READING COMPREHENSION: The Simpsons
Here are the Simpsons! They are an American family who live in the imaginary town of
Springfield in the U.S.A.
Homer Simpson is the father. He is 35 years old. He is married to Marge Simpson. He is her
husband.
Homer and Marge have got three children: Bart, Lisa and Maggie. Bart is their only son. He
is ten years old. He is a lazy* and naughty* boy! Lisa, their daughter, is the second child of
the family. She is 8 years old. She is a very intelligent girl and she is a vegetarian. Bart and
Lisa’s baby sister is called Maggie. She is one year old.
The Simpsons have got two pets: a dog and a cat. The dog’s name is Santa’s little
Helper and the cat’s name is Snowball 2.
Abraham and Mona are Homer’s parents. They are Bart, Lisa and Maggie’s grandparents.
Abraham -the grandfather- has got a son from his first marriage, Herb. Mona is Herb’s
stepmother. Herb is Homer’s half-brother and Bart’s uncle. Bart is Herb ’s nephew!
Jackie is Marge’s mother, Clancy’s wife and Bart’s grandmother. Jackie and Clancy have got
three daughters but no son. They have got four grandchildren, one grandson -Homer- and
three granddaughters -Lisa, Maggie and Ling.
Selma and Patty Bouvier are twin sisters. They are Bart, Lisa and Maggie’s aunts. They are
single*, but Selma’s adopted daughter, Ling, is Bart’s cousin and Homer’s niece.

 Le génitif ou cas possessif
Pour établir des liens de parenté ou de possession entre des personnes ou des choses, on peut
utiliser LE GENITIF (‘S) aussi appelé CAS POSSESSIF.
Il suffit d’ajouter ‘S entre les deux mots. Attention, l’ordre des mots est inversé par rapport
au français.
Ex: Marge is Bart’s mother.
Marge est la mère de Bart.
The children’s names are Bart, Lisa and Maggie.
Les prénoms des enfants sont Bart, Lisa et Maggie.
Si le nom se termine déjà par un ‘s’ et qu’il est pluriel, on ajoute seulement l’apostrophe.
Ex: The pets’ names are Santa’s Little Helper and Snowball 2.
Si le nom se termine déjà par un ‘s’ et qu’il est singulier, il faut quand même ajouter ‘S.
Ex: William and Harry are Prince Charles’s sons.
