QATAR ARABIAN WORLD CUP : L’ARC DES PUR-SANG ARABES
La Qatar Arabian World Cup (Sponsorisée par Al Emadi Enterprises) est considérée comme
l’équivalent du Qatar Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe pour les pur-sang arabes. Si cette épreuve n’est plus la
mieux dotée au monde pour les chevaux arabes, elle reste sans aucun doute le summum d’un point de
vue sportif. Sa création est récente : elle date de 2008.
Mais on fait courir des pur-sang arabes en France depuis le dix-neuvième siècle. Cette spécialité, où
excellent les éleveurs, entraîneurs et jockeys français, est longtemps restée méconnue et cantonnée
au Sud-Ouest. Depuis les années 1990, ces courses connaissent un développement exponentiel à
travers le monde. Mais pour tous les acteurs de cette filière, de la Turquie à l’Angleterre, du Maroc à
la Russie, la Qatar Arabian World Cup est l’épreuve ultime, celle que tout propriétaire, éleveur ou
entraîneur rêve de remporter.
Cette année, le phénoménal Al Mourtajez tentera de conserver son titre. Difficile d’imaginer que ce
représentant d’Al Shaqab Racing puisse être battu dimanche, tant il domine son sujet.

Al Mourtajez est le tenant du titre de la Qatar Arabian World Cup, dont il détient le record
chronométrique. En 2015, il a été sacré meilleur cheval du monde dans les catégories des sujets d’âge,
chez les pur-sang arabes. Dans le cadre d’une course régulière, il semble difficile de le voir battu, et
ce d’autant plus que c’est un cheval qui s’adapte à tous les terrains et à toutes les distances. Ce
représentant de l’écurie qatarie Al Shaqab Racing reste sur trois victoires au niveau Groupe 1 PA.
À chaque fois, il a écrasé la concurrence. Cette année, à l’âge de 6 ans, il semble encore plus fort qu’il
ne l’était lors de sa victoire dans l’édition 2015 de la Qatar Arabian World Cup. C’est aussi le sentiment
de son entourage qui estime que le cheval a progressé mentalement et physiquement.
Al Mourtajez est entraîné par Thomas Fourcy. Cet ancien jockey, installé à Royan, s’est rapidement
forgé un palmarès de choix chez les pur-sang arabes, au point de devenir un des meilleurs
entraîneurs de cette spécialité à l’échelle internationale. À ce jour, Al Mourtajez est son meilleur
cheval et ses succès récompensent de nombreuses années de collaboration avec ses éleveurs,
Hassan Mousli, Nada Mousalli et Faiz Al Elweet, qui sont installés en France. Ce cheval porte la casaque
d’Al Shaqab Racing, dont on connaît la très grande réussite à travers le monde avec les pur-sang
anglais. L’exemple le plus célèbre en France étant bien sûr la championne Trêve, double lauréate du
Qatar Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe.
GAZWAN

Gazwan est le dernier cheval à avoir battu Al Mourtajez. C’était le 27 février dernier à Doha, au Qatar,
mais la course s’était déroulée dans des conditions particulières. Dimanche à Chantilly, il semble
difficile de le voir dominer à nouveau le représentant d’Al Shaqab Racing.
Gazwan est un très bon cheval et il s’est notamment classé deuxième de l’édition 2015 de la Qatar
Arabian World Cup, en laissant une très belle impression. Lauréat au meilleur niveau à plusieurs
reprises, cet élève de Son Altesse le Cheikh Mohammed bin Khalifa Al Thani est un vrai cheval de
course. Issu d’une ascendance peu précoce, il arrive progressivement à maturité. Comme en 2015, sa
place est sur le podium.
Il est entraîné au Qatar par Julian Smart, un professionnel qui travaille exclusivement pour le Cheikh
Mohammed bin Khalifa Al Thani. Cet entraînement, cet élevage (Al Shahania Stud) et ces couleurs ont
déjà remporté la Qatar Arabian World Cup à plusieurs reprises. En 2014, ils se sont imposés avec
Djainka des Forges. En 2012, Rathowan et Mkeefa prenaient les deux premières places. En 2011, cette
écurie signait un incroyable trio, Areej, Aziz et Jaafer s'octroyant les trois premières places de la
grande course.
SYLVINE AL MAURY

Sylvine Al Maury est tout simplement la meilleure jument pur-sang arabe au monde. Capable de
battre les mâles, elle reste sur cinq victoires au niveau Groupe. C’est une jument qui a beaucoup
progressé. Par le passé, elle a causé quelques frayeurs à son entourage en signant des fins de
courses spectaculaires. Mais à présent elle est d’une grande maniabilité et peut même se passer de
leader. Pour sa rentrée, en juillet 2016 à Newbury, elle a gagné de toute une classe un Groupe 1 PA.
Suite à cette victoire, son jockey, Jean-Bernard Eyquem, a déclaré : « C’est un phénomène. Elle serait
capable de regarder n’importe quel cheval droit dans les yeux si elle venait à courir la Qatar Arabian
World Cup. Son changement de vitesse est hors norme . » Sur une distance identique à celle de la
Qatar Arabian World Cup, elle a dominé les mâles le 13 août dernier à Deauville, dans la Doha Cup Prix Manganate.
Sylvine Al Maury a débuté sa carrière sous les couleurs de son éleveur, Madame Renée-Laure Koch,
qui est à la tête d’un des meilleurs élevages français, près de Toulouse.
Les Écuries Royales d'Oman, l’actuel propriétaire de la pouliche, sont l’une des forces montantes à
l’échelle internationale chez les pur-sang arabes. Les succès s’accumulent, au meilleur niveau, pour
l’entité omanaise qui a placé beaucoup de chevaux à l’entraînement en France. D’ailleurs Sylvine Al
Maury est entraînée dans le Sud-Ouest par l’épouse du regretté Jean-François Bernard.
TAYF

Tayf a été supplémenté pour participer à la course, c’est-à-dire que son entourage a déboursé 10 000
euros pour l’engager à la dernière minute. Tayf n’est âgé que de 4 ans et il a donc peu d’expérience.
Mais il a montré une qualité certaine. Lors de sa dernière sortie, à Doncaster, dans un Groupe 1
réservé aux 4 ans, il avait course gagnée à quelques mètres du poteau quand il a surpris Olivier
Peslier en faisant un écart sur sa droite. Le poulain a perdu la victoire d’une tête, mais a sûrement
gagné sur cette performance son ticket pour la Qatar Arabian World Cup. Auparavant, il avait gagné un
Groupe 3 à La Teste, et fini deuxième, tout près, du Qatar Derby des Pur-Sang Arabes de 4 ans, à
Chantilly.
Tayf est entraîné par Alban de Mieulle, un Français installé depuis plus d’une quinzaine d’années au
Qatar. Il travaille pour Son Altesse le Cheikh Abdullah bin Khalifa Al Thani, qui appartient à la famille
régnante du Qatar. La casaque grenat à pois blancs possède un palmarès de premier ordre chez les
pur-sang arabes (grâce aux succès de General et Tabarak notamment) mais aussi chez les pur-sang
anglais (Charm Spirit). Elle sera défendue dans le Qatar Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe par Migwar.
Olivier Peslier est le premier jockey de cette casaque.
QATAR ARABIAN WORLD CUP: THE ARC FOR THE PUREBRED ARABIANS
The Qatar Arabian World Cup (Sponsored by Al Emadi Enterprises) is considered as the equivalent to
the Qatar Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe for Purebred Arabians. If this race is not the richest is the Arabian
racing calendar, it is without doubt the pinnacle of the sport. It was only established recently: in 2008.
However, purebred Arabians have run in France since the nineteenth century. This sphere, in which
French breeders, trainers, and jockeys excel, was for a long-time little known outside of South West
France. Since the 1990s, these races have seen global development. For all involved in this sport,
whether they be from Turkey to England, Morocco to Russia, the Qatar Arabian World Cup is the
ultimate race, that which every owner, breeder and trainer dreams of winning.
This year, the phenomenal Al Mourtajez will try to hold on to his title. It is difficult to imagine that the Al
Shaqab Racing owned horse could be beaten this Sunday.

Al Mourtajez is the current tile holder of the Qatar Arabian World Cup, and holds the record for the
quickest time in this race. In 2015, he was the purebred Arabian world champion older horse. As long
as the race is run at a fair pace, it is difficult to see him being beaten, especially as he is a horse that
can go in all ground and over all distances. Owned by the Qatari stable Al Shaqab Racing, he is coming
off three wins at Gr1 PA level. Each time, he has demolished the opposition. This year, at the age of 6,
he seems to be even stronger than when he won the 2015 edition of the Qatar Arabian World Cup. That
is also the feeling amongst his connections, who feel that the horse has evolved mentally and
physically.
Al Mourtajez is trained by Thomas Fourcy. A former jockey, who trains at Royan, has rapidly moved up
the ranks in the training world, and is on the point of becoming one of the best trainers in this sphere
on a international level. Al Mourtajez is his best horse, and this success is a great reward for many
years of collaboration with his breeders, Hassan Mousli, Nada Mousalli and Faiz Al Elweet, based in
France. The horse carries the colours of Al Shaqab Racing, who have known worldwide success with
thoroughbreds. Themost celebrated of these in France is of course the champion Trêve, twice winner
of the Qatar Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe.
GAZWAN

Gazwan is the last horse to have beaten Al Mourtajez. It was on the 27th February at Doha, Qatar,
however the race panned out in a very particular manner. This coming Sunday at Chantilly, it is hard to
see him challenging the representative of Al Shaqab Racing.
Gazwan is a very god horse, and was notably second in the 2015 running of the Qatar Arabian World
Cup, leaving a good impression. Winner of several high-class races, this horse bred by Sheikh
Mohammed Bin Khalifa Al Thani is a true racehorse. From a late-maturing family, he has progressively
come into his best. As in 2015, he deserves to be on the podium.
He is trained in Qatar by Julian Smart, who trains exclusively for Sheikh Mohammed Bin Khalifa Al
Thani. This racing and breeding operation (Al Shahania Stud) has already won the Qatar Arabian World
Cup several times. In 2014, they won with Djainka des Forges. In 2012, Rathowan and Mkeefa finished
first and second. In 2011, they had an incredible 1-2-3, Areej, Aziz and Jaafer taking the honours in
this prestigious race.
SYLVINE AL MAURY

Sylvine Al Maury is quite simply the best purebred Arabian mare in the world. Capable of beating the
colts, She is coming off ifve wins at Group level. This is a mare who has improved greatly. In the past,
she has given her connections a few scares, with some spectacular finishes. However, now she is easy
to ride, and can even go in front. For her comeback, in July 2016 at Newbury, she won a Gr1 PA with
style. Following that victory, her jockey, Jean-Bernard Eyquem said: « She is phenomenal. She can take
on any horse in the Qatar Arabian World Cup. Her turn of foot is incredible. » Over the same distance
as that of the Qatar Arabian World Cup, on the 13th August, she outclassed the colts at Deauville in the
Doha Cup - Prix Manganate.
Sylvine Al Maury began her career in the colours of her breeder, Madame Renée Laure Koch, who is at
the head of one of the greatest French breeding operations in Toulouse.
The Royal Stables of Oman, current owners of the filly, are a rising force in the international purebred
Arabian scene. The successes are piling up for them, and they have many horses in training in France.
Sylvine Al Maury is trained in the South West by the wife of the much-missed Jean-François Bernard.
TAYF

Tayf was supplemented into this race, so his connections paid 10.000 euros to enter at the last
minute. Tayf is only 4 years old, and is somewhat inexperienced. However, he has shown his quality. On
his last start, at Doncaster in a Group 1 for 4 year old, he had the race won when a few meters from
the post he gave Olivier Peslier a shock when veering sharply to the right. He went down by a head, but
won his place in the line up of the Qatar Arabian World Cup. He has also won a Group 3 at La Teste, and
finished a close second in the Qatar Derby des Pur-Sang Arabe de 4 ans, at Chantilly.
Tayf is trained by Alban de Mieulle, a French national who has been in Qatar for several years. He
works for His Highness Sheikh Abdullah bin Khalifa Al Thani, who is part of the Qatari Royal family. The
Bordeaux silks with white spots are well known in the Arabian racing world (thanks to the successes
of General and Tabarak in particular) and also in the thoroughbreds (Charm Spirit). Migwar will carry
them in the Qatar Prix de l’Arc De Triomphe.
