INTRODUCTION
The passé composé is formed of the auxiliary être (to be) or avoir (to have) in the present
tense, followed by the past participle of the conjugated verb.
The passé composé is used to express an action that took place in the past and is finished
(example: j'ai fini mes devoirs ce matin = I finished my homework this morning).
The passé composé can be translated as the English present perfect (I have finished) or the
English simple past (I finished).
3rd group verbs are highly irregular. Unlike the past participle of the 1st and 2nd group verbs,
which ends in “é” and “i” respectively, the past participle of 3rd group verbs can have various
endings: -i, -u, -t, -s.
CONJUGATING 3RD GROUP VERBS IN THE PASSÉ COMPOSÉ
To conjugate a verb in the passé composé: auxiliary être (to be) or avoir (to have) +past
participle
However, it is important to remember that the ending of the past participle will depend on the
auxiliary verb used to form the passé composé:
With the auxiliary avoir (to have), the ending of the past participle remains unchanged,
regardless of the number or gender of the subject. Example: Nous avons lu ce livre = we
read this book
With the auxiliary être (to be), the ending of the past participle will change according to the
gender and number of the subject. Example: je suis née le 1er mai 1980 = I was born on
the 1st May 1980.

Here are 24 commonly used French verbs, conjugated in the 1st person singular and 1st person
plural. The infinitive is compared to the je and nous forms of the verb in order to exemplify the range
of different stems and endings.

connaître (to know): j’ai connu… nous avons connu

EXAMPLES
j’ai vécu à Paris pendant 10 ans.
I lived in Paris for 10 years.
Tom et moi avons pris le bus pour aller au musée. Nous sommes allés au restaurant
après notre visite au musée.
Tom and I took the bus to go to the museum. We went to the restaurant after our visit to the
museum.
