On behalf of the New Brunswick Police
Association, I am very pleased to be able
to introduce the New Brunswick Police
Association’s 27th Annual Crime
Prevention Guide, focusing this year on
the topic of Family Violence Awareness.
This publication strives to educate and
bring to light topics that are more often
than not swept under a rug.
Thanks to the contributions and support
of numerous individuals, businesses and
organizations throughout the province,
we are able to offer this publication as a
means to say, enough is enough.
Together, we can become an educated
community that works together to
prevent Family Violence.

concerns. This 27th Annual NBPA Crime
Prevention Guide focuses on Family
Violence Awareness, designed to help
educate and promote the public’s role in
identifying and reporting potential Child
and Spousal Abuse. This is a serious
concern for all New Brunswickers.
This Annual Community Guide is made
possible as a result of financial
contributions from residents and
business representatives throughout the
province. With their generous support,
the members of New Brunswick Police
Association are able to give back to their
communities through donations to
various local charities and youthoriented programs.

Benefit Hockey de bienfaisance
Moncton - December 11, 2014 / le 11 décembre 2014
The New Brunswick Police Association hosted their 20th
Annual Benefit Hockey Game, featuring the Maritime AllStars. The game was a tremendous success again with
proceeds raised for the community activities of the NB
Police Association, including a generous game-night
donation of $10,000 to Food Depot Alimentaire,
Southeastern New Brunswick’s Food Distribution Centre,
presented in memory of Moncton’s fallen RCMP officers
who were killed in the line of duty in June 2014.

The Bathurst Police Force would like to
thank its community and all the partners
who worked beside us throughout this past
year on Family Violence issues. Family
Violence is a serious matter and affects a
lot of people surrounding those events.
From social services, family services,
victim services and mental health
department, we all come together in a time
of need for the families involved and try to
help those who need these services to cope
with the hardships that come with family
violence.
Whenever a family is faced with such an
event, it not only affects them, but their
relatives, their co-workers, the children’s
friends and members of the community.
This is why several partners working with
the Bathurst Police Force have worked on
public education and developing tools and
services to help reduce the amount of
incidents taking place and then reducing
the amount of re-occurrences afterwards.
We
are
very
thankful
and
appreciate the hard
work from these
partnerships and
look
forward
working with them
and
our
community in the
future.

remercier sa communauté et tous les
partenaires qui ont travaillé à nos côtés
tout au long de l'année écoulée sur les
questions de violence familiale. La
violence familiale est une affaire sérieuse
et affecte beaucoup de gens autour de ces
événements. Des services sociaux, services
à la famille, services aux victimes et
département de la santé mentale, nous
venons tous ensemble dans un moment de
nécessité pour les familles concernées et
essayons d'aider ceux qui ont besoin de
ces services pour faire face aux difficultés
qui viennent avec la violence familiale.
Chaque fois qu'une famille est confrontée
à un tel événement, non seulement ceci les
affecte, mais aussi leurs parents, leurs
collègues, les amis des enfants et des
membres de la communauté. C’est
pourquoi plusieurs partenaires travaillant
avec la Force de police de Bathurst ont
travaillé sur l'éducation du public et
développé des outils et services pour aider
à réduire le nombre d'incidents qui ont
lieu, puis réduire la quantité de réoccurrences qui pourraient suivre.
Nous sommes très reconnaissants et
apprécions le travail acharné de ces
partenariats et nous sommes impatients de
travailler avec eux et notre communauté à
l'avenir.

Sexting program
The public health nurses of the Vitality Network area 4 launched the
awareness campaign on the consequences of sexting titled “Think
before you sending or sharing” in 2014.
Different scenarios on Internet Safety were led by students and
presented in schools of the DSFNO (North West Francophone School
District) with the help of a social worker, a community police officer
and a public health nurse.

Différentes mises en situation portant sur la sécurité Internet ont été animées par des élèves et présentées dans les écoles du
DSFNO (district scolaire francophone du nord-ouest) avec la collaboration d'un travailleur social, d'un policier communautaire et
d'une infirmière en santé publique.

Although there is no section in the Criminal Code of
Canada pertaining to Family Violence, police can lay
charges against people that commit offences such as:
Bien qu’il n’existe pas de section dans le Code criminel

Assault, Section 266 Criminal Code of Canada
A person commits an assault when:
• without the consent of another person, he or she
applies force intentionally to the other person
directly or indirectly
• attempts or threatens, by an act or gesture to apply
force on another person
• while openly carrying a weapon or other method of
intimidation confronts or obstructs another person
The maximum punishment for Assault is 5 years
imprisonment. And the maximum punishment for
Assault Causing Bodily Harm is 10 years
imprisonment.
Uttering Threats, Section 264.1 Criminal Code of
Canada
Everyone commits an offence who, in any manner,
knowingly utters, or causes any person to receive a
threat to:
• cause death/bodily harm
• burn/destroy/damage personal property
• to kill/injure an animal that’s the property of that
person
The maximum punishment for Uttering Threats is 5
years imprisonment.

Family Violence is still very much present in today’s
society. It is often a tabu subject that victims are afraid
to report. There are several resources available to
victims, such as Victim Services, Social Services,
School Guidance Counselors and the police. If you are
a victim of Family Violence, please ask for help.

We are committed to educating the public about the
warning signs and working with local organizations to
help the victims and their families.

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Carleton-York – in partnership with the Woodstock Police Force and the Woodstock
Fire Department – hosted a Kids-n-Kops day on Wednesday, July 9/14. The program is designed to allow
unmatched children in the Big Brothers Big Sisters program and police officers to interact in a positive and
meaningful way. The Kids-n-Kops program’s goals are to promote trust between law enforcement and children,
foster a realistic concept of police officers, provide increased service to the children on the agency’s waiting list
for the Big Brother or Big Sister, and provide contact with adult role models.

WHAT IS FAMILY VIOLENCE?
Family violence is any form of abuse or
neglect that a child or adult experiences from
a family member, or from someone with
whom they have an intimate relationship. It is
an abuse of power by one person to hurt and
control someone who trusts and depends on
them.
Examples of family violence:
All family violence is wrong. Some of it is
against the law.
•elder abuse and neglect
Many terms with similar meanings
The different terms used for family violence
can have slightly different meanings
depending on where and how they are used,
such as in a courtroom or a hospital. For
example, domestic violence can sometimes
mean family violence and sometimes it means
intimate partner violence. Intimate partner
violence refers to physical, sexual, or
psychological harm by a current or former
partner or spouse and can also be called
dating violence between couples who are not
married. The terms violence against women
and gender-based violence are also used.
Child abuse is sometimes called child
maltreatment or neglect, and elder abuse is
sometimes referred to as neglect.
Family violence affects Canadians in all types
of families and relationships-no matter how old
they are, where they live, or how much
money, education or type of job they have. It
can affect people of every race, religion and
sexual orientation.

•early and forced marriage, and "honour"related violence
•female genital mutilation
Some common forms of family violence
include:
Physical abuse—physical injury or death of a
family member or intimate partner caused
when someone:
•pushes, shoves, hits, slaps or kicks
•pinches or punches
•strangles or chokes
•stabs or cuts
•hoots
•throws objects
•burns
•holds someone down for another person to
assault
•locks someone in a room or ties them down
Violence can happen between anyone in a
family or in a close intimate relationship (e.g.,
boyfriend, girlfriend or fiancée), including
children, parents, grandparents, siblings,
intimate partners and extended family—like
uncles or step-parents. It can happen in
opposite sex and same-sex couples.

Sexual abuse—forced sexual activity on a
family member or intimate partner, when
someone:
Financial abuse—control, or misuse of a family
member's or intimate partner's money or
property, when someone:
•touches another in a sexual way without
consent
•takes another person's money or property
without permission
•prevents a person from going to work or
otherwise obtaining money or other
resources
•withholds or limits money
•pressures a person to sign documents
•forces a person to sell things or change a will
•has any sexual activity without consent
•continues sexual activity when asked to stop
•forces another to commit

Sexual abuse can also happen in intimate
partner relationships. Even if you are married
or engaged, your partner cannot force you to
have sex.
Children under the age of 16 cannot give
informed consent, so any sexual contact
between an adult and a child is a crime.
Children under the age of 18 cannot legally
give consent to sexual activity that exploits
them.
Emotional or psycho-social abuse—words or
actions to control or frighten a family member
or intimate partner, or destroy their selfrespect, when someone:
•makes threats
•intimidates or bullies
•puts down, insults or calls a person names
•yells or criticizes all the time
•isolates a person from friends and family
•destroys belongings
•hurts pets
Neglect—not meeting the basic needs to
provide care for a dependent family member
or intimate partner, when someone:
•does not provide proper food, warm
clothing, health care, medication or
appropriate hygiene
•does not protect another person from
physical harm or provide proper supervision
•abandons another person

Plusieurs termes ayant un sens similaire
Les différents termes utilisés pour définir la
violence familiale peuvent avoir des sens
légèrement différents selon l’endroit et la
façon dont ils sont utilisés, comme dans une
cour ou un hôpital. Par exemple, la violence
domestique peut parfois signifier « violence
familiale », mais elle peut aussi référer à la
violence conjugale. Le terme violence
conjugale définit un préjudice physique,

de la famille ou d’un conjoint, notamment en

•prendre son argent ou ses biens sans sa
permission;
•l’empêcher de travailler ou de gagner de
l’argent;
•retenir son argent ou en limiter l’accès;
•la forcer à signer des documents;
•la forcer à vendre ses biens ou à modifier son
testament.
Un enfant âgé de moins de 16 ans ne peut
pas donner son consentement éclairé. Par
conséquent, tout contact sexuel entre un
adulte et un enfant est un crime. Un enfant de
moins de 18 ans ne peut pas légalement
consentir à une activité sexuelle qui a pour
objectif de l’exploiter.
Violence émotionnelle ou psychosociale –

WHAT PUTS FAMILIES AT RISK OF VIOLENCE
AND WHAT HELPS PROTECT THEM?
Patterns of family violence continue from one
generation to another
A child or teenager who is abused, or exposed
to intimate partner violence, is more likely to
be abused as an adult or to become an
abuser. This makes prior experience of family
violence a risk factor.
Family violence can happen in any family or
community.
Research shows that while some factors may
help protect families from violence (protective
factors), others are related to a higher risk (risk
factors).
These factors do not cause family violence;
they are related to level of risk, with exposure
to multiple risk factors making families more
vulnerable.
Strengthening
protective
factors
and
reducing risk factors that make families
vulnerable can help to prevent family
violence.
Protective and risk factors are related to family
violence at many levels-society, community,
relationship, and individual-and each level
impacts all of the others. For example:
A society's values and beliefs influence laws
and can send a message about whether or
not violence is tolerated. This message can
influence the community-level programs or
services that can help prevent or respond to
family violence. Together, society's values,
laws and community supports can impact
family relationships and individuals - both to
help people relate to each other in safe ways,
and to develop resilience to cope with difficult
or harmful situations.

VIOLENCE AU SEIN DES FAMILLES ET QUELLES
MESURES PEUVENT LES PROTÉGER?
Des tendances de violence familiale sont
observées d'une génération à l'autre.
Un enfant ou un adolescent qui subit des
mauvais traitements, ou qui est exposé à de la
violence conjugale, est plus susceptible d'être
victime de violence à l'âge adulte ou de
devenir un agresseur. La violence familiale est
donc un facteur de risque.
La violence familiale peut se produire dans
n’importe quelle famille ou communauté.
Des recherches indiquent que certains
facteurs peuvent protéger les familles de la
violence (facteurs de protection) tandis que
d’autres sont liés à un risque plus élevé
(facteurs de risque).
Ces facteurs n’entraînent pas la violence
familiale; ils sont liés au niveau de risque.
L’exposition à plusieurs facteurs de risque rend
les familles plus vulnérables.
Le fait de renforcer les facteurs de protection
et d’atténuer les facteurs de risque peut aider
à prévenir la violence familiale.
Les facteurs de protection et de risque sont liés
à la violence familiale à divers niveaux –
sociétal, communautaire, relationnel et
individuel – et chaque niveau a une incidence
sur tous les autres. Voici un exemple :
Les valeurs et les croyances d’une société ont
une incidence sur les lois et peuvent véhiculer
un message, notamment sur la tolérance à la
violence. Ce message peut avoir une
incidence sur les programmes ou les services
communautaires contribuant à prévenir la
violence familiale ou à intervenir à cet égard.
Ensemble, les valeurs de la société, la loi et le
soutien de la communauté peuvent avoir une
incidence sur les relations familiales et
individuelles et aider les gens à créer des
relations saines et à faire face à des situations
difficiles ou dangereuses.

Is someone you know being abused?
If you think that someone you know is being
abused by a family member, it is important to
act in a way that is safe and appropriate for
everyone involved.
Family violence is not a private matter

You might be concerned about getting
involved because you feel that family

Pay attention if someone...
•seems sad, withdrawn, afraid or otherwise
acts like they may be a victim of abuse.
•is unreasonably angry or aggressive.
•is nervous when a particular family member
is around.
•makes excuses for a family member's
behaviour.
•is sick or misses school or work a lot, or takes
paid or unpaid time off that seems related to
an abusive situation.
•has a change in job performance: poor
concentration,
mistakes,
slowness,
inconsistent work quality.
•tries to cover bruises.
•drinks more than usual or uses drugs.
Or if you see...
•"put downs" from one family member to
another.
•one family member doing all the talking or
dominating the conversation when the other
family member is present.
•one family member trying to keep another
What you can do
Family violence is never the victim's fault. The
most important thing that you can do is offer
your support without any blame or
judgement...
•Make sure everyone is safe - Choose a time
and place where you can have a private
conversation.
Be careful about communication-a voice
message, text or email could put someone in
danger.
Never confront an abuser or do anything that
makes you feel unsafe.
Get support for your own feelings from a friend
or professional you trust.

•Let the person be in charge - Listen
respectfully to what this person needs; don't
try to take over.
Don't give details about why you're
concerned; just say that you want to be
supportive.
If the person doesn't want to talk, say that you
are available whenever needed.
•Offer support - Before you approach the
person, find services in your area that might
help if and when they are ready:
- Don't expect to know all the answers.
- Explore options together.
- Ask direct questions like, "Do you want me to
help you find someone to talk to?" or "Do you
want to go somewhere safe?"
If a child or a young person tells you that they
are being abused
•Believe the child.
•Listen. Don't interrupt or judge.
•React calmly. Don't ask for details.
•Tell the child that the abuse is not their fault,
and that it was right to tell you.
•Write down what the child tells you in their
own words.
What to do if you suspect child abuse:
If you know a child is being sexually abused,
report it to the police immediately. In an
emergency, call 911.
Every province and territory has a law that
says that any person who believes a child is
being abused must report it. You will not get in
trouble for making a report if you have reason
to believe a child is being abused, even if it
turns out that you were wrong.
If you have questions about how to recognize
child abuse, here are some things you can do:
•Call your local child protection services.
•Talk to a nurse, social worker, doctor or
teacher.
•Call the police.
•Call the Kids' Help Line 1-800-387-KIDS (5437).

traitements;
•la personne est irrationnellement fâchée ou
agressive;
•elle est nerveuse lorsqu’un membre de la
famille en particulier est dans les parages;
•elle excuse le comportement d’un membre
de la famille;
•elle est malade ou est souvent absente de
l’école ou du travail, prends des congés
payés ou non payés qui semblent liés à une
situation de violence;
•elle est moins productive au travail, a de la
difficulté à se concentrer, fait des erreurs,
travaille lentement, produit un travail de
mauvaise qualité;
•elle tente de camoufler des ecchymoses;
•elle boit plus que d’habitude ou consomme
de la drogue.
Vous avez observé l’une des situations
suivantes :
•un membre de la famille est rabaissé par un
autre;
•un membre de la famille domine la
conversation lorsqu’un autre membre de la
famille est présent;
•un membre de la famille tente d’éloigner un
autre membre de son travail ou d’autres
activités;
•un membre de la famille agit comme si
l’autre personne lui appartenait;
•un membre de la famille appelle l’autre
personne au travail pour lui faire peur ou
l’intimider.
Ce que vous pouvez faire
La victime de violence familiale n’est jamais
fautive. La chose la plus importante que vous
pouvez faire est d’offrir votre soutien sans
blâmer qui que ce soit ou poser un jugement.
•Assurez-vous que tout le monde est en
sécurité - Choisissez un moment et un endroit
où vous pouvez avoir une conversation
privée.
Soyez prudent — un message, un texte ou un
courriel peut mettre quelqu’un en danger.
Ne confrontez jamais un agresseur ou ne

Obtenez de l’aide pour vos propres émotions

et qu'il a bien fait de venir vous parler.
•Écrivez ce que l'enfant vous rapporte dans

Que faire si vous soupçonnez qu’un enfant est
maltraité
Si l’autre personne ne veut pas parler, indiquez
que vous êtes disponible en tout temps.
Si vous savez qu’un enfant est victime de
violence
sexuelle,
communiquez
immédiatement avec la police. S’il s’agit
d’une urgence, composez le 911.
•Offrez votre soutien - Avant d’aborder
quelqu’un, trouvez les services offerts dans
votre région qui peuvent être utiles et
lorsque l’autre personne est prête :
- Ne vous attendez pas à avoir toutes les
réponses.
- Étudiez ensemble les options offertes.
- Posez des questions directes, comme : Est-ce
que tu souhaites que je t’aide à trouver
quelqu’un à qui tu peux parler? ou Veux-tu
te rendre quelque part où tu seras en
sécurité?
Si un enfant ou un jeune vous dit qu'il est
victime de mauvais traitements
•Croyez l'enfant.
•Écoutez. Ne l'interrompez pas et ne le jugez
pas.
•Réagissez calmement. Ne demandez pas de
détails.
Chaque province et territoire a adopté une loi
qui stipule que toute personne qui croit qu’un
enfant est victime de violence doit déclarer la
situation. Vous ne vous attirerez pas d’ennuis
en déclarant que vous avez des raisons de
croire qu’un enfant est maltraité, même s’il
s’avère que vous aviez tort.
Si vous avez des questions sur les façons de
reconnaître les mauvais traitements à l’égard
des enfants, voici ce que vous pouvez faire :
•communiquez avec les services locaux de
protection de l’enfance;
•parlez avec une infirmière, un travailleur
social, un médecin ou un professeur;
•appelez la police;

SOMETIMES it can be hard to tell whether or
not you or your children are being abused. This
information may help you to understand your
own situation.
All family violence is wrong. Some of it is
against the law.
Family violence is any form of abuse or
neglect that a child or adult experiences from
a family member or intimate partner
(boyfriend, girlfriend, spouse, fiancé(e). It is an
abuse of power by one person to hurt and
control someone who trusts and depends on
them.
Abuse can happen between anyone in a
family, including young children, grown
children, parents, elderly parents, siblings,
intimate partners and extended family-like
uncles or step-parents. It can happen in
opposite and same-sex couples.
Child sexual abuse - your children are taken
advantage of for sexual purposes if they
•touch someone's genitals.
let someone touch their genitals.
•have sex.
•watch others have sex or look at porn.
•take off their clothes or watch someone
undress.
•have nude photos taken.
Emotional abuse-you or your children are
•treated like a possession.
•constantly criticized and put down.
•told that you are stupid or worthless.
•ignored or neglected-or given the silent
treatment.
•threatened-someone threatens to abandon
you or leave you behind.
Examples of violence include:
Physical abuse - you or your children are
•hit, kicked, burned, pushed, choked or
punched.
•threatened-someone threatens to hurt or kill
you, your family or your pets.

La violence familiale est inacceptable.
Certains types de violence familiale
contreviennent à la loi.
La violence familiale se définit par toute forme
de mauvais traitements ou de négligence
infligée à un enfant ou à un adulte par un
membre de la famille ou un conjoint (copain,
copine, conjoint, fiancé). Il s’agit d’un abus de
pouvoir afin de contrôler ou de blesser
quelqu’un qui a confiance en l’agresseur et
qui dépend de lui.
La violence peut se produire entre n’importe
quel membre de la famille, y compris les
jeunes enfants, les enfants plus âgés, les
parents, les grands parents, les frères et sœurs,
les conjoints et les membres de la famille
élargie – comme les oncles ou les beauxparents. La violence peut se produire au sein
de couples hétérosexuelles et homosexuelles.

sexuelles en l’obligeant à faire ce qui suit :

•laisser quelqu’un lui toucher les organes

• avoir des relations sexuelles;
•regarder d’autres personnes avoir des
relations sexuelles ou regarder de la
pornographie;
•retirer ses vêtements ou regarder quelqu’un
retirer ses vêtements;
•prendre des photos de lui nu.
Exemples de violence :
Mauvais traitements physiques —Est-ce que
votre enfant ou vous-même êtes victimes de
ce qui suit?
•Frapper, frapper à coups de pied, pousser,
étrangler ou frapper à coups de poing;
•Menacer – quelqu’un menace de vous
blesser ou de vous tuer (ou de tuer votre
famille ou vos animaux domestiques).

MEN ABUSED BY WOMEN
Information Sheet
Between 1999 and 2004, more than half a million men in Canada had a female
partner who was violent toward them. The partner might have been a wife, an
ex-wife or a common-law partner. This means about six per cent of men in
intimate relationships have experienced abuse or violence from their partners.1
So what is abuse?
• Abuse in intimate relationships is a pattern of behaviours
where one partner dominates, belittles or humiliates the other.
• Abuse of men by their partners happens when the partner
uses emotional, physical, sexual or intimidation tactics. She*
does it to control the man, get her own way and prevent him
from leaving the relationship. The abused man is always
adapting his behaviour to do what his partner wants, in the
hopes of preventing further abuse.
• The primary motive for abuse is to establish and maintain
power and control over a partner. The abused partner resists
the attempts to control him. In turn, the abusive woman takes
additional steps to regain control over her partner.
• Abuse in intimate relationships is not typically an isolated
incident. Abuse happens over time. If abuse is allowed to
continue, it becomes more frequent and more severe.
Control tactics: four kinds of abuse
Often when people think about abuse, they think of emotional
abuse, physical abuse, or sexual abuse. Abuse may also include
intimidation tactics.
EMOTIONAL ABUSE TACTICS include:
• Putdowns
• Controlling finances
• Isolating her partner and restricting his freedoms
• Spiritual abuse (ridicules or insults religion or spiritual beliefs)
PHYSICAL ABUSE TACTICS include any activity that can cause
physical pain or injury.
SEXUAL ABUSE TACTICS include:
• Uses force or pressure to get her partner to have sex in a way
he does not want
• Ridicules or criticizes his performance
• Withholds affection or sex to punish him for violating her rules
INTIMIDATION TACTICS are any words or actions that the
abusive partner uses to scare her partner. For example:
destroying property, threatening, stalking or harassing.
Society’s attitudes can make it harder
Our society is beginning to recognize and study the abuse of
men by their partners. Society’s inappropriate beliefs and
attitudes about men have kept this kind of abuse hidden:
• Men are supposed to protect women
• Men don’t get pushed around by women
• Men are not supposed to hit back even when a woman is
hitting them
• Men should be able to “handle” their women
Because of these beliefs, men who are abused by female
partners may be slow to admit it. They may not want to tell
anyone. Sometimes police and other professionals may not
take the abuse seriously.
As a result, a man in an abusive relationship may have some of
these feelings:
• Afraid to tell anyone
• Depressed or humiliated
• Afraid he has failed as a lover
• Confused because sometimes she acts loving and kind
• Believes he deserved it
Ten things you can do if you are being abused
1. First, make sure you and any children are physically safe.
If you are in immediate danger, call 911.
2. Make a safety plan. If your partner has ever been violent,
the violence could happen again at any time. You will
need a safety plan so that you can get to a safe place
quickly ifnecessary. See “Safety Plan” suggestions in the
“Men Abused by Women in Intimate Relationships”
booklet, available at www.familyviolence.alberta.ca.
3. Know you are not responsible for the abuse. The abuse is the
responsibility of the person who is abusive.
4. Understand that abuse and violence will likely continue
without intervention.
5. Tell someone you trust about the abuse. Choose someone
who will believe you. Secrecy gives abuse power. Do not
give up.
6. Find out more about abuse in relationships. You are not
alone. About six per cent of Canadian men report being
abused by partners.2
7. Find out what help is available in or near your community.

8. Get professional help from a qualified counsellor.
9. Look after yourself. You are in a difficult situation that takes
energy and strength. Make time to do some things that feel
good.
10. Spend time with healthy people. Even if they cannot help
you directly, being with healthy people will remind you that
most people have kind and rewarding relationships. You
can too.

Qu’est-ce qu’un abus?

Dix choses que vous pouvez faire si vous êtes victime de
violence
1. Assurez-vous que les enfants et vous êtes en sécurité
physiquement.
Si vous êtes en danger immédiat, composez le 911.
2. Préparez un plan de sécurité. Si votre partenaire a déjà été
violent, elle pourrait l’être à n’importe quel moment. Vous
aurez besoin d’un plan de sécurité afin de vous rendre à un
endroit sécuritaire rapidement si c’est nécessaire.
3. Sachez que vous n’êtes pas responsable de l’abus. La
personne qui est abusive en est responsable.
4. Comprenez que l’abus et la violence continueront
probablement s’il n’y a pas d’intervention.
5. Parlez-en à une personne de confidence. Choisissez
quelqu’un qui vous croira. Le secret ne fait que renforcer
l’abus. N’abandonnez pas.
6. Informez-vous au sujet de la violence dans les relations. Vous
n’êtes pas seul. Environ six pour cent des hommes
canadiens déclarent avoir été abuse par un partenaire.2
7. Informez-vous au sujet de l’aide disponible dans votre
communauté. Appelez la ligne d’information sur la violence

8. Obtenez de l’aide professionnelle d’un conseiller qualifié.
9. Prenez soins de vous. Vous êtes dans une situation difficile
qui demande beaucoup d’énergie et de force. Prenez le
temps de faire des choses qui vous font sentir bien.
10.Passez du temps avec des personnes saines. Même s’ils ne
peuvent pas vous aider directement, être avec des
personnes saines vous rappellera que la plus part des gens
ont des relations amicales et enrichissantes et que vous le
pouvez aussi.

femme abusive prend des mesures supplémentaires pour

un incident isolé. L’abus arrive au fil du temps. Si on laisse
l’abus continuer, il devient plus fréquent et plus grave.
Tactiques de contrôle : quatre types d’abus
Souvent lorsque nous pensons à l’abus, nous pensons à la
violence psychologique, la violence physique, ou aux abus
sexuels. La violence peut également inclure des tactiques
d’intimidation.
Les TACTIQUES DE VIOLENCE PSYCHOLOGIQUES comprennent :
• Dénigrements
• Contrôle des finances
• Isoler son partenaire et restreindre ses libertés
• Violence spirituelle (ridiculiser ou injurier la religion ou les
croyances spirituelles)
Les TACTIQUES DE VIOLENCE PHYSIQUE incluent toute activité

Notre société commence à reconnaitre et étudier l’abus des
hommes par leurs partenaires. Les croyances et les attitudes
inappropriées de la société à l’égard des hommes font en sorte
que ce genre d’abus reste caché :
• Les hommes sont censés protéger les femmes
•Les hommes ne se font pas marcher sur les pieds par les
femmes
• Les hommes ne sont pas censés frapper une femme, même
lorsque celle-ci l’a frappé.

The cost of family violence on victims
According to 2012 study,
"Victim costs ($6.0 billion/year) accounted for
the largest proportion (80.7%) of the total
economic impact for cost items such as medical
attention, lost wages, lost education, the value
of stolen/damaged property, and pain and
suffering."
Family violence has high costs for Canadian
society —to the health and justice systems,
employers and businesses, social and
community services, and to families and people
themselves.
Although studies on the economic impact of
violence can be difficult to compare—since
costs are considered and calculated
differently—results all indicate that these costs
are significant and are not going down.
Researchers consider these costs to be underestimated because it is challenging to account

Coûts de la violence familiale pour les victimes
Selon une étude réalisée en 2012 :
« les coûts subis par les victimes (6 milliards de
dollars par année) représentaient la proportion
la plus importante (80,7 %) de l’incidence
économique totale, pour des éléments de coût
comme la consultation d’un médecin, la
rémunération perdue, la formation perdue, la
valeur des biens volés ou endommagés et les
douleurs et souffrances subies. »
La violence familiale coûte cher à la société
canadienne, aux systèmes de santé et de
justice, aux employeurs et aux entreprises, aux
organismes offrant des services sociaux et
communautaires ainsi qu’aux familles et aux
personnes qui en sont victimes.
Bien que les études sur l’incidence économique
de la violence peuvent être difficiles à comparer
— puisque les coûts sont pris en compte et
calculés différemment — les résultats indiquent
que les coûts sont importants et n’ont pas
tendance à diminuer. Selon les chercheurs, ces
coûts sont sous-estimés puisqu’il est difficile de
tenir compte de tous les coûts publics, privés et
individuels associés à la violence familiale.
Malgré les différences observées entre les
diverses méthodes, il est évident que les coûts
associés à la violence familiale demeurent
importants.

coûts liés aux divers aspects de la violence
familiale sont estimés dans les rapports.

TRANSITION HOUSES/SHELTERS
A transition house is a safe place for abused
women and their children to get away from
abuse at home. The staff at the transition
house can provide counselling and give her
information about legal options and social
services. Transition houses are open 24 hours
every day, seven days a week. An abused
woman and her children can stay there free
of charge for about one month.
Staff at the transition house can help her
through a time of crisis. She can call the
transition house and get advice, support and
referrals over the phone even if she does not
plan to go there. They do not need to know
her name. Also most shelters will schedule
appointments for women who just need to
come in and talk. Anyone can call a shelter to
get information - male and female. If you are
a supporter, relative, friend, co-worker, or
even supervisor of someone you feel is in a
dangerous situation and you don’t know how
to be helpful, you can call your shelter and
explain what your concerns are and they can
help you come up with the best response
possible - even if you want to remain
anonymous. Shelters also provide education
to their local community, so if you would like to
learn more, contact them directly to arrange
a presentation.

Une maison de transition est un endroit sûr
pour les femmes violentées et leurs enfants qui
veulent s’éloigner de la violence à la maison.
Le personnel de la maison de transition peut
fournir des conseils et donner des informations
sur les options juridiques et les services sociaux.
Les maisons de transitions sont ouvertes 24
heures par jour, sept jours par semaine. Une
femme maltraitée et ses enfants peuvent y
rester gratuitement pendant environ un mois.
Le personnel de la maison de transition peut
vous aider à traverser une période de crise.
Vous pouvez appeler la maison de transition
et obtenir des conseils, du soutien et des
références par téléphone, même si vous
n’avez pas l’intention d’y aller. Ils n’ont pas
besoin de connaitre votre nom. La plupart des
refuges fixeront un rendez-vous avec les
personnes qui ont besoin de parler. N’importe
qui peut appeler un refuge pour obtenir des
informations, que vous soyez un homme ou
une femme. Si vous connaissez quelqu’un
dans une situation dangereuse et vous ne
savez pas comment être utile, appelez le
refuge et expliquez leur quelles sont vos
préoccupations et ils vous aideront à trouver
la meilleure solution, même si vous voulez
rester anonyme. Les refuges travaillent à
sensibiliser leur communauté locale, si vous
souhaitez en savoir plus, contactez-les
directement pour organiser une présentation.
