PHYSICAL/ITÉ BIENNALE INTERNATIONALE D’ART NUMÉRIQUE INTERNATIONAL DIGITAL ARTS BIENNIAL 1 MAI - 19 JUIN 2014 MAY 1 - JUNE 19, 2014 MONTRÉAL (QC), CANADA BIANMONTREAL.CA Alain Thibault, directeur artistique BIANMONTREAL.CA Alain Thibault, Artistic Director PHYSICAL is an invitation to revisit our intimacy with machines and to reflect on the PHYSICALITÉ donne à voir et à entendre les données et les algorithmes, à rendre matériel l’immatériel, à visualiser l’invisible. For this second edition of the BIAN, I have chosen a two part theme. PHYSICAL/ITÉ is an opportunity to tackle two very current ideas: the place of the body and the return of the material in relation to the digital. BIANMONTREAL.CA and implications of the body and offers a unique reflection on how to render or reveal its physical characteristics through new technologies. Attention is also drawn to how the principle of transforming or converting one form of energy to another, through the digital filter, offers a new way of thinking about our environment. The works presented intensify the multisensorial experience of the body, explore its hidden or forgotten potentiality and question the tension or harmony between perception and cognition to generate an intimate dialogue between fact and fiction. PHYSICALITÉ allows us to see and hear algorithms, to render material the immaterial and to visualize the invisible. This emphasis on the return of the physical, on materiality and objecthood is reflected more broadly in, for example, the Internet of things and the rise of hacker, DIY and Maker/Fab Lab cultures. The first International Digital Arts Biennial (BIAN) in 2012 made us aware of how ubiquitous the digital had become in every sphere of our lives. PHÉNOMÈNES /PHENOMENA highlighted the all-knowing, almost magical character of the digital. PHÉNOMÈNES /PHENOMENA soulignait le caractère omniscient et presque magique du numérique. ways in which they are becoming extensions of our senses. In fact, we now need to redefine and relearn how we coexist with technology in order to see this not so much as an interaction but rather as an interrelation. 1ER MAI – 19 JUIN 2014 / MAY 1 – JUNE 19, 2014 PHYSICAL/ITÉ Digital arts allow us to rethink the relationship between artists and researchers, who then fire our imagination and redraw the map of art. The permeable boundaries between art and research lead to new forms of performance, including immersive environments, virtual reality and augmented reality. These examples all share a discrete yet fundamental protagonist: the body. Carnal, polysensorial and cognitive, it perceives, feels, encodes, decodes and interprets, conditioned as it is by its perceptive and cognitive systems. Together these processes create a fascination that digital arts explore. Exploring the theme PHYSICAL/ITÉ, the second International Digital Arts Biennial takes a look at the issues 2E BIENNALE INTERNATIONALE D’ART NUMÉRIQUE ND 2 INTERNATIONAL DIGITAL ARTS BIENNIAL MICHEL LEMIEUX VICTOR PILON (QC-CA) MICHEL LEMIEUX VICTOR PILON (QC-CA) 4DART.COM MBAM.QC.CA 4DART.COM MBAM.QC.CA EXHIBITION MAY 1#AUGUST 31, 2014 THE MONTREAL MUSEUM OF FINE ARTS MARDI, JEUDI, VENDREDI : 11 H ! 17 H MERCREDI : 11 H ! 21 H SAMEDI, DIMANCHE : 10 H ! 17 H TUESDAY, THURSDAY, FRIDAY: 11 A.M. # 5 P.M. Michel Lemieux et Victor Pilon, 4D ART Les artistes remercient Bell, partenaire du 30 anniversaire de Lemieux Pilon 4D ART, ainsi que le CALQ, le CAC et le CAM pour leur soutien. e Digital arts, by enabling an actual confrontation between reality and virtuality, allow us to expand the possibilities of scenic representation while transforming and manipulating our perception of reality, as well as questioning our relationship to the inexplicable. Our work regarding the integration of digital images to the stage has always been accomplished in the aim of developing a language specific to the mixing of the performing arts, while recognizing the profoundly human character of the body of flesh and bones. Our creations suggest a performer whose corporeal envelope can be evanescent and whose body, as in film, can be fragmented and divided. From the first moments of our existence, we are jostled between two poles: interior and exterior, body and spirit, perception and reason. Our era, which increasingly relies on the disembodied digital world and technological virtuality, grants us the opportunity to reflect on the way in which our duality, rooted in our physical bodies, unfolds in this new reality. 30 ANS DE CRÉATION SCÉNIQUE 30 YEARS OF INNOVATIVE PERFORMANCES As a principal partner, the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts is launching the programming for the International Digital Arts Biennial with an exhibition by Michel Lemieux and Victor Pilon. PHYSICAL/ITY is meant as a premonition, an intuition of artistic representations in the near or far future. A visualisation of the new paradigm created by Turing and von Neumann. MACM.ORG In this exhibition, I wanted to address the place of human and objects in the digital world through the work of artists who I consider to have a hybrid approach. Artists who through their artistic process are in perfect phase with the ever-growing influence that design, gaming, robotics and digital art, among others, have in modern culture and contemporary art. Louise Simard, Musée d’art contemporain de Montréal The Musée d’art contemporain de Montréal (MAC) is delighted to present C4I, an outstanding work by the composer and visual artist Ryoji Ikeda, and to once again participate in the International Digital Arts Biennial. Ryoji Ikeda’s practice explores the rationality, simplicity and intricacy of ultrasounds, frequencies and the essential characteristics of sound. He collaborates closely with Carsten Nicolai, whose installation unidisplay was presented at the MAC in 2012; together, they examine error structures and repetitive loops in so"ware and computer programmed music, creating audiovisual modules for real-time sound visualization. A master of minimalist sound, Ryoji Ikeda takes the manipulation of sonic data to the limits of perception. In his work, the sublime blends with infinity, and the nexus of sensations triggered by his visual and sonic compositions evokes a vast, intangible and strikingly elegant world. Creating interactions between science and culture, the works in this exhibition illustrate “the new alliance” advocated by the Belgian winners of the Nobel Prize in Chemistry, Ilya Prigogine and Isabelle Stengers, a concept that reinvents science and shows that balance is not static. Lungs explores involuntary bodily functions; Different Ways to Infinity addresses the accumulation of knowledge dominated by major universal theories; and Herbal Ghetto 2.0 offers a reflection on the use of new energies, biotechnology and the citizen as artist. The purpose of the quest of Landscape is to break down the dichotomy that opposes the virtual world with a particular idea of reality, comparing the supposedly natural and artificial in order to move beyond duality. Based on the signal-to-noise ratio, which sets significant against insignificant information, Signal to Noise invites visitors to immerse themselves in a kinetic composition, illustrating the eternal calculation of an auto-poetic machine. 23 MAI À PARTIR DE 17 H ! 1ER JUIN 2014 MUSÉE D’ART CONTEMPORAIN DE MONTRÉAL MAY 23 STARTING AT 5 P.M # JUNE 1, 2014 MUSÉE D’ART CONTEMPORAIN DE MONTRÉAL LAB[AU], LAURA COLMENARES GUERRA ET TODOR TODOROFF, SÉBASTIEN LACOMBLEZ, CÉDRIC SABATO, FÉLIX LUQUE SÁNCHEZ (WB-BE) Signal to Noise immerses the spectator in patterns of sonic motion, based on generative principles executed by 512 mechanical split-flaps. Herbal Ghetto 2.0 is a self-energizing project, controlled by a meteorological station. This project allows the artist to control four turntables in relation with the four elements. The turntables react in real time, depending on the level of sunshine, the wind speed, humidity and the dew point. Herbal Ghetto 2.0 proposes a real “living” interactive quartet which is receptive to changes in weather. Digital files – generated by a complex computer process – are printed on photosensitive paper. To do this, the printer, rather than applying pigments to a surface, inscribes the image directly on the material through light rays. Here, the digital image is physicality. This approach – between photography techniques, generative arts and pictorial representations – gives rise to high-definition images that evoke extraterrestrial landscapes: oceans of liquid metals, pyrite deserts, and more. D.W.I. brings together experiments in geometry and physics as fictional strategies to generate infinity. Focusing on the limits between scientific modelling and reality, theory and perception, the installation plays with different meanings of endlessness. Chaos is shown as physical and electronic phenomena, using Lorentz attractors and fluid dynamics. Clones are represented as identical mechanical machines (inverted pendulums), that use human behaviours, fuzzy logic and dri" to find equilibrium. Space-filling polyhedra (rhombic dodecahedrons) are used as sculpture generators. In the 1950s, an American geologist named Manley Natland conceived of a plan to separate oil from sand through the use of underground nuclear explosions. Though this technique was never used, it highlights the obsession and greed driving one of the top, divisive issues in Canada concerning everyone from Barack Obama to Neil Young. Robyn Moody’s sculptural installation made up of hundreds of spinning gears is the second work in a series that provokes a timely reflection on the human and environmental impact of oilsands exploitation in Alberta. #spectronMTL Spectron opens our eyes to the city. Mounted binoculars, similar to those found at scenic lookouts, let viewers travel through time in the Quartier des spectacles. In any direction they look, information about the uses and functions of the neighbourhood’s buildings spanning more than three decades appears through the lenses. By overlayering reality, Spectron offers a critical exploration of the urban environment. The layers of information reveal socio-historical ruptures hidden in the new development and converted buildings of the Quartier. Four sound and sculptural diffusers, containing elements of both the weather vane and the fog horn, make up this monumental installation that renders in movement and sound the direction and force of the wind blowing simultaneously on two continents: in Montreal, and Quebec City, as well as in Rennes and Nantes, France. The wind data recorded in each city is transmitted live to the diffusers, controlling the orientation of each of the structures and orchestrating the combined chords that make up the harmonic whole perceived at the heart of the installation. The space is surrounded by what appear to be individual listening stations. What is particularly intriguing is the war machine in the rhetorical sense, the persuasion machine. Once the listening station is activated by the numerical code, visitors hear all sorts of music for ads related to the lifestyle of the armed forces. From April 11 to June 1, 2014, audiences will have an opportunity to see seven original works inspired by the films of Norman McLaren, projected onto the façades of buildings in Montreal’s Quartier des Spectacles. Montreal creators Kid Koala (in collaboration with Hololabs) and Theodore Ushev (with Iregular and Daily tous les jours) will celebrate the inventiveness and genius of the great filmmaker with McLaren Wall to Wall, an initiative of the National Film Board of Canada (NFB) and the Quartier des Spectacles. Their original interactive creations will be joined by the four films selected following an international call for projects launched last December, forming an unforgettable and playful pathway that will light up the night in downtown Montreal, in commemoration of the 100th anniversary of the birth of Canada’s most famous animation filmmaker. Science Faction: Machine Takeover brings together the work of four emerging and mid-career artists from Canada, Germany and Japan. Given the theme of the 2014 edition of Sight & Sound – Science Faction – these works bring to light the power of the imaginary, so present in the realm of science fiction, through physical, mechanized manifestations of everyday sounds and natural phenomena. Erin Sexton (Montreal), Darsha Hewitt (Montreal), Christian Faubel (Germany), and Ally Mobbs (Japan) delve into a world where human-machine interactions are commonplace occurrences; one in which we are no longer shocked by mutating futures. Chris Salter, Hexagram - Concordia Chris Salter, Hexagram-Concordia Why do complex patterns like Zebra stripes, Leopard spots or skin pigmentation emerge? In 1952 mathematician Alan Turing wrote a radical paper in which he explored spontaneous pattern formation in biological systems. Termed “reaction-diffusion systems,” Turing developed the mathematical models to explore how certain chemical reactions that are similar suddenly develop into non-linear, “chaotic” patterns. It is Turing’s interest in how stable systems transform in dynamic, chaotic but ordered patterns that inspires Amsterdam based artist TeZ’s new monumental audio-visual installation PLASM. Utilizing large scale HD projection and multi-channel sound as well as unique custom developed so"ware that implement Turing’s mathematical models, PLASM takes the viewer into a transforming landscape of organic forms, seamlessly evolving through a generative composition. The Satosphere’s spherical projection sweeps visitors into the heart of this gigantic work by allowing a perceptual experience on a human scale. Visitors can transform the interchange in real time, changing its structure and the journey, by manipulating a wooden model placed, like a construction game, at the centre of the dome. They thus create another architecture, one that is dynamic and unstable, altering the idea we have of the structure and its final form. In the next room, Rotes Rauschen (Red noise) translates the inaudible low frequencies constantly emitted by the earth into the fluttering of an overarching pendulum whose awareness is also at times informed by the shi"ing of mass through space. Tilman Reiff and Volker Morawe have created an ironic work dealing with the promise of a pseudo-multichannel present. OIS, part of the Zentrum für Kunst und Medientechnologie’s (ZKM) ArtOnYourScreen project, takes a look back at the basics of communication through a simple means: installations consisting of 60-Watt light bulbs and light switches are located at both the ZKM and the Goethe-Institut. While one can turn on the lamps virtually through the web interface, they can only be turned off manually at the ZKM or the Goethe-Institut. This experimental set-up takes apart the idea of the possibility of multiple, simultaneous exchanges through one dimensionality. Chris Salter’s n-Polytope is inspired by the experiments carried out by Iannis Xenakis in the 1960’s: the first Polytope, a “ Gesamtkunstwerk ” of sorts, resulted from a combination of Xenakis’s knowledge in the fields of sound, architecture and mathematics. Almost fi"y years later, n-Polytope offers a unique and complex time-based experience of space with light and sound. In a day and age when it has become almost impossible to experience space and time in a linear, non fragmented fashion, the fact of relocating the body in an environment that submerges the senses and calls for contemplation feels like the perfect antidote for the state of techno-fatigue we are all experiencing in our multi-screened and multi-layered, somehow disembodied daily lives. The Galerie B-312 is pleased to welcome the french duo HeHe. Under this sardonic acronym is the conversation of two involved accomplices, Helen Evans and Heiko Hansen. The artists are presenting the video version of Nuage Vert, an outstanding intervention produced in Finland and France which consisted in illuminating the fumes discharged from a thermal power plant or an incinerator with a green coloured laser beam. With infrared cameras and sensors, the dimension of the beam was transformed according to recorded variables. The strength of Nuage Vert resides in the paradox it harbors: under the extreme beauty of this moving luminous shape, the fleeting imprints of our occupation of the land and its impacts on the environment unfold before our very eyes. With this exhibition, he presents an interactive work, comprised of 192 motors/fans placed behind a grid made up of sheets of paper that move as visitors move. Samuel St-Aubin has been part of the electronic arts world since 2002. He has helped produce the work of a number of Quebec artists and collectives. For the past few years, he has been focusing on his own creative efforts. An electronics technician and sound artist, he reinvents everyday objects. He injects another dimension into his creations that goes beyond the utilitarian reality of the object, by diverting them from their primary purpose, radically disrupting our relationship with the object. With unflinching precision, his works let us tap into the poetry of the everyday, discovered in the simplicity of existence. Featuring a few hundred videos of varying lengths, the installation 2012 relates visual and sound moments Line Nault experienced and recorded during the year. Every day she wrote a few lines about what remained of her day and then explored the distance between memory and reality, through expressions of her body in movement. The real-time movement of the audience in front of an interactive device made up of a multi-layered screen probes these time capsules and invites the audience to literally act on the artist’s traces. Grégory Chatonsky, UQAM and Incident.net Grégory Chatonsky, UQAM et Incident.net Instrument images are images we can touch, play with, transform, and correct. They are image interfaces between the eye and the hand that produce a loop between certain parts of the body. Histoires d’interactions is a post-digital exhibition that turns the game on its head. The digital image disappears, leaving a series of signs that resemble hieroglyphics and that describe the player’s movements and the territory covered in the game world. This post-partition is post-digital, when the spread of digital technology marks its disappearance. It inscribes on an analogue medium a game that can never be replayed. It remains a memory without recollection. Immanences presents works that reflect the theme for this edition of the Biennial, “PHYSICAL/ITÉ ” first directly, by linking the audience to the space where the works are experienced, and then in their relationship to their physical realm. Whether coded, electronic or tactile and tangible, this attention to their living conditions underlies an approach that is both aesthetic and critical. It is a response to the types of transcendent and ethereal experiences that are the norm in our relationship with everyday digital objects, the inner workings of which remain impenetrable, both fascinating and isolating us. Immanences brings together works that contrast, in the face of an aesthetic of excess, a slow-moving, fortuitous and embodied experience. First, the duo will host a conference reflective of their artistic practice, at the crossroads of art, the digital, hacking and activism, in order to stimulate critical thinking of the world through the reappropriation of technological issues. Two interactive video installations by Art-Act will then be presented in the gallery (Uncanny Valley, Revolustar). Each installation, conceived from the structure of a video game, explores the paradoxical relationships of power and dependence which arise between the artificial and the living. Interrupted by coffee breaks, appetizers and drinks, the event’s program will conclude with the musical performance by Le fruit vert, with the collaboration of Sabrina Ratté.
