, as most of thi s duty i s now performed by private companies under contracts. But that was not all: I've also had the chance to hear again the sound of a 50 year old engine. Believe it or not, the original Hercules RXC ga s engine was still under the cabin... On the back of the truck, the blower engine has been replaced by what seems to be a Cummins NTC335, if I trust my ears... The particular sound of the NTC335 is one of my favorite !!! de la remettre sur la route... constater qu'il existait des amateurs de souffleuses Sicard. Because of the photos I took, the driver asked me if I was representing some kind of company involved in snowblower refurbi shing... I just said no, I'm only involved in picturing those snow monsters !!! Bien d'autres à venir bientôt!!! - More to come soon!!!
