society. Access to justice continues to be an
important social issue for society and the
profession. It is a fundamental principle of our
profession and one that you should seek to uphold.

CALL TO THE BAR
ADMISSION AU BARREAU

he ceremony of Call to the Bar takes place in
two separate procedures. First, the Benchers
of The Law Society of Upper Canada, who are
responsible for the governance of the legal
profession in Ontario, are called to order on the
stage in a Special Convocation by the Treasurer,
who is the head of the Society. The candidates
will be presented by a representative of the
Professional Development, Competence and
Admissions Committee to the Treasurer who will
confer on them the degree of Barrister-at-Law and
call them to the Bar of Ontario. Convocation will
then adj ourn and a Special Session of the Court of
Appeal for Ontario and the Superior Court of
Justice will be convened by the Registrar. The
Chief Justice of Ontario or his designate will
preside over the administering of the Oath of
Allegiance, the Barristers Oath and the Solicitors
Oath, to the newly called members of the Bar. The
Com1 will then adjourn. Upon completion of these
two ceremonies the graduates become Barristers
and Solicitors, authorized to practise law in the
Province of Ontario.

tresorier, qui est chef de la direction du Barreau,
ouvre un Conseil extraordinaire sur l'estrade des
conseillers du Barreau du Haut-Canada, qui sont
responsables de !'administration de la profession
juridique en Ontario. Une representante ou un
representant du Comite du perfectionnement
professionnel, de la competence et des admissions
presente Jes candidats et candidates au tresorier
qui leur remet le dipl6me d'avocat-plaideur ou
d'avocate-plaideuse et Jes rec;oit au barreau de
!'Ontario. La seance du Conseil est alors levee
et le greffier convoque une session extraordinaire
de la Cour d'appel de !'Ontario et de la Cour
superieure de justice. Le juge en chef de !'Ontario,
OU ]a personne qu' i] designe, preside a ]a prestation
du serment d' allegeance, du serment des avocatsplaideurs et de celui des procureurs par Jes
nouveaux membres rec;us au barreau. La seance de
la Cour est alors levee. A !'issue de ces deux
ceremonies, les dipl6mes et dip16mees deviennent
avocats-plaideurs ou avocates-plaideuses et
procureurs OU procureures, et SOnt autorises
a
exercer le droit dans la province de !'Ontario.
