Mental Health. The Canada Gairdner
Awards are recognized as being among
the top biomedical prizes in the world.
Our second mission is to encourage
scientific literacy in Canada and to foster
linkages between the scientific, policy
and health care communities.

pour présenter un formidable symposium d’un jour intitulé Aux confins du
savoir en santé mentale. Les Canada
Gairdner Awards sont reconnus comme
étant les plus prestigieux prix au monde
dans le domaine biomédical. Notre
deuxième mission consiste à promouvoir la culture scientifique au Canada

It has been a great pleasure to partner with The
Gairdner Foundation on the Frontiers in Mental
Health Symposium. The Symposium is the first
event of this scale ever held in Canada. Its purpose
is to highlight the most promising research in the
field of mental health from around the world and we
are delighted to welcome all of you here.
C’est avec un grand plaisir que nous nous sommes associés à la fondation Gairdner dans le
cadre du symposium Aux confins du savoir en
santé mentale, premier événement de cette envergure tenu au Canada. Son but : mettre en évidence
les travaux de recherche les plus prometteurs se
déroulant à l’échelle mondiale dans le domaine de
la santé mentale. Bienvenue à tous.
Gairdner recognizes that mental health
disorders are a major personal and public
health issue. There is an urgent need for
leading neuroscience researchers to share insights
and give direction on next steps.
Today’s symposium will focus on recent research on
genomics and neural circuitry. The 9 outstanding
speakers that our two organizations have brought
together will share recent advances in the causes
and treatments of mental health disease. Interactive
presentations will highlight areas of research with
the most promise, from imaging to pharmacological treatment, and will include a discussion on the
challenges of mental health research.
We are honoured that the event will conclude with
a public lecture by Dr. Norman Doidge of Columbia University’s Center for Psychoanalytic Training
and Research and the Department of Psychiatry,
University of Toronto. He is the author of The Brain
that Changes Itself, in which he shows himself to
be a master at taking complex scientific ideas and
making them accessible to interested lay readers.
We anticipate that today’s program will give new
direction and hope for mental health disorders.

Neuf excellents conférenciers ont été invités par nos
deux organismes à venir parler des récentes percées
réalisées au chapitre des causes et des traitements
de la maladie mentale. Leurs exposés interactifs
mettront en évidence les domaines de recherche les
plus prometteurs, tant sur le plan de l’imagerie que
sur celui du traitement pharmacologique, de même
que les défis de la recherche en santé mentale.
Nous sommes honorés d’accueillir le Dr Norman

Everyone is touched by mental illnesses, whether
directly, in our families, in workplaces or friends
around us. Some of the major mental illnesses
include schizophrenia, bipolar and eating disorders,
depression and addiction. Suffering among those
afflicted and the impact on quality of life and on
productivity in a knowledge-based society is profound. We need to aggressively seek out new and better treatments and channel our resources to areas where the probability
of breakthroughs is the highest. Everyone can play a role in this
effort, even if not directly involved in research.
This Symposium highlights the work of leading-edge, worldclass scientists. It brings together a broad audience of academics, mental health practitioners and administrators, business
leaders, the general public, and most important, those who are
directly affected by mental illness. Hopefully, it will have an
impact that goes far beyond the proceedings of the day.
The Graham Boeckh Foundation’s principal focus is mental
health and the building of partnerships and networks to maximize impact. We have funded the Graham Boeckh Chair in
Schizophrenia Studies at the Douglas Hospital Research Centre – McGill University. We are leading the Science of Science
for Mental Health Research Network with RAND Europe. This
network’s purpose is to change the way research is funded to
achieve higher impact. We are major supporters of the Mental
Illness Foundation’s Partners for Life school outreach program
aimed at early detection of depression and other serious illnesses.
We face many challenges ahead. The Frontiers in Mental
Health Symposium gives us an opportunity to pause and see
how far we have come in our understanding of mental illnesses,
to celebrate some of our most important advances, to assess
the future potential these advances hold for patients and to
plan the way forward. Mental health issues, as we all know, are
complex, but the exciting research presented today gives us
hope for major breakthroughs that will lead to new treatments
and ultimately cures to benefit patients and their families. They
should always be our focus and we are all here to serve them.

Nous sommes tous touchés par la maladie mentale – directement ou à l’intérieur de notre famille
ou de notre groupe de collègues ou d’amis. La
schizophrénie, le trouble bipolaire, les troubles
de l’alimentation, la dépression et la toxicomanie
sont de graves maladies mentales. La souffrance
des malades est profonde, et l’impact de ces maladies sur la
qualité de vie et la productivité dans une société fondée sur le
savoir est considérable. Nous devons découvrir de nouveaux
traitements, plus efficaces, contre les maladies mentales et
affecter nos ressources aux secteurs offrant les meilleures
chances de percées. Nous pouvons tous contribuer à ces
efforts même si nous ne participons pas tous directement à la
recherche.
Le symposium d’aujourd’hui rend compte des travaux révolutionnaires réalisés par des scientifiques de classe mondiale. Il réunit un vaste auditoire d’universitaires, praticiens et
administrateurs en santé mentale, chefs d’entreprise, membres du public et, surtout, de personnes qui sont directement touchées par la maladie mentale. Nous souhaitons que
l’impact de cet événement se répercute bien au-delà des
activités d’aujourd’hui.
La fondation Graham Boeckh se dédie principalement à la santé mentale et à l’établissement de partenariats et de réseaux
générant un maximum d’impact. Nous avons financé la Chaire
Graham Boeckh en schizophrénie du Centre de recherche
de l’Hôpital Douglas, affilié à l’Université McGill. Nous sommes à la tête du réseau Science of Science for Mental Health
Research avec RAND Europe, dont l’objectif est de modifier le
financement des travaux de recherche pour obtenir un meilleur
rendement. Nous sommes parmi les principaux supporters du
programme en milieu scolaire Solidaires pour la vie de la Fondation des maladies mentales, ayant pour objet le dépistage
précoce de la dépression et d’autres maladies graves.
De nombreux défis nous attendent. Le symposium Aux confins
du savoir en santé mentale nous permet de faire une pause et
de constater l’ampleur des progrès réalisés dans notre compréhension des maladies mentales, de souligner certaines
de nos réalisations importantes, d’évaluer le potentiel de
ces découvertes pour les patients et de planifier les étapes à
venir. La maladie mentale est complexe, mais les travaux de
recherche qui seront présentés aujourd’hui nous donnent raison d’espérer et d’entrevoir les grandes découvertes qui donneront lieu à de nouveaux traitements et moyens de guérison
pour le patient et sa famille. Ces derniers doivent demeurer au
cœur de nos préoccupations. C’est pour eux que nous sommes ici.

Sydney Brenner
MD, PhD
Dr. Sydney Brenner is the Director of
the Molecular Sciences Institute, a
private research institute in Berkeley,
California. Dr. Brenner is the winner
of the 2002 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine, and the 1978/1991
Gairdner International Award Winner.
Dr. Brenner was born in South Africa
(13 January, 1927) and educated at the
University of Witwatersrand, Johannesburg (Medicine and Science). He went to Oxford and received
a degree of Doctor of Philosophy in 1952, working
in the Physical Chemistry Laboratory. After a brief
return to South Africa, he joined the MRC Unit in
the Cavendish Laboratory in Cambridge in 1956. He
worked in it and its successor, the MRC Laboratory
of Molecular Biology in Cambridge, where he was
the Director from 1979 to 1987. In 1987, he became
Director of the MRC Unit of Molecular Genetics
retiring in 1992 from the MRC. Dr. Brenner is a
Distinguished Professor at the Salk Institute of
Biological Studies in San Diego, CA.

Dr. Jean-Pierre Changeux is a Professor at Collège de France, and a Professor at Institut Pasteur, Paris, France.
Dr. Changeux is a French neuroscientist known for his research in several
fields of biology, from the structure
and function of proteins (with a focus
on the allosteric proteins), to the early
development of the nervous system
up to cognitive functions. Although being known
in biological sciences for his MWC model, other
notable scientific achievements include the identification and purification of the nicotinic acetylcholine
receptor and the theory of epigenesis by synapse
selection. Dr. Changeux is known by the nonscientific public for his ideas regarding the connection between mind and physical brain. As put forth
in his book, Conversations on Mind, Matter and
Mathematics, Dr. Changeux strongly supports the
view that the nervous system is active rather than
reactive and that interaction with the environment,
rather than being instructive, results in the selection
of preexisting internal representations.

Dr. Thomas R. Insel is Director of the
National Institute of Mental Health
(NIMH) in Bethesda, MD. This is the
component of the National Institutes
of Health charged with generating the
knowledge needed to understand,
treat, and prevent mental disorders.
His tenure at NIMH has been distinguished by groundbreaking findings in the areas of practical clinical trials, autism
research, and the role of genetics in mental illnesses.
Prior to his appointment as NIMH Director in the
Fall 2002, Dr. Insel was Professor of Psychiatry at
Emory University. There, he was founding director
of the Center for Behavioral Neuroscience, one of
the largest science and technology centers funded
by the National Science Foundation and, concurrently, director of an NIH-funded Center for Autism
Research. From 1994 to 1999, he was Director of
the Yerkes Regional Primate Research Center in
Atlanta. While at Emory, Dr. Insel continued the
line of research he had initiated at NIMH studying the neurobiology of complex social behaviors.
He has published over 250 scientific articles and
four books, including the Neurobiology of Parental
Care (with Michael Numan) in 2003.
Dr. Insel has served on numerous academic, scientific, and professional committees and boards. He
is a member of the Institute of Medicine, a fellow
of the American College of Neuropsychopharmacology, and is a recipient of several awards, including the Outstanding Service Award from the U.S.
Public Health Service and the 2010 La Fondation
IPSEN Neuronal Plasticity Prize. Dr. Insel graduated
from the combined B.A.-M.D. program at Boston
University in 1974. He did his internship at Berkshire
Medical Center, Pittsfield, Massachusetts, and his
residency at the Langley Porter Neuropsychiatric Institute at the University of California, San Francisco.

Dr. Shitij Kapur is currently the Dean
and Head of School, Section on
Schizophrenia, Imaging and Therapeutics, at the Institute of Psychiatry,
King’s College London, UK. He moved
to this post in 2007 after serving as
Canada Research Chair for Schizophrenia and Therapeutic Neuroscience, Chief of Research at the Centre
for Addiction and Mental Health, and a Professor of
Psychiatry at the University of Toronto.
Le Dr Shitij Kapur est doyen et chef d’école,
Section de la schizophrénie, imagerie et
thérapeutique de l’Institut de psychiatrie
du King’s College de Londres, au Royaume-Uni. Il a accepté ce poste en 2007,
après avoir été titulaire d’une chaire de
recherche du Canada sur la schizophrénie
et l’application thérapeutique de la neuroscience, chef de la recherche au Centre de

Dr. Kapur graduated from the All India Institute of
Medical Sciences and did his psychiatric training at the
University of Pittsburgh, where he developed an interest in the biology of schizophrenia. He subsequently
completed a PhD and Fellowship at the University of
Toronto and his main research interest was the use of
brain imaging and animal models to understand the
basis of psychosis and its treatment. Working with
basic science colleagues, Dr. Kapur has focused on
how animal models can be used to derive more innovative treatments for schizophrenia – and this work has
pointed to the central importance of appropriate dosing, ‘sensitization’ and the difference between continuous and intermittent dosing in schizophrenia. His latest
work uses psychological theories, computational models, and phenomenological experience of patients and
combines them into a “salience hypothesis” to provide
a more holistic understanding of the experience of psychosis and the impact of antipsychotic medications.

Dr. Robert Post is Head of the Bipolar
Collaborative Network in Bethesda,
MD. He graduated from Yale University in 1964, the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine in 1968,
and interned at the Einstein School
of Medicine in 1969. Psychiatry residency was completed at the Massachusetts General Hospital, NIMH, and
George Washington University. He worked at the
NIMH for more than 35 years, much of it as Chief,
Biological Psychiatry Branch. He focused on better understanding and treating patients with refractory unipolar and bipolar illness, pioneering
treatment with anticonvulsants and repeated transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS). His group
has won major research awards from the Society
of Biological Psychiatry, APA, ACNP, Anna Monika
Foundation, NARSAD, and NDMDA. He is on multiple editorial boards and has published more than
900 manuscripts. He organized the international
Stanley Foundation Bipolar Network (1995-2002),
now continuing as the Bipolar Collaborative Network. In 2008, he completed a book entitled

Child Psychiatry Branch, National Institute of Mental Health. She is a graduate of Harvard Medical School. She

Jeanne-et-J.-Louis-Lévesque Chair in
Genetics of Brain Diseases, Director of
the Centre for Excellence in Neuromics of Université
de Montréal, and Director of the Réseau de Médecine Génétique Appliquée – FRSQ. Over the last
20 years, Dr. Rouleau and his team have focused on
identifying the genes causing several neurological
and psychiatric diseases, including autism, Tourette
syndrome, restless leg syndrome and schizophrenia,
as well as providing a better understanding of the
molecular mechanisms that lead to these disease
symptoms. Among Dr. Rouleau’s main achievements
are his contribution to the identification of over
15 disease-causing genes and his discovery of new
mutational mechanisms.
Dr. Rouleau has published over 450 articles in peerreviewed journals and has been quoted more than
20,000 times. He has supervised nearly a hundred
students at the Masters, PhD and Post-doctoral
levels in addition to receiving numerous awards for

Dr. Pamela Sklar is a neuroscientist,
human geneticist and clinical psychiatrist investigating the genetic causes
of psychiatric disorders, including
schizophrenia and bipolar disorder.
A major focus of her work is to identify susceptibility genes for psychiatric
diseases by applying tools developed
for understanding and characterizing
human sequence variation. Currently, she is Chief of
the Division of Psychiatric Genomics, and Professor
of Psychiatry, Neuroscience, Genetics and Genomic
Sciences at Mount Sinai School of Medicine where
she has recently moved from her prior positions at
Harvard Medical School, Massachusetts General
Hospital and the Broad Institute. In Boston, she was
a founding member of the Stanley Center for Psychiatric Research at the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard and served as the director of genetics for the
Stanley Center from 2007-2010. Dr. Sklar has long
been involved in genetic studies of bipolar disorder
and schizophrenia through her leadership positions
in the Systematic Treatment Enhancement Program
for Bipolar Disorder (STEP-BD) genetics program,
the International Schizophrenia Consortium (ISC),
the International Cohort Collection for Bipolar
Disorder (ICCBD), and the Psychiatric Genome-wide
association disorder consortium (PGC).
Dr. Sklar earned her B.A. in classics and philosophy
from St. John’s College. She received an MD and
PhD in neuroscience from Johns Hopkins Medical
School. She completed clinical training in psychiatry
at Columbia Presbyterian Hospital and the New York
State Psychiatric Institute in Manhattan and postdoctoral training in the laboratory of Richard Axel

Dr. Danny Weinberger is Director of
the Genes, Cognition, and Psychosis
Program of the Intramural Research
Program, National Institute of Mental
Health, National Institutes of Health in
Bethesda, Maryland. He attended college at the Johns Hopkins University
and medical school at the University of
Pennsylvania, and did residencies in psychiatry at Harvard Medical School and in neurology at
George Washington University. He is board certified in
both psychiatry and neurology.
Dr. Weinberger’s research at the NIMH has focused
on brain mechanisms involved in the pathogenesis
and treatment of neuropsychiatric disorders, especially schizophrenia. He was instrumental in focusing
research on the role of abnormal brain development
as a risk factor for schizophrenia. In addition, he and
his colleagues developed the first high fidelity animal
model of schizophrenia. In 2003, Science magazine
highlighted the genetic research of his lab as the
second biggest scientific breakthrough of the year,
second to the origins of the cosmos.
Dr. Weinberger is the recipient of many honors and
awards, including the K.J. Zulch Prize of the Max
Planck Society, the NIH Directors Award, The RocheNature Medicine Neuroscience Award, The William K.
Warren Medical Research Institute Award, the Adolf
Meyer Prize of the American Psychiatric Association,
the Research Prize of the World Federation of Societies
of Biological Psychiatry, the Gold Medal Award of the

Dr. David Goldbloom is the Senior
Medical Advisor at the Centre for
Addiction and Mental Health and
Vice-Chair of the Mental Health Commission of Canada. Dr. Goldbloom
was born in Montreal and raised in
Quebec and Nova Scotia. He completed an honours degree, majoring in
Government, at Harvard University and
then attended the University of Oxford as a Rhodes
Scholar where he obtained an MA in Physiological
Sciences. He trained in medicine and psychiatry at
McGill University and is a Professor of Psychiatry at
the University of Toronto. Dr. Goldbloom’s activities
have been recognized and awarded by his peers
and students. He has authored numerous scientific
articles and book chapters and has provided talks
and lectures to student, professional and public audiences. In addition to his professional activities, Dr.
Goldbloom is Vice-Chair of the Board of Governors
of the Stratford Shakespeare Festival of Canada.

on the organization of health care
systems and the role of Government in the health
care system in the Department of Epidemiology at
McGill University. He has occupied several management positions within the health network and has
worked in acute care, rehabilitation, long-term care
and community services.
Depuis 1994, Jacques Hendlisz est

The focus of his work in the last ten years has been
on the reorganization of services, the development
of quality indicators in mental health, and developing public education programs to address stigma in
mental health. Working with the Research Centre,
he has worked at integrating research into clinical
care in order to develop best practices for mental
health.

On February 11, 2009, Dr. Yves Joanette was appointed by the Cabinet of
the Government of Québec to Chair
the FRSQ’s Board of Directors and to
be the agency’s President and Chief
Executive Officer. Dr. Joanette is a
full professor at Université de Montréal’s Faculty of Medicine and has
been the Director of the Centre de
recherche de l’Institut universitaire de gériatrie de
Montréal (CRIUGM) since 1997.
Further to his
doctorate in neurological sciences from Université
de Montréal (1980), he went on to postdoctoral
training in neuropsychology and behavioural neurology in France (1980-1982) at CHU Timone de
Marseille and École des hautes études en sciences
sociales (EHESS). His main areas of focus are neurofunctional reorganization that enables communication skills to be maintained despite neurobiological
changes with age, the effect of right hemisphere
brain lesions on these skills, and cognitive impairments in Alzheimer’s disease. Since the early years
of Dr. Joanette’s career, he and his team have made
significant contributions to training young health
researchers and health professionals.
Dr. Joanette was a Canadian Institutes of Health
Research scholar and scientist from 1982 to 1992.
He has earned numerous distinctions, including the
Club de recherches cliniques du Québec (CRCQ)
André-Dupont prize in 1990 and the Eve Kassier
Award for his outstanding professional achievements (1995). He is a member of the Canadian
Academy of Health Sciences. In 2007, he received
an honorary doctorate from Université Lumière de

du comportement en France (1980-1982), au CHU

en sciences sociales (EHESS). Ses principaux champs
d’intérêt en recherche sont la réorganisation neurofonctionnelle qui permet le maintien des habiletés
de communication avec l’âge, les effets des lésions

Dr. Mimi Israël is chair of the Department of Psychiatry at McGill University,
psychiatrist-in-chief of the Douglas
Mental Health University Institute, attending psychiatrist for the Douglas
Eating Disorders Program, and Associate Professor of Psychiatry at McGill.
She was director of the Crisis Service
at the Allan Memorial Institute from
1987-2001 and Director of Post-Graduate Training
from 1989-1997. She has also been a Royal College
Examiner for Psychiatry, has chaired the Curriculum
Committee for the McGill Department of Psychiatry
and has been vice-president of the Regional Table
of Medical Specialists of Montreal. In addition, she
is now the president of the Association of Chiefs of
Departments of Psychiatry of Montreal, and a fellow
of the Academy of Eating Disorders. A recipient of
four McGill University teaching awards, including
the 2004 McGill Department of Medicine Faculty
Honour List for Educational Excellence, Dr. Israël
was also presented with the National Alliance for the
Mentally Ill Exemplary Psychiatrist Award in 1998
and the 2006 grand prize from the Quebec Medical College of Physicians. Her research interests
have focussed on the implications of temperamental traits and adverse life events on neurobiological
indices, HPA axis function, and genetic variations
in eating disorders. Other areas of interests within
the field of Eating Disorders include the study of
factors that determine treatment outcome, and
determinants of the efficacy of different treatment
techniques such as partial hospitalization. In addition, Dr. Israël has played a key role in the conceptualization and implementation of several changes
that have had a significant impact on service organization and delivery in the institutions she serves. Her
vision is to create structures that optimize clinicalresearch-teaching integration and that offer cutting
edge evidence-based clinical care.

Dr. Phillips serves as a Councillor for the Society for Neuroscience and is Vice-President of the

Fellowship from NSERC; and most recently, the
Heinz Lehmann Award from the Canadian College
of Neuropsychopharmacology in March 2009. He
maintains a very active and productive laboratory in
systems neuroscience.
Dr. Phillips’ research interests are broadly based
within the field of Systems Neuroscience, specifically related to brain mechanisms of motivation,
emotion, learning and memory, as keys to understanding complex behavior and cognition.

Under Dr. Quirion’s leadership, the Douglas
Research Centre became a premier research facility
in Canada in the fields of neurosciences and mental

research in mental health and addiction. Dr. Quirion
trained over 20 PhD students and 50 PDF in his
laboratories. He is on the Advisory Board of over
15 scientific journals in Psychiatry, Pharmacology,
and Neurosciences and has published 5 books,
more than 650 scientific papers and articles, and
over approximately 25,000 citations and h index
of 78.

One of the most highly cited neuroscientists in
the world, Dr. Quirion has received many honours

Dr. L. Trevor Young is Professor and
Chair in the Department of Psychiatry
at the University of Toronto. He received his medical degree at the University of Manitoba. This was followed
by residency training at McGill University and the University of Toronto
where he also completed his PhD in
Medical Sciences. He completed a Research Fellowship at Johns Hopkins University. His
former roles include Physician-in-Chief, Executive
Vice President Programs at the Centre for Addiction
and Mental Health; Professor and Cameron Wilson
Chair in Depression Studies in the Department of
Psychiatry at the University of Toronto; and Professor and Head, Department of Psychiatry, University
of British Columbia. Dr. Young has received numerous awards including the Douglas Utting Award
for outstanding contributions in the field of mood
disorders, the Canadian College of Neuropsychopharmacology Heinz Lehmann Award, and is a Distinguished Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association. He has led several large clinical programs
including the Mood Disorders Program at Hamilton
Psychiatric Hospital, which received the American
Psychiatric Services Gold Achievement Award. In
2009, he was elected as a Fellow of the Canadian
Academy of Health Sciences.
As an active clinician scientist, Dr. Young’s principal
research interest includes understanding the molecular basis of bipolar disorder and its treatment, and
how to apply these findings to the clinical setting.
He is widely published and well-funded by peer-reviewed granting agencies. His research is particularly focused on understanding the processes that lead
to long-term changes in brain structure and function in patients with bipolar disorder and how these
changes can be targeted by mood stabilizing drugs.
