This tense has 3 main
purposes:
•
1)To describe a regular, repeated action in
the past
e.g. I used to walk to school every day
• 2) To describe an uncompleted action in the
past
e.g. I was watching TV when the phone rang
• 3) To set the scene in the past
e.g. The sky was blue, the birds were singing
• Knock off the –are, -ere and -ire from the
infinitive and add the appropriate endings.
• In groups of two/three find the imperfect
tense in the verb table section of the
dictionary.
• Angelo/Monique look for an example of an
–ARE verb
• Natalia/Dan look for an example of an
–ERE verb
• Jess/ Michael/Kadi look for an example of
an –IRE verb
• Write down the infinitive, conjugate the
verb and write the translation
• 1 person from each group will now feed the
information to the rest of the group.
• EXT: all groups need to find a common
irregular verb, conjugate it and translate.

Whereas the perfect tense describes a single
completed action in the past, the imperfect tense...

• is used for descriptions in the past, such as
describing what the weather was like or giving your
opinion of something you did
• tells us what something used to be like
• describes something that went on for a long period
of time
• is used to translate was…ing and were…ing.
