The Power of Culture to Unite
Welcome to the 22nd edition of the European Film Festival, Lebanon's yearly encounter
with European cinema. For more than two decades, the Delegation of the European Union,
in close collaboration with the EU Member States, has strived to present to Lebanese
audiences this cultural event - an unmissable entry in Lebanon's cultural agenda. Over the
period of the Festival, film lovers will unwrap, once again, the myriads of emotions, places,
human dynamics and narratives of the European cinema. The world they will rediscover
is not merely a world of artistic endeavours, but also a world of an often familiar sense
of diversity - a world where human emotions, fear, joy, aspirations, dreams, despair,
difficulties and triumph are as universal as humanity itself.
Our times are times of many challenges on a global scale. The last years have shown us
that insecurity, extremism and intolerance are issues that are common to us all. We are all
in it together and facing these challenges is everyone's responsibility. More than ever, this
Festival is a testimony to the power of culture to unite, to strengthen the bonds of dialogue,
understanding and tolerance, and to push away the forces of radicalisation. The 36 films
that will be shown will carry with them this power. They will offer you a reflection of the
diversity and the complexities of our own real world.
The Festival will also make you laugh, with 4 vintage films on the special theme of
"European Comedy". It will remind you of a certain golden age with the screening of
"Lawrence of Arabia" in tribute to Omar Sharif. It will let you delve into the world of
Shakespeare's literary genius as we celebrate the 400th anniversary of his death with the
screening of "Taming of the Shrew".
A cine-concert with the restored version of Alfred Hitchcock's "Blackmail" will be
presented, and the Festival will close with the Lebanese production "3000 Nights."
The Festival's programme will also introduce you to young Lebanese talents by screening
short films created by graduates of 12 audiovisual schools in Lebanon, and an award will
be granted to the Best Short Film. A selection of films will also be screened in Saida, Tyre,
Nabatieh, Tripoli, Jounieh, Zahle and Deir el Qamar.
A special screening of "Trashed", a documentary on waste pollution, will be presented
during the Festival. It will be followed by a discussion on the topic of waste management
in Lebanon and on the European Union's efforts to help the country in effectively tackling
this most pressing issue.
The European Union and Lebanon have demonstrated over the years that, despite the
global challenges and despite national and international crises, our partnership continues
to move forward. The European Film Festival is a manifestation of this strong partnership
and of the power of culture to bring us closer together in more ways than one.

Rocco veut devenir quelqu’un et faire quelque chose

dans la musique et l’amour, et écoute les battements
de son coeur pour réaliser son rêve.
Italy 1948. 10-year-old Rocco is growing up in a
gorgeous mountain hamlet in Calabria, until one day,
his father Salvatore decides to seek a better future for
his family. The greyish mining landscapes of Limburg,
icy winters, a foreign language and culture all put a
damper on the little Rocco’s happiness. But still Rocco
wants to become someone and have a purpose in
life. Against his father’s wish and better judgment,
he seeks an escape through music and love. Rocco

Set in the late 1800s, the story follows 16-year-old

two team up as they face the harsh environment

Le soldat allemand Jesper s'engage pour une
mission en Afghanistan. Jesper et son équipe sont

them both as a rescue team.

10-year-old Jack is responsible for himself and his
little brother Manuel. Their single mother works
during the day and often goes out at night. One
day, Manuel burns himself with boiling water and
Jack is blamed for the incident. It's reason enough
for social services to put him in a home where he
is dreadfully homesick. He soon gets into trouble
and bolts, heading for home. He arrives back, only
to find his mother is once again absent. Jack and
Manuel roam the city in search of her.

Fonceur, tenace et plein de ressources, Jack,
10 ans à peine, est déjà seul responsable de
sa famille : son petit frère Manuel et leur mère
célibataire aimante, mais totalement immature, qui
travaille la journée et fait la fête la nuit. Mais cet
homme de la maison en culottes courtes n’est pas
infaillible et un événement va venir bouleverser
le quotidien de ce trio. Les services de protection
de l’enfance décident alors de retirer la garde des
deux garçons à la jeune femme et de placer Jack
dans un centre d’hébergement.

L’histoire de Jota et Simón, deux jeunes voyous de
20 ans qui, chaque jour, tentent de survivre dans la
rue. Au-delà des aventures quotidiennes, quelque
chose bout en eux. Chacun d'eux désire ardemment
cela même qu’il n’a pas. Simón veut être libre ; il en
a assez de vivre avec sa grande famille de forains,
sa femme et son enfant. Jota, lui, ne veut plus être
seul : il aspire à faire son nid et fonder une famille.
En attendant, chaque fois qu'ils se voient, les deux
jeunes hommes jouent les "Robin des bois" et
vivent comme s’ils n’avaient rien à perdre.
The story of Jota and Simon, two young hustlers
who hit the streets every day to find ways to make
ends meet. But beyond their everyday adventures,
something is amiss inside both of them. Each
desires something neither has. Simon wants
freedom. He is tired of living with his own family,
including a wife and son. Jota is fed up with being
alone and desperately wants a family. Meanwhile,
every time they meet, they feel like Robin Hoods
and think they have nothing to lose.

l'histoire touchante d’une nouvelle découverte, de

Fred et Mick, deux vieux amis approchant les
quatre-vingts ans, profitent de leurs vacances dans
un bel hôtel au pied des Alpes. Fred, compositeur et

abandonnée depuis longtemps, tandis que Mick, réalisateur, travaille toujours, s’empressant de terminer

Erika a tout : un bon travail, beaucoup d’amis

Dans l’idyllique Engadine, Ursli donne un coup de main à ses parents qui
travaillent dur à l’alpage. Une profonde amitié le lie à Seraina, qui passe
l’été dans le mayen voisin. A la désalpe, une partie de la récolte est perdue
et contraint la famille de Ursli à s’endetter auprès du riche épicier du
village. Devant céder Zila son chevreau à Roman, le fils de l'épicier, Ursli
voit son petit monde s’effondrer. Mais quand en plus on veut lui donner
la plus petite clochette pour le défilé de la Chalandamarz, Ursli s’engage
dans une aventure téméraire pour récupérer la grosse cloche de vache
accrochée au mayen.
In the idyllic Engadine, Ursli is helping his parents who work hard in the
pasture. He became very good friends with Seraina, who was spending
the summer in the neighbouring mayen. At the end of the Alpabzug, part
of the harvest is lost which forces Ursli’s family to borrow money from the
village’s rich grocer. Having to give his young goat
Zila to Roman, the grocer's son, Ursli sees his
small world falling apart. But when they decide to
give him the smallest bell for the Chalandamarz
parade, Ursli goes on a reckless adventure to
recover the big cow bell attached to the mayen.

criminals. The prison director pressures her to spy on
the Palestinian inmates. While in prison, Layal gives
birth to a baby boy. Against all odds, she manages
to find a meaning to her life. As prison conditions
deteriorate and the Palestinian prisoners decide to go
on strike, Layal is forced to make a choice that will

Sa rencontre avec Amadeo débouchera sur son
mariage avec Carmen. De par son travail, Amadeo
possède un logement subventionné qu’il est sur le
point de perdre, car il va partir à la retraite. Pour
le conserver, il va tenter de convaincre son gendre
d’accepter le poste de bourreau ainsi laissé vacant.
Carmen is the daughter of Amadeo, the
executioner of the Court of Madrid. All her
boyfriends leave her when they learn about her

and runs away. Frank is put in charge of the
investigation.
L’artiste libanais Sary Moussa, alias Radiokvm, est un musicien d’électronique
autodidacte. Moussa a grandi en écoutant du jazz et du rock, avant de se plonger dans
l'électronica et commencer, à partir de 2008, à composer ses propres mélodies sous
le nom de Radiokvm. Il a collaboré avec les électroniciens libanais OkyDoky et Munma,
entre autres, et sorti des remixes et compositions originales pour différents labels. Il a
composé la musique pour plusieurs performances de théâtre et de danse, ainsi que des
bandes-son pour des courts-métrages. Le premier album vinyle de Radiokvm, intitulé
"Issrar", a été produit par le label indépendant libanais Ruptured en octobre 2014.

Lebanese artist Sary Moussa, aka Radiokvm, is a self-taught electronic musician.
Moussa grew up listening to jazz and rock, before diving into electronica and in 2008
he began to craft his own melodies under the moniker Radiokvm. He has collaborated
with Lebanese electronic producers OkyDoky and Munma, among others, and has
released remixes and original compositions for various labels. He has composed
music for several theatre and dance performances, as well as soundtracks for short
films. “Issrar”, Radiokvm’s first full-length vinyl album, was released by Lebanese
independent label Ruptured in October 2014.

Depuis 2004, la gestion des déchets solides est un secteur
important de l'intervention de l'Union européenne au Liban,
qui a alloué plus de 77 millions € pour financer des solutions
pour la gestion des déchets solides. Les projets en cours
et futurs financés par l'UE soutiennent la construction de
plusieurs installations de traitement des déchets solides
à travers le pays, la création de centres d'enfouissement
techniques et l'extension de ceux existants, ainsi que la
fourniture d'équipements tels que des conteneurs, des
camions et des centres de stérilisation.
Since 2004, solid waste management has been an
important sector of intervention by the European Union
in Lebanon, which has allocated more than €77 million to
finance solid waste management solutions. On-going and
future projects financed by the EU support the construction
of several solid waste treatment facilities across the
country, the creation of sanitary landfills and the extension
of existing ones, as well as the supply of equipment such
as containers, trucks and sterilisation centres.

Grâce à ce soutien de l'UE, 540 municipalités seront assistées
dans la mise en œuvre de politiques efficaces de gestion des
déchets, plus de 600 emplois seront créés au profit des
communautés locales, et une capacité totale de traitement
de 2.395 tonnes par jour sera atteinte, représentant plus de
43% des déchets solides produits au Liban.
Through this EU support, a total of 540 municipalities
will be assisted in implementing effective solid waste
management policies, more than 600 jobs will be
created for the benefit of the local communities, and a
total treatment capacity of 2,395 tonnes per day will
be reached representing more than 43% of solid waste
generated in Lebanon.
L'assistance de l'UE dans le domaine de la gestion des déchets
solides au Liban vise à soutenir la planification stratégique à
court et à long terme du Gouvernement libanais sur les déchets
solides, ainsi que les plans stratégiques et opérationnels
municipaux. Elle vise également à travailler de manière proactive
avec les organisations de la société civile, et avec les secteurs
public et privé sur la mise en œuvre efficace des politiques de

EU assistance in the field of solid waste management in
Lebanon is targeted towards supporting the Lebanese
Government's short and long-term strategic planning
on solid waste, as well as municipal strategic and
operational plans. It also seeks to proactively engage
with civil society organisations, and with the public
and private sectors on the effective implementation of
solid waste management policies. This EU assistance
also calls for a careful scrutiny of governance and
environmental rule of law.

à temps, elle s’échappe de l'orphelinat où elle
vit. Elle emmène avec elle Kordula, l'éducatrice
nouvellement embauchée. Alors que la police se
lance à leurs trousses, elles évitent les routes
principales et rencontrent des personnages

Maszenka wants to be a ballet dancer. The first
stage on her road to fulfilling her dream is the
entrance exam to the ballet school in Gdansk.
To make it there in time, she escapes from the
orphanage where she lives, taking with her the
newly hired educator Kordula. With the police on
their trail, they avoid main roads and encounter a
number of interesting characters who help the girl

Prix du meilleur court métrage libanais
Le Festival du Cinéma européen poursuit son initiative en direction des jeunes talents.
Comme les années précédentes, le comité du Festival organisera un concours du meilleur
court métrage libanais. Le Festival offrira aux gagnants la possibilité d'assister à des
festivals européens. Des responsables culturels des Ambassades des pays membres de
l’Union europénne et des critiques de cinéma libanais composent le jury de ce concours.
Cette initiative répond à une double volonté du Festival : encourager les jeunes réalisateurs
libanais et inciter le public à tourner son regard vers une nouvelle génération de cinéastes.
Des courts métrages réalisés par des diplômés de douze écoles audiovisuelles du Liban
seront projetés lors du Festival.
Comiques, dramatiques, sarcastiques ou réalistes, nous vous invitons à les apprécier.

En même temps qu'elle étudie, une fille de 20 ans, idéaliste, prépare la fête d’enterrement de vie de
célibataire de son frère. Fatiguée, elle souffre d'une crise d'angoisse. Ses parents se rappellent alors
qu’elle avait eu une crise similaire quand elle était beaucoup plus jeune. A l'approche de la fête, elle
décide de travailler sur elle-même et de recommencer à zéro.
Un couple de jeunes mariés (Adam et June) reçoit un appareil photo robotisé (Bemo) comme cadeau
de mariage tardif pour saisir leurs précieux moments. Le robot, qui est censé capter des photos et
vidéos sur commande, commence à enregistrer toute leur vie à leur insu. Avec le temps, Adam et
June réalisent qu’ils recherchent des choses différentes dans la vie.
A 20-year-old idealist girl is preparing her brother’s bachelor party during her studies.
Overwhelmed, she suffers from an anxiety attack. Her parents are reminded of a similar attack that
she suffered when was much younger. In the light of the bachelor party, she decides to work on
herself and start anew.
In a nearby future, a newlywed couple (Adam and June), receive a camera robot (Bemo) as a late
wedding gift to capture their precious moments. The robot, which is supposed to capture photos
and videos on demand, starts recording their entire life without them knowing. As time passes, the
couple realise they want different things in life.

Sheehan is a Bangladeshi man living in Lebanon, working as a garbage collector. Despite that he is
facing so many annoying actions by people around him, he still does his job with love and passion.
A man and a woman cross paths again after 10 years. Leila flourished and is now a reputable
dancer/artist while Cyril is still stuck where he was. One conversation leads to another and
memories are brought back to life.
