In Europa wurde der Quoten-Hit, eine Mischung aus Stand-up, Sketch-Show und Live-Performance, auf MTV ausgestrahlt. Als Dave Chappelles Verträge 2004 verlängert – und seine Bezüge erheblich aufgebessert – wurden, nahm er dies zum Anlass, das freudige Ereignis im Rahmen einer kleinen „Nachbarschaftsparty“ in Brooklyn zu feiern. Michael Gondry hat die Vorbereitungen und das Fest mit der Kamera beobachtet. Nur so viel stand am Anfang fest: Die angesagtesten Acts sollten dabei sein, die Party-Location würde bis zuletzt geheim gehalten werden, es würde keine Eintrittskarten geben, keine Werbung, alles sollte ausschließlich über die informellen Netzwerke der Community ablaufen. Ganz am Anfang führt Chappelles Weg nach Cleveland, Ohio: Hier, wo er aufgewachsen ist, verteilt er Einladungen unter seinen ehemaligen Nachbarn, außerdem engagiert er eine Marschkapelle für die Party. Er setzt sich auch selbst ans Klavier, obwohl er freimütig bekennt, dass er ein lausiger Musiker ist. Am Tag der Party sieht es so aus, als würde schlechtes Wetter ihm einen Strich durch die Rechnung machen – aber gegen Chappelles FreestyleWitz bläst selbst der stärkste Wind vergebens. Kanye West, Mos Def, Erykah Badu… sie alle zeigen eine klasse Show. Und dann kommt mit den Fugees der Überraschungsgig und Höhepunkt des Abends: Zum ersten Mal seit 1997 stehen Lauryn Hill, Pras und Wyclef Jean wieder gemeinsam auf der Bühne. „Dies“, erklärt Dave Chappelle, „ist das Konzert, das ich schon immer mal erleben wollte.“ Wer wollte das nicht? Es folgten Clips für Björk, The Chemical Brothers, Massive Attack, Daft Punk, Cibo Matto und viele andere. 2001 entstand nach einem Drehbuch von Charlie Kaufman sein erster Spielfilm HUMAN NATURE. Für ETERNAL SUNSHINE OF THE SPOTLESS MIND wurde er als Co-Autor neben Kaufman 2004 mit einem Oscar ausgezeichnet. He stayed with the band until 1992, making two albums, several singles and directing his first music videos. He subsequently made promos for Björk, The Chemical Brothers, Massive Attack, Daft Punk, Cibo Matto and many others. He made his first feature film, HUMAN NATURE, based on a screenplay by Charlie Kaufman, in 2001. He and co-writer Kaufman received an Oscar in 2004 for ETERNAL SUNSHINE OF THE SPOTLESS MIND. At the outset the only givens are: all the hot acts will appear, the party location will be kept a secret until the last moment, there will be no entrance tickets, no advertising, and everything will be communicated via the informal community network. The first thing Chappelle does is take a trip to Cleveland, Ohio, where he grew up. He distributes invitations to his ex-neighbours and organises a brass band for the party. He even sits down at the piano himself, although he freely admits that he is a lousy musician. On the day of the party, it looks as though bad weather is about to thwart Chappelle’s plans – but even the strongest wind is not enough to blow Chappelle’s free-wheeling humour off course. Kanye West, Mos Def, Erykah Badu… all put on a terrific show. And then the Fugees appear for a surprise gig – the crowning event of the evening. For the first time since 1997, Lauryn Hill, Pras and Wyclef Jean walk out on stage together. “This”, explains Dave Chappelle, “is the concert I always wanted to see.” And who wouldn’t?
