Explore a world of fun
Hundreds of activities to keep the mind, body
and taste buds excited at AquaVille.

Travelling around the world in a day is the
challenge for participants heading for the
Aquaville zone in World Villages.
The area to the south east of the site is
designed to give Scouts the chance to
explore the cultures, pastimes, arts, crafts
and food from countries represented at the
Jamboree, and with 300 activities to choose
from no one is likely to return to there Sub
Camps empty handed.
A large wooden model ship welcomes
Scouts to Aquaville and, after crossing a big
wooden bridge, participants have to choose
which of either the Rivers or Seas villages
they want to start at. One of the zone heads
Antti Halonen, said: “The theme basically
follows the concept of explorers in ships
discovering new territories and diverse
culture.” Fellow zone head Emma Hall
added: “Aquaville houses lots of activities
and various exhibits and costumes from
participating National Scout Organisations.
It also has physical games and activities
that the scouts can get involved in.”

a cart from pioneering materials before
being timed on a circular course. He said:
“It was very physical and exciting; our
patrol was able to work as a team and apply
our scouting skills to help us complete the
challenge.”
Wrestling and Rugby
After three rounds of Swiss wrestling,
2UZD)DODKVDLG³7KLVLVP\¿UVWDFWLYLW\LQ
Aquaville and I enjoyed it. Learning basic
judo and the discipline behind it made the
wrestling activity more fun and interesting.
I have even made friends with my sparring
partner and we will be going to the other
activities in the Seas village next.”
“This is already our third activity,” said

a game of Rugby with her patrol. “It was
great, we enjoyed the game and we have
also done some painting and making
jewellery.”
Taking photographs there was troop
leader Nikola Nesic. His Serbian troop had
been making various monster masks and
costumes from Venezuela having bounced
back from a boomerang making activity
with the Australians.

He said: “Building our own log cabin
from Finland was interesting. It was like
solving a puzzle with your patrol. It was also
challenging since we were striving to break
the current time record of 2.02 minutes. We
also went looking for gold in the American
gold rush, were cowboys to catch bulls and
played Rugby.”

Iceland conquers World Villages
The story of six Icelandic boys on a girl hunt in Aquaville.

A wooden bridge on the grass is the gateway
to Aquaville. Sub Camp Plateau is lining
up before the entrance of an enormous tent.
Some Icelandic boys are trying to avoid the
queue. In the large tent, they immediately
run to their own food stall to drink cod
liver oil, an Icelandic speciality. A lot of
food stalls are not open yet, but the boys
can make a Mexican tortilla before leaving
the tent.
Since they are from Iceland, they can’t
resist the temptation of visiting their own

can do it”, says Einar Freyr þorleifsson, one
of the boys. “The intention is to get each
other to the ground, constantly holding
your opponent’s belt.” Arnar Ulfarsson
and Jónatan Björnsson are giving it a try.
After only a minute, Arnar lifts Jónatan up
and wins. All spectators are cheering and
shouting.
In the Australian tent they study the pictures of the fauna, which starts a discussion
about whale hunting and feral cats. Not
much later the boys are passing the Belgian
tent, where some Bulgarians are dancing
a traditional dance to a Belgian folk song.
After some hesitation and encouragement,
they join in the dancing. “This was so much
fun! Tonight there is a party, and we will
probably be dancing nothing but this kind
of dance”, says Arnar afterwards.
They prove it by immediately running to
the Italian tent, where Scouts are dancing a
Tarantella. When some Polish girls arrive at
the stage as well, the Icelandic Scouts hastely
start talking in their own unintelligible
language, laughing and watching the girls.
Einar even succeeds in getting the e-mail
address of a British Girl Guide and they

Tons to do at Terra

The sounds, smells and sights make the
atmosphere electric at TerraVille, one of
the World Villages on the Jamboree site.
Inside is a mix of cultures, all with two
purposes, to entertain and teach at the same
time. Walking through the village can be
time consuming as turning each corner
appears to add more tents with further areas
to explore and new wonders to take in.
Many of the tents offer arts and crafts
and other cultural activities from the
National Scout Organisations who are at
the Jamboree. But many of them also have
mouth-watering foods for participants
to sample. The foods are often placed on
tables in a highly-decorated tent and are
temptingly arranged.Jon, a chef in one tent
said: “It’s great to see so many people all
having fun”. This was certainly true, as
everyone who left the tent, left with a warm,
content smile on their faces.
Sample a "Burns Supper"
In the Scottish Zone, participants can
try their hand at Celidh dancing, watch

and join in a sawing competition, where
Scouts have to saw through a piece of wood
as fast as they can.

a Haggis is read before participants can try

The biggest treasure of them all is at the

Park in 2005, a stained glass window was
created to commemorate the event. For this
Jamboree, four windows will be made, each
one being hand painted by participants, who

they have painted.
Sarah, 15, from Greece, who was
contributing to the window said: "It is great
to be able to leave my mark on history in
such a different way”.
One day is not enough to see even half
the tents and their contents, so a sense of
mystery to what else is still to be found
lingers on. Take some time to explore the
village and all it has to offer, it's what the
Jamboree is about – experiencing other
cultures.
“We are hungry all the time”
Three Polish Girl Scouts visit every food stall.

After the jousting display during lunch,
the World Village activities restarted.
Gosia Paszewska, Nina Lenartowicz and
Aleksandra Michta, three Polish Scouts,
are strolling in Terraville. Attracted by
seductive Indian rhythms, the girls rush to a
small stage, towards the music. The stage is

Gosia, Nina and Aleksandra dance the time
away, having a lot of fun. “Their music is so

An almost naked sumo wrestler stands
in the middle. He is only wearing a large
belt that doesn’t cover his backside, which
makes the Polish girls giggle. The wrestler
teaches the crowd some sumo terms.

amused, watching her two bungling friends.

Piotr Michta is waiting for the trio. They
are impressed by the Italian toy he has
made. In this patrol, Piotr is the only boy
amongst nine girls. “But I’m happy about
that”, he says and smiles.
The girls spent the entire morning in a
food tent, and now they’re heading for the
other one. Aleksandra explains why. “In
Poland we eat more sweets and we make
the bread ourselves. We are always hungry
here! So we visit every food stall. And we’re
learning a lot about other cultures!”
It’s steamy and hot inside the food tent
and the food mix makes the tent smell weird.
First, they visit the Sri Lankan tea stall. “We
love tea, so we bought a few tea packages
in London”, says Aleksandra. After having
tasted every Croatian, Indonesian, Turkish
and Italian dessert, they make their way out
for another (food?) adventure.

The world of traditions and foods
Wiener Kaffeehaus - Jamboree tradition since 1991.

When the Austrians were asked to introduce their country in the World Food Festival during the Korean Jamboree in 1991,
they did not want to have just a small coffeemaker somewhere in the corner. Instead,
they decided to build a coffeehouse around
the small coffeemaker. The history of the
Wiener Kaffeehaus had begun.
Austrian atmosphere and tradition
It is a Austrian custom to drink coffee
in the morning and in the afternoon. "A
coffeehouse is like a livingroom outside
of your home," says Heinz Piringer from
the Wiener Kaffeehaus. "For Austrians,
coffeehouses are what pubs are for
British."
In the Wiener Kaffeehaus, the waiters wear
RXW¿WVVLPLODUWRWKRVHZRUQE\WKHZDLWHUV
in real coffeehouses in Austria: Black pants
and white shirts. "When the Ambassador of
Austria visited the coffeehouse during the
Jamboree in Thailand, he thought that the
waiting staff was professional," Piringer
says. "He was very surprised when he learnt
that we are all Scout leaders."
In addition, the coffeehouse is decorated
with the same style as the coffeehouses in
Austria. Tables and chairs used are replicas
but the wood paneled walls are replaced
with hanging pictures of Vienna.
Sparkling water and apfelstrudels
To wash down the strong coffee, you
are served a glass of sparkling water with
it. About 2,250 litres of Austrian sparkling
water was brought to the Jamboree, and the
Wiener Kaffeehaus has already sold 1,093
cups of coffee to go with it.
In addition, 352 Apfelstrudels (sweet
apple pastries) are baked every day, and
about 200 Gugelhupts (an Austrian pound
cake) are served to accompany the coffee.
If you don't have a sweet tooth, try some of
the gulasch - a soup made of beef, onions,
red peppers and paprika powder.
Money for a good reason

If one day you decide to go to the Holland
House, you can expect not only the service
of the nice Dutch people, but also Dutch
food, drinks and souvenirs. Before going
in, you’ll see some people gathering around
some wooden planks. They are playing a
typical Dutch game called Sjoelen. Feel
free to join them and smash pieces of wood
into the little goals!
When you enter the Holland House, you
should go to the Dutchies stand and buy a
card of Dutchies to pay for all the goods
there. You can buy typical Dutch food like
stroopwafels (cookies) and poffertjes (small
pancakes). Also, there’s a stand where you
can buy Dutch souvenirs like clogs (wooden shoes). You can enjoy the things you
bought in the house’s cozy seating. Learn
something about Dutch culture by checking
out the orange list of Dutch celebrations.
There are not only Dutch staff but also
a lot of foreign visitors. One of them said,
“I really enjoyed the poffertjes,” while
his friend complimented the house on its
Dutchie system. Dutch men in the Holland
House were afraid that making people have
to buy 20 Dutchies at a time would keep
them away. Yet they they said, “The house
is typically Dutch, particularly because of
the Dutch weather here in England.”
Savor the taste of Oriental food from the
Taiwanese Food House in the Plaza, where
the menu includes Bijon (rice noodles),
lemon and herb puddings, red beans with
milk dessert, pearl milk tea and other exotic
Chinese foods.
Coordinator Dandy Wang says the
Taiwan Food House serves the needs of
Asian campers, who crave food from their
region. However, the house also gives
Scouts from around the world a chance to
taste these Chinese cooking wonders.
Normal house hours are 10:00 to 16:00
daily. As an added attraction, early visitors
can see a lively cultural dance. Make sure
you take the time to drop by and enjoy

Two Scouts per country have left the Jamboree to go to
Brownsea Island for Scouting’s Sunrise.

About three hundred Scouts left the Jamboree site early yesterday morning to travel
to Brownsea Island, the place where Baden
Powell started Scouting 100 years ago.
Having been selected to represent their
countries on the island, these Scouts are
now making close friendships and enjoying
this one-off event.
On Sunday evening they all met for
WKH ¿UVW WLPH DW D UHFHSWLRQ LQ WKH *OREDO
Development Boulevard. As they walked
in, they each shook the hand of the UK
Chief Scout, Peter Duncan, before being
split into four patrols and meeting their
subcamp leaders.
"My heart feels like up here"
In a short speech, Peter Duncan welcomed
everyone before he raised his hand above
his head and said “I don’t know about you,
but my heart feels like its up here”.
A short DVD was played which showed
activities on the island. For many of the
SDUWLFLSDQWVWKLVZDVWKH¿UVWWLPHWKH\KDG
seen what the island looked like. It was at
this point that many of them realised how
wonderful it is going to be for them to
celebrate 100 years of Scouting at the place
where it began.
One of the participants, Al Frankl, said
“I’ve been making loads of new friends and
now can’t wait to arrive on Brownsea”. Al’s
H[FLWHPHQW ZDV UHÀHFWHG LQ HYHU\ERG\¶V
faces as their smiles grew throughout the
evening.
During their three days on the island the
participants will discover the diversity of
Scouting by taking part in many activities,
including a 'time trial' across Continents
where they will learn about different Scout
music, dance, food, culture and religion as
well as a World Carnival. The organisers of
the event said: "These Scouts will represent
the hopes of the world as they show how it
is possible to live together in peace."

«C’est une bonne expérience. Je
n’ai jamais fait cela de ma vie,» raconte Quinten Schothorst, 14 ans, de
Belgique. Il s’est retrouvé suspendu
dans les airs. C’est normal, des activités cirque sont proposées sur Energie.
C’est une des cinq zones avec la relaxation, l’art, le sport et les connaissances quotidiennes. D’autres jeunes
font un volleyball assis sur une grosse
balle. Il y a aussi un golf miniature un
peu fou. La Brésilienne Lisa Sakajiri,
18 ans, a juste joué au badminton avec
son frère et deux amis : «J’avais du
temps libre, j’ai joué avec les gens de
mon groupe et c’était sympa.» Il y a
aussi une rampe de skate, ce qui réjouit
certains, comme Nicholas Harrilal,
13 ans de Trinidad et Tobago.

The original Czech tents with a wooden base keep awakening the
enthusiasm of international Scouts at the Jamboree.

The Czech “Podsada” tents
have been at international Scout

contingents.
The Podsada tents are an inYHQWLRQRIWKH&]HFK6FRXWVIURP
1913. They were born to help
their inhabitants spend up to two
month-long camps in more comIRUW ,Q WKH &]HFK ODQGV LW UDLQV
a lot even during summer, and
nights are quite cold.
