to customer needs.
knowledge
The Timken Company is more than a leading global
manufacturer of bearings and steel; our engineers provide
specialized friction-management solutions and offer
creative ways to enhance the performance and reliability of
wind energy components. The foundation of our success is
world-class research and development. Leveraging that
expertise, Timken is well positioned to help you effectively
design and maintain gear boxes, power trains and turbines.
Timken offers comprehensive product knowledge in all bearing types. We are the world’s largest
manufacturer of tapered roller bearings and the third-largest producer of all bearing types. With the 2003
acquisition of The Torrington Company, another global bearing leader, Timken now offers a broader array
of product types and sizes required to serve today’s ever-changing wind energy industry.
Timken also applies its deep-rooted knowledge in steel technology to metallurgical specifications
for bearing products. We are a major producer of bearing steel, and our metallurgical knowledge is a core
competency. Timken research engineers dedicate time to steel technology, knowing that clean steel and
metallurgical composition play critical roles in overall system performance. Our steel is ladle refined to
minimize inclusions in our bearing material. When you choose a Timken® bearing, you can expect the
highest quality – starting from the raw material all the way to the finished product.
Today, we maintain 90 manufacturing plants and 10 technology centers in 28 countries. No matter
where Timken bearings are made, you are assured of receiving superior products that carry a distinguished mark of excellence. And every product we make is backed by a global sales and service network.
Timken offers engineered solutions to maximize
reliability within wind energy applications.
foundations in research
The longevity and performance of Timken wind energy products is largely based on our strengths in
research and advanced technology. Our sales and application engineers, collaborating with wind energy
design engineers, transfer this knowledge into innovative, value-added product solutions that provide
competitive advantages for our customers.
In Timken laboratories, engineers test enabling technologies related to advanced materials, raceway
surface conditioning and manufacturing to determine how these and other enhancements affect system
performance. Our technical breakthroughs include:
• Engineered surfaces – We have developed coatings and finishes that, when applied to bearing
rollers and other surface-to-surface contact areas, enhance bearing fatigue life, corrosion
resistance, speed capabilities and friction reduction.
• Debris solutions – Bearing raceways are frequently required to operate in lubricants that are
contaminated with large-particle debris emitted by gears and other sources. These large particles
dent bearing raceways and typically reduce the fatigue life of standard bearings. Timken has
developed specialized bearings that help withstand these effects to maintain gear box reliability.
• Lubrication options – Our line of single-point lubricators is available to reduce service intervals
and ensure that an adequate supply of fresh grease is delivered to the bearings at all times. A full
line of Timken grease is also available, offering a variety of consistencies and additives to suit your
specific application needs.
• Condition monitoring systems – To effectively maintain operations, Timken offers condition
monitoring devices that help indicate potential system failures before they happen.
• Timken® DuraSpexx™ Power Rating Series bearings – These bearings, manufactured using
highly refined steel, provide twice the fatigue life of normal Timken bearings, making it easier for
wind turbine design engineers to improve the power density of their projects.
Along with offering our bearing and steel products to the wind energy industry, Timken also offers a
wide range of technical services related to the design and evaluation of mechanical components,
including tribology, metrology, failure analysis, mechanical design and application testing.

innovative
advanced analysis
Through extensive research efforts, testing thousands of bearings, Timken has developed a proprietary
method of calculating bearing life, called SYSx. Using this highly advanced software, Timken engineers
work closely with wind turbine design engineers to explore the wide range of operating parameters
commonly experienced by wind turbines and to identify the optimum friction-management solutions.
With long predicted life as the industry's design requirement for bearing L10 life, applying the best
bearing analysis tools during the design phase is critically important. SYSx continues to prove itself to be
an ideal bearing program for engineers and customers who rely on it to conduct thorough analysis. SYSx
is easily applied when modeling systems and predicting performance in a variety of conditions. Using
advanced graphs and diagrams, it portrays complex duty cycles, system deflection and bearing behavior
in terms that are informative and easy to understand. Engineers can rely on SYSx results to help
optimize gear box designs, predict potential damage modes and reduce development times and costs.
At the data input stage, SYSx accommodates all bearing types and 12 types of gear designs. Users
can choose from more than 100 plots and animated graphics and performance models, including:
• Contact stress along roller-race contacts;
• System deformation;
• Rib-roller contact dimensions and locations;
• Solid views of pressure on rollers;
• Life depletion;
• Power losses; and
• Displacement of gear mesh points versus load conditions.
SYSx analysis results are based upon numerical simulation that has been generally confirmed with
experimentation – saving users time and money related to component and system development.
Timken’s SYSx system graphically displays a variety of analyses, such as system deflection and contact stress.
manufacturing excellence
Timken designs and produces many types of bearing-related products required for successful wind
energy applications, including:
• standard tapered, spherical and cylindrical roller bearings;
• tapered roller bearings for locator positions;
• large-diameter, close-coupled tapered roller bearings;
• pillow blocks;
• integrated flex pin bearings;
• precision-cut bearing retainers; and
• integrated bearings for planetary gear drives.
Every product bears the Timken name, a name synonymous with quality, reliability and precision.
Customer satisfaction drives our manufacturing processes. Timken maintains renowned manufacturing
facilities that have won awards for excellence in quality and innovative process techniques.
The company embraces Lean Manufacturing and Six Sigma principles. Six Sigma applies statistical
tools to minimize process variations. Lean Manufacturing uses tools such as set-up reduction to
eliminate waste and inefficiency. To leverage both, the company has merged these practices into a
unified program, Lean Six Sigma. This results in a strong, total-process improvement program and the
ability to compare different parts of the company consistently. This is a natural evolution of our ongoing
continuous improvement initiatives.
Which bearing style should you choose?
Timken manufactures all styles of rolling-element bearings, so we maintain an objective view
on which bearing style is optimum for a given application position. Throughout the power train,
traditional designs have incorporated cylindrical and spherical roller bearings. Recent experience
has also shown a gradual shift toward additional integration of tapered roller bearings because
of their unique ability to support radial and thrust loads in virtually any combination.
Whether specifying tapered, spherical or cylindrical bearing solutions, you can be confident
that the Timken bearing you select meets the highest industry quality standards.
customer collaboration and service
Every design, every production phase, every service call is driven by one thing: exceeding
the expectations of our customers. Timken is committed to remaining a leading supplier of
bearings and components to the wind energy industry. We continue to move outside the
realm of bearings to bring greater value to our customers.
To provide the best service in the industry, we assign customer support teams –
comprised of sales engineers, product engineers, quality specialists and customer service
liaisons – to each customer. These cross-functional teams ensure that all aspects of customer
satisfaction, from product integrity to modified designs, are managed appropriately. These
support teams also provide a small group of contacts for our customers, ensuring rapid,
consistent, personal communication.
