Jill Baroff is interested in the complex processes of transferring into drawings the data gathered through systematic observations of tidal change over a period of time. The tide tables used by sailors consist of numbers which represent the water level at high and low tides for each day of the year. The series she has been working on since 2002, Tide Drawings, Protocols of Time, are the recordings of ephemeral processes, mappings of time and geography not usually visible to us. Anna Bariball’s practice explores and depicts the accretion of time – from the length of time it takes for a candle to burn down to the repetitious activity of taking graphite rubbings from objects that bare the traces of their use or function. A recent floor piece made of leaf shapes cut from second hand curtains is imbued with a sense of the fabric`s past as well as the association of the theme with seasonal change and decay. Her work is based on minimal interactions with objects and often treads between the parallel languages of drawing and sculpture. Vanessa Billy Née en 1978 à Genève Vit et travaille à Londres et à Genève Expositions personnelles récentes / Selected solo shows / Jüngste Einzelausstellungen 2008 Solo presentation with BolteLang, Kunst 08 Zürich Flexible Values, Limoncello, London Empty Centres, with Pamela Rosenkranz, BolteLang, Zürich 2006 Wet and dry practice, The Hex, London Expositions collectives récentes / Selected group shows / Jüngste Gruppenausstellungen 2008 100 Years, 100 Artists, 100 Works of Art, A Foundation, Art on the Underground commission, Londres Weight-sharing, Limoncello, Londres The Long Take, MOOT, Nottingham Double Object, curated by Leigh Robb, Occasionals, Londres Paper, curated by Rochelle Fry, Five Years, Londres ARTfutures, Bloomberg SPACE, Londres Blackwater, Espace Bellevaux, Lausanne La démarche de Vanessa Billy s’établit à partir d’un processus d’accumulation intuitive et continue d’objets sources. Vanessa Billy’s practice is driven by a process of intuitive and continual gathering of source material. Her installations reveal the arbitrariness with which materials are ascribed value. She prefers the cheap to the precious, the discarded to the expensive. She is interested less in the transformation of found objects into art than in what lies at the core of the shortlived and coincidental in these materials. There clings to Billy`s objects the memory of an earlier existence, the combination of very different materials creating constant shifts between the periods of time they are associated with. Pascal Danz’s aim to „paint what I can't see, the gap between the depicted and the thought“ is followed in a series of work based on the nuclear tests that were carried out in the Nevada desert in the 1960s. The large format diptych Hardtack (Nuclear Step) (2008) freezes two moments in which soldiers retreat backwards into a bunker to flee the effects of the atom bomb. The minute difference between the two paintings records this movement, as well as the light that obliterates and dissolves the figures. BRMC (2007) similarly presents the same image separated by a second, in this case, of a rock musician performing at a concert. Hans Peter Feldmann’s work, Porträt, documents the life of a woman who donated her entire collection of personal snapshots to the artist. Soberly and without additional comment, Feldmann invites the viewer to move through the minute changes and ageing process in a life which is unspectacular but nonetheless moving precisely because its banality is shared with us and inevitably reflects the rhythms and structures of our own existence. Schirin Kretschmann’s conceptual and highly sensual practice is based on subtle transformations, both in terms of the displacement of found materials and the insertion of new, site-specific installations into art and other spaces. She frequently makes installations that change and eventually disappear during the course of the exhibition. In Solo hoy (manana tambien) (2007) for example, bags filled with ice melted, the coloured liquid flowing and drying according to the conditions of the floor in the exhibition space. Christelle Lheureux (France, 1972) experiments with the strategies of the remake, the double and rupture that allow her to dissociate the image from the mechanics of production. Non ricordo il titolo (I forgot the title) (2008), a black and white video was shot on the romantic island of Stromboli with professional look-alikes of Ingrid Bergman and Marcello Mastroianni. The title pays homage to early masters of the cinema but also echoes the semi-unconscious fantasy that weaves through the work, leaving the spectator in limbo between dream and fable, memory and oblivion, past and present. Johannes Maier intervenes in the making and dissemination of images. In The Editor`s Cut (2004) he turns the camera on the professionals who normally stand behind it. In a BBC editing suite Maier works with a news editor and a writer as they make a news clip, but he then creates a kind of semiotic static in the usually seamless flow of TV images as the footage doubles back on itself, the camera catching the men watching themselves on multiple TV monitors while on the soundtrack we hear the studio chat. Susan Morris Née en 1962 au Royaume-Uni Vit et travaille à Londres Exposition personnelle / Solo show / Jüngste Einzelausstellung 2006 Always on My Mind, Platform Gallery, Londres Expositions collectives récentes/ Selected group shows / Jüngste Gruppenausstellungen 2008 Academics Find Formula for 14 Extra Years of Life, public artwork, Clockwork Gallery, Berlin Betsey’s Salon, presentation of video work to live audience Honey Honig, AutoItalia, Londres Underwood, Ballhaus Ost, Berlin 2007 Video Art Festival, Prague Our Period, Five Years, Londres Viva Exhibition (for PhD), Central St Martins College, University of the Arts, Londres Susan Morris recoupe des informations provenant d’agendas, de talons de chéquiers, de documents médicaux… et en dresse la carte sur des agendas annuels. Susan Morris collates information from notes in diaries, chequebook stubs or medical records etc., and maps them onto year planners. The data gathered, reduced to a simple transcription, drawing or chart, records incidences of repetitive, cyclical and often mundane behaviour such as spending patterns, periods of hypochondria or visits to the hairdresser. In this way the resulting screenprints could be thought of as being like body casts, or auto-portraits, their patterns dictated more by unconscious behaviour than by an organising, centred self. Sophy Rickett’s work explores the tension between the narrative tendencies and the abstract possibilities of photography. In 2007 she completed her first film work, Auditorium in collaboration with a leading contemporary composer and Glyndebourne Opera House. Shot entirely in that location, it is an almost abstract film about the passage of light through the opera house. Focusing on behind-the-scenes areas and hidden details, it becomes a work about layers of history - the passage of light as a measure of time. The mundanity of time passing is the subject of Perry Roberts’s 24 Hour Paintings (1994/95) which elegantly record incidental daylight from different times of day in subtly hued variegations of beige gesso and acrylic. Roberts’s more recent series of videos feature buildings erected in Birmingham in the 1960s and 70s that have gridded, abstract textures due to the nature of their prefabricated construction. Using digital time-lapse photography, Roberts recorded the passage of sunlight over their external surfaces, highlights and shadows shifting around the patterns of this local urban fabric. Roberts reminds us that time passes – that, in fact, everything on Earth is a sundial. The temporal process in Patrick Rohner’s paintings is visible in the edges of the work, like the rings of a tree or geological strata. The layers that Rohner builds up over weeks and months trace the act of painting, the thickness of the pigment acquiring its own tactile appeal. It is impossible to assign a beginning or an end to the almost animated substance of his work for dripping, sliding, shifting layers of paint rip apart or cover up portions of underlying layers, while elsewhere the topmost membrane appears smooth and unimpaired. Dunja Herzog’s work is built around two fundamental features: on the one hand an interest in materially oriented work within specific spatial situations, on the other hand an interest with the subject “Africa”. Dichotomy, craft, material as an information carrier, historical references and socio-political issues on a global scale may serve as key words to describe her work.
