Scientific Editor, John M. Last
Dr. John Last has been admitted recently as an Officer of the Order
of Canada in recognition of lifetime service in epidemiology and
other public health sciences.
John Last is emeritus professor of epidemiology at the University of Ottawa. Born and educated in Australia, he graduated from
the University of Adelaide medical school in 1949. After 5 years of
hospital training, 5 years in general practice, and intercontinental
voyages as a ship’s surgeon, he trained in epidemiology and public
health at the University of Sydney and as visiting fellow in the MRC
Social Medicine Research Unit in London. He has held academic
positions at the Universities of Sydney, Australia, Vermont USA,
and Edinburgh, Scotland and has been professor of epidemiology
and community medicine at the University of Ottawa since 1969.
He is the author or editor of 17 books, chapters in 51 books, articles in several encyclopedias, 80 original articles in peer-reviewed
journals, over 200 other articles and editorials, and numerous
reports and official documents for the World Health Organization,
the Governments of Canada and Ontario and other official agencies.
Dr. Last is the author of Public Health and Human Ecology (1987,
1996) and a Dictionary of Public Health (2006). He edited four editions of Public Health and Preventive Medicine (1980, 1986, 1991,
1998), eponymously known as “Maxcy-Rosenau-Last”; four editions of the Dictionary of Epidemiology (1983, 1988, 1995, 2001); he
co-edited the Oxford Illustrated Companion to Medicine, 3rd edition
(2001) and the Encyclopedia of Public Health (2002). He is contributing editor on public health sciences and practice for Stedman’s
Medical Dictionary (1990, 1995, 2000, 2005) and the New Oxford
American Dictionary (2001). Dr. Last was the scientific editor of the
Canadian Journal of Public Health, 1981-1991, editor of the Annals of
the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, 1990-1998,
and interim editor of the American Journal of Preventive Medicine in
1988-89. The Dictionary of Epidemiology has been translated into

French, Spanish, Portuguese, Chinese, Japanese, Arabic, Farsi (Iranian), Serbian, Slovakian, Russian and Ukrainian, and is used by epidemiologists throughout the world. Dr. Last led the initiative of the
International Epidemiological Association to develop guidelines on
ethical conduct of epidemiological research, practice, and teaching, was a member of the Working Group of the Council for International Organizations of Medical Sciences that drafted
International Guidelines for Ethical Review of Epidemiological
Studies (1991) and has contributed substantially to other national
and international discussions about ethical conduct in public
health sciences and practice.
In addition to being the recipient in 2006 of CPHA’s highest honour, the R.D. Defries Medal, Dr. Last’s honours include MD Honoris Causa of Uppsala University, Sweden, 1993, and MD Honoris
Causa of Edinburgh University, Scotland, 2003. He was Wade
Hampton Frost lecturer, Epidemiology Section, American Public
Health Association in 1989; Scholar in Residence, Rockefeller Foundation’s Villa Serbelloni Study and Conference Center, Bellagio,
Italy, in 1992. His ”lifetime achievement” awards include the
Duncan Clark Award of the Association of Teachers of Preventive
Medicine in 1994, and the Abraham Lilienfeld Award of the
American College of Epidemiology in 1997. He is an honorary life
member of the International Epidemiological Association, the
American College of Epidemiology, the American Public Health
Association, the UK Society for Social Medicine, the Royal
Australasian College of Physicians and the British Medical Association.

Le docteur John Last est nommé officier de l’Ordre du Canada en
reconnaissance de l’œuvre de sa vie en épidémiologie et dans
d’autres sciences de la santé publique.
Dr Last est professeur émérite d’épidémiologie à l’Université
d’Ottawa. Né en Australie, où il a fait ses études, il a obtenu son
diplôme de la faculté de médecine de l’Université d’Adélaïde en
1949. Après cinq années de formation en milieu hospitalier, cinq
autres en médecine générale et plusieurs voyages intercontinentaux
à titre de médecin de marine, il a suivi une formation en épidémiologie et en santé publique à l’Université de Sydney et est devenu
agrégé de recherches invité au MRC Social Medicine Research Unit
de Londres, en Angleterre. Il a occupé des postes d’enseignement
dans les universités de Sydney (Australie), du Vermont (États-Unis)
et d’Édimbourg (Écosse) et enseigne l’épidémiologie et la médecine
communautaire à l’Université d’Ottawa depuis 1969.
Dr Last est l’auteur ou le directeur littéraire de 17 livres, de chapitres dans 51 autres livres, d’articles dans plusieurs encyclopédies,
de 80 articles originaux évalués par des pairs, de plus de 200 autres
articles et éditoriaux, ainsi que de nombreux rapports et documents
officiels pour l’Organisation mondiale de la santé, les gouvernements du Canada et de l’Ontario et divers organismes officiels. Il est
l’auteur de l’ouvrage Public Health and Human Ecology (1987, 1996)

et d’un dictionnaire de la santé publique (2006). Il a dirigé quatre
éditions de Public Health and Preventive Medicine (1980, 1986, 1991,
1998), un ouvrage habituellement désigné par le nom de ses auteurs
(« Maxcy-Rosenau-Last »), et quatre éditions du Dictionnaire d’épidémiologie (1983, 1988, 1995, 2001). Il a codirigé la 3e édition du
Oxford Illustrated Companion to Medicine (2001) et l’Encyclopedia of
Public Health (2002). Il a collaboré à la rédaction des articles sur la

traduit en français, en espagnol, en portugais, en chinois, en japonais, en arabe, en persan, en serbe, en slovaque, en russe et en ukrainien, et les épidémiologistes du monde entier s’y réfèrent. Dr Last
a dirigé l’élaboration de lignes directrices sur la conduite éthique de
la recherche, de la pratique et de l’enseignement en épidémiologie
(une initiative de l’Association internationale d’épidémiologie), il a
été membre du groupe de travail du Conseil des organisations inter-

nationales des sciences médicales chargé de rédiger les International Guidelines for Ethical Review of Epidemiological Studies (1991), et
il a beaucoup collaboré à d’autres discussions, au Canada et à
l’étranger, sur l’éthique dans la pratique et les sciences de la santé
publique.
En plus d’avoir reçu en 2006 la plus haute distinction de l’ACSP,
la médaille R.D. Defries, Dr Last est titulaire de doctorats en médecine honoris causa de l’Université d’Uppsala en Suède (1993) et de
l’Université d’Édimbourg en Écosse (2003). Il a occupé la chaire
Wade Hampton Frost (section épidémiologie) de l’American Public
Health Association (1989) et été professeur-résident au centre
d’études et de conférences de la Villa Serbelloni de la Rockefeller
Foundation à Bellagio, en Italie (1992). Il a obtenu plusieurs prix de
distinction « pour l’ensemble de son œuvre », dont le Prix Duncan
Clark de l’Association of Teachers of Preventive Medicine (1994), et
le Prix Abraham Lilienfeld de l’American College of Epidemiology
(1997). Il est membre honoraire à vie de l’Association internationale
d’épidémiologie, de l’American College of Epidemiology, de
l’American Public Health Association, de la Society for Social
Medicine du Royaume-Uni, du Royal Australasian College of
Physicians et de la British Medical Association.
