L’ÉDITION 2009 DE L’OMEGA EUROPEAN MASTERS CORRESPONDAIT AUSSI AU 75E OPEN DE SUISSE,
ORGANISÉ POUR LA 63E FOIS SUR LE HAUT-PLATEAU VALAISAN. ON SE SOUVIENDRA
DE CE MILLÉSIME POUR LA VICTOIRE DE L’OUTSIDER ALEXANDER NOREN, MAIS AUSSI POUR
LA PREMIÈRE PARTICIPATION D’UNE IMPORTANTE DÉLÉGATION DE L’ASIAN TOUR.
Le circuit européen s’est largement démarqué de ses
frontières géographiques originelles. La concurrence
de l’US PGA Tour l’a obligé à se rapprocher d’épreuves
internationales disputées aux confins d’autres continents,
comme l’Australie, l’Afrique du Sud ou la Chine. Et c’est
notamment en Asie que les relations les plus étroites
ont été tissées. Une orientation qui enchante la maison
Omega, qui rencontre un grand succès sur les marchés
asiatiques!
Sponsor en titre de l’Omega Mission Hills World Cup
à Shenzhen, qui est la Coupe du Monde des Nations
pour le golf, la firme biennoise a largement soutenu les
organisateurs de l’Omega European Masters dans leur
démarche d’ouverture sur l’Extrême-Orient. Le golf est en
plein boom dans cette région du monde et l’audience y
est particulièrement forte. On a d’ailleurs pu le constater
lors de cette édition 2009, puisque les médias asiatiques
sont venus en masse suivre les exploits des 30 joueurs
de l’Asian Tour qualifiés pour l’occasion. Des golfeurs
dont le niveau est d’ailleurs excellent, puisque 9 d’entre

its original geographical frontiers. The challenge of the

events that are held in the far reaches of other continents
such as Australia, South Africa or China. It is particularly
in Asia that the closest relationships have been formed,
an orientation that has delighted Omega, who are

for golf, the Biel firm has been extremely supportive
towards the organisers of the Omega European Masters
in their approaches to opening up to the Far East. Golf
is booming in that part of the world and the audience
there is particularly large. This could be observed during
this 2009 edition, as the Asian media came en masse
to follow the exploits of the 30 players from the Asian
Tour who had qualified for the occasion. What is more,
these players had an excellent level, as nine of them
managed to pass the cut. It should also be noted that

eux sont parvenus à passer le cut. On rappellera aussi
que des garçons comme le Thaïlandais Thongchai Jaidee,
l’Indien Jeev Milkha Singh ou le Chinois Lian-wei Zhang
animent régulièrement les leaderboards du circuit, sans
oublier la victoire du Coréen Y.E. Yang lors de l’US PGA
Championship, qui est devenu le premier joueur asiatique
à s’imposer dans une épreuve du Grand Chelem. Et le
premier joueur tout court à battre Tiger Woods dans un
Majeur, lorsque celui-ci était leader après trois tours!
Mais si l’Omega European Masters 2009 a eu une
couverture médiatique exceptionnelle, c’est aussi pour
ses qualités intrinsèques. Les beautés du parcours,
du panorama alpestre «s’exportent» idéalement dans
des pays où l’image de la Suisse est très forte. Le jour
où un joueur asiatique s’imposera en Valais, ce sera
véritablement le gros lot!

If the media coverage of the 2009 Omega European
Masters was exceptional, it was also due to its intrinsic
qualities. The beauty of the course, of the Alpine
panorama “exports itself” ideally to countries where the
image of Switzerland is very strong. The day when an
Asian player dominates in Valais, will be an absolute
jackpot!

L’an dernier, c’est toutefois le Suédois Alexander Noren
qui a décroché la timbale. Profitant de la longueur
exceptionnelle de son drive, d’une belle maîtrise
autour des greens et d’une semaine de pleine réussite,
cet outsider du circuit européen s’est imposé pour
la première fois à ce niveau, à l’âge de 27 ans. Il a
patiemment construit sa victoire, produisant son effort
le samedi, avec une splendide carte de 63, qui lui
permettait d’entamer le dernier tour en leader. Une
position qu’il défendait parfaitement, réalisant même
l’estocade sur le trou No 15, en rentrant directement sa
sortie de bunker, sous l’œil incrédule du Gallois Bradley
Dredge, qui le menaçait sérieusement.
Un coup d’anthologie qui restera marqué dans les esprits,
au même titre que le nouveau deal qui lie désormais
l’Omega European Masters au circuit asiatique.
Last year, it was, however, the Swede Alexander Noren
who landed the cup. Making the most of the exceptional
length of his drive, of wonderful mastery around the
greens and of an immensely successful week, this
27 year old European circuit outsider stood out for the
first time at this level. He built his victory patiently,
doing his utmost on the Saturday, with a splendid card
of 63, which enabled him to set off on the last tour as
the leader. A position that he defended perfectly, dealing
the finishing blow at hole 15, by holing the ball straight
from the bunker, under the incredulous gaze of the
Welshman Bradley Dredge, who was a serious challenge
to him.
A shot that will go down in the annals and is sure to be
remembered, just like the new deal that links the Omega
European Masters to the Asian circuit from now on.
