The harbor becomes the stage for a morbidly fascinating game where lovehate relationships thrive, with Querelle as both game-master and pawn. Inspired by Jean Genet's work, "Querelle de Brest", the film is as bizarre and spell-binding as the novel. They are immediatly taken with Frédérique's saucy innocence. One of the men invites her to accompagny him on a business trip to Japan. Frédérique agrees out of provocation, but the trip turns out to be an overture to tragedy.
