Henoff for bringing the threshing machine to Austin,
there and back in good condition.
I was there..., at the Thresherman’s Reunion in Austin
on Sunday, July 31, 2016 for the world record breaking antique threshing machines event with the St.
Pierre Agricultural Society in full participation!
Special recognition to all the members of our St Pierre Agriculture Society who work at promoting the
importance of agriculture in our communities:
Although some 150 machines were at the event, 139
beat the record holding 111 threshing for a solid 20
minutes, 15 minutes was the set time required to beat
the world record with both men and women forking
the stooks of wheat in the feeder. As I stood there,
watching these machines functioning at their full capacity, the dust and the straw hurling around in the wind
and reminiscing about olden days when farmers helped each other with the harvest. This was a big event
as this was « pay day » for their hard labour as it is
also today!
President, Luc Roy, Raymond Bérard, Roger Croteau, Gérald Lahaie, Gerry Michaud, Norbert Tessier
and Ron Tone.
The grain that was harvested at this event will be sold
and the monies will be split between the Manitoba
Agricultural Museum which hosted this event and the
Canadian FoodGrains Bank. The funds will be used
to help small-scale farm families in Ethiopia, Tanzania and Kenya to better provide for their families. For

Of course, this cannot happen without all the volunteers, 800 came to help out for this event from across
Canada and the United States! Our people from the St.
Pierre Agriculture Society were there after months of
planning and getting machinery ready as well as operators and workers.
This threshing gives us a glimpse of how had our ancestors worked and the conditions women also working providing meals with the help of their children;
boys fork pitching the grain stooks and the girls peeling potatoes, washing dishes and carrying lunches to
the field. Homemade bread with freshly churned butter, fresh garden vegetables, platters of roast beef and
juicy apple pies as well as Johnny Cakes baked in the
old wood stove with temperatures soaring to the mid
thirties were thoroughly enjoyed by the working
crews of men.
A special thank you to Luc Catellier for spearheading
our contribution for this spectacular event as well as
Raymond Bérard, Henri Bérard, Gérald Lahaie, Norbert Tessier, all from St-Pierre-Jolys and also Chris
Derbowka from Dufrost who were on hand forking
stooks of wheat and monitoring the work load.
This is the way it was then and where would we be
today if it wasn’t for our farmers who produce grains,
vegetables and dairy for our daily blessings of an
abundant food supply in our country?
Also present and helping out the Portage La Prairie
Threshing machine were Marcelle and Robert Lahaie
from St-Pierre-Jolys and Renée and Maurice Laroche
from Otterburne. Roger Croteau from St-Pierre-Jolys
was also involved but was unable to attend.

L’épluchette Maison Goulet The Annual Free Corn Roast will be held at the Maison Goulet located on the grounds of the St
Pierre Museum, Saturday, September 10 in the afternoon from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. The traditional King and Queen Quest will be held as
well as entertainment. A ribbon cutting ceremony will also be held at 6 p.m. for the official opening of the new summer kitchen.

Annual Agricultural Exhibition
The Annual St. Pierre Agricultural Exhibition was
held at the Cabane à sucre, 432 Joubert Street in StPierre-Jolys. Many individuals participated in the exhibition. There was a great variety of displays in different categories. As a visitor, I greatly appreciated
the effort and pride taken to display what they grew,
what they baked, what they created and so on! The
judging requires an attention to details and an appreciation of the the object presented. We recognize
their time and efforts.

interest in agriculture, gardens, home crafts and an
interest in the planning of the next exhibition and
