House Wines - Miller Howe
Welcome to the Miller Howe Wine List. Wine is a great passion of mine and I believe the right wine wholly
enhances a good meal. You can often feel intimidated when handed a wine list the size of the Old
Testament. Our list is comprehensive and each wine is individually handpicked. Of course I or one of the
team are always happy to advise.
Working with our suppliers we taste everything before we buy (hic!) and I believe the list is interesting and
eclectic as well as featuring old school classics.

Alsace
Here is the home to France's greatest range of aromatic white wines. Alsace was one of the earliest wine
regions in France to focus solely on quality over quantity. It also pioneered the use and promotion of single
grape varietals, predominantly white and led by the majestic Riesling with a supporting cast which includes
Pinot Gris, Pinot Blanc and Gewurztraminer.

Loire Valley-France
The Loire is France's longest river and probably its most beautiful. With its marginal, northerly climate the Loire
is home to some of the worlds most elegant and racy white wines though it does produce underrated sparkling,
red and rose wine. It has over 87 wine producing areas, the most famous of which probably being Sancerre and
Pouilly Fume which are the spiritual homes of Sauvignon Blanc. There are many other delights such as
Savennieres, Muscadet, Sweet Coteaux du Layon and some delicious underrated reds.

The Rhone Valley
The Rhone was the very gateway by which the Romans brought the vine into France and from there introduced
it across the country. The Rhone is divided into 2 sub regions with distinct vinicultural traditions, the Northern
and Southern Rhone. The Northern sub region produces red wines from the Syrah grape, sometimes blended
with white wine grapes. The white wins produced in the North are made from Marsanne, Rousanne and
Viognier
The South produces an array of red, white and rose wines often blends of several grapes such as in
Chateauneuf du Pape.

Burgundy-France
A patchwork of vineyards cluster around world renowned villages in what, thankfully, remains one of France's
most unspoilt viticultural areas. The spiritual home of the Chardonnay and Pinot Noir grapes. Few regions can
compare to Burgundy for producing dry white and red wines of world class, side by side. Whether you enjoy the
steely, low oak emphasis of Chablis or the weight and texture of a Cote de Beaune we have a broad and very
fine selection of white Burgundy. Equally the reds encapsulate all the hedonistic, yet refined and diverse
elegance of Pinot Noir.

Bordeaux-France
With the exception of Champagne, no other region has built up such an enviable reputation through the
combination of the high quality production and hard PR of just a small number of its top producers.
There are over 40,000 estates yet its only the top 2% which carry the imagery and kudos of the region. We have
worked hard to present you with a selection of classic but affordable wines that combine the best of their
individual regions with many from top vintages at their peak for drinking.

Italy
When thinking of Italy immediate images of rugged beauty, sunburnt terracotta, vast olive groves and an
amazing diversity of wine styles and regions come to mind. This bizarrely shaped country stretches from parallel
with Burgundy in the North to touching North Africa in the South. Between these points there are almost 400
defined wine regions and well over 100 grape varieties to play with. Spectacularly diverse reds are rightly
regarded as universal partners to most savoury and fuller bodied dishes. The white wines of Italy have come on
in leaps and bounds in the last 20 years and are now at the forefront of refreshing drinking allied to new
partners for entree and lighter courses.

Spain
Spain has more land planted under vine than any other country in Europe. The range is diverse and ever
changing. From crisp, tantalisingly fruity, lighter bodied and seafood friendly whites to mighty hedonistic reds.
The reds of Spain are made for matching with bold food flavours. Rioja reigns supreme, though we have
some exiting alternatives to try.

defies convention, with great labelling, funky names and above all Big Attitude.
SOME YOUNG PUNKS
Being media savvy and having a sense of humour allows this ironically quiet spoken but earnest bunch to
market themselves outrageously and bring a fresh approach to labelling.
Col McBryde is not your conventional image of a man with a PHD. His shaved head and full body tattoos
are a long way from the conventional lab geek. But when you realise that Some Young Punks is all about a
punk attitude to winemaking it all starts to make sense. Along with partner Jen Gardner and her family, add
master blender Nik Bourke and creative pop art packaging and you have Some Young Punks. Seriously
good booze with seriously big attitude.
Blends like Sangiovese and Shiraz, Nebblio and Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz and Mataro are typical. The
wines are big, brash and very moreish with whacky names and fantastic labels printed in glorious
PUNKNICOLOUR. My favourite is "Passion has red lips."
ALPHA BOX AND DICE
Alpha box and dice, the alphabet of wines, where all your dreams come true...
Winemaker Justin Lane is a bit of a legend amongst "garage" winemakers for his passionately crafted
wines and loveable rogue vintner ways.
Based in the heart of the McLaren Vale, Justin is sourcing fruit from some of the oldest and best vineyards
and crafting most interesting and unusual blends. Mix that with some extremely creative packaging and you
have got Alpha, Box and Dice.
Indulge in the intriguing "Golden Mullet Fury", a fascinating blend of Chardonnay and Muscadelle that
surprisingly works. Or partake in the alluring "Enigma" pairing Barbera with Cabernet which is a delight of
earthy smoky raspberry. These and many others are available. Do try something different.

Australia
The modern Australian wine industry only really emerged in the 1970's, and today is the 4th largest exporter of
wine with over 60 designated wine producing regions and 2000 producers. The vast majority of these are in the
South East corner, although fine wines are also made around Perth.
Plantings are dominated by Shiraz aka Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay. As ever it's as much about
the producer as the area.

New Zealand
It is remarkable to think that the modern New Zealand wine industry is only about 40 years old. Back in the
seventies the world was captivated by the vibrant and mouth watering flavours they discovered in the new style
Sauvignon Blancs from the Marlborough region. Now these wines are recognised as one of the world's classic
styles.
Top Sauvignons are now more sophisticated than ever, whilst their Pinot Noirs in particular, have attained world
class stature.

South Africa
The Miller Howe wine list has always favoured South African wines with our ex chef and owner John Tovey
listing them in the seventies before most of the UK were aware of them. South Africa has the oldest winemaking
tradition and heritage of any New World country, with the first known vintage being produced in 1659.
Whilst the coolest region is Constantia, the largest and most famous is Stellenbosch, and with over 50 soil types
a complex range of both red and white wines are produced including Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, red
Bordeaux blends, as well as South Africa's ubiquitous white grape Chenin Blanc. I should also mention its own
home grown red grape Pinotage, a true love it or hate it variety. South Africans claim they are a halfway house
between the old and new world in terms of style and structure.

South America
Chile is quite remarkable going from the driest place on earth in the north (the Atacama Desert) to antarctic
glaciers in the south. Its in the main central belt where all the great wine areas are found. 75% of wine produced
is red, dominated by Bordeaux varieties Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Sauvignon Blanc is the most common
white produced.
Argentina has a relatively modern wine history and its only in the last 25 years it has really established a
presence. It is probably the robust red Malbec they are best known for, but they also produce some great crisp
and fruity whites.
