Michel Binette, Artist, Quebec
Michel Binette, artiste, Québec
Michel Binette is one of Quebec's leading bronze
sculptors working in the figurative tradition. Born in
Montreal in 1948 and mainly self-taught, he
studied with master sculptor Emile Brunet and
honed his skills early on as an anatomical
illustrator.
Michel Binette est un des sculpteurs sur bronze en
style figuratif les plus en vue au Québec. Né à
Montréal en 1948 et principalement autodidacte, il a
néanmoins étudié avec le maître-sculpteur Émile
Brunet et a perfectionné très tôt ses compétences
d’illustrateur anatomique.
In 1970, Mr. Binette received wide recognition for
his sculpture of Canadian hockey legend Maurice
"Rocket" Richard. Since then he has established
himself as a master sculptor concerned with
portraying important Canadian historical, political
and cultural figures, as well as paying homage to
the country's agricultural and craft workers. Among
his many works are monuments of First Nations
Chief Tecumseh, Marquis de Montcalm, former
Quebec Premiers Adelard Godbout and Robert
Bourassa, American artist Andrew Wyeth and
Canadian abstract painter Jean-Paul Riopelle
En 1970, M. Binette retient l’attention avec sa
sculpture du légendaire hockeyeur Maurice
« Rocket » Richard. Il s’est depuis taillé une place de
maître-sculpteur soucieux de représenter des
personnalités historiques, politiques et culturelles
canadiennes d’importance, et de rendre hommage
aux travailleurs agricoles et aux artisans du pays.
Parmi ses nombreuses œuvres, soulignons des
monuments à la mémoire du chef des Premières
nations Tecumseh, des anciens premiers ministres
québécois Adélard Godbout et Robert Bourassa, du
marquis de Montcalm, de l’artiste américain Andrew
Wyeth et du peintre abstrait canadien Jean-Paul
Riopelle.
Mr. Binette's works have been featured in many
one-person exhibitions in Quebec, Ontario and
New York State. As testimony to his artistic
lineage, in 1980, Binette was selected as the only
living artist to exhibit with the Old Masters—
Cornelius Krieghoff, Clarence Gagnon, Suzor Coté
and Albert Frank among others—at the prestigious
Kaspar Gallery in Toronto. His works appear in
permanent collections in Canada, England, France
and the U.S.A.
Marta Farevaag, Urban Planner, British
Columbia
Marta Farevaag is a partner at Phillips Farevaag
Smallenberg (PFS) with extensive experience in
many aspects of urban planning and design,

Marta Farevaag, urbaniste, Colombie-Britannique
Marta Farevaag est associée du cabinet Phillips
Farevaag Smallenberg (PFS) et possède une vaste
expérience de nombreux aspects de la planification et
du design urbains, y compris des lignes directrices de

regularly works on multi-disciplinary teams

Landscape Plan in 2000 where PFS was the prime
consultant.
As an urban planner, Ms. Farevaag brings a
community and land use planning perspective to
PFS' projects, allowing the firm to engage early
and significantly in a variety of large-scale work.
She also consults widely on public involvement,
especially for complex and, frequently,
controversial design processes. Ms. Farefvaag is
particularly skilled at closing the gap between
planning principles and built design. She is on the
Board of the Vancouver Heritage Foundation and
is a jury member of the Canadian Institute of
Planners National Awards.
Robert Henderson, Historian, Ontario
design, de la planification de l’utilisation du sol et de
la gestion des ressources patrimoniales, de la
revitalisation d’espaces commerciaux, des plans
conceptuels de parcs et d’espaces ouverts, ainsi que
des processus de consultation publique. Elle travaille
régulièrement au sein d’équipes pluridisciplinaires
dans les domaines de l’utilisation du sol et du design
urbain, notamment en 2000 pour le Plan paysager de
la Colline du Parlement pour lequel PFS était le
principal expert-conseil.
À titre d’urbaniste, Madame Farevaag amène aux
projets de PFS une dimension de collectivité et
d’utilisation du sol, ce qui permet à l’entreprise de
s’engager à point nommé et de manière significative
dans divers projets d’envergure. Elle agit aussi en
qualité d’experte-conseil en matière de participation
du public, surtout dans le cadre de processus de
design complexes portant souvent à controverse.
Madame Farevaag est particulièrement habile
lorsqu’il s’agit de réconcilier les principes de
planification et le design bâti. Elle est membre du
conseil d’administration de la Vancouver Heritage
Foundation et membre du jury des prix nationaux de

Robert Henderson, historien, Ontario
Former Military Curator of Parks Canada for
Ontario, Robert Henderson has been working in
the field of heritage commemoration for almost
twenty-five years. His previous experience as an
archival professional at the Library and Archives of
Canada has given him the research skill-sets to
uncover key primary source documentation for
various projects. Along with creating and editing
the well-visited War of 1812 internet site
(Warof1812.ca), Mr. Henderson has authored
dozens of articles on the said war for numerous
publications. His book “Desperate Bravery: The
Last Invasion of Quebec, 1814” will be published
in 2012. For over fifteen years Mr. Henderson has
managed a successful business providing heritage
solutions to world-class institutions in over twenty
different countries. The Smithsonian (Washington),
Imperial War Museum (London), Musée de
l’Armée (Paris), and Swedish Army Museum
(Stockholm) are counted among his firm’s
prestigious military heritage clients. He lives in
Manotick, Ontario (near Ottawa) with his wife
Renée and son Sébastien.

Greg A. Hill, Artist and Curator, Ontario
Greg A. Hill, artiste et conservateur, Québec
Greg A. Hill is a multidisciplinary artist and a
curator. He was born and raised in Fort Erie,
Ontario and is a Kanyen’kehaka (Mohawk)
member of the Six Nations of the Grand River
Territory. Hill’s work as an artist is primarily in

Denis Racine is currently Executive Director, Major
Events and Celebrations, at the Department of
Canadian Heritage. Mr. Racine’s responsibilities
include directing national celebrations and
commemorations and ceremonial events of state.
Major events such as the commemoration of the

200 Anniversary of the War of 1812, Royal Tours,
the State Funeral for the Honourable Jack Layton
and the Government of Canada’s participation in
the Torch Relays, the Celebration Sites and the
Ceremonies for the Vancouver 2010 Olympic and
Paralympic Games were all organized under Mr.
Racine’s guidance and responsibility. Mr. Racine
also assumed in 2007-2008 the duties of Federal
Commissioner for the 400th Anniversary of
Québec.
