Biographical note: Michael O’Brien
Michael O’Brien was appointed to the Board of Directors of the Bank of Canada in October 2006.
Born in Summerside, Prince Edward Island, Mr. O’Brien graduated from St. Dunstan’s
University with a Bachelor of Commerce degree in 1963.
Between 2004 and 2006, Mr. O’Brien was provincial Deputy Minister of Development and
Technology, following seven years as provincial Deputy Treasurer. Previously, he was a general
practice partner with Coopers & Lybrand, Chartered Accountants. In 1984, he received his
fellowship designation with the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Prince Edward Island and is
a member of the Canadian Institute of Chartered Accountants.
Mr. O’Brien is a member of the Atlantic Canada Venture Gateway Advisory Board, and also
serves on the Board of Directors of Solarvest Bioenergy Inc.
Mr. O’Brien’s long record of community work includes service as President of the United Way of
Prince Edward Island, Secretary-Treasurer for Sport PEI, Vice-President Finance and
Administration of the 1991 Canada Winter Games, and member of the Queen Elizabeth Hospital
Foundation.

Notice biographique : Michael O’Brien
Michael O’Brien a été nommé au Conseil d’administration de la Banque du Canada en octobre
2006.
Né à Summerside (Île-du-Prince-Édouard), M. O’Brien a obtenu un baccalauréat en commerce de
l’Université St. Dunstan’s en 1963.
De 2004 à 2006, M. O’Brien a été sous-ministre provincial du Développement et de la
Technologie, après avoir occupé pendant sept ans le poste de trésorier adjoint provincial. Il a
auparavant été associé généraliste du cabinet de comptables agréés Coopers & Lybrand. Il a reçu
le titre de membre d’honneur de l’Institute of Chartered Accountants of Prince Edward Island en
1984 et fait partie de l’Institut Canadien des Comptables Agréés.
M. O’Brien est aussi membre du conseil consultatif de l’Atlantic Canada Venture Gateway et
siège au conseil d’administration de Solarvest BioEnergy Inc.
M. O’Brien a beaucoup œuvré dans le domaine communautaire, notamment à titre de président de
Centraide pour l’Île-du-Prince-Édouard, de secrétaire-trésorier de Sport PEI et de vice-président
aux finances et à l’administration des Jeux d’hiver du Canada de 1991, ainsi qu’auprès de la
Queen Elizabeth Hospital Foundation.
