Capable of instant offense, Quezada tossed in 28 second half points en route to a

Lowhorn is ready to begin his USF career when the Dons take on Oklahoma in the
first round of the 2K College Hoops Classic. The Texas Tech transfer and Bay Area
native averaged 7.2 points and 3.9 rebounds per game as a freshman for the Red
Raiders and scored a career-high 20 points in a road loss to the Dons (12/3/05).

A new era in USF basketball began on April 22, 2004 when Jessie Evans, the highly
successful head basketball coach of Louisiana-Lafayette, was named Head Basketball
Coach of the Dons.
USF RETURNS TO THE POST-SEASON IN EVANS’ HILLTOP DEBUT
In his first season as USF's coach, Evans accomplished many goals. The Dons beat
five league champions, including No. 11 Gonzaga (WCC), St. Joseph's (Atlantic 10),
Penn (Ivy), Pacific (Big West) and Denver (Sun Belt). San Francisco also beat Big Sky
tournament champ Montana and remained impressive in thrilling losses to Stanford in
overtime at the Pete Newell Challenge and at No. 13 Gonzaga on a buzzer-beater in
the final seconds.
Evans also got the Dons into the postseason for the first time since 1998, as USF
hosted Denver and Cal State Fullerton in the NIT in 2005. USF became the first WCC
team to host a postseason contest.
Although the team dropped to an 11-17 record in his second season, Evans
continued to build his program by recruiting new players for the future.
USF BATTLE TESTED
USF played the role of road warriors in 2006-07, with a brutal schedule that saw them
play just 12 of 31 games at home. Despite the frequent flier miles, the Dons improved
to 13-18 in 2006-07 and posted a third place WCC finish (8-6). The Dons played NCAA
powers No. 4 Ohio State, Louisville, UNLV and New Mexico State on the road.
"Jessie has injected a lot of enthusiasm into the USF program," Dons Athletics
Director Debra Gore-Mann said. "He has done an excellent job of cultivating the Bay
Area basketball community. His recruitment of the best Bay Area athletes is definitely a
plus."
WILDCATS WIN THE NCAA TITLE
Evans (159-129 in 10 seasons) has been a consistent winner in his 30 years as a
coach. The coaching veteran helped build a dynasty as an assistant coach under Lute
Olson at Arizona. Evans spent nine seasons in Tuscon (1989-97), helping the Wildcats
to five Pac-10 titles, nine consecutive NCAA Tournament berths, two Final Fours
appearances and finally the 1997 NCAA Championship in his final year with the ‘Cats.
BASKETBALL IN THE BAYOU
Evans' final season at Louisiana-Lafayette (2003-04) was his third consecutive
20-win season as a head coach in the bayou, although the team later had to vacate
14 wins. That season, Evans' Ragin' Cajuns made their second NCAA tournament
appearance, where they lost 61-52 to No. 3 seed North Carolina State. In fact, five
of Louisiana's nine losses came on the road to NCAA powers Georgia Tech, Xavier,
Dayton, Arizona and North Carolina State.
Evans was honored by his fellow coaches with the 2003 NABC District 8 Division I
"Coach of the Year" regional award. It's the same prowess in coaching and recruiting
that makes Evans an asset for the Dons.
PERSONAL FILE:
Evans and his wife Nancy, a former counselor, have a daughter Jayda, who's a newly
published author of "Game On! How women's basketball took Seattle by Storm" and
sportswriter for The Seattle Times; and a son Jarret, who played three seasons at
Louisiana-Lafayette.

VINCE POLAKOVIC & JAY WATKINS NOT ELIGIBLE FOR OKLAHOMA TRIP: Senior
forward Vince Polakovic and sophomore forward Jay Watkins are not eligible for USF’s
season opening road trip to Oklahoma for the 2007 2K Sports College Hoops Classic
(Coaches vs. Cancer) and will not make the trip to Norman.
DANNY CAVIC - WCC’S TOP LONG DISTANCE GUNNER: Senior guard Danny
Cavic enters his final season in the Green and Gold focused on leading USF to the
top of the West Coast Conference standings. Despite battling a chronic back injury,
which hampered his mobility for most of the 2006-07 season, Cavic led the league in
3-point field goal percentage, converting on .462 (36-78) from long distance. Cavic is
the first Don to lead the league in long distance connections since Tomas Thompson
accomplished the feat in 1992. Cavic averaged 6.0 points, 3.4 rebounds and 0.7 assists
per game for the Dons last season and scored a career-high 19 points at Pepperdine
(1/15/07), converting on 4-of-5 from beyond the arc.
TRANSFERS READY TO COMPETE FOR THE DONS: Sophomore post player Dior
Lowhorn is set to make his much-anticipated debut on the Hilltop after red-shirting last
season under NCAA transfer rules. The Texas Tech transfer is expected to make an
immediate impact for the Dons this season and averaged 7.2 points and 3.9 rebounds
per game for the Red Raiders as a freshman. Sophomore post player Hyman Taylor will
also be eligible to play for the Dons this season after transferring to the Hilltop prior to the
2006-07 campaign. Taylor also sat out last season under NCAA transfer rules.
DONS LOOKING FOR A BIG SEASON FROM THE BIG CANUCK: Sophomore center
Jared Casey worked out hard during the summer and looks prepared to make an impact
for USF this season. The 6-11 Canadian averaged 1.1 points and 1.5 rebounds last year,
but has drawn raves from the Dons coaching staff during preseason workouts.
CHRISTIAN HERNANDEZ READY FOR AN ENCORE: Sophomore guard Christian
Hernandez made some big contributions for USF last season and figures prominently in
the back court mix once again in 2007-08. The former walk-on averaged 8.9 minutes in
29 games and scored a career-high five points at Saint Mary’s (2/19/07).
JAY WATKINS READY FOR SOPHOMORE SEASON: Sophomore forward Jay Watkins
enjoyed a strong first season for USF in 2006-07, averaging 6.2 points on .494 (78-158)
from the floor to go along with 3.5 rebounds and 0.4 blocks per game. For his efforts,
Watkins earned 2007 West Coast Conference Freshman Team honors. Watkins scored
a career-high 17 points in his Green and Gold debut against Sonoma State (11/11/06)
in his first career start and added 14 in a win at Sacramento State (11/14/06). Watkins
pulled down a career-high 10 rebounds at No. 4 Ohio State (11/20/06) and matched his
scoring standard in a home win against Loyola Marymount (2/12/07), pouring in 17 points
in 20 minutes of playing time.
VINCE POLAKOVIC LOOKING FOR STRONG FINISH: Senior forward Vince Polakovic
looks to finish his final season at USF on a high note. Entering his third season in the
Green and Gold, the former Northern Iowa transfer is expected to contribute for in
2007-08 on the front line. Polakovic averaged 2.0 points and 0.9 rebounds per game last
season and scored a USF career-high with 14 points at Fresno State (12/29/05).
WALKING IN MEMPHIS: Sophomore forward and Memphis native Jay Watkins will see
a familiar face in the USF back court this season. Freshman guard Myron Strong, who
teamed with Watkins at Hamilton High School, enters his first campaign in the Green and
Gold. The pair helped the Wildcats to an unblemished 39-0 record en route to the 2006
Tennessee state title and a No. 7 national ranking as Hamilton became the first Memphis
team in 31 years to finish a season unbeaten.
DONS NEWCOMERS LOOKING TO CONTRIBUTE: San Francisco added four
additional newcomers to the fold this season. Junior forward Dean Hadley, freshmen
guards Pierce Brooks, Kenny Perry and Myron Strong will bring plenty and talent and
energy to the Dons this season. Hadley is a 6-6 swingman, who comes to USF after
playing one season at Holmes Community College in Mississippi where he averaged 9.8
points, 5.6 rebounds, 3.2 assists and 2.7 steals per game. An all-state honorable mention
selection, Hadley originally attended IUPUI as a freshman, appearing in four games
during the 2005-06 season. Perry averaged 14.9 points and 6.5 assists at Vanier College
Prep as a senior and was named second team all-Nova Scotia when he recorded 20.8
points and 3.5 assists per contest during his sophomore campaign. A prep teammate of
current Dons forward Jay Watkins, Strong turned in an outstanding high school career
at Hamilton in Memphis, helping the Wildcats to a 39-0 record as a junior - the first time
in 31 years a Memphis prep team went undefeated. Strong averaged 20.0 points, 8.0
assists and 5.0 rebounds per game as a senior, lifting the Wildcats to a 22-9 record and a
district runner-up showing.

2006-07 USF DONS SEASON IN REVIEW
FREE-THROW UPS AND DOWNS:
The Dons inability to make free-throws
hurt them in league play this season and
especially in their two OT losses vs. Saint
Mary’s and Gonzaga. The tide looked to
have turned with USF making 28 of 31
(90.3%) at San Diego, 15-17 at Santa
Clara (88.2%) and 20-27 vs. Pepperdine
(74.1%). However, USF did not shoot 70%
in four of the last five games. Earlier this
season, USF went through a four game
period that started at Pepperdine
where they made just 50-84 free-throws
(59.5%) and they lost three of the four contests. The 13-22 (59.1%) vs. Saint Mary’s
and the 12-18 (66.7%) vs. SCU were
significant factors in two of USF’s losses.
In the recent Gonzaga OT loss, USF made
just 11 of 19 free-throws in regulation. They
made just 14-24 at Gonzaga. The Dons
made just 11-20 vs. Pepperdine, but were
able to survive. Free-throws were also
costly for USF in a tight losses to UCSB
(14-24) and Wyoming (18-27) earlier this
year. USF shot .704 (441-626) from the
line this season, third best in the WCC.
During league contests USF upped its
charity stripe efficiency to .715 (223-312),
good for third place on the WCC charts.
50% FG SHOOTING=WINS: USF shot the
ball very well in 2006-07, hitting .457 (8181789) of its field goals (third WCC) and
.372 (216-581) of its three-point attempts
(second WCC). Last year, the Dons shot
.429 floor. Last season USF posted a 10-2
record when it shot .500 or better from
the floor and when 3-15 when it failed to
convert on at least half of its attempts. USF
made .500 or better of its shots just four
times last season and just twice in 200405. On the opposite side, USF is 1-7 when
opponents make .500 of their shots, the
lone win coming at Portland (1/29/07).
GETTING OFFENSIVE: USF played more
of a high scoring, up-tempo game during
the 2006-07 season, averaging 74.2 points
per contest compared to 69.1 ppg. last
year. Also of note, USF shot .500 or better
12 times this year after shooting .500 or
better a total of six times over the past two
seasons.
THE CITY’S TEAM: USF basketball is
“The City’s Team,” The only major winter
sports team playing in the City. But it is
also the Bay Area’s team as the Dons have
four local players on the roster including
redshirt Dior Lowhorn. USF won back-toback national championships in 1955 and
1956 behind Bay Area stars Bill Russell,
K.C. Jones, Mike Farmer, etc. and has a
tradition of great local players including
Phil Smith, Bill Cartwright, Kevin Restani,
Darrell Tucker, etc.
CAVIC AND POLAKOVIC STARS OFF
THE FLOOR, TOO: USF junior forwards
Danny Cavic and Vince Polakovic were
named to the 2007 West Coast Conference All-Academic Team as announced
by the league office. It is the second
career honor for Cavic, a Business major.
Polakovic is an International Business
major. The two selections are the most for
the Dons since Booker T. Harris and M.J.
Nodillo were recognized for the adacemic
excellence in 1998.
DEFENSE AND REBOUNDS: In USF’s
13 wins they have allowed opponents to
score 70.7 points per game while in the 17
losses they have allowed 79.9. USF has
been out-rebounded by 2.1 in their wins
and by 5.5 in the losses.
THAT’S TOO MUCH: USF allowed 80
points or more in 11 games during the
2006-07 season and lost nine of them. The
Dons went 7-2 when they held opponents
under 70 points.
DONS GET FIRST EVER 6-0 SWEEP OF
SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA SCHOOLS:
San Francisco recorded a perfect 6-0 regular season record against Loyola Marymount, San Diego and Pepperdine for the
first time since the Toreros joined the West
Coast Conference.
LOTS OF TELEVISION: San Francisco
made a remarkable 12 television appearances during the 2006-07 season. The
Dons showcased their skills on ESPN, ESPNU, ABC, Comcast Sports Net and Fox
Sports Net. 10 of USF’s 14 West Coast
Conference contests were televised. USF
made their ESPN2 “Big Monday” debut
at Saint Mary’s and the Dons game at
home against Gonzaga was nationally televised on ABC.
ALL-WCC HONORS: Alan Wiggins, Jr.,
a fourth year senior from San Diego, was
named first team all-West Coast Conference in a poll of the league’s coaches.
Teammates Armondo Surratt and Antonio
Kellogg were named honorable mention,
while Jay Watkins was named to the allfreshman team. Wiggins recorded his second straight outstanding season averaging
14.4 points and 7.1 rebounds per game and
led the league with eight double-doubles on
the season and was among the conference
leaders in field goal percentage at 52.6%,
free-throw percentage 74.0% and blocked
shots at 1.5. Surratt, who missed USF’s last
five conference games after a knee injury,
averaged 14 points and 3.5 assists per
game as a senior. Kellogg had an outstanding season in the Green and Gold leading
the team in scoring at 15.4 points per game
USF MEN’S BASKETBALL RELEASE PAGE SIX
USF DEF. SAN FRANCISCO STATE 91-61: Sophomore forward Dior Lowhorn and junior
guard Manny Quezada combined for 55 points and led USF to a 71-66 exhibition victory
against a determined Sonoma State squad Saturday afternoon at War Memorial Gym.
The Dons shot .423 (22-52) from the field and limited the Seawolves to .327 (18-55).
Lowhorn did not disappoint in his first exhibition contest in his Green and Gold career,
turning in a 28-point, 12 rebound performance. The Texas Tech transfer sat out all last
season under NCAA transfer rules and responded went 11-of-21 from the field, 5-of-7 at
the stripe to go along with a block and a steal in 38 minutes. Quezada pumped in 27 – 24
after the intermission – and added six rebounds and a pair of assists. Sophomore forward
Dean Hadley scored seven points off the bench for the Dons. USF trailed by four at the
break, 29-25, but outscored Sonoma 46-37 in the second period in the Dons final tune-up
before opening the regular season Thursday, November 8. Junior guard Keith Garner
scored a team-high 16 points for Sonoma State, while freshman forward Blake Saunders
added 12 points off the bench for the Seawolves.
USF IN SEASON OPENERS: Since 1985-86, San Francisco owns a 12-10 record in
season openers. The Dons have two of their last four lid-lifters, including a 87-77 victory
against Sonoma State (11/11/06). Before breaking through for a 73-62 victory against
Tennessee-Martin in the 2003 Guardian’s Classic, the USF had dropped four consecutive
season debuts. The Dons most lopsided win came in the 1986-87 kickoff - a 64-19
pasting of St. Thomas (Minnesota).
DONS NOTCH PROGRAM VICTORY NUMBER 1,180: San Francisco collected the
1,180th victory in program history in a 70-67 West Coast Conference victory against
Portland (2/26/07). In the 94th season of basketball on the Hilltop, the Dons have their
eyes set on 2,000 program victories.
