It seeks to redefine the critical function of contemporary Art. This research continues the reflection initiated by the “School of Frankfurt” and the critical tradition: How could Art be a force of resistance against the cultural industry, mainstream ideology and capitalism? How could Art participate in class struggles by proposing an art form that is popular without being a mass art? How could Art be a vector of emancipation and define itself as a praxis? It tries to pursue this project by defining the conditions of possibility of a critical art in the contemporary context, which implies the collapse of alternative models, the capacity of absorption of capitalist system, the institutional integration of Art… and so on. The methodological framework comes under an empiricist and a pragmatist approach and pays attention to the artworks. Indeed many æsthetic philosophies, in the past, were written in denial of the reality of Art and pretended to talk generally about Art, without taking its productions into account. An æsthetic of contemporary art needs to be very attentive to the art forms and mutations and build itself along back and forth movements between practice and theory. To counter what David Hume used to call “the Abstruse philosophy” and its tendency to abstraction, pragmatism defends a contextual and dynamic approach, based on experience which permits to think closer our contemporary reality. My Thesis focused on art practices in the public space, but over the last five years, this reflection has turned to documentary practices. And this, for three main reasons. First, because the documentary, by definition, expresses a concern for reality. The documentary practice, historically, has established itself as a social and critical Art, as compared to more formalist or autonomous art forms. Besides, over the last 10-15 years, we can observe a revival due to the digital revolution and the new digital cameras which all simplify the production, the shooting and the editing. Therefore, artists from schools of Fine Arts and not only filmmakers, have begun to make documentaries, have invented news forms and new apparatus and thus, linked them to the history of art (video, painting and performances) and not only to the history of cinema. However, introducing documentary practices in the space of art, in a space devoted to formal experimentation is also is also a way to conduct an internal criticism within the art institution. My last book, Dispositifs critiques, le documentaire du cinema aux arts visuels, (be released in bookshop in October 14) aims to elaborate such æsthetic of the documentary for visual arts. An æsthetics which takes into account the main transformations in documentary practices we have observed since the turn of the century. Key words and authors references: Pragmatism (William James, John Dewey, Jerold Levinson, Richard Shusterman) / School of Frankfurt and Critical Theory (Benjamin, Adorno, Kracauer, Brecht, Hal Forster, Benjamin Buchloh, Jacques Rancière) / Humanities (social sciences, Anthropology) / Contemporary art (Art-action, contextual art, performance, video and documentary). 8
