MSS.AFRICAN TRADE UNIONS
Introduction
In 1966 the Library accepted responsibility under the Standing Conference on Library
Materials on Africa (SCOLMA) specialisation scheme for the collection of African trade union
material. Mr C.H. Allen, then one of the College’s research fellows, was particularly
interested in African unions and he was instrumental in acquiring much of the material now
held in the College Library. Nothing has been added to the archive collection since Mr
Allen’s departure from Nuffield College in 1970, although relevant published and
unpublished material is purchased as necessary for the main stock in the Library.
This is a miscellaneous collection of documentation relating to and about trade unions in
various African nations between the years 1949 and 1969. The documents vary from
constitutions to publications, press cuttings to legislation and manifestos to speeches. Most
of the documents are in English, but some are in French. The countries covered include
Kenya, Ghana, Nigeria, Senegal, Uganda, Gambia, Angola, Botswana, Swaziland and
Sierre Leone. The main trade unions include the Railway African Union (Kenya), All African
Trade Union Federation, Confedération Syndicale Africaine, Ghana T.U.C., Nigerian T.U.C.
and Union Nationale des Travailleurs Sénégalais (Senegal).
