NEWSLETTER
AUTUMN 2011
Revisions to LTA Teachers Payments
The way Lancashire calculate payments to supply teachers has changed. Prior to
September 2011 supply teaching staff were paid based on a divisor of 975 hours (25
hours per week) and with effect from 1 September the divisor is now1265 hours
(32.436 hours per week).
Previously, based on a divisor of 975 hours (25 hour per week), LTA teachers were paid
5 hours for a daily rate, and in most instances, 3 hours for a morning and 2 hours for an
afternoon.
From September there is no change to the daily rate for supply teachers, but the change
in divisor changes the maximum daily hours a LTA teacher can be paid from 5 to 6.5
hours. There is a change in the hours a LTA teacher claims for a morning from 3 to 4
hours and 2 to 2.5 hours for an afternoon placement. This model ensures that there is
minimal impact to both the pay to the teacher and charge to the school for part day
placements, and no change for full day placements. The table below shows the
difference between the two divisors.

Safeguarding
In order to be compliant with the law all teachers and support staff in schools have to
undergo an induction to safeguarding procedures which we include as part of the LTA
compulsory induction sessions. Your LTA Induction attendance certificate proves to LTA
that you have had this induction to Safeguarding.
Safeguarding training has to be renewed every three years. We offer regular
opportunities to update training and gain a Level 1 certificate. LTA will ask to see your
certificate if they know that it is three years since your last training.
Our next Safeguarding Level 1 session will be held on 25th Feb at Lancashire College,
Chorley.

CRB and Identification: Please note you are required
to take Photo Identification; either a Passport or Driving
Licence and the paper copy of your most recent LTA CRB
to every assignment through the LTA. Without these
documents you may not be allowed access to the school.
CVs: Please add Sept - Dec 2011 to your CV to ensure
nothing is missing! It is important that we get the
message to schools that our staff are the BEST!
Experienced, keen, enthusiastic people who can really
add value to schools and nurseries. We speak to around
15 schools each per day and this is to try and source
work for you - so please help us to find you the best
possible job by updating your CV regularly and making
sure it stands out from other CVs that schools may see.
Who's New?
Over the last eighteen months the two LTA offices have recruited five
new members of staff.
Here are very brief overviews of the new faces in the LTA.
Lancaster
Nicholas Howson (Assistant Temporaries Consultant)
Whilst studying History and International Relations at Lancaster
University, I undertook an intership with Reed Education in Lancaster. I
was able to gain a insight into the UK's leading recruitment agency
and how a successful business operates internally. I was then rewarded
with a contract during my final year at University, which I then
continued following graduation. The ethos of Reed as a company and
brand to be the best appealed to me as an individual, whilst my degree
enabled me to be organised, to do a job which requires much multitasking. Having gained a First Class degree this summer, I feel Reed are
the perfect employers to progress my development as an employee
and individual.
Preston
Rebecca Pattinson (Assistant Temporaries Consultant)
I graduated from Lancaster University in the summer of this year with a
degree in French and Spanish studies. I started working for the
Lancashire Teaching Agency in September as an Assistant Temporaries
Consultant so this is my first 'real' job and I am really enjoying it so
far...except for the early mornings! I hope to have a successful career
working for the LTA.
Laura Kowalski (Recruitment Consultant)
I Graduated from The University of Cumbria as a Primary school
teacher in July 2010 and decided to start my career with the LTA in our
Lancaster office as an Assistant Consultant, supporting the team. I
then progressed to a Consultant and moved back to my home town of
Preston in April 2011 to work on one of the Primary desks. My role
now is to supply teachers and teaching assistants to the Primary
school's in Preston and the Hyndburn area, and my plan of action will
be to venture out to as many school's as possible in the New Year. One
of the best perks of my job is visiting schools and getting to know
bursars and head teachers.
Pamela Burrow (Recruitment Consultant)
I started with the LTA in June 2010, and was based at the Lancaster
office as an Assistant Consultant. I moved to Preston in September
2010 and I now work with all schools in East Lancashire, promoting
our local Teachers and Teaching Assistants. Before joining the LTA I
graduated from Lancaster University with a degree in Geography and
French, I spent 3 years working in France and in the Lake District, for
the YHA and as a ski guide in the Alps - I then came back to Lancaster
where I'm based and worked for an Estate Agency before starting with
the LTA. I have worked as a voluntary TA and many of my friends and
family work in education so hopefully my background and experience
help me to do a good job!
Amy MacEwan (Assistant Temporaries Consultant)
I graduated in June from Aston University having studied International
Business and Management for 4 years, including a year spent studying
in France. I then gained a place on the Reed Graduate Training Scheme
which involves 3 one year placements. My first placement is at the LTA
and I started here in September 2011. I am working as an assistant to
Catherine and Pam, which I enjoy greatly. The best thing about
working at the LTA is the variation of people I am in contact with on a
daily basis.
Agency Workers Regulations
LTA Compulsory Induction
The induction training for all LTA teachers and Support staff is well established,
organised and run by Learning Excellence. The aim of training is to provide an overview
and update on current issues and practice as well as an induction into safeguarding
and ICT. A representative from LTA is in attendance to present information on day to
day procedures for supply teachers. The training is accessible because it is held as
twilight sessions or Saturday mornings and is at local venues so work opportunities
need not be missed. Each participant recieves a certificate of attendance.

In October 2011, new legislation called the Agency
Workers Regulations (AWR) came into effect,
giving all agency workers in the UK the same rights
and benefits enjoyed by those employed directly by
the school. There is a 12 week qualifying period
before entitlement comes into effect.
As the LTA deploys all teaching staff according to
the Teachers' Pay and Conditions document and all
Support Staff are paid on LCC pay grades, this
means that LTA staff are getting the same basic
payment rights as contractual employees from day
one.
If you work for an agency that pays you less that
LTA, you will need to speak to them to find out
how these regulations will affect you in the
different placements you carry out. It is important
to keep your own records where you have worked
so you can monitor when you have reached the
qualification period.
Course Programme
Learning Excellence teacher advisers and consultants have put
together a programme of courses to meet the needs of supply
teachers. These are listed on the Learning Excellence website accessed
via the link button on: www.lancashireteachers.co.uk
Some of the courses are specifically for LTA teachers and Support staff,
others are courses which are offered to schools as well. The schools
pay to send their staff on the courses while LTA pays for the supply
staff to attend. Further courses will also be added to the website to
meet demand and respond to your needs. There are three categories
of course:
Teachers – Oracle Self Service
Supply teachers (not support staff) are able to access their
payslips online through Oracle self service.
