Subodh Gupta s'est d'abord exprimé à travers la peinture avant de se consacrer à d'autres
formes d'expressions comme les installations, la vidéo, la photographie ou encore la
sculpture. Utilisant des codes et des objets propres à sa culture indienne, il les met en scène
afin d'y affirmer des positions contestataires mais toujours dans une forme poétique. Dans la
lignée du ready-made, Subodh Gupta travaille sur des objets emblématiques de la culture
indienne, de la culture du peuple, des habitudes populaires. À travers des réalisations
monumentales, les ustensiles de cuisine interrogent le sacré, la société de consommation, la
globalisation. L'artiste questionne le pouvoir des objets du quotidien comme référence
universelle, créateurs d'une identité à la fois individuelle et collective, l'objet érigé comme
symbole d'une nation, fièrement dressé pour révéler l’appartenance à un mode de vie, à une
culture.
