This annual event, organised for associations based in Cahors, took place on
29 September, unfortunately under grey skies and rain.
The visitors to our stand, who included the Mayor of Cahors, were particularly
interested in the English Language workshops, which are now full, and in
Norma Atherton’s Best British biscuits, none of which were left by the end of the
afternoon!
Representing the FGB on the stand were Neville Atherton, Patricia Barker,
Mireille Chauzit, Diana Colby and Charles Eugster.

VOLUNTEER NEEDED / APPEL A VOLONTAIRE
We are looking for a volunteer to join the language workshop administrative team. This would involve helping with
workshop administration and publicity, liaison with the
facilitators and the annual lunch and Vin d’Honneur. This
commitment would average 1 or 2 hours a week.
You should have some basic competence in both French
and English and have access to a computer and the
internet.
If you would like to volunteer for this work, please contact
Richard Lee, the atelier coordinator.
Nous recherchons un bénévole qui puisse s’intégrer dans
l’équipe administrative des ateliers de langue.
Cela consisterait dans les tâches administratives et la
publicité, en liaison avec les animateurs, à organiser les
événements annuels tels que le vin d’honneur et le
déjeuner des ateliers de langue. Il s’agirait d’un travail de
1 ou 2 heures en moyenne par semaine.
La personne volontaire doit posséder une certaine
compétence à la fois en français et en anglais et avoir

Anyone visiting the library over the summer will have appreciated the work that has gone into creating a fresh environment. Almost all surplus books have been donated or
sold and shelves are well labelled and easy to negotiate.

Once again healthy finances have enabled us to purchase
14 tremendously exciting new titles. All these were chosen
by members and added to the shelves in September. To

FGB member Marie-José Haro has chosen a famous Ealing
comedy as the focus for her Film Appreciation talk. Made
in1949, ‘Kind Hearts and Coronets’ is “A hilarious study in
the gentle art of murder” and stars Alec Guinness and Dennis
Price.
After a showing of the film (in English with French sub-titles,
142 mins.) Marie-José will discuss the making of the film
and the director’s and actors’ work, with behind-the-scenes
anecdotes. The talk will be in both languages.
There will then be time for questions and comments from
the audience. Refreshments will be served afterwards.

Membre FGB, Marie-José Haro a choisi une comédie
britannique comme objectif pour sa conférence bilingue
sur la critique de film. Tourné en 1949, avec Alec Guinness
et Dennis Price comme vedettes, ‘Noblesse Oblige’ est
« Une étude hilarante du noble art du meutre ».
Après la projection de ce film (en VO avec sous-titrage
français ; 142 minutes) Marie-José nous parlera de son
tournage et de l’art du metteur en scène et des acteurs
avec quelques anecdotes venues des coulisses.
Il y aura du temps pour poser des questions ou faire des
commentaires. Un goûter sera servi après.

Cette conférence, en langue anglaise, s’adresse aux
problèmes auxquels les étrangers venus vivre en France
se trouvent confrontés, dans les domaines de la
transmission, la perte d’autonomie et la santé.
Naturellement nos membres Français seront les bienvenus
aussi, si cela les intéresse. Nous voudrions avoir vos
questions à l’avance auxquels Sophie vous répondra en
français. Veuillez les indiquer sur papier libre quand vous
envoyez votre c-r, qui doit arriver avant le 10 février.
Sophie Tweed, a specialist in healthcare, life insurance, care
planning and personal and professional wealth management has offered to speak to us about a number of topics
which may cause concern to people who have moved to
France and find that things do not necessarily work in the
same way as in their country of origin. The seminar will be in
English.
There will be time for questions and discussion before refreshments are served. To focus on your concerns it would
be helpful to have your questions in advance. Please send
them in on separate paper along with your reply-slip, which
should be returned by 10 February.
TELETHON 2012
Once again Trish Milton is helping to organise a Téléthon
fund -raising evening in the Salles des Fêtes in the village
of Cazes Mondenard, near Lauzerte.
The evening will take the form of a meal interspersed with
an auction of items and promises of services. Music will
be provided by Brian Harpwood and Mick Gardener.
If any members have any items of furniture or unwanted
gifts or a service they feel they could donate to this worthy
cause (research into children’s rare diseases) please
would you contact Trish .
Failing a donation perhaps you would like to come and
participate in this fun evening, 4 course meal with wine,
auction and music for •15. You may be helping in some
small way to save a child’s life. Why Not?!
The date for our event is Saturday 24 November at 7pm
so as not to clash with other fund raising-events for
Téléthon.

To celebrate the memory of Scotland’s national poet, Robert BURNS, the Association is organizing a BURNS SUPPER
on Friday 25th January 2013 at the “salle des fêtes” at La Rosière ( commune de Cahors ). This is the actual date of all the
celebrations taking part world wide. All the traditions will be observed. To the accompanying wail of bagpipes, the chef will
carry in a haggis, which the master of ceremonies will carve while reciting the poem ‘Ode to Haggis’. During the meal guests
can sing songs or recite their favourite poems by Burns. Please indicate on the reply slip if you would like to contribute to
the fun of the evening in this way.
There will also be Scottish dancing, with instruction given, towards the end of the evening – so please NO boots !
Naturally, since the words were written by Rabbie Burns, we will round off this sumptious evening with a rousing chorus of
“Auld Lang Syne” .

don’t forget to bring cutlery (knife, fork, spoon and teaspoon) and a soup bowl. Everything else will be provided!

Robert BURNS, le « poète – laboureur » qui vécut au dix-huitième siècle dans le Sud-Est de l’Ecosse, a écrit en dialecte
écossais des œuvres pleines de fougue. C’est une tradition écossaise de célébrer sa mémoire, chaque année, lors des
« Soupers Burns » au cours desquels, au son de la cornemuse, le chef apporte à la table une panse de brebis farcie
( haggis ) que le maître de cérémonie découpe en récitant le poème « Ode à la Haggis » . Pendant le repas, des convives
récitent ou chantent des vers des oeuvres préférées de Burns. L’assistance termine la soirée avec des danses traditionnelles
et le chant « Auld Lang Syne » ( Ce n’est qu’un au revoir ) dont les paroles sont de ce poète.
Nous vous proposons une Soirée Burns le Vendredi 25 Janvier 2013, le jour même où cette célébration aura lieu dans
beaucoup de villes dans le monde entier. Le nombre de places est limité à 50 maximum. Retournez vite le coupon –

Directions: Follow the D820 (direction Toulouse) to the last
roundabout of the commercial zone in Cahors. At this
roundabout take the first exit right (direction Agen,
Villeneuve-sur-Lot, Montcuq) and pass under the railway
bridge. Continue for 400 m and take the first right, signposted
La Rosière. Follow this road up hill for about 1km, and
you’ll find the Salle des Fêtes next to the church.
L’APPEL de MARJORIE
Marjorie’s call for help for the sub-committee worked!
A big thank-you to everyone who responded to her
article in the last bulletin and helped with the organisation of the soirée bilingue on 26 October. Many hands
make light work!
The evening was a great success. Thanks to Gérard
Hocmard, our excellent speaker, we learnt a lot about
the romantic life of Mary Queen of Scots which we
perhaps did not know. The supper after was convivial
and enjoyed by all - at least there was very little left.

L’appel de Marjorie a été entendu! Un grand merci à

proposées pour aider avec l’organisation de la soirée
bilingue du 26 octobre. Beaucoup de petites mains
allègent une lourde tâche!
Par ailleurs la soirée fut une réussite. Grâce à Gérard
Hocmard, notre excellent conférencier, nous avons
beaucoup appris sur la vie sentimentale de Marie Stuart.
Le souper qui a suivi fut très convivial et bien apprécié en définitive nous avons eu peu de restes.

FGB library. They are a great way to keep in touch with old friends, meet new ones and, of course, practise your language

Les causettes informelles au Bordeaux, qui se trouve en face du parking Place Charles de Gaulle ont lieu le premier
mercredi de chaque mois. Les horaires ont été choisis afin que l’on puisse y passer entre les visites au marché et celles
à la bibliothèque FGB. Ces causettes sont un très bon moyen de revoir les anciens amis, d’en trouver de nouveaux et,

As we have used the Chartreuse Hotel Restaurant frequently
during 2012 we thought you might like to try somewhere new
for our annual Twelfth Night Lunch. This is not very far south
from Cahors with ample parking and the upstairs restaurant
(lift available) overlooks the runway at the Aerodrome. So
come along and give this new venue a try; it has a good
reputation for its lunches. A vegetarian option is available;

On Saturday 29 September, our Association was represented at the Maison des Associations’ Open
Day at the Espace Clément Marot. Thanks to Charles Eugster and all the volunteers who proved
that France-Grande Bretagne is very much a part of the fabric of community life of Cahors.
The language ateliers are running at full strength and despite a few small adjustments that had to
be made at the start, I am convinced that the participants (over 100) derive great benefit from them.
The end of the year is approaching fast! The rain and wind have already arrived; winter will be here
in a few weeks. But true friendship does not freeze in winter! The Activities sub-committee has put
together another interesting programme of events for you. Don’t hesitate to join in these meetings
and activities.
To close, I invite you to find out who is the author of the following phrase: ‘Blow, blow thou winter
wind, thou art not so unkind as man’s ingratitude.’

Le Samedi 29 Septembre dernier, notre Association était présente à la journée ‘Portes Ouvertes’
qui s’est déroulée à l’Espace Clément Marot. Merci à Charles Eugster et aux bénévoles qui ont
démontré que France-Grande Bretagne était bien vivante dans le tissu associatif cadurcien.
Les ateliers de langue tournent à plein régime et malgré quelques petits réglages inévitables au
démarrage, je suis convaincu que les participants (plus de 100) en retireront de fructueux
bénéfices.
La fin de l’année approche à grands pas ! La pluie, le vent sont déjà au rendez-vous ; l’hiver sera
là dans quelques semaines. Mais la véritable amitié ne gèle pas en hiver ! La sous-commission
‘activités’ vous propose un nouveau programme toujours aussi intéressant. N’hésitez pas à
participer aux réunions, spectacles ou animations.
Pour terminer mon propos, je vous invite à chercher l’auteur de la phrase suivante :

Comme tous les ans, c’est bientôt la période des fêtes et
le moment de notre sortie shopping à Toulouse.
Arrivés à l’heure du repas, nous aurons l’après-midi et le
début de la soirée pour faire nos achats. Après avoir
parcouru les boutiques, nous visiterons le Marché de Noël
place du Capitole. Des centaines de chalets concurrents,
comme en Allemagne et en Belgique, proposent de goûter
des châtaignes grillées, du vin chaud et abondance de
cadeaux pour vos présents. Au crépuscule, la place se
transforme en contes de fées avec ses illuminations.
Le car partira de Toulouse vers 19h00. Le coût du voyage
de 19 • nécessite d’être au moins 28. Amenez vos amis,
sortie bon marché, pas de problèmes d’embouteillage et
de parkings, aussi venez et commencez vos fêtes de fin
d’année.

It’s that time of the year so once again get into a really festive
mood with our shopping trip to Toulouse.
Arriving lunch time, you will have the afternoon and early
evening to get those special purchases. After browsing the
shops visit The Christmas Market in the Place du Capitole.
This rivals any seen in Germany or Belgium with a hundred
chalets offering tastings including grilled chestnuts and
mulled wine, with gifts galore to choose from for those
présents which are just that little bit different. At dusk the
area becomes a fairytale scene with Christmas Lights.
The coach will leave Toulouse at about 19h00 and should
be back in Cahors about 21h00. We need 28 people to
keep the cost at •19. Bring your friends, keep the cost of the
coach low, no driving in the traffic, no parking problems, so
come and make a start with your festive célébrations.

LUNCH AT THE ECOLE DES METIERS, CAHORS

Once again, Muriel Belou, English teacher at the Ecole des Métiers (Apprentice School) in Cahors, has invited native
English-speaking members of FGB to help young trainee waiters and witresses practise their English while they serve us
a delicious lunch. This has become a regular feature on our programme. It provides the opportunity for us to give a little
back to the community that has accepted us and the atmosphere is great.
As usual, the price and menu will not be fixed until closer to the time. Last year’s meal was under 20 euros a head and for
that we had four courses with apéritif, wine and coffee included - it’s always excellent value.
Numbers are limited to about 20 people,so please e-mail Angela [email protected] to register your interest in this event
before 3 December. Directions to the school will be sent to those attending.
