ENSEMBLE DE CAELIS
directed by Laurence Brisset
2015 season
ENSEMBLE DE CAELIS
Unaccompanied women’s voices, medieval music and contemporary music
Laurence Brisset, artistic director and singer.
Estelle Nadau, Florence Limon, Caroline Tarrit, Marie-George Monet, singers.
From the abyss to the stars…
The De Caelis ensemble and its artistic director Laurence Brisset are passionate
advocates of the music of the Middle Ages. Not only do they engineer unusual
musical encounters between the great composers of the past and those of
today but their insatiable curiosity also ensures that these early works once
again become part of a living creative process; the extraordinary modernity of
these ancient works is also revealed.
This year the mystical cosmic visions of Hildegard von Bingen are joined with
works by Zad Moultaka; courtly love finds its reflection in azure Persian skies;
Christmastide unfolds below starry vaults in 12th century Aquitaine; Philippe
Hersant is inspired by the Gradual of Aliénor de Bretagne, the wondrous
treasure of Fontevraud Abbey…
An invitation to dream, to venture onto the paths of the soul on a dizzying
journey inwards: the programmes of the De Caelis ensemble create links
between the centuries and transform each of their concerts into a unique
event.
De Caelis is the resident ensemble of the Abbaye aux Dames de Saintes, its
partner for their programmes Gemme and Citadel of stars.
In 2006 De Caelis began to receive support from the Ministry of Culture and Communication / DRAC
Basse-Normandie as part of their programme of assistance to established ensembles. De Caelis is also
supported by the Région Basse-Normandie, the Département de l’Orne, ADAMI, SPEDIDAM and Musique
Nouvelle en Liberté. De Caelis is also member of the FEVIS, the federation for specialist vocal and instrumental groups, the Futurs composés network and Profedim. Mécénat Musical Société Générale is the principal
sponsor of the De Caelis ensemble.

PROGRAMMES FOR 2015
Gemme
Citadel of stars
The ecstatic song of Hildegard inspires
contemporary poetry. Passing through
every layer of memory and of time,
music blazes a path through our
imagination.
Hildegard von Bingen (1098 -1179)
Zad Moultaka (1967-)
Music for Christmastide in 12th
century Aquitaine: the musical
and poetic flowering of the new
Romanesque style, dominated by the
symbolic figure of Aliénor d’Aquitaine.
From the Saint Martial de Limoges
manuscript.
Ghazal or the heart in exile
The sixteenth abbess
Two of the most refined arts of the
Middle Ages - traditional Persian song
and Western song from the 12th to
the 14th centuries - both describe
love affairs that go awry and lovers
now separated. The poems of courtly
love meet and are contrasted with
the incandescent poetry of Omar
Khayyam and of Rumî.
Taghi Akbhari, Persian song and Nader
Aghakhani, târ
A Gradual of exceptional beauty was
left to the Abbaye de Fontevraud by
Aliénor de Bretagne (1275-1342), the
sixteenth abbess. Philippe Hersant
took his inspiration from the work and
from the place and brings a breath of
contemporary air to the programme.
Graduel de Fontevraud (1250 -1260).
Philippe Hersant (1948 -), first performance at the abbey of Fontevraud in
September 2015
A large-scale version of the Ghazal will be
performed at the festival Les Détours de
Babel 2015 together with a new work by Zad
Moultaka.
You can find all of our programmes, videos
