Our Annual Meeting and Membership
Appreciation Night held last Saturday
reminded me of a high school reunion that I
recently attended. At the reunion, there
were people who see each other on a
regular basis and those who literally havenʼt
been seen since high school. But
regardless of how often or infrequently weʼd
met over the years, it didnʼt take long for
everyone to bond with each other. The
boundaries of any cliques that defined us in
high school disappeared, and there was a
wonderful camaraderie among us
classmates that evening.
We had a wonderful representation of AFH
membership at our meeting as well. There
were those who meet every week, every
two weeks, or every month. There were
new members and those who have been
I speak of the importance of the AFH
boardʼs leadership often, but our members
also play a significant role in keeping our
organization successful. In my comments
on membership status during our meeting,
in reference to what it takes to keep an
organization such as ours thriving, I quoted
Bruce Bochy, the General Manager of the
San Francisco Giants baseball team who
won the 2012 World Series. He said, ”When
you have heights to climb, service trumps
self-interest every time.” Every player does
his personal best during every game
because he knows that it impacts the
teamʼs total performance. Interestingly,
some of the best players only hit the ball 3
½ times out of 10 times at bat, so doing
oneʼs best doesnʼt mean hitting the ball
every time.
And so it is with our members: whether you
meet every week or only once a month,
whether you attend all the events or just
one or two, whether you host a potluck
dinner or send your child to Le Petit Atelier,
you all add to our overall success. You
sustain the organization through use and
contribution just as the players on a
baseball team. And in the end, we all go
home with a World Series ring. So letʼs

membership for another year and making a pledge to get up
to base, take your stance, and swing!
As always, there are many people to thank for all of their
time and work throughout the year. As 2012 comes to a
close, our thanks go to Sarah Pouzet for bringing us into the
social media world and her great work on our Facebook
page. Sheʼs taking a break and retiring from our board of
directors as of the end of December. And as we look forward
to the new year, we welcome and thank Glenn Silva and
Matt Lauzon for joining the board for the next two years.
Both Glenn and Matt have served as directors in the past, so
we look forward to their expertise and experience.
Itʼs been a wonderful year for the Alliance Française of
Hawaii thanks to all of you. On behalf of the AFH board of
directors and regents, happy holidays and all the best for
2013!
Notre Assemblée générale annuelle qui sʼest tenue samedi
dernier m'a rappelé une réunion de lycée à laquelle j'ai
récemment assisté. À la réunion, il y avait les gens qui se
voient sur une base régulière et ceux que littéralement on
n'a pas vus depuis que nous étions étudiantes. Mais peu
importe combien de fois ou rarement nous nous sommes
rencontrés au cours des années, ça n'a pas pris longtemps
pour que tout le monde crée des liens de l'un à l'autre. Les
frontières des cliques qui nous ont définis au lycée ont
disparu et il y avait une merveilleuse camaraderie parmi nos
condisciples au cours de cette soirée.
À notre réunion, nous avions une merveilleuse
représentation de membres dʼAFH. Il y avait ceux qui se
rencontrent chaque semaine, toutes les deux semaines, ou
chaque mois. Il y avait de nouveaux membres aussi bien
que ceux qui ont été membres de lʼAFH depuis son
commencement. Grâce à la gentillesse de beaucoup de
vous qui avez assisté à ces réunions à travers des années,
nos nouveaux membres étaient accueillis et plusieurs
introductions ont été faites. Et comme à la réunion dʼanciens
élèves, nous nous réunissons sur un point commun : celui
de notre fidélité à lʼAFH et à notre affinité pour la culture et la
langue françaises.
Je parle souvent de l'importance du leadership du conseil
dʼadministration dʼAFH, mais nos membres jouent aussi un
rôle important dans la réussite de notre association. Dans
mes commentaires du statut d'adhésion pendant notre
réunion, en référence à ce qu'il faut pour garder une
organisation comme la nôtre florissante, j'ai cité Bruce
Bochy, le Directeur général de l'équipe de base-ball des
Géants de San Francisco qui a gagné la Série Mondiale en
2012. Il a dit, « Quand vous faites face à un défi, la
coopération est un meilleur atout que lʼégoïsme. » Le joueur
fait de son mieux à chaque partie parce qu'il sait que cela a

un impact sur la performance totale de l'équipe. Cʻest
intéressant que certains des meilleurs joueurs frappent la
balle seulement 3 fois 1/2 sur 10 à la batte, donc faire de
son mieux ne veut pas dire frapper la balle chaque fois.
Et alors, cʼest pareil avec nos membres : si vous vous
rencontrez chaque semaine ou seulement une fois par mois,
si vous assistez à tous les événements ou juste un ou deux,
si vous organisez un dîner à la fortune du pot, ou inscrivez
votre enfant au Petit Atelier, vous ajoutez à notre succès
global. Vous soutenez l'organisation par lʼusage et la
participation comme les joueurs dʼune équipe de base-ball.
Et à la fin, tout le monde rentre à la maison avec un anneau
de la Série Mondiale. Donc continuez à garder l'Alliance
Française dʼHawaii vivante et renouvelez votre adhésion
pour une année de plus. Faites une promesse pour lʼavenir,
prenez une position, et frappez la balle !
Comme toujours, il y a beaucoup de personnes à remercier
pour tout leur temps et leur travail pendant l'année. Comme
2012 se termine, nos remerciements vont à Sarah Pouzet
pour nous avoir emmené dans le monde des réseaux
sociaux et son super travail sur notre page Facebook. Elle
fait une pause et se retire de notre conseil d'administration à
partir de la fin de décembre. Et comme nous attendons avec
impatience la nouvelle année, nous accueillons et
remercions Glenn Silva et Matt Lauzon dʼavoir rejoint le
conseil pour les deux prochaines années. Les deux ont servi
comme directeurs dans le passé, donc nous anticipons leur
expertise et leur expérience.
Lʼannée 2012 a été merveilleuse pour l'Alliance française
dʼHawaï grâce à vous tous. De la part du Conseil
d'administration de lʼAFH et de nos Régents, joyeuses fêtes
et nos meilleurs vœux pour 2013 !

French Conversation Group *schedule change alert
We have two informal conversation groups each week. One is on Saturday mornings from approximately 8-9:30 a.m. at
the Mocha Java Cafe at Ward Centre. The other group meets on Tuesday evenings from 6:30-8:30 p.m. at Burger King on
2536 S. Beretania St., by Longs Drugs. *Starting January 5, 2013, the Tuesday evening meetings will return to
Mocha Java at 10:30 a.m. - 1:30 p.m. Saturdays. Please join us to participate and practice speaking French.
French Language Class
On the first and third Saturday of each month we have a class at Mocha Java ($10 for AFH
members and $12 for non-members) taught by Regis Rolando, a native French speaker and
professor of French at Mid-Pac. The class takes place from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. Groupe de Lecture Lecteurs, lectrices! Sadly we are losing one of the leaders of our groupe de lecture as Mary Radnofsky leaves Hawaii.
The reading group will meet as usual on the second Monday of each month as Natalie Mahoney continues as one of
the animatrices and Deborah Forbis has volunteered to take Mary’s place. The next book to be discussed is La Fille de
M. Linh by Philippe Claudel. Philippe Claudel is a novelist, film director and university lecturer. He wrote and directed two
films Il y a longtemps que je t'aime (I've Loved You So Long) featuring Kristin Scott Thomas and Elsa Zylberstein, which
received two Césars and the 2008 BAFTA for Best Film Not in English, and Tous les soleils with Stefano Accorsi, Clotilde
Courau and Anouk Aimée. He is also the author of Âmes grises (Grey Souls), winner of the prix Renaudot and "book of the
year" 2003 by Lire magazine, and Rapport de Brodeck (Brodeck's Report), winner of the prix Goncourt des lycéens 2007 and
the 2010 Independent Prize for Fiction.

AFH Scholarship Thank You Letter
Chers membres de l’Alliance Française de Hawai`i "
Je vous écris pour vous remercier pour la bourse de l’Alliance Française que j’ai reçue
en mai. Je continue mes études en français à l’Université Lehigh à Bethlehem,
Pennsylvanie. Ce semestre, j’ai suivi un cours de niveau avancé de "composition". Mon
professeur a grandi au Maroc et a étudié en France avant de s’installer aux Etats-Unis où il
est professeur. Il s’intéresse beaucoup à la culture maghrébine et les liens entre l’Afrique du
nord et la France. Le cours que je suis maintenant m'aide à perfectionner la grammaire en
enseignant plusieurs de formes de composition. On a écrit un narratif, un essai, une
dissertation, un compte rendu, et puis on fera un commentaire composé. Au semestre de
printemps, je vais suivre un cours avancé de "conversation". Mon professeur enseigne un cours de

littérature algérienne que je compte suivre l’année prochaine. Je prépare un diplôme de français
comme "minor".

En plus, j’ai trouvé une occasion de pratiquer le français en dehors de mes cours. Je travaille avec un élève du 6e à
Broughal Middle School, le collège de sud Bethlehem. C’est un garçon du Sénégal qui s’appelle Moustapha. Il parle un dialecte
africain, le français, et l’anglais. Il parle assez bien anglais, mais il est mieux en français et parfois il ne comprend pas bien les
profs. Beaucoup d'élèves de cette école parlent espagnol comme langue maternelle, et donc plusieurs profs parlent espagnol, mais
personne ne parle français. Je l’aide avec ce qu’il ne comprend pas, et je lui donne de petites leçons d'anglais, et il m’aide en me
donnant l’occasion de pratiquer mon français. Je travaille avec lui environ quatre heures par semaine depuis quelques mois. Il est
curieux, il adore les maths, et il aime me parler de ses copains et de sa famille. Je l’aime bien. J’adore faire du bénévole à cette école
parce que je peux faire quelque chose avec mon français en aidant un jeune élève de la ville où j’étudie. C’est super !

AFH Fall Immersion Day . . . Au Micro!

“Dans une caverne sombre et poussièreuse, au milieu des serpents et des araignées habitait
une vieille, très vieille, très très vieille dame. Personne n’osait prononcer son nom, car, c’était
une . . . sorcière!”
The fall immersion day of October 27, 2012, showcased our young students of the
Alliance’s “Le Petit Atelier d’Enfants” who performed a fun-filled play in French that put all of us in the Halloween
spirit. In costume and replete with song and dance, they were the brave “firsts” who helped us pilot a new idea for
Immersion Day . . . le “Micro Libre” or Open Mic.
To further encourage and support our participants in practicing their French, we were delighted with the
outcomes of “Open Mic.” There were no lack of timid ones and the time we allotted for a “conferencier” was filled
with our own participants who were eager and prepared to go to the mic to share something in French. The sharing was
interesting and diverse – we heard poems (Jacques Prevert was an apparent favorite!), enjoyed little dramas, heard
songs and an important announcement of the upcoming 100th anniversary of Marcel Proust.
Students led the way! Following the Halloween presentation by AFH’s youngest learners from Le Petit Atelier
d’Enfants led capably by AFH’s teacher, Natali Jourdel, we had the opportunity to enjoy a play written and performed
by the students of Farrington High School advised by their teacher, Sandy Pyun. One of these students, Jose Luis, an
AFH high school scholarship applicant in 2011, admirably returns to Farrington to inspire students in their learning of
French. Faithful Alliance member, Rosanna Hsi presented on how she started learning French and why she enjoys and
appreciates the language. A group of Alliance colleagues had fun singing “La Seine” and an array of poems by Jacques
Prevert enchanted all of us.
Our fall immersion again welcomed all level of French speakers to enjoy a morning of practicing and
perfecting their French in an ambiance of encouragement and fun! Our francophones and francophiles participated,
representing all ages and diverse sectors of our community. We again featured our conversation groups capably led by
Michelle Caron, Kathryn Klingebiel, Richard Kurth, Francois Miller, Sandy Pyun, Malia Schlesser, and Marge
Yoshioka. We thank Hanahau’oli School for its charming venue.
When asked on the evaluation, “What did you learn the most from the Au Micro presentation,” one participant
wrote, “I learned that everyone has a talent and gift to contribute,” and another summed it up nicely by commenting,
briefly, “avoir courage!” Yes! It’s the only way to learn and Immersion Days provide this unique opportunity!

Nelly Hardy Memorial

Je me permets de rendre hommage à la vie de Nelly Hardy qui a quitté après plus
de neuf decades et qui nous laisse en heritage, son esprit remarquable. Sa vie
représente un trésor qui nous inspire et qui nous enrichit.
Depuis le début de l’Alliance Française d’Hawaii elle était membre distingué et
dévoué, prise en affection par ses amis d’Hawaii et d’ailleurs. A travers son
comportement, son expression et son élégance elle représentait la vraie culture
française.
Le gouvernement français a reconnu ses services par l’octroi de l’Ordre National du
Mérite. En particulier elle a joué un role clef dans l’établissement d’un monument
sur l’île de Maui en honneur de La Perouse, célèbre navigateur français.
Puis-je aussi souligner ses contributions comme resident
exemplaire de la communauté américaine et hawaiienne. Pendant des
années, elle était le guide à titre volontaire dans l’aquarium de Waikiki.
En vérité, elle personnifiait la cooperation franco-américaine.
Nelly Hardy occupera toujours une place spéciale dans nos cœur.
Que son esprit nous reste!

Hardy. For those of you who would like to pay your respects, her life will be celebrated at a service on December 4, 2012 at the
Star of the Sea Chapel at 10:30 AM. An Alliance Française of Hawaii scholarship fund has been established in her honor. If you

A First-time visit to Paris
As most of you know, I recently spent three weeks in Paris. Surprisingly,
since I have been working on speaking French for upwards of twenty years,
this was my first visit. You’ve probably heard that Paris is big and dirty* and
that the Parisians are snobs—all true. You’ve probably also heard that the
food in Paris is to-die-for and that the art, history and architecture of the
City of Light are all breath-taking—also all true.
So how does a fitness nut like myself stay in shape in a city that has very
few gyms and is known for it’s fabulous fare? When in Paris , do as the

Parisians, i.e., walk, walk, walk. My travelling companion noted that Paris is

not a city for the elderly or disabled. The sidewalks are narrow, and nearly
all the Metro and train stops are underground and accessible only by
stairs. By the time we left Paris, we’d been at a goodly number of those
underground stops at least once. We also climbed the 674 steps to the
second “etage” of the Eiffel Tower. We (well at least, I) would’ve climbed to the third stage except it was accessible only by elevator. We also went on a
bike tour of the grounds at Versailles and Monet’s Garden at Giverny.
Parisians are notably skinnier than Americans, and I think I’ve figured out
the reason. Take ice cream. A friend told us about a fabulous ice cream shop
on an island in the middle of the Seine River that flows through Paris. We
had no trouble finding the ice cream shop, but we were pretty surprised to
find that each of the two scoops that we purchased were not much bigger
than the size of the two-euro coin that each scoop cost! We quickly learned
that serving sizes (except for wine and bread) are usually small. We also quickly learned that often the first thing that catches your eye when
you walk into a food store is the shelves and shelves of wine—and it’s very
inexpensive. I’m not much of a wine drinker, but keeping in mind the
healthy-heart benefits, I managed to put away a couple (well, maybe three)

bottles. The wine went very well with all the fresh fruits and veggies that we
purchased at the open market a block from “our appartement.” This
particular open market was held twice a week, and we were told it is one of
the best in Paris. We also bought fresh-caught fish, bread, cheese and freshcut flowers (a dozen gorgeous roses for 10 euros).
I wouldn’t want to live in Paris , but it
was definitely a nice place to visit. I
hope I have the opportunity to go
again one day.

Beaujolais Nouveau 2012
Hello members of the Alliance Française and friends,
Thank you very much for coming to the Beaujolais nouveau gathering of the
Alliance Française at Sabrinaʼs Ristorante Italiano on November 15. This wonderful evening was
organized by Monique Delorme and Kimi Matar whose efforts were rewarded with a very nice
crowd. We all had a wonderful time and I want to take this opportunity to thank our chef
extraordinaire Stephano (Steve) and Sabrina for the excellent food and service.
