(Watching French TV helps, also.) Here are a few websites for classes that may fit your skill and schedule. These are only a few of the programs that are available. ISP’s very own Laetitia Beser, Berlitz trained, offers instruction in her home. These small classes are a good way to meet other ISP parents and learn how to get by in daily life. 06 81 77 5286 [email protected] These are the English-language links for language programs, but most of them are also accessible to speakers of German, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, Chinese, Japanese, or Russian. www.alliancefr.org/en www.france-langue.com/paris/ www.accord-langues.com/ www.ccfs-sorbonne.fr/?lang=en www.inter7.fr www.frenchasyoulikeit.com www.frenchandparis.com/accueil www.en.icp.fr/about-icp/discover-icp/faculties-institutes/the-french-languageand-culture-institute-in-paris-ilcf-15996.kjsp There are also free French classes sponsored by the Mairie (City Hall) of Paris -http://next.paris.fr/english/guide-for-foreign-residents/the-necessary-steps-tosettling-in/learning-french/rub_8145_stand_33669_port_18796. 7 LIVING Transportation-Public The public transportation within Paris and suburbs is called the RATP (Regie Autonome des Transports Parisians). Below is an explanation of the various types of services that are offered. You can purchase tickets (individual or a book of 10 (“carnet”) for a reduced rate) at your local Metro stop or at a Tabac store with the RATP sign (“carnet” only). RATP Information is available in English, French, Italian, German, Dutch, and Spanish www.ratp.fr . Metro Runs daily from 5:30 AM to 0:30 and to 2:00 AM on Saturday nights. Can be utilized within the Paris Metro Area. RER Runs from 5:30 AM to 0:30 AM Gives you access to more outreaching areas of Paris. Bus Runs from 6:30 AM to 8:30 PM. Some bus lines run 24 hours. Please check the bus maps at your local metro stop for more information. You can use one ticket and transfer to a different bus if the ticket is reused within the hour. Vélib’ Take a bike, return it where you like, Vélib’ is a self-service bike system available 24 hours a day, all year round. To access the service, buy a 1-day or a 7-day ticket online or at any Vélib’ station or sign-up for a long-term subscription. www.en.velib.paris.fr/How-it-works Autolib’ Autolib’ is a rentable electric car also run by the City of Paris. Student cards are available at a reduced yearly rate. www.navigo.fr/ 8 LIVING Transportation-Taxi/Smartphone Apps/Rental Cars TAXI There are three ways to utilize taxis now in Paris. The first is to go to a taxi stand or flag a taxi from the street. The second, you can phone Taxis G7 or Taxi Bleus, and the third, (and currently more popular) way to obtain a taxi, is by iPhone or Smartphone apps. To order, you can call the English line listed below (G7). You can choose family cabs, maxi cabs, English drivers, etc. You can also set up an account and from then on, reserve a taxi by phone without having to speak to an operator. 01 41 27 66 99 www.g7.fr/en/ 08 91 70 10 10 www.taxisbleus.com/index.php/en/ SMARTPHONE APPS You can search for them under your app store on your Smartphone. Once the app is downloaded, it will walk you through how to obtain a taxi. You must provide your credit card information to use these services. These services are quite popular because the cars are usually cleaner and they charge your card so no cash is necessary. The most popular Apps are: UBER LeCab RENTAL CARS The major rental car companies have offices in Paris. Check the Internet for your favorite company for locations. Passports may be needed for the contract. Cars available on an hourly basis (gas and insurance included) www.mobizen.fr www.connectbyhertz.com 9 LIVING Transportation-Drivers License//Low-Cost Airlines FRENCH DRIVER’S LICENSE From a US state that has a reciprocal agreement 1. Find if the state is reciprocal. (Subject to change) www.ambafranceus.org/spip.php?article376 2. You are technically supposed to have been in possession of your US driver's license for one year before coming to France. Do not try to trade your California driver's license (non-reciprocating) for a Pennsylvania license (reciprocating) in the US one week before coming to France and expect them to accept the Pennsylvanian one for trade, for example. 3. You have ONE YEAR from the start of your work visa to obtain a reciprocal driver's license. You must officially start the process 3 months before the end of that one year term. After that, you are not allowed to obtain the license-- you must start fresh and take the test like everyone else. 4. You will need to go to the Prefecture de Police (Porte de Clignancourt on Boulevard Ney, 75018). You can call ahead for an appointment or just show up and they will direct you to the correct location. This process could take hours. Avoid bringing small children. 5. Once you have submitted everything required, they will give you a paper asking you to return in about a month to pick up your license. To pick it up, you will need to go to the same location. Don't be surprised if picking up the license takes more than an hour. If you are coming from a US state that has no reciprocal agreement 1. After one year from your work permit date, you must apply and take the French license exam. This website (which is in French) will detail out what is required for a French Drivers license. http://vosdroits.service-public.fr/particuliers/F1459.xhtml 2. You must attend a driver’s school and then take a written and driving test. The process can take months. Here is an expat friendly driving school to get you started. http://www.aegide-drive.com/ LOW-COST AIRLINES Besides the major international airlines serving Charles de Gaulle (Roissy (CDG)) or Orly (ORY), there are three low-cost airlines serving Europe. All have multiple language web-sites. 1. www.easyjet.com 2. www.vueling.com 3. www.ryanair.com (Serving Beauvais-Tille airport (BVA)) 10 LIVING Check Writing Check writing is still very common in France but a little confusing if you haven’t written one before. Below is a sample check with explanations, along with the most common numbers written out. Number Spelling for Checks 1: un 2: deux 3: trois 4: quatre 5: cinq 6: six 7: sept 8: huit 9: neuf 10: dix 11: onze 12: douze 13: treize 14: quartoze 15: quinze 16: seize 17: dix-sept 18: dix-huit 19: dix-neuf 20: vingt 21: vingt et un 22: vingt-deux 23: vingt-trois 24: vingt-quatre 25: vingt-cinq 26: vingt-six 27: vingt-sept 28: vingt-huit 29: vingt-neuf 30: trente 40: quarante 50: cinquante 60: soixante 70: soixante-dix 71: soixante-onze 72: soixante-douze 80: quatre-vingts 81: quatre-vingts-un 90: quatre-vingts-dix 91: quatre-vingts-onze 100: cent 200: deux cent 1000: mille 2000: deux-mille Check Writing Tips • French checks must be written in French • On the left side of French checks is a space to write some brief information about the amount and type of check. It will be located on the left side of the check near the perforated edge. • Try not to leave space at the beginning or end of your check for fraud reasons. Often, people will put ///// marks so no additional numbers or words could be added to the checks • NEVER carry a booklet of checks with you in your purse or aroud Paris if possible. It is always best to fill the check at home or carry one with you for a specific purpose. 11 LIVING Repair Daniel Cachada General masonry such as painting, electricity, kitchen installments, etc. 06 18 24 88 70 Raphael Mizel (Handyman) [email protected] 06 50 43 65 09 Alex (Handyman) 06 59 79 03 27 Maxim (Handyman) 06 26 63 67 35 IT Support Randy comes highly recommended by ISP parents. For “medium rare”, order it “saignant”. “A pointe” is medium. Use “rose” for medium rare if ordering duck or veal. 45 Last Thoughts & Tips Miscellaneous •Make sure to empty the “extra” lint drawer at the bottom of your dryer at least once a month. (You already know to empty the dryer water reservoir and lint tray….) •Washing machines require an anti-calcium tablet to avoid build-up in the lines. These can be purchased at your local grocery store. •Check into getting a VPN (Virtual Private Network) to access web sites and video streaming services that are restricted to the US (Hulu, HBO Go, etc.) •If lost, go to a bus stop. There are maps of the vicinity to help you find your way. •Don’t be afraid to talk to your local vendors to practice your French! And become part of your neighborhood. Tipping—A service charge is automatically added to the bill (l’addition). Although not required, some people feel obligated to tip. Leave the small change in a café, say .20- .50 centimes and then a few extra Euros for dinner. Depending on the service, 1-5 €, per person, is appropriate. http://www.justlanded.com/english/France/Articles/Culture/Tipping-in-France http://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-28793677 http://www.bonjourparis.com/story/tipping-etiquette-France/ http://www.coolstuffinparis.com/tipping_in_paris_france.php •Most importantly, if you have questions, feel lonely or want to get together for a coffee, reach out to someone. We’ve all been there! Enjoy your time in the City of Light! Saving 4 Euros or More Restaurants are required by law to supply excellent tasting Paris tap water upon request. Instead of buying expensive bottled water or a soda, say “Carafe d’eau, s’il vous plait” and pocket that money! 46 And When it’s Time to Go Moving When it’s time to leave, here are a few tips: Request Pick up of Old Furniture (Do not deposit it on your doorstep, you risk a fine up to 1500Euros!!!) https://teleservices.paris.fr/sira/jsp/site/Portal.jsp?page=formengine&form= ramen Donate Old Clothes and Furniture http://donnons.org http://www.emmaus-france.org http://english.secourspopulaire.fr Freelance Mover Mr. Patham 06 43 16 60 54 Home Contracts 1. Home Phone/Internet/Cable: Call the service provider (3900 if Orange) and state the day to terminate the contract. Take the Orange box to any Orange store. They will give you a ticket (bon de resiliation) to prove all the materials have been returned. 3. Mobile phone: Call the operator (Orange: dial 3970 from a landline or 700 from a mobile) and ask for termination of service (resiliation de service). Terminate 10 days in advance, as services won’t terminate until then. 4. House insurance: Terminate 30 days in advance; otherwise, they will charge for an additional 30 days. 5. Letters and parcels etc.: To redirect mail to a new address. Go to the post office with IDs of all persons in your household or via internet (no need for IDs).
