La TOHU entame cette treizième saison de belle façon
en articulant son projet Cirque-Terre-Humain autour
d’un énoncé fédérateur : Côtoyer l’extraordinaire.
Ces deux mots portent la promesse de l’expérience
que vous y vivrez : un lieu d’échange et de partage axé
sur la proximité et la communauté. Un lieu qui sort
de l’ordinaire telle cette ancienne carrière appelée à
devenir un de nos plus grands parcs métropolitains.
La TOHU, un bâtiment parmi les plus écologiques
abritant une salle circulaire unique, idéale pour
l’expression des arts du cirque et la rencontre
avec le public.
TOHU begins its thirteenth season in a wonderful
way, crafting the Circus-Earth-Human project around
a unifying statement: Embrace the extraordinary.
Those words convey the promise of a great
experience: a space for gathering and sharing
focused on closeness and community. An
extraordinary space that is an old quarry soon to
become one of our greatest metropolitan parks.
TOHU, proud ecological building, is home to a
unique circular hall, ideal for circus practice
and for initiating contact with the audience.
UNE SAISON SPÉCIALE PAR BIEN DES ASPECTS
Enfin, la saison 2016-2017 marque deux anniversaires
incontournables : les 375 ans de Montréal et les
150 ans du Canada. Nous participerons aux festivités
avec l’ouverture d’une nouvelle zone du parc
métropolitain du Complexe environnemental de
Saint-Michel prévu au printemps 2017, dont la TOHU
constitue le pavillon d’entrée. À ce propos, nous vous
invitons à participer à la campagne de financement
« Entrez dans l’Buzz » si ce n’est déjà fait.

A SPECIAL SEASON FOR MANY REASONS

Our program could be described as a collection
of great shows, both for their magnitude and the
interest they spark in people. This applies to the new
Les 7 Doigts creation, Circa as well as the return of
David Dimitri. October will also be marked by the first
North American visit of Hungary-based Recirquel.
Several shows will be offered in the 360-degree hall,
including the amazing Le Vide. Our Coups de coeur
are also back for the greatest pleasure of our
audience. Fruitful partnerships, such as with
Danse Danse and Akram Khan Company’s
Until the Lions will delight by their originality.
July will be the moment for major events such as
MONTRÉAL COMPLÈTEMENT CiRQUE. The many
exhibitions will win over fans of beauty and discovery
with work that spurs escape, travel and awareness.
We also remain committed to the youth and bet
on educational programs to introduce them to
community and artistic development.

Finally, season 2016-2017 marks two not-to-bemissed anniversaries: the 375th of Montréal and
the 150th of our country. In spring 2017, we will
take part in the festivities with the opening of a new
section of the metropolitan park at the Saint-Michel

Notre programmation est placée sous le signe des
« grands spectacles », autant par leur envergure que
l’engouement qu’ils suscitent avec la nouvelle création
des 7 Doigts, de Circa et le retour de David Dimitri.
Octobre sera marqué par la venue de Recirquel de
Hongrie, pour la première fois en sol nord-américain.
Plusieurs spectacles de la programmation se
déroulent en 360 degrés, dont la performance Le Vide.
Nos Coups de cœur reviennent, pour le plus grand
bonheur de notre public. D’heureuses collaborations
réjouiront par leur originalité comme celle avec
Danse Danse autour de la création Until the Lions
d’Akram Khan Company. C’est aussi l’occasion
de grands rendez-vous comme l’incontournable
MONTRÉAL COMPLÈTEMENT CiRQUE en juillet.
Plusieurs expositions raviront les amateurs du beau et
de la découverte autour d’œuvres propices à l’évasion,
au voyage et à la sensibilisation. La jeunesse nous
tient toujours autant à cœur et nous misons à nouveau
sur des programmes éducatifs propices à leur éveil

Notre salle circulaire à 360 degrés s’inscrit dans la
plus pure tradition circassienne. Cette caractéristique

a man comes forward… and then quickly moves from tightroping,
to acrobatics, to trapezing, and even gets fired out of a real
cannon… and then transforms into an accordionist: a human
circus! Versatile and wildly talented, David Dimitri offers a
sparkling, stunt-filled and comedic show. Between moments of
tenderness and breathtaking performances, nobody can resists
this amazing multitalented artist.
Master performer, David Dimitri comes from a circus-devoted
family. He is known for his prodigious acts created for
circuses worldwide, including Cirque du Soleil and New York’s
Big Apple Circus. Following his tremendous success at
MONTRÉAL COMPLÈTEMENT CiRQUE in 2013, David Dimitri
comes back to TOHU, to everyone’s delight, and puts up his
small tent specially designed for this show.

BENCE VÁGI : La Hongrie a une grande tradition de cirque et notre
objectif consistait à trouver une façon de faire évoluer la scène
de cirque traditionnelle vers une forme plus contemporaine.
Le spectacle porte le nom de Cirkusz az éjszakában en hongrois
— qui signifie « le cirque dans la nuit » — il prend naissance au
cœur de la nuit et s’achève avec l’aube qui se lève. C’est une
métaphore sur la transformation de notre culture du cirque en
quelque chose de nouveau.
BENCE VÁGI: Hungary has a big circus tradition, and our goal
was to figure out how to move the traditional circus scene
towards a more contemporary one. The show is called Cirkusz
az éjszakában in Hungarian — which means “the circus in the
night” — because the performance begins at night and, by the
end, we’re reached the dawn of the performance. It’s a metaphor
about transforming our circus culture into something new.

TOHU : Recirquel a commencé avec un groupe de très jeunes
artistes. En quoi cela vous différencie ?
RECIRQUEL
Recirquel Company a été fondée à Budapest
en 2012 par le directeur et chorégraphe
Bence Vági, qui désire faire découvrir au
monde entier le nouveau cirque hongrois
contemporain. Parmi les autres spectacles
de Recirquel, mentionnons Non Solus, Paris de
Nuit et The Naked Clown. / Recirquel Company
was founded in Budapest in 2012 by director
and choreographer Bence Vági, who wanted to
introduce a new genre of contemporary circus
to the world. Recirquel’s other productions
include Non Solus, Paris de Nuit and
The Naked Clown.
BENCE VÁGI : Le fait d’avoir une troupe si jeune est le
changement qui nous a permis de renouveler le genre dans
notre pays, tant pour nous que pour la nouvelle génération
d’artistes circassiens. Nous voulions faire en sorte que cette
nouvelle génération puisse choisir le cirque comme forme d’art
et pas seulement comme une façon de faire de l’argent.
TOHU : Parlez-nous de votre succès en Hongrie. Comment la
troupe est-elle passée de jeune compagnie à fleuron national ?
BENCE VÁGI : Notre succès repose sur le fait que nous n’avons
pas renié nos origines circassiennes, qui remontent vers 1850.
Nous ne voulions pas nécessairement suivre d’autres cultures
de cirques contemporains. Nous voulions faire les choses à notre
façon et dire « C’est du cirque hongrois contemporain et ça n’a
pas à ressembler à aucune autre forme artistique de quelque
nationalité que ce soit. » Pas par manque de respect, mais pour
trouver notre propre langage. Au début, les spectateurs se
sont montrés sceptiques, mais nous les avons convaincus :
ils nous ont ovationnés ! La preuve de l’appréciation des gens,
c’est qu’après quelques jours, on jouait à guichets fermés.
TOHU : Votre spectacle à Montréal est une première au Québec.
Qu’est-ce qui vous réjouit le plus ?
BENCE VÁGI : Plusieurs de nos artistes à leurs débuts rêvaient de
venir à Montréal pour fouler la scène que tant de grands artistes
de cirque ont foulée, pour représenter leur propre culture du
cirque et pour entrer dans le cercle des compagnies de cirque
contemporain les plus réputées au monde. Que notre troupe
hongroise soit de la prochaine saison de la TOHU est un grand
honneur pour nous.
TOHU: Recirquel started with a really young group of performers.
How does that set you apart from other troupes?
BENCE VÁGI: Having a young troupe was a change that allowed
us to renew the circus genre in our country — for us and for the
next generation of circus artists. We wanted to open the door for
the next generation to choose circus as an art form and not just
a way to make money.

TOHU : Quelle a été votre inspiration pour la création de
Night Circus ? D’où vient le concept ?
Bence a commencé sa carrière très jeune
comme membre du collectif de danse dirigé
par le réputé chorégraphe et danseur hongrois
Endre Jeszenszky. Après des études au
Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts, il a
réalisé des productions indépendantes qui l’ont
mené aux quatre coins du globe. De retour en
Hongrie, il a mis sur pied Recirquel. Pourquoi
les arts du cirque ? « Ça doit être à cause
de toutes ces fins de semaine passées au
cirque avec ma grand-mère. » / Bence began,
at a young age, as a member of a pioneering
dance community led by famous Hungarian
choreographer and dancer Endre Jeszenszky.
He went on to study at the Liverpool Institute for
Performing Arts before creating independent
productions that took him around the world.
He eventually returned to Hungary and started
Recirquel. Why the circus arts? “It must
have been all the weekends spent with my
grandmother in the circus.”

INTERVIEW
TOHU: Tell us a little about your success in Hungary. How did you
go from a new company to a household name?
BENCE VÁGI: Our success is based on not denying our circus
culture, which has been around since the 1850s. We didn’t
necessarily want to follow other contemporary circus cultures.
We wanted to do our own thing and say “This is a contemporary
Hungarian circus, and it doesn’t want to behave like other nation’s
art forms.” Not out of disrespect, but in order to find our own
language. At first the audience was skeptical, but we convinced
them. We got standing ovations. You could tell that people liked it,
because over the next few days the box office would sell out.
TOHU: Your Montréal performance will be your first in Québec.
What are you looking forward to most?
BENCE VÁGI: Many of our artists dreamed of going to Montréal
when they started out — to stand on the stages where so many
great circus performers have stood and represent your own
circus culture, and to be with the most recognized contemporary
circuses in the world. Having our Hungarian circus company in
the new TOHU season is a big honour for us.

GYPSY SNIDER
Gypsy Snider s’est initiée au cirque dès l’âge
de quatre ans dans la compagnie de ses
parents. Formée en Suisse, elle a ensuite
rejoint différentes compagnies, dont le Cirque
du Soleil, avant de fonder Les 7 Doigts. Elle
a notamment mis en scène Loft (2002)
Traces (2006) et Intersection (2014), en plus
de nombreux spectacles à l’international. /
Gypsy Snider was introduced to the circus by
her parents at the early age of four. Trained
in Switzerland, she then joined a number of
companies, including Cirque du Soleil, before
founding Les 7 Doigts. She directed Loft (2002)
Traces (2006) and Intersection (2014), as well
as several shows throughout the world.

Le collectif créé en 2002 peut aujourd’hui
compter sur une équipe de 200 artistes,
gestionnaires et techniciens pour offrir les
1000 représentations annuelles de l’une de
leurs créations ou collaborations artistiques.
En 2017, Les 7 Doigts vont inaugurer leur
Centre de Création et de Production au cœur
du Quartier des spectacles de Montréal.

Les 7 Doigts pursues the universal, the
extraordinary, the indefinable, the deep, and
the hearth of every human being. The company
created in 2002 can today count on a team of
200 artists, six managers and technicians to
perform some 1000 creations and artistic
collaborations. In 2017, Les 7 Doigts will open
its creation and production centre right in
Montréal’s Quartier des spectacles.
TOHU : Quelle a été l’idée de départ pour le spectacle ?
TOHU: What is the idea behind the show?
GYPSY SNIDER : Que rien n’est irréversible... On peut renverser
l’histoire et les choses dans l’espoir de s’améliorer.
GYPSY SNIDER: Nothing is irreversible... We can change history
and things, in the hope of making them better.
TOHU : Qu’est-ce qui a qui a inspiré votre travail de création ?
TOHU: What inspired its creation?
GYPSY SNIDER : Nous sommes partis des images intérieures, des
impressions intimes qu’on a rarement l’occasion d’extérioriser, et
nous avons exploré le lien qui existait entre le destin de ceux qui
nous ont précédés et ce que nous sommes devenus. Certaines
parties du spectacle ont été écrites d’après l’histoire des arrièregrands-parents et grands-parents des artistes ! En conclusion,
quel que soit notre passé, on peut renverser les situations
négatives pour aller de l’avant. D’où cette idée de réversibilité.
GYPSY SNIDER: We started from inner images, intimate thoughts
that we rarely have the chance to externalize, and we have
explored the relationship between our destiny and the one of
those who have come before us. Certain parts of the show are
based on the story of great-grandparents and grandparents of
the artists! In conclusion, whatever our past, negative situations
can be changed to move forward. That’s where the concept of
reversibility comes from.
TOHU : Comment avez-vous imagé ce concept sur scène ?
TOHU: How did you come up with this concept on stage?
GYPSY SNIDER : L’idée du mur, ce qui se passe devant et derrière
ce dernier. Sur scène, trois murs mobiles définissent les espaces
que les artistes explorent, font bouger, font exploser. En les
plaçant dans des situations particulières, différentes formes
artistiques jaillissent.
GYPSY SNIDER: The idea of a wall, and what goes on in front and
behind it. On stage, three mobile walls outline the spaces which
are explored, moved around, blown up by the artists. Different art
forms arise by putting them in particular situations.
TOHU : Comment Réversible s’intègre-t-il dans le parcours
de la compagnie ?
GYPSY SNIDER : Comme pour les autres spectacles, Réversible
repose sur le désir de repousser l’expression artistique à travers
les arts du cirque : musique, théâtralité et danse sont liées pour
enrichir nos disciplines, ce qui nous amène toujours plus loin
dans l’expression de celles-ci.
TOHU : Qui compose la distribution ?
GYPSY SNIDER : Trois membres de la troupe et cinq jeunes
artistes fraîchement diplômés de l’École nationale de cirque,
où j’enseigne. Il y a de la place pour accueillir la relève au sein
des 7 Doigts, une compagnie à taille humaine privilégiant un
processus de travail axé sur l’intimité, la proximité, le partage.
Chaque spectacle représente la possibilité de réaliser les rêves
d’expression de chacun.

GYPSY SNIDER: Like other shows, Réversible is based on the
desire to push the limits of the artistic expression through circus
disciplines. Music, theatre and dance connect to refine our art,
which always takes us a step further.
TOHU: Who is part of the show?
GYPSY SNIDER: Three company performers and five young artists
freshly out of the National Circus School, where I teach. Les
7 Doigts is welcoming to the next generation of performers. It’s a
human scale company that encourages a work process focused
on closeness, proximity and sharing. Each show symbolizes
everyone’s opportunity to follow their dreams of being heard.

Le Vide features rope virtuoso Fragan Gehlker performing
stunning acrobatics more than 19 metres above the ground.
A must-see ! Teaming up with his sound engineer, stagehand,
violinist partner Alexis Auffray, the aerial acrobat offers an
extremely physical performance of the legend of Sisyphus,
a tale depicting the absurdity of the perpetual cycle that is life.
Once at the top, the performer slides back down in acrobatic
feats, each more gracious, unusual and impressive than
the other. He then wraps himself up once again…
This extreme metaphor for physical effort will captivate you
until the end. Spectacular and touching, this crazy original
performance explores with comedic and poetic inspiration
the absolutes and their paradoxes: slow and fast, continuity
and intermission, control and freedom.
Specially adapted and modified depending on the settings
and its architecture, the show should be experienced as a
powerful upswing towards the delightful and dizzying
sensation of being alive!

à 19 mètres du sol ! En complicité avec son partenaire Alexis
Auffray, maître des sons, machiniste et violoniste, l’acrobate
aérien revisite de manière extrêmement physique le mythe de
Sisyphe, qui dépeint la vie comme un éternel recommencement
obéissant à l’absurde. Arrivé au sommet, le cordeliste ne peut
que descendre en faisant mille et une figures, plus gracieuses,
inusitées ou saisissantes les unes que les autres. Alors il lui faut
remonter le long de la corde pour continuer…

la scène circulaire de la TOHU en haut lieu de légende. Dans une
scénographie renversante, il raconte l’histoire de la princesse
Amba qui en appela à la vengeance des dieux après avoir
subi déshonneur et rejet. Deux danseurs et quatre musiciens
l’accompagnent dans cette adaptation d’un extrait d’Until the
Lions: Echoes from the Mahabharata de la poétesse Karthika
Naïr, une réécriture personnelle du Mahabharata, la grande
épopée hindoue.
A solar, spirited and magnetic dancer, Akram Khan will be
transforming the circular stage of TOHU into a shrine for legend.
Performed on an amazing tree trunk stage set, he tells the tale
of princess Amba, who invokes the gods to seek revenge after
being abducted from her betrothal ceremony and stripped of her
honour. Two dancers and four musicians accompany him in this
partial adaptation of poet Karthika Naïr’s book Until the Lions:
Echoes from the Mahabharata, an original reworking of the Hindu
epic Mahabharata.
On y retrouve avec ravissement le métissage de kathak, danse
traditionnelle indienne et de danse contemporaine qui a fait la
marque de ce chorégraphe transcendant. Pieds, mains, visage…
Le corps tout entier est engagé dans sa danse virtuose qui

Once again he commingles kathak, a traditional Indian dance
form, with contemporary dance, a distinctive feature of this
transcendent choreographer. Feet, hands, face… The entire body
is engaged in this virtuoso dance which combines flexibility,
precision, speed, slowness, fluidity and absolute presence.
Assisted by a team of veteran artists, Until the Lions offers
a brilliant retelling of an age-old story.

L’histoire d’amour entre Montréal et la troupe australienne
Circa se poursuit avec ce spectacle coproduit par le Festival
de Brisbane qui fusionne l’art acrobatique et l’opéra baroque.
Il Ritorno — Le Retour — est basé sur l’Ulysse de Monteverdi,
ponctué de chansons folkloriques et d’accents électroniques,
touches modernes des arrangements de Quincy Grant. Plus
de 75 minutes de tension sur des thèmes brûlants d’actualité :
la migration, l’exil, la séparation. Le brillant metteur en scène
Yaron Lifschitz y transpose l’exil d’Ulysse en images de migrants
et déportés de toutes les guerres.
Il Ritorno parle de la douleur, celle des corps poussés à leurs
limites, tendus au seuil du déséquilibre dans des contorsions
improbables et des performances extrêmes à couper le
souffle. Il parle aussi de la force explosive des acrobates
de la compagnie, dont c’est la signature.

Circa continues with this heart stopping new show that unites
acrobatic art and baroque opera. Il Ritorno — The Return —
retells Monteverdi’s Ulysse, intermingling it with folk songs
and electronic sounds. Over 75 tensed minutes on burning issues
such as migration, exile and separation, brilliant stage director
Yaron Lifschitz translates Ulysse’s exile in images of
war migrants and deportees.
Il Ritorno showcases the pain felt by bodies being pushed to their
limits and stretched to the edge of unbalance with impossible
contortions of strength and beauty, fused together with the

Pour souligner les 10 ans de Diversité artistique Montréal
(DAM), la TOHU et le Musée des beaux-arts de Montréal
s’associent à l’organisme pour présenter Nulle p’art ailleurs,
une célébration unique en son genre visant à faire découvrir
les talents d’une centaine d’artistes de 28 nationalités vivant
au Québec. Acrobates, plasticiens, musiciens et danseurs
prendront d’assaut la grande salle de la TOHU, alors que plus
de 300 œuvres d’arts visuels de 55 artistes y seront également
exposées. Ces trois journées seront ponctuées de prestations
multidisciplinaires, de conférences, de rencontres avec des
artistes, de visites guidées, d’expériences déambulatoires
et de nombreux ateliers pour toute la famille.

Ce projet, qui s’étale sur trois ans, consiste à actualiser
et à traduire en mouvements acrobatiques, et en peu de mots,
l’essence de cette grande œuvre en s’adressant aux jeunes
de 8 ans et plus. Dans le cadre des Journées de la culture,
la troupe dévoile ainsi au public une partie de son travail en fin
de processus de création. Profitez de la journée pour participer
aux ateliers de cirque et jeu clownesque, visiter la TOHU
et le CESM ou encore, découvrir nos étonnantes expositions !

In residency at TOHU, the acrobatic movement theater DynamO
Théâtre begins the second stage of research for its future
William Shakespeare inspired show: Et si Roméo et Juliette...
The three-year long project involves updating and translating into
acrobatic movements, and only a few words, the very essence of a
great work for the enjoyment of a young audience aged 8 and up.
As part of the Journées de la culture, the company unveils to the
public part of its work towards the end of its creative process.
A whole day to take part in circus workshops and clown games,
visit TOHU and the SMEC, or experience our amazing exhibitions!
LE TOURNOI DES GÉNÉRATIONS
Après avoir démontré à deux reprises que les comédiens sont
de meilleurs improvisateurs que les humoristes (!), la Coupe
TOHU récidive cette année et cherche à répondre à une nouvelle
question de taille : quelle génération maîtrise le mieux l’art de
l’improvisation !
Quatre équipes d’improvisateurs de la Ligue nationale
d’improvisation (LNI) représentant différentes générations
d’improvisateurs - dont les maestros du genre - s’affronteront afin
de mettre la main sur la précieuse Coupe Tohu. Cette soirée haute
en couleurs se veut également l’événement bénéfice annuel au
profit de la LNI. Émotions, fougue et plaisir seront au rendez-vous !
THE CLASH OF GENERATIONS
Connaissez-vous les Sans Filet ? Il s’agit d’une heureuse initiative
de la TOHU pour vous permettre de voir le talent d’artistes dans
un contexte de brise-glace au cours duquel ils testeront leur
numéro sous vos regards ébahis. Une occasion privilégiée de les
admirer, à ce stade fondamental de présentation devant public.
Un rare moment avant l’éclosion d’un nouveau numéro, mis en
valeur par un médiateur artistique, trait d’union entre l’artiste
et le spectateur. Soyez aux premières loges pour découvrir
le cirque d’aujourd’hui… ou plutôt de demain comme si vous
étiez VIP !
Do you know Sans Filet? It is a welcomed TOHU initiative
that showcases the talent of artists in an icebreaker setting.
An ideal opportunity to admire them at a crucial phase, as they
test out their act before an audience. A rare moment prior to
the blooming of a new act, facilitated by an art mediator, who
channels messages between the artist and the audience.
Take a front-row seat to discover today’s circus… or rather
tomorrow’s as a VIP!
After two successful demonstrations proving that actors are
better at improv than comedians (!), the TOHU Cup is back at it
again this year, this time looking for answers to an important new
question: which generation best masters the art of improvisation!
Four teams of LNI improv performers representing different
generations—including masters of their kind—will battle for the
much-coveted TOHU Cup. This memorable night also serves as
the annual fundraising event in support of the LNI. Sensations,
enthusiasm and pleasure await!

To mark the 10-year anniversary of Diversité artistique
Montréal (DAM), TOHU and the Montreal Museum of Fine
Arts come together to present Nulle p’art ailleurs, a unique
celebration that showcases 28 nationalities through the talents
of around a hundred Quebec-based artists. Acrobats, visual
artists, musicians and dancers will seize TOHU’s big hall,
while 300 pieces by 55 artists will also be on display.
Three days filled with multidisciplinary performances,
conferences, meet-and-greet with the artists, guided tours,
street artists, as well as many workshops for the whole family.

Pour une troisième année, des circassiens de passage à
Montréal s’affrontent dans l’arène, là où tous les coups… de
génie sont permis. L’événement promet d’être intense et unique :
deux jours de compétition, 16 circassiens, un arbitre, quatre
comédiens et vous, spectateurs, comme jury !
L’Impro Cirque est un spectacle réunissant discipline de
cirque, improvisation, théâtre, danse et mouvement. C’est à qui
livrera une création spontanée où la technique et le niveau de
performance comptent tout autant que le style et l’originalité !
Le tout, évidemment décliné sur l’inspiration de la thématique
imposée par l’arbitre.
For a third consecutive year, circus artists passing by Montréal
will meet for a combat… of pure genius. The event promises
to be intense and unique: two days of competition, 16 circus
performers, a referee, four LNI improv performers and you, the
audience, as the jury!
The Circus Improv League is a show that combines circus
disciplines, improv, theater, dance and movement. To win, teams
must create spontaneous skits where technique and level of
performance are as important as style and originality! All,
of course, while keeping the given theme in mind. After each
performance, the audience is asked to vote for the winning team!

Manoeuvre and performance artist Alain-Martin Richard, will
sign the first work to be displayed at the metropolitan park
of the Saint-Michel Environmental Complex in 2017. The
permanent art, ordered by the City and created with more than
430 participants and collaborators of the neighbourhood and
elsewhere, will rekindle the collective memory of Saint-Michel
residents whose history is closely connected to the former
Miron Quarry turned into a landfill. Be a witness to his creative
process with this exhibition that depicts the five steps towards the
creation of a collective work.
Établi en Haïti, Daniel Desmarais photographie la péninsule
sud de la perle des Antilles du haut des airs qu’il a capturée
sous tous les angles. Autant de paysages qu’il voit comme
des compositions et des textures qui se transforment en œuvres
abstraites. Découvrez cet artiste ayant reçu de multiples
prix-photos pour son travail en Haïti, notamment le prix Lux
d’Infopresse ainsi que le prix Applied Arts 2016 initié par le
Photography & Illustration Awards pour la photo de
Port-au-Prince présentée dans l’exposition.
Daniel Desmarais, who presently lives in Haïti, captures aerial
photographs of the pearl of the Antilles’ southern peninsula from
all angles. Such beautiful landscape perceived as compositions
and textures, and transformed into abstract art. Discover this
artist who was awarded multiple times for his work in Haïti,
including the Infopresse Lux prize as well as the 2016 Applied
Arts prize, a Photography & Illustration Awards initiative for the
Port-au-Prince photo displayed in the exhibition.

Chadi Ayoub présente TRIPTYQUE, une étude plastique sur les
composantes morphologiques de trois visages. La particularité
de son travail ? L’usage du papier journal qu’il transforme en
pâte lui sert de matériel de base pour sculpter ses multiples
faciès. Cette alternative écologique à l’usage de la matière
première s’arrime bien à la mission environnementale de la
TOHU. Chacun des trois visages conçus est représenté en solo,
duo et trio pour former une série qui à son tour se déploie et se
répète afin de forger un groupe plus imposant ! Un élan créatif
puisant dans la notion d’identité et les rapports d’intimité avec
les gens qui nous entourent et ceux qu’on a quittés.
Chadi Ayoub presents TRIPTYQUE, a study on the morphological
features of three faces. What characterizes his work?
Newspapers turned back into pulp serve as base material to
sculpt the various shapes on which every little feature. This ecofriendly alternative to the use of raw material relates quite well to
TOHU’s environmental mission. Each of the three faces designed
is pictured in a solo, duo and trio to form a series which in turn
expands and repeats itself to create a larger group!
A powerful creative impetus that captures identity and intimate
relationships with people around us and those we left behind.

Une matière et un acte spontané révèlent une impression
unique. Une ligne, fragile et précise, esquisse d’un univers
fantasmagorique, où des personnages errent et jonglent avec
leur folie.
Née d’une affinité entre huile et encre, dessins et peinture, cette
exposition présente une cinquantaine d’estampes originales. Une
immersion dans un monde flottant, habité de figures humaines
extravagantes suspendues dans le vide, auquel nous convie
l’artiste montréalaise Julie Desquand, originaire d’une grande
famille de graveurs et qui a enrichi son talent lors d’expériences
de vie au Sénégal et en France.
Texture combined with a spontaneous act reveal a unique
impression. A line, delicate and precise, outlines a fantastic world
where characters wander and juggle with their own madness.
This exhibition highlights the harmony between oil and ink,
drawings and paintings, with some fifty original engravings.
Julie Desquand invites you to dive into a floating world, inhabited
by extravagant human figures hanging from the air. Coming from
a large family of engravers, the Montréal-based artist has refined
her talent through life experiences in Sénégal and France.

LA MANŒUVRE
Artiste de la manœuvre et de la performance, Alain-Martin
Richard signera la première œuvre qui sera intégrée au parc
métropolitain du Complexe environnemental de Saint-Michel en
2017. L’œuvre permanente, commandée par la Ville et réalisée
avec plus de 430 participants et collaborateurs du quartier
et d’ailleurs, ravivera la mémoire collective des résidents de
Saint-Michel dont l’histoire est intimement liée aux activités
de l’ancienne carrière Miron devenue un site d’enfouissement.
Soyez témoin de son processus créatif grâce à cette exposition
qui présente cinq actions vers la réalisation de l’œuvre
collective.

Dans sa quête du beau et du contemporain, la TOHU
s’associe pour une toute première fois à Chromatic, le festival
d’expériences artistiques vibrantes à Montréal. Plein feu sur
le numérique autour quelques artistes prometteurs ! Une
exposition stimulante, des plus conviviales, grâce à un concept
connectant intimement artistes et public. Un must pour
les amateurs de créations modernes, annonciatrices
des tendances futures…
Baignant dans l’univers de la peinture depuis l’enfance, Dinorah
Catzalco s’est inspirée des couleurs et de la culture de son pays
d’origine, le Mexique, pour créer Tecocuahuitl : l’axe du monde,
une vingtaine de tableaux-sculptures circulaires. Composés
par une multitude de personnages métissés, mi humains et
mi animaux, ces œuvres colorées sont inspirées de mythes et
de légendes tirés du folklore mexicain. Un projet artistique qui
interroge sur l’unité dans la diversité et les enjeux identitaires de
notre siècle.

Immersed in the realm of painting since childhood, Dinorah
Catzalco was inspired by the colours and culture of her country
of origin, Mexico, to create Tecocuahuilt : l’axe du monde, as
series of some twenty circular paintings-sculptures. The coloured
pieces, depicting a multitude of Metis, half-human, half-animal
characters, are inspired by myths and legends from the Mexican
folklore. An artistic project that asks the questions on unity in
diversity as well as the identity issues of our century.
For the first time since its arrival in Montréal in 2003, the
Jacob-William Collection reveals new secrets! Piece by piece,
the collection have been photographed, identified and put online
to make accessible to all this fabulous heritage telling the story
of circus past and present. Discover the exhibition Le parcours
d'une œuvre, to witness the behind the scenes work that allowed
the mysteries of the Jacob-William Collection being revealed
after all those years…

Le parc du Complexe environnemental de Saint-Michel
est en processus de transformation finale. Ancienne carrière
de calcaire et site d’enfouissement, le lieu revitalisé représente
une réelle fierté pour le quartier Saint-Michel et tous les
Montréalais.
Plus grand projet de réhabilitation environnementale
entrepris par la Ville de Montréal, la portion du parc du
CESM déjà accessible s’étend sur 30 hectares, comprenant
une voie polyvalente de 5,5 km.
À l’occasion du 375e anniversaire de Montréal en 2017, deux
nouveaux secteurs d’une étendue de plus de 5 hectares seront
ouverts au public après avoir été réaménagés. L’aménagement
du parc sera complété en 2023 : 153 hectares seront alors
accessibles.
