That excitement can be felt all around the Ottawa Public Library. September kicks off with a full slate of branch activities for kids, teens and adults, as well as system wide programs like Awesome Authors, Big Wheels and the Kid’s Lit Gala. All this activity and enthusiasm continues through October Library Month and into the holiday season, which of course brings its own excitement. Back to school is the focus of this issue of Preview and it’s our opportunity to remind parents that the library provides access to countless print and online materials, study help, and great spaces to foster learning - so make sure your child has the advantage this school year with their own library card. Photo: Couvrette/Ottawa September is a special month. Right after Labour Day you can feel the renewed excitement and fervor from both kids and adults alike as the cool weather somehow renews our interest and passion for our work. Jan Harder, Chair / présidente That library card will also work in our brand new kiosk Ottawa Public Library Board / C.A. de machines located in the foyer of the Hunt Clubla Bibliothèque publique d’Ottawa Riverside Community Centre. The only ones of their [email protected] kind in Canada, these bilingual kiosks, one for children and one for adults, are a hit in that community and offer popular, in-demand titles. Also of note, work continues on the many Infrastructure Stimulus Fund (ISF) projects for the OPL, like the recently re-opened Sunnyside branch, renovations to the Vanier, Cumberland and Alta Vista branches and the all-new Greely branch, making this a particularly exciting time for the OPL Board of Directors. More information on each of these improvements can be found in this edition of Preview. A new initiative launching this Fall is Page and Stage, the OPL’s innovative new partnership with the Great Canadian Theatre Company. OPL librarians have reviewed the scripts for the GCTC 2010-2011 season and have recommended books and films to help explore the themes and ideas raised by the featured playwrights. Check out the materials recommended by readers’ advisory librarians at www.BiblioOttawaLibrary.ca. Library Awareness Month takes place all throughout October. Needless to say, it’s my favourite month of the year! For information about the activities OPL is planning during the month, go to page 52. These upgrades will take place at the Sunnyside, Alta Vista, Vanier and Greely branches. Library Book Rate Federal private member’s bill C-509, sponsored by MP Merv Tweed from Manitoba, is crucial to protecting library services that benefits all Canadians. If the bill does not pass and Canada Post raises its rates for Library materials, the OPL could see a significant increase in expenditures. On May 10, 2010 the OPL Board unanimously supported a motion in support of continuance of the library book rate and its expansion to other media. The Board approved that the Chair of the OPL Board write a letter to Federal MP’s to support Bill C-509, an Act to amend the Canada Post Corporation Act (library materials). Kiosk Launch The launch of OPL’s first self-serve kiosk at the Riverside Hunt Club community centre was held on May 7 and was very successful. Order of Friendship Awards On June 14, 2010 the OPL Board presented the following individuals with the Ottawa Public Library Order of Friendship: Michel Lavoie, J.C. Sulzenko, Ian Roy and Brenda Chapman in recognition of outstanding volunteer assistance in serving as judges for the Awesome Authors contest, and to Lori Nash in recognition of her long time commitment to advocacy and support of the Ottawa Public Library. Vanier Branch Construction Tender Approval The Board approved that the construction contract for the Vanier Branch be awarded to Serge Zimola Construction. The purpose of this project is to make the Vanier Branch accessible through the installation of an elevator and other required renovations. This project is funded through the Federal-Provincial Infrastructure Stimulus Funding (ISF) Program. Greely Branch Construction Tender Approval The Board approved that the contract for the new Greely Branch be awarded to Magna Construction. The purpose of this project is to replace the existing 946 square foot branch, located in a former Fire Hall, with a new 3,000 square foot facility attached to the existing Greely Community Centre at 1448 Meadow Drive. This project is funded through the Federal-Provincial Infrastructure Stimulus Funding (ISF) Program. Groundbreaking ceremony for new Greely Library Branch On June 17, 2010, Nepean-Carleton MPP Lisa MacLeod joined OPL Board Chair Councillor Jan Harder, Councillor Doug Thompson and guests in celebrating the beginning of construction of a new Library branch for the community of Greely. Alta Vista Branch Construction Tender Approval The Board approved that the construction for the Alta Vista Branch be awarded to PCS General Contractors. The purpose of this project is to renovate the main floor of the branch and the meeting space in the basement. This project is being funded through the Federal-Provincial Infrastructure Stimulus Funding (ISF) Program. CLA/3M Canada Award for Achievement in Technical Services 2010 On May 17, 2010 the Ottawa Public Library (OPL) was announced as the 2010 winner of the CLA/3M Canada Award for Achievement in Technical Services, for its project “New Cataloguing Strategy for World Languages Material”. Cumberland Library Branch The newly-renovated Cumberland branch reopened to the public on June 8. On June 24, 2010, the OPL hosted a gathering to thank patrons for their patience during the renovation period. Ottawa-Orléans MP Royal Galipeau, Councillors Rob Jellett and Bob Monette, along with OPL Board Trustee Bernard Clavel, joined the community to celebrate the official reopening. I hope you had some time to relax this summer, and read plenty of books that you picked up at your local OPL branch. Now, the push is on to get the kids ready for classes – lots of preparations to take care of. Don’t forget to pack their Library cards with their school supplies! The Foundation uses the summer months to prepare as well – gearing up for the fall, and the start of another fundraising year. We’ve just completed a very important strategic planning exercise, which will help us focus our energies on those activities, which will advance our mission more effectively. For the next five years (2010 to 2015), the Ottawa Public Library Foundation will concentrate on: Raising awareness about OPL among Ottawans, and building commitment to • supporting its programs and services; Creating a Foundation that is sustainable, with policies in place, and an • infrastructure that generates greater donations; • Building our donor and contact base; • Enhancing our Board of Directors, to better respond to the needs of the OPL, and the community, and • Strengthening our partnerships with community leaders, and all of our stakeholders, including Library patrons and supporters. Armed with these strategic priorities, the Foundation hopes to encourage more people to invest in our community, by making a gift to the Library. Every dollar counts and even a small gift – when put together with other contributions – can make a huge difference. As always, we hope that you’ll continue to support the Library, through your donations and attendance at our annual literary evening in November which promises to be our best event ever. See the ad below to read more about Great Cities…Great Libraries. The goal of the campaign is to increase the number of school children with library cards. A library card opens the door to a wealth of educational resources as well as a world of discovery for children. A welcoming and inviting space that sparks the imagination and inspires learning is important to engage children. Since there isn’t always room in library budgets for children’s areas, the Friends and the Foundation work with the library to make family-friendly community gathering places. For example, we recently donated money for kid-sized tables and chairs at the Rideau branch. One of my favourite fundraising projects is the annual creation and sale of the potpourri anthology. While book sales raise money for Friends projects, an important function of the publication is to allow youth across Ottawa to expand literacy skills, explore creative writing and share diverse experiences. The 2009 edition was so successful it was recognized with an Ottawa Citizen Literacy Foundation Grant. Details on ordering your copy of pot-pourri 2010 are available on our website, www.OttawaPublicLibraryFriends.ca. Don’t forget to encourage your favourite budding writer to enter OPL’s Awesome Authors contest, sponsored by the Friends. You may see the youth’s work in the 2011 anthology! In October, before the municipal elections, watch our website for the Love our Libraries 2010 campaign. We’re working with the Foundation to tell you where candidates stand on library priorities. As you can see, there are many ways to continue supporting and enjoying the library throughout the coming months. Happy autumn reading, friends. Bonne lecture cet automne, chers amis! Since the launch of the pilot project in April, the kiosk has dispensed over 2,000 items for children and adults. Recent articles in the Ottawa Citizen and the Toronto Star highlight the OPL Kiosk as a unique way to deliver service to areas that do not have a permanent library building, and as a needed boost to promoting literacy in the community. The Toronto Public Library is considering following OPL’s lead by installing a kiosk at Union Station to serve city commuters. The Ottawa Public Library (OPL) Kiosk is a vending machine style kiosk that dispenses popular library materials to OPL cardholders and offers a convenient way to enjoy library services on the go. This innovative pilot project is located at the newlyexpanded Hunt Club/Riverside Community Centre and will be considered for implementation in other areas of the city in the future. Ce poste novateur est situé au Centre communautaire Hunt Club-Riverside récemment agrandi, et on songe à en mettre de semblables en place dans d’autres secteurs dans l’avenir. services, t a e r g f o s kind rces. up with all nline resou g o o in t t a s e s h e c ’s c ary 7a Public Libr ls, and 24/ The Ottawa asts, job-hunting too odc including p aLibrary.ca BiblioOttaw The Ottawa Public Library: IF IT’S OUT THERE, IT’S IN HERE. 8 Preview / En primeur - Fall • Automne • 2010 www.BiblioOttawaLibrary.ca • InfoService 613-580-2940 FEATURES/NOUVELLES Seniors Month Celebration Over 200 seniors attended the first Seniors Month Celebration on June 16 at Main Library. Thanks to $4.275-million in federal, provincial and municipal stimulus funding, visitors to some branches are now enjoying renovated buildings. Others are looking forward to exciting enhancements to their branches. Whether or not they are part of the stimulus funding process, future building projects will continue to be a top priority for OPL. Projects that have been completed: Cumberland branch The Cumberland branch reopened to the public June 8 and on Saturday, June 26, OPL hosted a gathering to thank patrons for their patience during the renovation period. Sunnyside branch On August 16, the Sunnyside branch reopened after a lengthy period of renovation. With the improvements completed, popular children’s programs and adult programming are in full swing in the enhanced facility. Projects underway: Greely branch Ground was broken on Tuesday, June 22 at the site of the new Greely branch. In the spring of 2011, residents of the area will be enjoying a spacious facility that will satisfy the needs of the community for years to come. Vanier branch A $0.75-million renovation of the Vanier branch began on June 28 and will be completed this Fall. The renovations, which will improve the accessibility, include a new elevator, reconfigured entranceway and improved borrower services counter. Alta Vista branch A $0.75-million renovation of most public areas of the Alta Vista branch, beginning on September 7, will include a reconfigured entranceway, expanded community meeting rooms, children’s area renovation, self-checkout service, 24/7 external book returns, a new borrower services counter and information services desk, new accessible washrooms, new flooring and repainting. Future projects: West District Library The west end of the city is a top priority to be provided a new library facility. It is recommended that a 30,000 sq ft. district library be built in the Kanata area by 2012. The future West District Library branch will be located on City of Ottawa owned property in Kanata Town Centre. 10 Preview / En primeur - Fall • Automne • 2010 www.BiblioOttawaLibrary.ca • InfoService 613-580-2940 For more information about all of the building improvements at OPL, visit: www. BiblioOttawaLibrary.ca/fr/main/about/library/new. 11 Preview / En primeur - Fall • Automne • 2010 InfoService 613-580-2940 • www.BiblioOttawaLibrary.ca PROGRAMS - EVERY CHILD READY TO READ Questions about registration?
