Race-in-Review: Martti Vainio (FIN) set the pace from the 5000-meter mark, taking over from early leaders
Nick Rose (GBR) and Musa Gouda (SUD). Vainio and Alberto Cova (ITA) were at the front by themselves for
the final half of the event. With less than 200 meters to go, Cova unleased a furious kick which brought him a
3.5 second victory over Vainio. Mike McLeod (GBR) and Mike Musyoki (KEN) staged a stirring battle down the
stretch for third place with McLeod a victor by .24 seconds. Vainio was subsequently disqualified for having
a positive drug test and McLeod and Musyoki were moved up to second and third places, respectively.
Compte rendu: Martti Vainio (FIN) imposait le rythme à partir de 5000 m, remplaçant Nick Rose (GBR) et Musa
Gouda (SUD) qui avaient mené jusque-là. Vainio et Alberto Cova (ITA) étaient seuls en tête durant toute la 2e
partie de l’ épreuve. Avec moins de 200m à courir, Cova se détachait irrésistiblement pour gagner avec 3,5
secondes d’ avance sur Vainio. Mike McLeod (GBR) et Mike Musyoki (KEN) se livraient une violente bataille
depuis I’ avant-dernière ligne droite pour la 3e place que McLeod remportait avec 24/100e de seconde
d’ avance. Parla suite, Vainio était disqualifié à cause d'un test de contrôle de dopage positif et McLeod et
Musyoki avançaient respectivement aux seconde et 3e places.

Race-in-Review: A large pack at the front began to disintegrate at the 30 km mark as the medal possibilities
diminished to Charlie Spedding (GBR) and seven others who were within two seconds of him. Carlos Lopes
(POR) made a decisive surge at the 37 km mark, leaving Spedding and John Treacy (IRL) in his wake. Lopes
margin at the finish was 35 seconds as Treacy outbattled Spedding by two seconds for the silver medal.
Compte rendu: Un peloton d’ avant-garde assez nombreux commençait de se désintégrer aux 30 km alors
que les possibilités de médailles se concentraient sur Charlie Spedding (GBR) et sept autres coureurs qui le
suivaient à 2 secondes. Carlos Lopes (POR) produisait un effort decisif aux 37 km laissant Spedding et John
Treacy (IRL) dans son sillage. L’ avance de Lopes à I’ arrivée était de 35 secondes, alors que Treacy battait
Spedding de 2 secondes pour la médaille d’ argent.
