Operating as a family run business in
Guelph for 45 years, Robinson Pontiac,
originally located downtown, was purchased by Howard Robinson in August
1965. Ten years later, the Robinson dealership would be the first automotive
dealership to relocate to its current location on Woodlawn Road, in what has
become known as the Guelph Automall.
An award winning business, Robinson
Pontiac was the proud recipient of the
Triple Crown Award in 2005, a recognition given to the top General Motors
dealers for exceeding customer's expectations in Sales, Service, Parts, and
Accessories. Plus, Howard Robinson
received the Milestone Award for 41
years of dedicated service as a General
Motors dealer.
Through the years the dealership has
grown to include a staff of 48 employees.
In 2007 the business was purchased by
longtime employees, Cindy Robinson,
Howard’s daughter–having worked at
the dealership since 1985; Ted
Kohli–team member since 1974 and
Sales Manager since 1979; along with
Sam Hirani, who has lead the wholesale
division since 1996.
In early 2009, Robinson Pontiac completed $2 million worth of major renovations deemed necessary by GM–
including an expanded showroom, waiting lounge and service bays plus a service
drive-thru for customer's convenience.
Shortly after the renovations were
complete, the owners received a letter
from GM, identifying them as one of the
Canadian dealers whose Sales and
Service agreement would not be
renewed.
GM Canada, at the request of the
Federal and Ontario Governments,
accelerated its restructuring and released
a revised, more aggressive Operating
Plan in April 2009, which included plans
to reduce the number of GM dealerships in Canada by approximately 42%.
A wind down agreement gave the dealerships until December 2009 to close.
“After 42 years of dedication to the
GM brand, my reaction became one of
wanting to protect what my father had
built,” says Cindy Robinson.
Robinson was not alone in her desire
to standup to GM, and 21 dealerships
across Canada joined together to bring a
legal suit against the manufacturer to
overturn their decision.
“It was a very long and emotional time
which took a lot of energy away from
the day to day business,” adds Robinson.
“We had such great support from our
customers, employees and the community.” Customers not only continued to
purchase cars, and service vehicles, many
wrote letters in support of the business to
GM. Local MP Frank Valeriote, also the
Chair of the Official Oppositions Auto
Caucus, took a policitcal initiative to
push GM to reverse the decision.
However GM was attempting to split
up the multi-party suit, to fight each
dealership independently. In March
2010 the dealers’ legal counsel, lead by
Jonathan Lisus, won a motion to keep
the group together.
After fifteen months, the dealerships
were successful in resolving their lawsuit
against General Motors. A decision was
received in August of 2010 with 11 dealerships retaining their businesses and
the remainder agreeing to settlements.
Guelph’s Robinson Pontiac will become
Robinson Buick GMC and remains a
GM dealership, continuing to sell and
service GM products just as they have
for the past 45 years.
Unfortunately 240 dealerships across
Canada did close during GM’s restructuring, including Saturn, Saab and other
GM providers. Despite one of the most
challenging years for GM and the entire
automotive industry, GM Canada
reported in January 2010 that it retained
its status as Canada’s automotive sales
leader delivering 254,257 vehicles for the
calendar year.
On November 30, GM Canada
announced the addition of another shift
at the Oshawa plant, for the Buick Regal
and the Camero Convertible line, recalling 700 workers.
The second major rehiring in a month,
the two new shifts will see 1300 people
hired–most who were previously laid off,
plus 300 new workers. It is the first time
since 2002 that GM has hired new people to the assembly plant. While it shows
the automotive industry is recovering,
the 4400 workers today, up from 3100 in
September of 2010, still doesn’t compare
to the 8900 workers that were employeed
in Oshawa in 2008, and the 23,000 workers in the mid 1980’s.
“Car sales in general are gaining
momentum, both in Canada and the
U.S. The availability of leasing is coming
back slowly, although for now it is only
available on Buick and Cadillac products,” comments Robinson. “Personally,
we find car sales are continuing to grow.
Although Pontiac was a big brand for us,
we have had to switch our focus to new
GMC and Buick products, with a larger
used car department. The vehicles however are changing–Buick is coming out
with some great new products. What was
once considered a more conservative line
of Buick cars are now appealing to a
wider and younger crowd.”
“We appreciate that the communitiy
was behind us with their loyalty and
support,” adds Robinson. “We stood up
for what we believed in. We fought
hard and we are looking forward to
being here well into the future.”

Guelph Sustainability Discussions:
Sustaining is a new measure that is being used more and more given the
rapid pace of change and the appearance and disappearance of fads and
trends. Sustaining positive economic development, sustainable use of the
environment and social sustainability form the “triple bottom line” that
has been referred to for a number of years. “Corporate Social
Responsibility” is a variation on the theme. The idea is that in a community, these three areas are connected and necessary to maintain vibrancy.
The fourth pillar, cultural sustainability, is related to social sustainability.
Why does a Chamber of Commerce get involved in triple and quadruple bottom line conversations? Chambers at their core promote healthy communities. Healthy communities are good
for business, and business is good for healthy communities. This year, thanks to the support of
the Trillium Foundation of Ontario, the Guelph Chamber has presented a three part series on
Sustainability. This past January, at the Frank Hasenfratz Centre for Excellence in Manufacturing
the Guelph Chamber presented the Technology Economy Conference. In June the Chamber
held an environmental conference at The Centre, showing how business is employing conservation of power and water and reduction of waste. Guelph has a rich network of social support
agencies, many of which were partners in presenting the Social Sustainability Forum on
November 25th at the Delta Guelph Hotel and Conference Centre.
We often think of the environment or the economy when we hear the word 'Sustainability',
but for a community to function and be sustainable, the basic needs of its residents must be met.
A sustainable community must have the ability to maintain and build on its own resources and
have the resiliency to prevent and/or address problems in the future: whether environmental,
economic, or social.
The second annual Technology Economy event is being planned for January 18, 2011 again
focused on business in the knowledge economy. The past two years have seen significant change
in Ontario’s manufacturing businesses, with technology playing an ever increasing role. Guelph is
fortunate to have a vibrant industrial sector, which is complimented by a vibrant technology sector. A growing environmental cluster joins our long standing agribusiness group. The Guelph
Technology Economy Conference will launch another year of discussions for continuing to build a
stronger community here in Guelph, now and for the future.

On the first
day of
December,
Continuing Studies at Wilfrid Laurier University is pleased
to offer the Advocis' CFP® program. Designed to help
financial planners achieve their goals, this program covers
the fundamentals of building a comprehensive financial
plan. Upon completion, the CFP® designation establishes
Financial Planners as dedicated professionals with the
know-how to assist clients while adhering to high ethical
standards.
Laurier will offer the Core Curriculum courses and the
Capstone Course at regularly scheduled intervals. The Core
Curriculum winter program includes, Financial Planning
Fundamentals, and Comprehensive Practices in Risk and
Retirement Planning. Future courses will cover
Contemporary Practices in Financial Planning, and Wealth
Management and Estate Planning.
My financial advisor said to mePay year-end expenses. Many can only
be claimed as tax deductions if the
amounts are paid by the end of the
calendar year. These include alimony
payments, medical expenses and charitable contributions.
On the second day, take time out to sell
securities with accrued losses to shelter
realized gains from tax. Remember,
you can carry back 2010 net allowable
capital losses to recover tax paid on net
taxable capital gain reported in 2007,
2008 and 2009. The last day to execute
a trade on a Canadian exchange that
would settle in 2010 is Friday,
December 24. You should also know
not to purchase or repurchase the losers within 30 days before or after the
sale. You may consider buying similar
but not identical securities.
On the third day, if you turned 71
before December 31, you can still contribute to your Registered Retirement
Saving Plan (RRSP). For those who
are 71 at the end of the year, the final
RRSP contribution must be made, and
a maturity option selected, by
December 31.
On the fourth day, save for your child’s
or grandchild’s education by contributing to the registered Education
Saving Plan (RESP). The federal government will provide a direct grant to
the RESP of 20% of the first $2,500.
On the fifth day, you could contribute
to a Registered Disability Savings Plan
(RDSP), which is intended to help parents and others save for the long-term
financial security of a person who is
eligible for the disability tax Credit
The program has been offered as a self-study course in
the past, where students read the material, did the exercises
and then took the exam. “This material can be difficult to
learn on your own,” says Ted Ballantyne, Advocis Instructor
and Certified Management Accountant. “By now offering
the Advocis program through Continuing Education at
Laurier, students will benefit from interacting with instructors, asking questions, and getting feedback. This classroom
setting will hopefully help to increase the certification pass
rate.”
Experienced instructors from the industry will help students acquire an understanding of money fundamentals,
financial statements and analysis, legal fundamentals and
family law, plus government sponsored benefit programs.
Topics will be covered including risk management, life and
(disability amount).
On the sixth day, be generous and
donate public company securities
including segregated funds. There will
generally be no income inclusion in
respect of the accrued gain and the full
value of the gifted securities will be eligible for a donation credit.
On the seventh day, ensure that you
have opened up your Tax Free Saving
Account (TFSA) and one for each
member in your family over the age of
18. Similar to RRSP’s, income and capital gains earned in the TFSA are free
of tax. But unlike RRSP’s, that income
is not taxed on withdrawls at any time
and use them for any purpose without
attracting any tax. And what’s more,
any funds you withdraw from the
TFSA- both the income and capital
portions- are added to your contribution room in the next year.
On the eighth day, take a breath. Defer
purchases of long-term fixed investments until January 2011, and the
related tax will be deferred one year.
On the ninth day, corporate business
owners should make decisions about
their final remuneration from the
company.
On the tenth day, buy business assets.
Self-employed individuals and unincorporated business owners who
would otherwise make these capital
purchases in the near future should
consider shopping early to claim
depreciation for 2010 (although it’s
only half of the regular deprecation
amount).

On the eleventh day, update those travel
logs. Employees who use employerprovided cars primarily for business
may be eligible for a reduced standby
charge and a lower alternative operating benefit. If so, advise employers in
writing before year end in order to
have the alternative operating benefit
apply.
Last but not least, on the twelfth day,
reflect on your retirement savings

“Wellington County's Oldest Family Owned Funeral Home”
Pre-arranging one's own funeral is now widely
practiced across Canada. Gilbert MacIntyre & Son have
been helping individuals and families with funeral
prearrangements for almost 80 years. If you would like
to make an appointment to discuss prearrangements,
please contact us. Or, if you like, you can prearrange
your funeral online. You will be asked the same basic
questions you would in a one-on-one prearrangement
meeting; but within the "comfort" of your own lifestyle.
Our experience in dealing with prearranging funerals
has lead to the development of the GILBERT
MACINTYRE & SON TRUST PLAN for those who wish to
pre-pay their funeral expenses.
[email protected]
The GILBERT MACINTYRE & SON TRUST PLAN retains
all the advantages of the pre-arranged funeral, but goes
further with respect to the financial advantages.
· The GILBERT MACINTYRE & SON TRUST PLAN is
hedge against inflation. The cost of the funeral will
never increase, no matter how long it is before the
funeral services are required.
· Pre-payment reduces the financial demands on the
survivors. Costs will be paid out of income now,
rather than from much needed funds of the estate.
· Like a paid-up life insurance policy, this plan is of
immediate and far-reaching benefit to survivors.

St. Joseph’s opens Next Generation of long-term care beds
Project delivered on time and on budget
On November 19, 2010, Ontario’s Minister of
Health and Long-Term Care, The Honourable Deb
Matthews, visited St. Joseph’s Health Centre to officially open 96 new long-term care beds
Seniors are the fastest
growing segment in Canada.
And the fastest growth in
the senior population is
occurring among the oldest
Canadians. We have to
prepare now for what’s coming tomorrow.
Drawing attention to the growing need for help
for seniors in the coming decades, Ms. Matthews
commented on the responsibility everyone shares
for ensuring that their needs are met.
“These are the people who sacrificed to give our
generation the best education they could so we
could prosper,” she said. “They helped create a
society that ranks among the best in the world.
Providing care for them now when they need it is
the least we can do. A project like this one at St.
Joseph’s is one way of saying to our seniors that
‘we’ll be here for you.’”
According to figures from the Waterloo
Wellington Local Health Integration Network the
number of people in Waterloo Wellington aged 65
years and older is expected to be about 112,060,
an increase of close to 30,000, by 2015.
Seniors are the fastest growing segment in

The opening of the 96 new beds marks the end
of a long process that took the idea of the new

welcome addition for the many elderly men and
women who have been waiting for local long-term
care accommodation. Waiting lists have been long
and seniors and their worried families have been
faced with the difficult choice of accepting beds in
communities distant from their friends and families
or putting off admission. The new beds will help
our region’s entire network of health care operate
more efficiently.
“This will not only improve people’s quality of
life but will also reduce the number of patients in
acute care beds waiting for long-term care and the
admission wait-times for patients in Emergency
Departments,” says Marianne Walker, President of
St. Joseph’s Health Centre. “Our talented and
dedicated staff has worked very hard to reach this
day and I am proud to say that this project has
been delivered on time and on budget.”
“Today is both the culmination of a four-year
process that started as a wonderful dream,
and a new beginning for the men and women who
need care and will be welcomed to their
home at St. Joseph’s,” she adds. “It’s another step
in the collaborative relationship with our community partners to provide access to care when it is
needed. We are confident that, in partnership with

The opening of 96 new beds at St. Joseph’s is welcome news for seniors who
have been waiting for local, long-term care accommodation.
St. Joseph’s embarks on new venture
Affordable housing for seniors will help fill growing need
The good news is that seniors
are living longer. Life expectancy
data shows steady gains each
decade since the turn of the last
century. But living on a fixed
income over an extended period of time can create financial
strains as the cost of utilities
and other monthly expenditures
increase. Furthermore, deteriorating health or decreased
mobility as a consequence of
disease or a traumatic episode
like stroke can make accommodation in a standard apartment
geared to a general market
unsuitable. And in a university
town like Guelph, the competition at the lower end of the
rental market can be intense.
Of the 1,300 people on the
waiting list for public housing in
Guelph and Wellington, close to
one third are aged 55 years or
older and face waits of between
two and nine years. So it’s not
surprising that modest or low
income seniors have been identified as a vulnerable segment
requiring assistance to get the
appropriate, affordable housing
they need on a more timely
basis.
That’s the aim of a new
80-unit affordable housing that
St. Joseph’s has undertaken
with financial help from both the
federal and provincial governments, and in conjunction with
the County of Wellington.
Through the Canada-Ontario
Affordable Housing Program,
St. Joseph’s will receive $9.6
million dollars–$4.8 million each
from the federal and provincial
coffers. The remainder of the
$13.1 million project will come
from a discounted mortgage
through Canadian Mortgage
and Housing Corporation that
St. Joseph’s Housing has
agreed to take on.
Representatives from four
levels of government were on
hand at St. Joseph’s Health
Centre on November 22, 2010
to symbolically turn the sod on
the housing project that
Wellington-Halton Hills MP
Michael Chong said would help
“create jobs and improve the
quality of life for those who
need it most.”
“Quality, affordable hosing is
essential to the health and wellbeing of our seniors,” says
Guelph MPP Liz Sandals.

Long-term care beds fill growing need
Wellington Local Health Integration Network and St.
Joseph’s Health Centre Foundation, people who
need care in their latter years will find it here with
us in a warm, home-like setting.”
The beds are housed in a 60,791 square foot,
four-story addition to St. Joseph’s main building.
The new beds are divided into six units–two per
floor–which St. Joseph’s refers to as neighbourhoods in keeping with its community-oriented
philosophy. Each floor has its own dining area,
activity room, kitchenette, balcony, and
lounges complete with a cozy fireplaces. The
kitchenettes and activity rooms are available for
activities like baking, and will make it possible
for residents or their families to prepare
snacks on their own schedules. There is also a
kitchen table and chairs for family members
and residents to sit and share a cup of tea–just
like at home. Domestic washers and dryers are
available to give residents the opportunity to continue on with their normal household routines
and daily tasks if they choose to, although St.
Joseph’s provides a full laundry service to everyone.
Each neighbourhood has a centrally located
spa with tub and shower rooms, as well as a
towel warmer to prevent chills while specialized
whirlpool tubs will help protect residents’
skin integrity–important in the prevention of
bed sores.
Dining rooms are open in design with table

residents at dinnertime, while the aroma of the
food being heated in the adjacent open kitchen
will help stimulate their appetite–a benefit that’s
important to people in frail health.
St. Joseph’s aims to care for the whole person in
all of his or her physical, mental and spiritual
complexity. And indeed, when you enter St. Joseph’s
you’ll find art on the wall, sunny open spaces,
comfortable arm chairs and a general homey feeling to the rooms and common areas. There’s
also a full range of recreational activities, tailored
to the preferences and capability of each resident,
delivered by qualified recreation therapists,
including full-time music and horticultural
therapists.
A big part of life at St. Joseph’s revolves around
its gardens, and residents of the new wing naturally
have access to them. In this fresh outdoor setting
they can tend to their plants in raised planters
from their wheelchairs, either as participants in
St. Joseph’s horticultural therapy program or on
their own. Or they can enjoy an outdoor BBQ,
picnic or conversation with their families and
friends.
“Families will not only benefit from the additional
capacity that is now available, but also the high
quality care St. Joseph’s provides for many
years to come,” says Minister Deb Matthews.
A unique feature of the long-term care expansion
is the addition of three new bariatric rooms,
set aside for people who are very obese, technically
at least 100 pounds above their ideal body
weight but generally weighing in excess of 300
pounds. The bariatric rooms are larger, have wider
doorways, and are equipped with commodes,
beds, lifts and other equipment designed to handle
the extra weight in a way that’s safe for the resident
and will protect St. Joseph’s caregivers from onthe-job injuries.
“Residents who are very heavy have a hard time
finding a place that’s safe and livable for them,”
says Bill James-Abra. Manager, Social Work,
Recreation Therapy and Spiritual and Religious
Care. “You need specially designed rooms and
equipment to give them a good quality of life,
the freedom of movement they need, and a
measure of independence. At St. Joseph’s we
give a lot of thought to people in our community
who are challenging to care for, and who not everyone can take in.”

A home-like setting
“The 96 new beds at St. Joseph’s Health Centre will
mean that local residents will have access to high
quality long-term care closer to their families,”
says Liz Sandals, MPP, Guelph. “These beds will
benefit both residents who can no longer manage
in their own homes and patients who need to move
out of hospital into a home-like environment.”
“Families will not only benefit
from the additional capacity
that is now available, but also
the high quality care
St. Joseph’s provides for
many years to come.”
Deb Matthews
Ontario Minister of Health
and Long-Term Care
“The new rooms will help us give bariatric residents some much-needed care–care that they
might not otherwise get,” he says. “St. Joseph’s has
a long, proud tradition of serving where we’re
especially needed and we take that commitment
very much to heart.”
St. Joseph’s long-term care expansion is part of
the Ontario government’s Emergency Department
Action Plan which is investing in communities
experiencing long-term care and community care
pressures. Emergency department wait times are
affected by the availability of hospital beds–some
of which are occupied by individuals awaiting
placement in a long-term care home.
When the addition welcomes all of its new
family, St. Joseph’s will be home to 240 long-term
care residents. It will also continue in its role as
Guelph’s only specialty rehabilitation and continuing complex care hospital for another 92 patients
as well as offering groundbreaking adult day
programs, medical clinics and services like osteoporosis diagnosis and treatment, physiotherapy,
occupational therapy, and speech-language
pathology therapy for young children.
The Next Generation Campaign on track to raise $6 million
Although the doors are open on St.
Joseph’s new wing, St. Joseph’s
Health Centre Foundation is still
working to raise the dollars to pay
for it. The Next Generation Capital
Campaign will raise $6 million from
local donations, of which $2.2 million will go towards the long-term
care expansion. The remaining dollars will be used to support a new
centre for St. Joseph’s leading-edge
Adult Day Programs, which includes
Guelph’s only day program for survivors of acquired brain injury, to
build a new auditorium and to create a one-of-a-kind garden that will
be a therapeutic tool for St.
Joseph’s rehabilitation hospital.
“As Guelph’s first hospital,
St. Joseph’s has a long history of
service in Guelph,” says Mary
DuQuesnay, Executive Director of
St. Joseph’s Health Centre
Foundation. “And, city and County
residents have a long history of supporting our work. It’s been a wonderful partnership over the last century and a half and I’m very confident that we will reach our goal.”
While government provides the
bulk of the funds necessary to build
top-notch facilities, health care in
our community also depends on the
efforts and generosity of many generations of people. Indeed, had St.
Joseph’s Health Centre Foundation
not stepped forward to guarantee a
share of the costs, St. Joseph’s new
wing would not have been possible.
Cognizance of the ties of care,
love and responsibility that bind one
generation to another prompted St.
Joseph’s Health Centre Foundation
to name its public campaign the
Next Generation Capital Campaign,
according to Barbara Macrae,
the Foundation’s Director of
Development, Marketing and
Communications.
“We wanted a name that would
convey St. Joseph’s long history of
care and service in Guelph and
Wellington County as well as something that captured the notion of
the continuum of care that occurs
between generations as each one
builds on the achievements of its
predecessor to provide for the public good,” she explains.

Local foundation supports innovative approach to rehabilitation
New garden first of its kind in North America
Thanks to a generous gift from local philanthropists
Larry and Shawn Pearson, who head up the LJ Pearson
Foundation, St. Joseph’s Health Centre has started work
on a new garden–the first of its kind in North America.
The Pearson Motion Garden will speed the recovery of
rehabilitation patients and help them make a better
transition from hospital to home.
"Our Foundation is very grateful to be able to be a
part of this ground-breaking idea of a motion garden to
help accelerate the recovery of patients in our community,” says Larry Pearson. “Both Shawn and I are very
impressed with the wonderful things that the staff at
St Joseph's are accomplishing and we very much look
forward to watching the development of the
Motion Garden."
The LJ Pearson Foundation $330,000 gift will make it
possible to start construction of the garden in the spring.
“We’re thrilled that Larry and Shawn stepped forward
to help us get this project underway,” says Marianne
Walker, President, St. Joseph’s Health Centre Guelph.
“This is a special initiative because the staff have taken it
from an idea to a project that is breaking new ground in
the area of outdoor rehabilitation–innovation that we
believe will have a significant positive impact on our
patients and others world-wide. We are deeply grateful
for the Pearsons’ generosity and excited to be working
together.”
To augment the traditional rehabilitation therapy that
takes place in the controlled environment found
indoors, the 14,4000 square foot Pearson Motion
Garden will take therapy out of the gym and put it in a
setting that more closely resembles the conditions that
patients will face in the real world life they’ll find when
they return home.
“Rehabilitation patients are returning to their community,” says physiotherapist Alanna Harris. “They also
want to return to the life they knew before their medical
condition arose–or as close to it as they can get. This garden will be a great tool to help them achieve their goals.”
Patients come to the St. Joseph’s for rehabilitation
after surgery–the amputation of a limb, joint replacement, by-pass or other kinds of surgery. Some patients
have chronic respiratory problems or are recovering
from a stroke. Still others have suffered a traumatic
injury at work or on the road that has affected their
spinal cord or brain. Stays can last for anywhere
from a couple of weeks to two months. Close to 600
patients are transferred to St. Joseph’s each year from
regional hospitals.
Rehabilitation patients go through a comprehensive
program that’s based on their individual needs and is
designed to promote healing and speed recovery.
Rehabilitation therapy can use weights, resistance training, repetitive movement and other techniques to build
strength, agility, and stability, to improve balance and
increase resilience.

“Patients will also be able to practice walking on
uneven surfaces like gravel and grass, negotiate ramps
and stairs, get over curbs,” say Harris. “We find these
are the things that can act as barriers to people when
they return home after rehab–barriers that can keep
them from accessing their community and doing the
things that give their life meaning and purpose.”
To ensure that the garden conforms to the individual
patient’s needs as much as possible, the designers have
enlisted the expertise from a diverse team including
occupational, physical, recreational, horticultural and
speech therapies, nurses, and physicians, as well as
housekeeping, dietary, health and safety, maintenance,
and research personnel.
Idea just grew and grew
The garden grew out of a need that physiotherapist
Harris and occupational therapy/physiotherapy assistant
Kim Vandermeer discovered through their work.
Surrounded by flat surfaces in the new St. Joseph’s
building back in 2003, they were looking for a ramp
that they could use in their patients’ therapy. They startAdds another dimension

Mary Duquesnay, Executive Director, St. Joseph’s Health Centre Foundation accepts cheque
from Larry and Shawn Pearson. The generous gift will let construction on innovative new
garden go forward. Background: Kim Vandermeer, Alanna Harris and Wanda Fabbian worked
together to grow the idea of the garden as a therapeutic tool in rehabilitation.
Fabbian frequently sees residents and patients experience mood improvements–exhibiting fewer signs of agitation and symptoms of depression–after participation in
her horticultural therapy program. And her observations
are backed up by controlled experiments and studies.
Research is accumulating that draws a strong relationship between exposure to nature and mood improvement, stress reduction, and greater feelings of satisfaction with care. It might even reduce recovery times and
assist in pain management. In one study patients who
were given a room with a nature view of trees appeared
to have better post-operative recoveries than patients
whose rooms looked out on a wall.
“We’re so excited to have the funding to make this
project a reality,” says Vandermeer. “It’s been a long
process and it’s still a little hard to believe that we’re
actually going to build this amazing, beyond-belief
thing.”

In Honour and in Remembrance–
A Lasting Tribute
Throughout the year we receive gifts to St. Joseph’s Health Centre Foundation from people who make a donation in

St. Joseph's Community Outreach Programs unveil results of innovative
research designed to help Acquired Brain Injury survivors
St. Joseph's Health Centre Guelph unveiled the results of
important research December 1, 2010 at the Centre’s
Westmount Road facility. The study was undertaken to
test the effectiveness of mindfulness meditation in helping survivors of acquired brain injuries (ABIs) cope
with the challenges they face.
Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) is an
intervention designed to help individuals be present to
what is happening in the moment. MBSR has been used
for a number of conditions (e.g., breast cancer, psoriasis, anxiety disorders) and with veterans of the conflicts
in Afghanistan and Iraq to help them cope with the
effects of traumatic brain injuries and/or Post Traumatic
Stress Disorder. In peer-reviewed studies, the practice
has been shown to assist with pain management, to
increase self awareness, and to decrease symptoms of
anxiety and depression.
Survivors of acquired brain injuries (ABIs) often
experience difficulties with deliberation, organization,
concentration, self-monitoring, and use of feedback.
These deficits can severely limit their daily life and
greatly reduce their quality of life.
Learning effective coping strategies has the potential
to benefit ABI survivors. A few studies have shown
MBSR holds significant promise for enhancing their
quality of life by increasing relaxation, focus, and problem-solving and enhancing feelings of personal responsibility, control, and compassion.
St. Joseph’s conducted its research with 47 survivors
of mild to moderate brain injuries. Participants took
part in a 10-week before and after assessment of a
modified MBSR intervention. The effectiveness of MBSR
was evaluated by measuring memory, attention, selfesteem, anxiety, and depression both before and
after the intervention. Results from participants receiving the intervention were compared against a control
group who completed the before and after assessments
only.
A number of benefits
The study’s findings demonstrated that mindfulness
meditation presented a number of benefits for people
with acquired brain injuries. Most significantly, survivors participating in mindfulness experienced a significant increase in their ability to manage pain. They also
experienced a reduction in depressive symptoms and
stress levels and had improved sense of well-being. One
finding that was specific to women was improvements
in self-esteem.
The aim is to share the findings, through publication
of the results with other care providers and program
developers working with ABI survivors across North
America.
“We want to ensure that other caregivers and survivors know about this work because of its potential to
help,” says Audrey Devitt, St. Joseph’s Director,
Community Outreach. “It’s a very cost-effective program
to operate and holds the promise of improving survivors’ quality of life.”
Acquired brain injury is more common than breast
cancer, HIV, AIDS, multiple sclerosis, and spinal cord
injury combined. Several hundred brain injuries occur
in our region annually.

geared to wheelchair-bound tenants. The project’s location at St. Joseph’s also brings
tenants, all of whom will be over the age of 65,
close to important resources and services like
the Centre’s leading-edge Day Programs that
help seniors maintain their independence
in the community.
“Many seniors living in Guelph need affordable
housing; and a link to our community services
will assist seniors to live in their home as long as
possible, says Matt Stanley, Chair, St. Joseph’s
Housing. “This project is an integral part of our
long-range plans to build a health care campus
with different levels of health care, housing and
community support programs.”
St. Joseph’s Next Generation Project
An ambitious and comprehensive redevelopment of St. Joseph’s facility and campus will see our 44-acre site
completely revitalized–an initiative that will help us serve emerging community needs more effectively.
• leverages private philanthropy to bring more than $52.4 million in infrastructure spending to Guelph from
federal and provincial sources
• creates more health care and housing capacity for senior men and women in Guelph/Wellington
• supports innovation, improves system-wide efficiency, and creates high-quality jobs

This year St. Joseph’s begins celebrating its 150th anniversary of service in Guelph Wellington.
What’s next?
Today we continue our mission of care by
preparing for what’s coming tomorrow.
Yesterday
• Guelph’s first hospital bed was opened
in 1861 followed by:
• Guelph’s first lung resection
• Guelph’s first hip replacement
• Guelph’s first corneal transplant
• Guelph’s first arteriogram
• Guelph’s first angioplasty
Today
• St. Joseph’s is Guelph’s only specialty
rehabilitation and complex continuing care
hospital
• Guelph’s first choice for long-term care
• Our region’s only clinical telemedicine site
• Our adult day programs are recognized as
among the best in Canada
• Guelph’s only program for survivors of
acquired brain injury
• Guelph’s only rheumatologist
Now St. Joseph’s is changing–growing to embrace the needs of a generation. We’re building new capacity today to deliver the health care
your community will need, the exceptional care you’ll want–tomorrow.
Tomorrow
The redevelopment of St. Joseph’s Health Centre
signals a great future for health care in the Guelph-Wellington
community – providing care that will
reach more people will help health care throughout
our region operate more efficiently,
effectively and creatively break new ground with
innovation and new ideas, and include people who have
not always had access to the care they need.
St. Joseph’s is building the next generation of health care.

Guelph Hydro Supports Conestoga College’s Powerline
Technician Program
Guelph Hydro Electric Systems Inc. has
announced the endowment of the Rick
Lane/Corrie Bridgman Memorial Academic
Grant which will provide two $1,000 bursaries
annually for full-time students in Year Two of
the Powerline Technician program at Conestoga
College, one of Canada’s premier polytechnic
institutes with campuses in Guelph, Kitchener
and Waterloo.
Funded by Guelph Hydro Electric Systems Inc.
as a memorial to two employees who passed
away, the Rick Lane/Corrie Bridgman Memorial
Academic Grant provides support for students
who wish to embark on a career in the power
industry. To be eligible for the bursaries, students
must achieve a minimum average of 70 percent
in Year One of the Powerline Technician program and demonstrate financial need.
“We felt that a grant to support financially
challenged students preparing themselves for
careers in the electricity sector would be a fitting
memorial to two well-respected colleagues who
sadly passed away while actively employed by
Guelph Hydro,” commented Kazi Marouf, Chief
Operating Officer, Guelph Hydro Electric
Systems Inc.
Guelph Hydro Electric Systems Inc. is also supporting Conestoga’s new Powerline Technician
program at the Ingersoll campus with the donation of a 45-foot, single bucket truck, hydro
poles and switchgear for use as teaching aides. A
representative of Guelph Hydro also serves on
the Local Advisory Committee of the program.
“The Canadian Electricity Association reports
that within the electricity sector, more than 26
per cent of the workforce will be eligible for
retirement within the next ten years. The new
Powerline Technician program offered by
Conestoga College will provide Guelph Hydro
and other utilities with a supply of well-trained
apprentices in coming years,” said Barry Chuddy,
Chief Executive Officer, Guelph Hydro Inc.
Conestoga’s Powerline Technician program,
offered at the Ingersoll campus, provides a
unique opportunity for students to prepare for
all facets of powerline and related occupations.
Through the two-year diploma program, students learn the skills required for the construction, maintenance and repair of overhead and
underground power systems and may work on
power lines, communication networks and at
electrical power stations. Students are registered
as Powerline Technician Apprentices with the
Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities
(MTCU) and a Consortium representing the
employer group. Two co-op terms are included
in the program and contribute to the required
benchmark hours and hands-on skills training
for journeypersons.
“The active support of our industry partners is
an essential component in the success of our
programs and our graduates. Whether it’s support for the program in the form of equipment,
or financial support for deserving students who
may not otherwise be able to participate, these
investments in the Powerline Technician program will contribute to the excellence of the program, its graduates, their employers and the
community,” adds Mike McClements, Executive
Dean, School of Engineering and Information
Technology, Conestoga College Institute of
Technology and Advanced Learning.
Do you need a Tetanus Shot?
by Anna Bartolomucci
Tetanus is a medical condition, caused by bacteria called Clostridium tetani. This bacteria produces a neurotoxin which affects function of the
nerves and leads to prolonged contraction of
skeletal muscle fibres, or muscle spasm. The
spasms occur in the neck, abdomen and extremities and can be either localized or generalized.
The muscle spasms of the face and neck can
make it difficult to open the mouth and is one of
the most common symptoms of tetanus and is
also why it is referred to as lockjaw.
Symptoms of generalized tetanus could
include irritability, sore muscles, cramps, weakness, difficulty chewing and swallowing, fever,
irregular heartbeat, change in blood pressure,
and difficulty breathing.
The bacteria that causes tetanus is a hardy
organism that can live in the form of a spore for
many years. These spores can live in soil, manure
or dust and can infect humans by entering a cut
or puncture wound. Wounds with foreign bodies
(ie. rusty nail) are most at risk for developing
tetanus. Animal bites, burns, frostbite, crush
injuries abscesses, or non-sterile injection of
drugs can also lead to tetanus.
The tetanus vaccine was developed in the
1920’s and is currently used to routinely immu-
nize children. This vaccine is
required by law for all children attending school in
Ontario (unless exempted).
When the vaccine is given in the required
dosages, it provides 100% protection. Boosters
are then required every 10 years and sometimes
sooner if you sustain a deep, contaminated
wound and it has been more than 5 years since
your last immunization.
Review your immunization status with your
doctor and be sure you are up to date. Even with
early treatment like antibiotics and antitoxins,
tetanus kills 20% of those who get the disease,
so get the shot!

Due diligence goes beyond safety
Be the change you want to see
by Lynne Bard
We often forget about the health in health and safety
and focus on providing a safe work environment for
our workers. Although the Occupational Health and
Safety Act does not specifically state that an employer
must protect its workers from contracting the flu or
other such diseases, this duty is implied under the
“general duty” clause contained in the Act. The “general duty” clause requires employers to provide a safe
and healthy workplace and take measures to address
foreseeable hazards that aren’t specifically mentioned
in the OHS laws.
During flu season, the risk of contracting and
spreading this disease in the workplace is inevitable
and therefore is covered under the general duty clause
to ensure that your workforce is adequately prepared
for the upcoming flu season.
So how do you comply? Here are a few tips:
by Lisa Reaume, JA Executive Director
1. Get organized: - Form a committee and spearhead the
planning efforts
2. Assess the risks: Assess risk of workers contracting the flu
and the impact on the organization if a significant number of workers get sick at once.
3. Protect workers health: Educate workers on personal
hygiene and other measures for guarding against the risk
of infection.
4. Make changes to your HR Policies: A workers rights to
refuse unsafe work (fear of exposure) and disclosure of
medical information if required are just a few things that
need to be reviewed.
5. Develop a Business Continuity Plan: A business continuity plan in addition to providing steps to keep operations
going in the event of a natural disaster should cover flu
outbreaks and other such diseases that could cripple an
organization if workers are off for a long period of time.
6. Prepare for disruptions in services and supply: Suppliers
and Service providers may not be able to meet demand
due to business interruption in their organization due to
flu, natural disaster or other uncontrolled events.
7. Prepare for absences
8. Establish a Communication Plan
You cannot afford to wait and see how bad the flu
season will be. Due diligence is taking the steps to
protect your workers health today.

How often has it been said that today’s young
people lack the basic business skills entering into
the workforce that are required? Such skills as
fundamental budgeting, understanding balance,
equity, and derivatives. Skills such as business
case making, understanding marketplaces and
market forces, or even being able to understand
what a “cold call” involves.
When do these skills get taught – and from
whom? It’s the very reason that an organization
such as Junior Achievement of GuelphWellington is working in partnership with our
education system–and why our volunteer core
comes from the business environment within
our area. Our business leadership is mentoring
today’s students to become tomorrow’s business
leaders–providing real life, hands-on experience
that is required to make the change needed for
an unknown tomorrow.
Skills taught at a very young age are transfer-
able, that has been shown time and again. Skills
taught for the business world are beyond the
basic reading, writing, and arithmetic–the socalled 3 R’s–and it is more important than ever,
given the direction of our globalized economy.
In essence, the very things that business strives
for on a daily basis–finding the right people
with the right skill set to do the right role for
your company or organization–can be taught at
an early age by the very individuals who are
seeking these transformative skill sets: YOU.
That is the inherent value being provided
through Junior Achievement, the remarkable
ability to make a lasting impression upon the
most impressionable minds in the entire world,
our children, our future–one where YOU are the
change YOU want to see.
