Le Théâtre Gérard Philipe, Centre Dramatique National de Saint-Denis
is a place for theatrical creation, co-production and touring. It is managed by the stage director Jean
Bellorini starting January 2014, accompagnied by his artistic group. His dominant theme is creation,
transmission and education. He aims to be poetic, joyful, deeply ingrained in his territory. A place of thought,
invention, where past and future are questionned. Here is a place where we can express our uncertainties,
doubts, our difficulties to speak out and to listen. The TGP becomes a home for us all.

PREMIERE: Year 2016
Production Théâtre Gérard Philipe - Centre dramatique national de Saint-Denis, Coproduction: in progress
The Brothers Karamazov is a novel made up of several stories within a story, tying in criminal intrigue, love stories and
metaphysical presentations. The unforgettable characters, torn by their inner conflicts, look for truth that has little to
nothing to do with the search for reason. There are the legitimate sons, shining with passion and questions: Dmitry the
passionate lover, Ivan the philosopher, Alyosha the spiritual. Facing them, is the bastard son, Smerdyakov: cynical and
hateful, disgusted with his plight as a servant. Coincidence brings the four brothers back to their father’s hometown and
they struggle to build their life – torn between love and disgust towards their father. Gripped by the questions of life - of
flesh and of faith - they collide with a foolish, self-indulgent father, a father that makes them doubt their way of life. The
murder twists this otherwise philosophical novel into a crime novel and forces the tormented brothers to confront the
question of responsibility. Who is guilty, the one who executes the fatal blow or the one who doesn’t prevent this blow from
being executed? After having recently worked with theatrical material (La bonne âme du Se-tchouan by Bertolt Brecht,
Liliom ou la Vie et la Mort d’un Vaurien by Ferenc Molnár, Cupidon est malade by Pauline Sales), Jean Bellorini adventures
into narrative fiction by taking on Dostoyevsky’s ultimate masterpiece. Accompanied by his troupe of
actors/musicians/singers, new artists, as well as Camille de La Guillonnière for the adaptation and André Markowicz for
translation, Bellorini hopes to express the lyrical and poetic power of this novel.

Liliom, the fairground barker, the thug with the looks of an angel, is going in circles on the fairground carousel, until he
meets Julie, the maid, in the moon lit evening. Love then suggests that change is possible, freedom even. But soon it closes
in on him: unemployment, scheming, and distress until the battering begins. Right in the middle of this dull resignation and
despair, a possible future makes its appearance. A child is announced and Liliom starts dreaming again. He plans a trip to
America for his future family. But to pay for the trip, he has to commit an act that will cause his downfall…
The Hungarian author, Ferenc Molnár described this unique play created in 1909 as a “suburban tale in seven scenes”.
This social and dreamlike tale is sometimes bitter, the relationships are sometimes violent, but the company takes a
completely opposite stance, using its usual gentleness, strength and joy. The fairground setting, the music and the
cheekiness of the actors are the key to enter into this world of shadows and lights, hard and enchanting.
PRESS REVIEW: A tough tale sublimated by the enchanting stage direction of Jean Bellorini. Télérama This is Jean Bellorini’s first staging as the
director of Théâtre Gérard Philipe de Saint-Denis. In Liliom ou La Vie et La Mort d’un vaurien by Ferenc Molnár, a fairground atmosphere spreads
from the stage into the whole theatre. Let the party begin! Les Inrocks Bellorini creates a hypnotic atmosphere, between fairground melodrama,
itinerant circus (…) and wistful musical comedy Les Échos We fall for it, taken away by the generosity of the actors La Terrasse The audience
has a hard time leaving behind this beautiful, wistful fairground melody. Hottello As always with Jean Bellorini, we are amazed – incredible stage
design, with bumper cars, caravan, and apparitions that leave you speechless… Le Canard enchaîné

Basse-Normandie – Vire, with the artistic participation of the Jeune Théâtre National. The text was commissioned by Fabrice Melquiot, for the Théâtre Am Stram

Gérard Philipe de Saint-Denis. The text has been published by Les Solitaires Intempestifs.
A wedding day, quite nerve racking. For the children, the countdown has begun. Indeed, there is no way that Robin’s father
will marry Tine’s mother… This tale is based on A Midsummer Night’s Dream and brings forth the fantasy and the magic of
the original opus. Jean Bellorini gives a generous visual identity and a musical touch – somewhere between pop music and
Purcell. The actors, on their part, offer their own mild madness and fondness for playfulness.
PRESS REVIEW : Jean Bellorini quotes Purcell’s Fairy Queen, and uses his gift, making the stage so lively and poetic that it leads us joyfully into
this enchanted night, where the excitement of passion comes together with the pleasure of acting. La Terrasse

Storytellers, actors, sound fiddlers, musicians, actors, poets, together they all tell the tale of A Child of Our Time, the story
of a clueless person, a confused man who enlists in the Army. Ödön von Horváth published the novel in 1938, following his
famous Youth without God, while he was exiled, fleeing the Hitler regime. This is the interior monologue of a young man on
the dole – carried away by the times he lives in – who becomes a soldier in order to survive. Full of dashed hope and bad
sustenance, he takes a cold look at a world gone wild and mad. The fairground, realm of illusions, gives him back some of
his humanity. As it is also made for non theatrical spaces, the stage is empty. Only the fans can be heard, punctuating the
nuances of the actor’s speech, from incarnation to evocation.
PRESS REVIEW: A remarkable stage success of great political insight, mesmerizing even today. La Terrasse. Stage director Jean Bellorini was
able to create a four-part oratorio (…) the actors’ sauciness paradoxically gives additional intensity to this anti-educational novel. Télérama
(TT). One can recognize in this piece the art of Jean Bellorini’s theater: popular and direct, full of emotion and cleverness, catching one off guard.

“Satie has left thousands of profound jokes, he would send us messages with his distinctive handwriting. He never read our
replies. After he died, in his room in Arcueil under layers of dust, we found hundreds of unopened letters that lay on top of
each other as if we were discovering the ruins of ancient civilizations”, Jean Cocteau wrote.
This trivia is a good illustration of the mild madness of the composer, who spent his life fighting through letters with his
critics, either real or alleged. This is the source from which Jean Bellorini draws the wonderful and tormented words of this
show. The tunes played, determinedly funny, mirror the influence of music-hall and Montmartre’s cafés-concerts on the
composer’s work.

This show is an adaptation of Les Misérables, for two actors in the first part and five in the second one, who take on all of
Victor Hugo’s poetry. Along with two musicians, they listen, cut each other short or start chanting together the story of Les
Misérables exactly as if one were to start singing a song. They are obsessed with the tale’s action as well as with the poetic
language. In the manner of Waiting for Godot, these fellows find themselves in a space they do not know. They are waiting
for something. They fill the blanks with words, their only weapon to survive. They may be rambling but they talk to exist:
what if poetry could save lives?
PRESS REVIEW: The most convincing part of this adaptation of Les Misérables by Victor Hugo is the passion that motivates it. An everlasting rage
in facing iniquity and lies, but above all a passion of these times, personified in our times. Therefore, long after they have left us, we play again for
ourselves alone the death of Fantine and of Gavroche, the funerals of General Lamarck, the riots in the streets of Paris, the end of all things and
hope growing. For days, this living theatre stays with us. Télérama It is impossible to give a proper idea of the enthusiasm aroused by this work, so
genuine, so true, so moving, so mischievous. Le Figaro Even the worst audience would be won over; Victor Hugo too, undoubtedly, the core of his
novel is present, alive and inspiring. Le Monde

In the remote Chinese province of Setzuan, the gods are travelling. They are looking for a good soul and manage to find one,
who accepts to give them shelter for the night: Shen Te, a prostitue. To thank her, they give her money. She then quits her
job and buys a small tobacco shop. That’s when other troubles start for her: escaping from misery also means confronting
it: not just physical, social misery, but also moral misery. The epic saga of the adventures of Shen Te is punctuated by
desperate calls to goodness and outbursts of anger, in the face of the mediocrity and passivity of human beings. The play
deals with humankind and its schizophrenia, mercantile love vs. passionate love.
PRESS REVIEW: Almost three hours of uninterrupted enchantment. (…) Though we’ve seen it last year (this is a reprise), the staging is as strong a
delight as it was then, we are caught up in it, we are unable to believe what we see. Though Brecht’s position on human rapacity, greed, the pretence
of social play, the gods’ silliness and the failure of kindness is a bitter one, the visual and musical exhuberance, the richness and the endless humor
take us away. Fun is everywhere! Le Canard enchainé The staging sweeps the audience off its feet into the whirlpool of a theatre that has as
much to do with theatre trestles as with a fairground. A political voice is heard but without overdoing it. The new translation carried out by Jean
Bellorini in collaboratiopn with Camille de La Guillonnière gives a striking sharpness and relevance to the text. La Croix

© Polo Garat – Odessa The Fourth Book is an allegorical and satirical journey through a terrible and unknown world. The adventurous seafaring of
Pantagruel towards the oracle of Truth ends before they can reach the island of the Holy Bottle. It is indeed beneath the veil
of geographical fiction that Rabelais brings a universal significance to his satire. While pretending to study the customs of
the islands punctuating this sea voyage, his only goal is to describe the social and religious quirks and prejudices of his
time – being here flouted and ridiculed with vehement irony. Each stopover in one of these imaginary lands, each tale
becomes a metaphor and includes a lesson in morality. All the islands, all the monstrous inhabitants dwelling on them, all
the sea creatures and other natural phenomena are just as many obstacles on the path to Truth.
PRESS REVIEW: There is something playful and childlike in the way one creates beautiful theatre with simple means. Le Figaroscope Beautifully directed by
Jean Bellorini in an adaptation based on the Fourth Book, thirteen actors, dancers, looking to the stars yet with their feet in water, take us from the core of
Rabelaisian fancy to a profound reflexion on the place of man in the universe. Télérama On stage, there are thirteen of them; so good they would even make a rock
fall for Rabelais! Yes, theatre can be festive, Jean Bellorini proves it with great talent: a new, joyful star, in the sky of theatre. Le Monde.

© Serge Bloch I am willing to reconnect with one of the company’s work trends, and more precisely the work method that lead
to the creation of the Chat Borgne Théâtre, i.e. stage composition, in which the text does not come first but builds throughout the rehearsals, as also does the
musical narrative. This is the lead of Savent-ils souffrir ? Chaux Vive, Erwan et les oiseaux or Silures. Jachère [Fallow]. To lie fallow, neglected. To be left on the
fringe. Jachère would be set in a public place, a pub. It could be the third part of the pub trilogy, following Chaux Vive and Silures. We would start with Chroniques
de l’oiseau à ressort [The Wind-UP Bird Chronicle] by Haruki Murakami, not as a work to be adapted, but as a basis, a common matrix.
PRESS REVIEW OF THE COMPANY’S PREVIOUS STAGE COMPOSITION: SAVENT-ILS SOUFFRIR ? Meticulously made, this portrayal of a
world coming loose is a true wonder. Télérama It is funny. Like the stroke of a caricaturist, the invention of a “Crazy Professor, a “cadavre
exquis”proposed as theatre. Concerned with proposing real theatrical form as well as judging it from within. Rouge CHAUX VIVE The speechless
theatre of the Chat borgne outlines a fragmented world, both sad and cheerful, nourished by reading impressions, memories and events, all varying
in a more or less visible way. Libération

Three sisters, Olga, Irina, Macha… The Three Graces, the three Parcae… Chekhov did not innocently choose to write for a
women’s trio. Even when he added a fourth figure to the trio, Andreï, the brother, which made the symbol slightly
equivoque, however, it remains true that three sisters make an impression. Jean-Yves Ruf was immediately fascinated by
this unusual, profound, mysterious play. It has always intrigued him, because of its clandestine character, this feeling of
insidious disintegration which wins souls over… It is of course rooted in Russia’s history: bankrupt aristocrats, clinging to
outdated values, candidly philosophing with optimism in a country on the brink of disaster. But Chekhov also provides for
more timeless interpretations. These three sisters bring all the energy of their youth to fight for a life that could fulfill their
hopes and keep their utopia alive. This is a precise and deep description of the passage from childhood’s carelessness to
the growing awareness that life is moving on too quickly, where the possibilities inevitably come closer, where the acute
question of meaning is raised.
“If we only knew” is the last sentence of the play.

What is the impact of a name like Eichmann on our collective psyche? How do we understand the figure of Evil and what are
the fantasies associated with it?
Seated inside his glass cage during his trial, he listens carefully to the proceedings. This man, being tried in front of the
whole world, is the ultimate monster. Yet, we are bothered by his normality, his triviality, a second-rate mediocre official,
eager for recognition. Eichmann reveals the part of us we are most afraid of. This ability to obey and submit still allows
massacres and occupations, institutionalised apartheids and ordinary discrimination to take place.
The monster eventually turns out to be less disturbing than this common man, this man any of us could have been.
Eichmann à Jérusalem is an attempt at studying, through theatre and dramatic research, the creation process of a
collective memory, the manipulation and exploitation of people’s feelings, as well as questioning the limits of our liability.
This show mixes fiction and reality, in a space permitting the juxtaposition of various places, times, and acting styles,
halfway between disembodiment and perfect re-enactment.

“We are not a language, a religion or a colour. We are a people of letters, photos, and films. We carry our homes on our back."
Putting together pictures, films and archive documents, the members of Théâtre Majâz invent a story that mingles fiction and
truth, past and present Arab, Hebrew and French. This hopeful tale peppered with humour is also a reflection upon collective
memory by young artists who inherited, from their origins, very complex questions. This show qualifies and humanizes a conflict
loaded with misconceptions and brings a dream to life : one of resistance whose only weapon is benevolence.
PRESS REVIEW: Thanks to Les Optimistes, the Théâtre Majâz offers us a beautiful humanist story that keeps us hanging on every word, and leaves
us deeply moved. The delicate stage direction is outstanding. A dreamt Middle East on stage, and a true moment of theatre for all. Les Trois
Coups Through humour, poetry, intelligence, and without succumbing to the appeal of melodrama, Ido Shaked conjures one of the most difficult
times of our history. We grow attached to the characters, we understand their wounds, we sigh with them. In the style of Wajdi Mouawad, but
without the tragic taste. A great moment of theatre just the way we like it. Time Out Paris

© Serge Bloch Each scene shows couples forming and separating, for a night, for a life: they make love, before and after; it is a circle, a
naughty circus and the audience laughs at this walk of humanity fighting for a pinch of pleasure in circumstances where
error, ridicule and pathos compete. Impasse des anges is meant to be an amplified reflection on modernity on the verge of
disaster, which among so many other possible answers seek confirmation through sex. Confirmation of the other. A mirror
reflection as a confirmation of the presence of oneself and the other.
PRESS REVIEW: Rather than austerity or modesty, this play shows intelligence when exposing such a theme. By treating sex through words,
Alain Gautré and his actors make a potentially stodgy subject delightful and desirable, because they do not limit themselves to being just shockingly
naughty. It is funny, lively, and moving. And there is enough room for the audience to gladly and knowingly slip into this vibrant sea of sexual waves.
Les Trois Coups The lines are blunt, very explicit, but thanks to the text, the staging, (both by Alain Gautré)and the actors interpretation, the
play comes out right, is never exhibitionist or vulgar, but filled with inventive proposals and humour. La Voix du Luxembourg

Staging the story of the Berlin Wall is a way to question this legacy from an artistic point of view. Born between 1986 and
1990, during its fall, these young adults have grown up in a new world: American supremacy, absolute decline of
communism in Europe, primacy of the individual, global political and economic challenges. To express the fears and hopes
of their times, the actors of the Birgit Ensemble seek to reveal the traces left from November 9th, 1989: traces that define
them and over which they have no control. What exactly did they inherit on that day?
“Without an alternative, left and right are meaningless terms. They are like two hot-dog stands: one has a bit more ketchup
while the other has a bit more mustard. It all really boils down to two different ways of foisting the same sausages to
people.” Heiner Müller
PRESS REVIEW: It is a rare pleasure to discover young artists when everything seems to fall straightaway into place: the strength and beauty of
the words, the quality of the acting joined with an inventive and elaborate setting that fit perfectly, the writing of the show, the energy it releases
and the impression it leaves in our memories, repeatedly rekindled, making us dream and think. This is precisely what we feel when watching
Berliner Mauer: Vestiges. Les Inrocks Their energy is so engaging and beautiful, their talent so cheerful, that we can’t wait to see what the Birgit

Children and friends meet in the countryside for a funeral. When they are all reunited, it is as if they came back to life, they
intersect and the sound of conversations takes a more normal course. For instance, eating becomes the most obvious
thing. But is this really an "obvious" moment? Burying the 1968 generation events is not easy! They hate ceremonies, all
etiquette, traditional family reunions, the idea of aging, even the idea of dying and above all that of disappearing… How will
their children cope on the day of their funeral? How to say goodbye without submitting to the usual language on a day of
mourning? Is all to be reinvented? Could this be a party? An ordinary meal? An exceptional burial without convention or
limit? Short-lived reunions, mourning people pay homage to the deceased at noon, and then already forget them by
midnight… Then, in such a moment, everything seems possible again…

The story of the Dibbuk adds a fantastic dimension to the fulgurance of a tragic love destiny, such as Roméo and Juliette or
Pyramus and Thisbe. This is one of the strong points of An-Sky’s writing: he was able to give this love story the mystical
power of the Song of Songs. This dramatic legend fostered an essential page in the history of the 20th century theatre, from
both aesthetic and political points of view. The story of the Dybbuk balances itself, between the historical and cultural
portrayal of a particular environment, and the expression of feelings and ideas of universal scope. Putting on this play
today means first to appreciate fully the major event it represented in Europe when it was created. It also means to

A great comedy of manners on the corruption of wit, a satire of extreme preciousness, the exposure of pedantry, Trissotin
ou les Femmes savantes is the title given to the 1672 play by Molière as soon as the show was performed again. It exposes
the importance of the role of the smarmy and hypocritical poet. Besides the latent and explicit misogyny presented by
Molière, Macha Makeïeff questions the male terror faced with unlimited feminin desire : desire for knowledge, for science,
for imagination and dreams, and questions above all the male turmoil resulting from it. In this house the excessive women,
erotic craziness of one, mystical dementia of another, a crazed and influent mother, the passionate rebellion of the
youngest, all invade and threaten the domestic order. The women are lost in different dead ends, facing the confused
husbands, the brothers, these insecure seducers, scheming, scrounging and manipulating. In this crazed and delirious
household, only scheming , lying, and manipulation, along with laughter, music and some tricks – that’s to say, the theatre
and its force- will bring to light and overcome the crazy storm of these follies.
