Turns out, it is not the only chemical I should have been on the look out for. 1,4 dioxane and ethylene oxide both have carcinogenic effects which have been recognized by the International Agency for Research on Cancer and their use is therefore prohibited in domestic products. Yet, these two chemicals can be found in most if not all body care products. The crazier thing to me is that, since both of these chemicals are not added to products as ingredients but they are somehow generated during the production process, they do not need to be listed in the labels. Which means that even customers such as myself who read the labels and are on the lookout for carcinogen products could be fooled. About these chemicals | 1,4-dioxane is a byproduct of a petrochemical process called ethoxylation, which involves using ethylene oxide (a known breast carcinogen) to process other chemicals in order to make them less harsh. For example, sodium laurel sulfate – notoriously harsh on the skin – is often converted to the gentler chemical sodium laureth sulfate by processing it with ethylene oxide (the “eth” denotes ethoxylation), which can result in 1,4dioxane contamination. Add to circles instagramed! This is all pretty scary. But I am pretty happy I learned more about this and I have to thank ATTITUDE for it. I received, a few weeks ago, the press release and a few products to try out of the new body care line of products called ATTITUDE from Bio-Spectra, a Canadian company based in Montreal. Bio Spectra already had a line of housecleaning products by the same name. Their organic products are all labeled “carcinogen free” and the line is extensive enough that we could all replace most of our body care products with this safe line: body lotion, shampoo, conditioner, hand soap, deodorant, shower gel, bubble bath, body bar and more. So far, I have used the following products: Soothing Body Wash (8.99$), Skin Relief & Relaxing Body Lotion (8.99$) Soothing Body & Face Bar (6.99$ for 2 bars) Source Deodorant (6.99$ I received these products a while ago and didn’t want to do a review too quickly and base it on a first impression and here’s why: body lotions, shower gel, deodorants and shampoos are products that we use everyday and most of us are set in our ways. When I first learned about Sodium Laureth Sulfate I immediately tried to change body wash but until I found a body wash that was healthy AND gave me the same things the other regular non-organic body washes were giving me, I wasn’t able to let go. So I could tell you that these products are amazing because they are carcinogen free but I know it’s not enough. These are “cosmetics”…therefore they also have to feel good. They have to be effective. And http://www.unspottedbeauty.com/2012/06/09/attitude-eco-friendly-body-care-products/ tweets! I have a million products to Page 1 of 4 Beauty Blog, Makeup Reviews, Skincare and Nails, How to Makeup | T… Unspotted Beauty | Beauty Blog, Makeup Review, Skincare and Nails after more than a month of usage I can say that yes, they are effective and they do feel good, and I will repurchase. Keep reading to know why. 14/08/2012 06:15 talk about! 4 days ago New post: Maybelline Dream Fresh 8-in-1 Beauty Balm http://t.co/nETEJvZ6 4 weeks ago brands Annabelle Avène Avon Bioderma Bailey Cosmetics Burt’s Bees Clinique CND Dermaglow Estée Lauder Eyes Lips Face / e.l.f. Guerlain Harmony Kiss My Face L’Oréal La Roche Posay Lise Watier MAC Maybelline Mèreadesso Milani The Soothing Body Wash Nacara It retails for 8.99$ for 355 mL which is comparable to the price of most “organic” labeled products and slightly more expensive than your regular Dial Body Wash. When buying organic or carcinogen free you will spend more since the reason companies use the carcinogens in the first place is to save money. This body wash smells fresh, it lathers quickly and easily, you don’t have to pour too much of it for it to lather. I do prefer a creamy consistency in my shower products and the scent is a bit too masculine for my personal taste. I usually gravitate towards the sweet smelling shower gels but I have been using this shower gel for a while and I am not unhappy with it. I will try the two other scents though to see if there’s one that appeals more to my personal scent preferences. Nailene Skin Relief & Relaxing Body Lotion Sleek Makeup It retails for 8.99$ for 355 mL as well and the bottle is extremely similar to the one of the Body Wash. This is the same line so the perfume is similar and again the texture is quite liquid and runny. I do personally prefer a cream to a lotion when it comes to moisturizing my body but I do like that it penetrates the skin quickly, does not leave behind any greasy residue and has a fresh scent. I think it is a perfect lotion for summer and, boy, am I happy I am not rubbing carcinogen chemicals in my skin every day? Yep, I am! Nip + Fab OPI Palmer’s Pupa Milano Revlon Rodial Zenmed products Blot Powder/Poudre matifiante Soothing Body & Face Bar Blush 6.99$ for 2 bars is much more than you’d ever spend on Ivory Bars but then again I would NEVER wash my face with an Ivory bar either. Let me first talk about the smell. If you are from Africa, west Africa especially, these bars will remind you of home. It smells just like our huge laundry soap bars. And forgive me but I cannot describe it. It just smells like soap. With a faint fresh scent but mainly it smells like good ol’ soap. So I was hesitant to wash my face with it and then have extremely tight skin but when I did my skin didn’t feel tight at all. It is an easy product to use and carry if you’re traveling and don’t want to have too many things in your bags (which makes the 2 in 1 shampoo and shower gel product handy as well.) Cleanser/Nettoyant Source Deodorant At 6.99$ the price is totally reasonable and, after all we’ve heard about the possible link between antiperspirants and cancer (although the FDA states that there is “no conclusive evidence” about this), trying a safer alternative sounds like a good idea. I found this product quite effective but on very hot days, you might wanna back yourself up with something with a bit more muscle, especially if you need and http://www.unspottedbeauty.com/2012/06/09/attitude-eco-friendly-body-care-products/ Bronzer Eyeliner Foundation/Fond de teint Lipliner Mascara Moisturizer/Crème hydratante Nail polish/Vernis Perfume/Parfum Sunscreen/Protection solaire Scrub/Gommage Page 2 of 4 Beauty Blog, Makeup Reviews, Skincare and Nails, How to Makeup | T… Unspotted Beauty | Beauty Blog, Makeup Review, Skincare and Nails 14/08/2012 06:15 are used to anti-perspirants. Final thoughts All in all, these are great products and knowing that a company actually makes sure we don’t get in contact with carcinogen products feels good. For all you moms out there, they have products for babies too. And I know I wouldn’t want to have my babies playing in a bubble bath full of 1,4 dioxane.
