We also managed to swell our order book with several important contracts in various sectors. These include the mission control center of the SWARM satellite constellation, implementation of infrastructure for the Military Information System, the XHTML translation of El Quijote (Don Quixote) and the new onboard communication and control equipment of local and medium-haul trains. This last contract is the most recent award by the Spanish railway network RENFE, to be added to the previous contracts of AVE (Spanish high speed) and long-haul trains and goods trains. All this means we can start 2009 with an upbeat mood and the brightest prospects. The start of this year has also marked the beginning of a new managerial stage in GMV, with the appointment of Jesús Serrano as new CEO of the business group. He takes over from the outgoing CEO Luis Mayo, who, after a long and brilliant career in GMV, has decided to take up a new career challenge elsewhere. Jesús Serrano has been linked to GMV since its very foundation and has hitherto held top responsibility for our Space and Defense subsidiary, doubling its turnover during his mandate. At the helm of GMV he is sure to be the driving force behind new growth, new developments and new improvements. During 2009 we will continue to develop new groundbreaking solutions to harness the many business opportunities detected in the technology market. GMV's diversity and the sheer depth of its knowhow mean that it its capability of developing these opportunities is second to none. This year we are also planning to make a hefty investment in increasing our worldwide profile. Cordial Greetings, Un cordial saludo, © GMV, 2009 GMV NEWS nº40 january 09 I pag. 3 ARTÍCULO / ARTICLE NOVEDAD MUNDIAL PRIMER CONECTOR BLACKBERRY CON CORREO LINUX GMV DEVELOPS WORLD’S FIRST BLACKBERRY-LINUX CONNECTOR A LITTLE BACKGROUND HISTORY By the late eighties we engineers working in GMV already had access to internet. Connected up to the incipient Spanish node “Goya” (and from there to the central EUNET node in Holland) we regularly used some of the available services back then. I well remember how some of us followed the (debunked) 1989 announcement of cold fusion from the University of Utah, using the news service and the “alt.fusion” newsgroup. That is probably a good example of the closest we could come at that time to almost instant worldwide information, some years before the invention of the World Wide Web. But the simplest internet service we used was email. Nowadays, in the world of Google Earth and Second Life, no one uses the news service on a regular basis but email, far from becoming obsolete, has gone from strength to strength, growing from a useful resource into an absolutely critical collaboration tool for all modern organizations and institutions. Despite the formidable array of the World Wide Web, the humble email, which accounted for 75% of ARPANET traffic in 1978, is still today's most important internet application by number of users, adding up to several hundred million throughout the whole world. Today's email service is still basically similar to the original brainchild of the ARPANET contractor Ray Tomlinson who proposed in 1972 that the @ symbol should be used for sending messages from one computer to another. Nonetheless, there have undoubtedly been breakthroughs and new developments over the years, and we have gone a long way from the original Eudora client to today's panoply of email clients. Of all these breakthroughs, however, none seems as potentially mold-breaking as the new opportunity now offered by the advent of mobile telephony in our lives over the last decade: mobile email. The development of mobile email has been highly dependent over these years on two factors: the evolution of wireless communication technologies (GSM, GPRS, and, more recently, the 3G, UMTS or HSDPA technologies) and the trend in terminals. Newcomers to the world of mobile email will probably regard it as obvious that such a service is not possible UN POCO DE HISTORIA A finales de los años 80, los ingenieros que trabajábamos en GMV ya disponíamos de acceso a Internet. Unix without a “more or less broad” band network and a “more or less modern” terminal in which an email client can be run. Readers might therefore be shocked to learn that, by 1999, it was already possible to send and receive emails and even browse websites (with limitations) from a handheld. All courtesy of the Canadian firm Research In Motion (RIM). The explanation of this conundrum probably resides in the fact that this company, RIM, originally traded in the pagers sector rather than phones. As far back as 1992, RIM possessed the technology that allowed pagers not only to receive messages but also to send them. The co-founder of RIM, Mike Lazaridis, was determined to develop this capacity until making it a key technology capable of sending and receiving emails over wireless networks. In 1996, the same year in which Microsoft launched the first version of its Exchange mail server, RIM marketed its first mobile email managing device, RIM-900 or “Inter@ctive Pager”. In 1998, the most advanced version of this device, called RIM-950, used in conjunction with the BlackBerry service, facilitated integration with the corporate Exchange server for enciphering and reformatting the email for the handheld. The upshot was the world's first experience of mobile email. Ten years later nearly 20 million users around the world habitually use a BlackBerry handheld. LINUX EMAIL The appearance of the BlackBerry service was linked to Microsoft's Exchange email server. Although the service was later made available for the IBM Lotus email server, and more recently for Novell's GroupWise server, RIM never developed a similar access capacity for other email services. Specifically, RIM never developed a solution for connecting up with email architectures based on open source software and run on Linux platforms. For many reasons, however, these architectures abound nowadays. The historical development of email has gone hand in hand with the development of Unix-type operating systems. Unix was invented by a group of AT&T employees in Bell Labs in 1969, the same year in which ARPANET began. In 1979 the Delivermail email server, forerunner of Sendmail, was included in the Unix 4.0BSD version. In 1982, when ARPANET switched from the NCP network protocol to TCP/IP, email servers ceased to use FTP and the new email sending protocol SMTP appeared on the scene, remaining front stage right down to our days. This was a milestone in the development of standard email protocols. Email then became inexorably linked to the development of different Unix versions, although it was just about to latch on to a new emerging concept that turned out to be revolutionary: open source or free-distribution software. The landmark event in this history came in 1991. Two years had passed since our interesting experiences with Internet and the “alt.fusion” newsgroup and in GMV we were working, among other things, on the cross compilation of the new processors fue inventado por los laboratorios Bell de AT&T en 1969, el mismo año en que empezó ARPANET. 5 ARTÍCULO / ARTICLE Intel 386 and 486. Our attention had switched to other newsgroups, including “comp.os.minix”, in which Linus Torvalds announced in August that he was working on a new operating system for the Intel 386 and 486 processors. The intention was to distribute it freely and openly since it did not include Tanenbaum's restricted-distribution Minix source code. One month later his colleague in Helsinki University, Ari Lemmke, gave it the name of Linux. In December 1992 the Linux code was distributed freely under the groundbreaking GNU GPL licence. Among many other things, the appearance of Linux enabled free email servers to be installed in personal computers, now spreading at headlong speed. Today Linux is present in many domains, ranging from embedded systems to supercomputers. In any case, either driven by Linux, or for historical, economic or any other reasons, the fact is that Linux-based email servers, interoperable using SMTP, POP and IMAP standards, now boast a significant share of email servers around the world. Almost inevitably, the need of mobile email was first felt by the users of these email systems. MOBILE EMAIL IN LINUX As we have already seen RIM never developed a system for connecting a Linux email server to its handhelds, as existed for other email servers. Así, pese a que las dificultades que hicieron a otros desistir se hicieron patentes rápidamente, nos mobile email solutions for Linux, usually based on the development of mobile clients, almost always open source, such as Funambol. The sheer variety of cell phones and mobile operating systems, however, together with the lack of flat rate schemes for procuring general data communication channels, have hindered these initiatives. In recent years the mobile email technology developed and widely distributed by Microsoft Windows Mobile also turned its back on Linux email. BlackBerry users, enjoying the best mobile email service to judge from the millions who swear by it, seemed to be definitively sidelined by the “historical names” of email. Until now, that is. UNITING LINUX AND BLACKBERRY In early 2006, Vodafone España contacted GMV to find out its opinion about a suitable mobile email solution for the Regional Council of Andalusia (Junta de Andalucía). Years earlier GMV had installed the Junta's email system and was therefore perfectly familiar with it. The Junta's email system was based on Linux, serving over 100,000 users by means of a complex architecture taking in over two dozen servers. GMV checked through the possibilities and then zoomed in on the BlackBerry solution. The initial analysis clearly showed that this solution was incompatible with the Junta's Linux-based architecture. This analysis also pinpointed a clear opportunity, however. If GMV could develop a connector between a BlackBerry corporate server and a Linux email architecture like the Junta de Andalucía's, it could not only come up with a better response to the Junta's mobile email needs but also open up a whole new market. GMV's contacts with RIM made it clear that such a solution had already been attempted with little success by other companies all round the world. After weighing up the risks and possibilities, GMV decided to invest in an inhouse R&D project to develop a solution. In autumn 2006 the initial feasibility analysis had discovered a possible way of developing a BlackBerry-Linux connector, to which we gave the name of Atlas GMV. In Spring 2007 GMV came to an agreement with Vodafone España for offering atlas GMV to Vodafone's clients in Spain. One of GMV's watchwords is “to succeed where others fail”. Thus, undaunted by the difficulties that others had balked at, we rapidly took out patents and began to discern light at the end of the tunnel. The develop of atlas GMV was by no means trouble free: technological difficulties, many delays and an improvable management of expectations have marked the project and have given us a splendid chance to learn from our own mistakes. But the endeavors finally paid off: Thirty months, two versions of the product and many hours of work later, atlas GMV has been successfully put through its paces in a pilot scheme in the Junta de Andalucía. mismo los mejores modelos y canales para comercializar atlas GMV en todo el mundo. THE FUTURE OF ATLAS GMV At this moment the development of atlas GMV continues, with the aim not only of providing a mobile email service but also achieving synchronization of the BlackBerry handheld for managing the corporate agenda and contacts, all using open source solutions on Linux. In the near future atlas GMV will also offer the possibility, currently in testing phase, of displaying attached files on the handheld with OpenOffice format. All these features make atlas GMV a unique product in the world. GMV, now one of RIM's “Solution Provider Plus” partners, is studying jointly with RIM and Vodafone España the best models for providing backup and maintenance of our product. We are also seeking the best models and outlets for marketing atlas GMV throughout the world. According to a 2007 study by Ken Simpson and Stas Bekman (http://www.oreillynet.com/pub/a/sysadmin/ 2007/01/05/fingerprinting-mail-servers.html) out of a total of 400,000 domains surveyed, over 30% of them still receive their email via open source mail server software. We now face another sterling challenge, less technological in nature but no less thrilling: ensure enough commercial success to recoup the large R&D outlay, following the example set by GMV's earlier inhouse success stories such as focusGEO, insight® or PalView®. esforzamos en ver la luz al final del túnel. He considers it to be a sector for people with an open, forward-looking mind who embrace change instead of resisting it. When and how did you strike up your relationship with the technology world? I was born in a small Murcia town called Blanca in the River Segura valley. The first ever hydroelectric power plant of the River Segura was built in my town and my father Jesús and my uncle Rafael were employed on plant maintenance all their lives. I was therefore born into a family that, in local parlance, “brought electric light to the town” and grew up in close relationship with the first great technological construction of my local area. My granddad, as it happens, was even nicknamed “Galileo” precisely because he was reckoned to have brought electric light to the town. It grew out of a merger between the National Association of Electronic and Telecommunications Industries (Asociación Nacional de Industrias Electrónicas y de Telecomunicaciones: ANIEL) and the Spanish Association of Information Technology Companies (Asociación Española de Empresas de Tecnologías de la Información: SEDISI). We are a sector-based organization, i.e., we represent all the companies, organizations and business groups whose economic activity is bound up with electronics, information technologies and telecommunications in Spain. The sector, which started out as electronics only, has thence grown and branched out into other fields. At first it involved only physical electronics and valve electronics and then became logical and digital. It began to spread into many different fields and we at AETIC have managed to keep pace with the sector, becoming a benchmark association not only in Spain but also Europe wide. Never resting on our laurels we have always been proactive and trailblazing, setting examples for others to follow. Our fee-paying direct members add up to over 300 and at least 3000 indirect tanto nací relacionado con el primer gran ingenio tecnológico de mi tierra. 9 ENTREVISTA / INTERVIEW members have been built up from alliances with regional organizations of small and medium-sized firms that work with us. Our associates belong to one or several of the six groups that make up AETIC. All associates feel comfortable grouped together with others of like mind sharing common interests and objectives. The groups are: consumer electronics, electronic components, professional electronics, telecommunications industry, operators and providers of telecommunication services and information technologies. Besides the groups, AETIC's structure is topped up with five committees that act in areas of common interest to all the companies: market development, sector services, sector promotion, environment and innovation and technological development. Companies are motivated by their AETIC membership because it gives them many sector-wide actions and affairs to carry out and deal with. The aspects that we have recently developed with most success include the platforms, i.e., scientific-technological cooperation networks pooling organizations that are interested in a specific area and who mobilize a critical R&D mass. In AETIC we have become a leading light in this matter. We took the lead and we are setting the right example. Whoever wants to set up a platform asks us how we do it because we at AETIC boast a long track record, the companies are all technological, our own executives come from the sector and this sector is replete with telecommunication engineers, physicists, IT experts, people who know about technology. We aim to make these platforms (the word was coined by us) launching pads for small and medium-sized firms, not only the major corporations. Our goal is to kindle Spanish participation in European programs and institutions, promote ideas for R&D projects and draw up and keep up to date the strategic research agenda... What are the Spanish technology networks and platforms? Success nowadays depends on pushing back frontiers and tackling new goals. This is how we have survived. If you look at your own history you will see that you too have survived not by sticking to hidebound methods that are twenty years out of date but by evolving with the times. Likewise AETIC. The word “crisis” is on everyone's lips at the moment. What is our sector's role in this context? Spain is living through a threefold crisis, financial, energy and real estate. Financial because Spain is the developed economy most dependant on saving levels abroad. Spain needs each year to be loaned 20% en una asociación de referencia no sólo en España sino a escala europea. 10 I GMV NEWS nº40 enero 09 of its GDP, 10% for financing the trade deficit (it exports less than it imports) and another 10% to finance the public debt. This external financing need has to be cut down to reduce the effect of the crisis, improving the trade balance. There are two approaches here: importing less or exporting more. Importing less is not advisable since it would represent a disaster for the Spanish economy. We therefore have to up our exports. If we look at the countries Spain needs to try to emulate, i.e., the leading European exporters like Germany, England, France, Holland, Sweden, we find that between 20 and 25% of exports are made up by technology products, whereas this figure drops to 5.7% for Spain. For as long as this situation remains we have a chronic problem, because we fare pretty well in other exporting areas. Another very important aspect here is energy. Spain's wealth-producing economy is very wasteful in its energy use. Furthermore this energy has to be brought in from outside so Spain is both energy inefficient and dependant. This is a need for a national program to improve our energy efficiency, with goals that are perfectly measurable over time, the whole electronics industry pulling together to produce new technologies that improve energy use. If Spain does so, it would first be able to save energy, secondly it would participación española en los programas e instituciones europeas, promocionar ideas de proyectos de I+D+i, elaborar y mantener actualizada la Agenda Estratégica de Investigación, etc. The third dimension is the property crisis. The real estate sector has been the most productive in terms of job generation and wealth creation in recent years. It grew to occupy a huge space and, after the sector's slump, this gap will now have to be filled by another activity. Here is where we come into our own because no other sector can match our growth capacity. It would also be a very virtuous growth, fuelling not only GDP growth but also per capita income growth. This is what makes countries rich and our sector is the one that generates the most stable, highly skilled and best-paid jobs. The best thing that can happen to Spain, therefore, is for everyone to work in our sector. Spain's threefold crisis will therefore be a great chance for our sector if politicians are capable of making this analysis and weighing up the consequences. Politicians in Spain lately are wont to speak of innovation and technology but this then turns out to be only lip service as they continue to favor the old economy over the new in their political and economic decisions. What measures could the government take to give specific support to our sector? Two things need to be done simultaneously: firstly to set up as soon as possible a venture capital industry so that no new technological idea falls on fallow ground due to lack of resources. Secondly, Spain should carry out a campaign to attract worldwide talent. It is a country that pretty much sells itself; it is a developed country with a high quality of life where people find it pleasant to live. Instead of tapping into these strengths to attract new talent for companies that need it, however, the government tends un 5,7%. 11 ENTREVISTA / INTERVIEW to block our access to outside talent by setting up needless obstacles and red tape. Furthermore, the government's economic policies should encourage firms to be innovative, use new technologies and rethink their way of doing things. Lastly, there are across-the-board economic measures that could favor the sector. In Spain, for example, it is more difficult to close a firm than to start it up. Groundbreaking firms do not always get it right first time; they need to be given the chance of starting anew. Any innovating firm lacking a flexible framework for starting up and closing down, for growing and drawing in its horns, is straight-jacketed in its competition with firms elsewhere in the world where these limitations do not exist. This acts as a brake on Spanish firms' growth possibilities. Is Spain's professional market one of Europe's most competitive? One of the problems of Spanish businessmen is our lack of ambition or grandeur. We need Spanish businessmen to become worldwide businessmen, increase their dimension tenfold rather than 10% a year. In Spain professional services, such as those of a lawyer, economist or doctor, are worse paid than in any other developed country. They are undervalued. I'm told that a Spanish consultancy firm with significant business in England sends over a plane full of Spanish consultants every week because it's cheaper to ship que ninguna nueva idea tecnológica deje de llevarse a cabo por ausencia de recursos. 12 I GMV NEWS nº40 enero 09 them back and forth than pay English rates. Spain is making a big mistake by paying its best prepared, most talented and meritorious people so poorly. Would you like to pass on any special message to GMV? GMV strikes me as a wonderful miracle that I would like to see become more widespread. To my knowledge, and I know a fair bit, it is a brilliant example of Spanish technological and entrepreneurial knowhow. This gives much greater long-term security by spreading risks instead of putting all your eggs in one basket. Not all your business areas are likely to misfire at once. This diversification also has a common trait of business and technological excellence running right through it. You have branched out because you are still exploring new technological fields, drawing on all the synergies set up between them. I urge you to continue down this line and even set your sights higher. I wish you great success and I'm sure you're going to obtain it. cosas bien pagando mal a la gente, más preparada, que más mérito y más talento tiene. AERONÁUTICA / AERONAUTICS SOPORTE EXPERTO EN TECNOLOGIAS DE NAVEGACION PARA EUROCONTROL EXPERT NAVIGATION TECHNOLOGY SUPPORT FOR EUROCONTROL The EUROCONTROL CNS (Communication, Navigation and Surveillance) Research Area has renewed the GNSS support contract with GMV. EUROCONTROL is the European Organization for the Safety of Air Navigation. Since 2005 GMV has been providing EUROCONTROL expert GNSS-technology support with personnel sent to the EUROCONTROL Experimental Centre (EEC) in Paris. This support mainly deals with local augmentation systems called GBAS. These GNSS systems are installed in airports, supplying navigation aids for aircraft approach and landing phases. GMV's responsibilities within this contract extension include: active participation in international working groups dealing with standardization, certification and operational implementation of GBAS systems; generic technical support covering needs related to GNSS technologies as applied to air navigation; maintenance of the PEGASUS toolset that is freely distributed by EUROCONTROL for supporting the operational implementation of GNSS systems for air navigation. Some of these PEGASUS modules were developed by GMV, such as MARS3 for the simulation and analysis of the ground segment of GBAS systems; GNSS performance evaluation and data analysis as input to the standardization processes of GBAS systems. Para resolver las restricciones de capacidad que el ATFM presenta en ocasiones, el sistema opera equilibrando la Capacidad y la GMV is now studying the collaborative planning process of the ATFM system (Air Traffic Flow Management), as defined in the Operations Concept of the Single European Sky ATM Research Program, SESAR, doing so as part of its R&D activities in collaboration with AENA (The Spanish Air and Air-Navigation Authority). To solve the ATFM throughput restrictions that sometimes crop up, the system works by matching throughput and demand: should system throughput fall short of demand, airspace users agree to modify their trajectories by means of a collaborative planning process, to allow for the throughput restrictions. GMV has developed a simulation model that computes a near-optimal solution with a very low latency, allocating en-route and ground delays for all aircraft. It also calculates different KPIs (Key Performance Indicators) after the flight operations, such as, airport throughput, airspace sector throughput and delays. The model has been validated with real data, and incorporates new concepts recently brought into the SESAR framework, such as: Target Time of Arrival (TTA), User Driven Prioritization Process (UDPP), Network Management, Collaborative Decision Making (CDM) and 4D Trajectory-Based Operations (TBO). Due to the design of hiflyviews and EGOS, the adaptation process is limited to the replacement of the external hiflyviews interfaces for telemetry access, real time and otherwise, by the corresponding EGOS interfaces (Service Management Framework SMF and Data Archive DARC). After the analysis phase the project has begun the development phase. 16 I GMV NEWS nº40 enero 09 CENTRO DE CONTROL PARA LA MISION SWARM DE LA ESA CONTROL CENTER FOR THE ESA’S SWARM MISSION ESA's operations center, ESOC, has awarded GMV the contract for the Swarm Mission Control System (SMCS) and the development of the “Earth Explorer Kernel”, in open competition with the agency's other ground system suppliers. Due to be launched in October 2010, Swarm is a three-satellite constellation that aims to provide high-precision measurements of the earth's magnetic field. The SMCS will be based on the existing SCOS-2000 infrastructure and on the Earth Explorer Kernel, a GMV brainchild adopted by ESOC, which implement common functions on a delta basis for all ESA's low orbit missions. The control centers of any new mission will be developed from this kernel, needing only to add on the mission's basic functions. Likewise the SMCS will be the first mission control system to use SCOS-2000's multi-mission characteristics operationally. As well as the actual execution, the project also includes on-site launch-preparation support in the six month run-up. After its successful work with Cryosat I, II and Goce, this new award consolidates GMV as one of the main suppliers of control centers for ESOC's low earth orbit missions. The project, recently begun, represents GMV's first development with a team working close to ESOC in Darmstadt. GMV NEWS nº40 january 09 I pag. 19 ESPACIO / SPACE CONTRIBUCION A LA OPERACIONALIDAD DEL SISTEMA EGNOS DE NAVEGACION CONTRIBUTION TO EGNOS NAVIGATION SYSTEM OPERABILITY EGNOS, the European navigation system that augments GPS for use in civil aviation, will be up and running by 2010. The EGNOS test signal has been available now for three years and can be used by most of the off-the-shelf low-cost commercial navigators. EGNOS came on line back in 1995 and GMV got in on the ground floor. By now it has built up a position as the main supplier of algorithmic components of the European navigation systems, EGNOS and Galileo. After only EADS and Thales Alenia Space, it now boasts the third biggest contracting share in these systems. Although the bulk of the project ended four years ago, GMV has continued to take an active part in the EGNOS system support contracts and also in developing and extending maintenance of the CPFPS and ASQF elements, which were renewed in November. CPFPS is EGNOS's core processing element, receiving the data for generating the information to be sent to the geostationary satellites. Led by GMV, its cumulative effort now represents over one hundred man years, comprising a subrack with 7 processing boards using secure software. The ASQF component is the element that provides support for the validation, certification and evaluation of EGNOS performance at system and user level. It also facilitates security analyses and approach operations for EGNOS-using aircraft. As well as its ongoing contribution to previous projects, GMV is also participating in the development of SPEED with the responsibility for algorithmic navigation and performance-analysis elements. SPEED is the cornerstone of Europe's satellite navigation strategy. It has been conceived as a platform for prototyping and experimenting with new algorithms for integrating the European systems EGNOS and Galileo with Fast Replay capacities and PC/Linux architecture. GMV's input is the calculation center for corrections and integrity. SPEED is now in development phase (V1) due to finish in early 2010. Such is the platform's importance that three installations have now been planned for experimenting with various algorithms: Safety of Life / Liability Critical, a GPS augmentation system in Nordic countries and a high precision positioning system with centimetric accuracy. 20 I GMV NEWS nº40 enero 09 SISTEMA DE DINAMICA DE VUELO PARA LA FLOTA DE SATELITES OPTUS FLIGHT DYNAMICS SYSTEM TO OPTUS’S SATELLITE FLEET focusGEO, a member of the focusSuite family, will provide support very soon to OPTUS's satellite fleet, especially on flight dynamics operations affecting the future collocation cluster under OPTUS responsibility. GMV has a long and proven track record in satellite collocation using focusGEO for different customers such as EUTELSAT (Hot Bird orbital location at 13º East) or HISPASAT (Orbital location at 30º West). For this reason OPTUS has decided to apply GMV’s solution in the new configuration that includes two OPTUS satellites located at the same orbital position. GMV's solution will also solve the compatibility issues between the two collocated satellites, assuring a common and coherent computation of the required orbital maneuvers. The project, recently started, will finish in February 2009 after the installation at OPTUS's site of the proposed solution, properly configured and adapted to the OPTUS infrastructure; this will be followed by a dedicated training period specially geared towards collocation issues. This project is the continuation of previous activities started in 2007 with OPTUS, including the delivery of MATOOL, a system specially adapted for mission analysis of geostationary satellites. GMV NEWS nº40 january 09 I pag. As a member of the International Consortium made up by recognized European Research Institutes in the forestry field, GMV has been awarded a contract by the Joint Research Centre (JRC) for conducting a project with the following main objectives; analysis of the causes of forest fires in the EU, drawing up and proposing a data model to harmonize the causes, conversion and integration of historical data in the new model, geoestadistic analysis of the fire causes and the drawing up and handing over of thematic cartography for its loading in the European Forest Fire Information System (EFFIS). The incorporation of historical data into the new scheme will provide an invaluable source of information, not only for scientific studies (forestry, socio-economic, landscape dynamic, change in land use, etc.) but also for the various authorities responsible for forestry policy, given that knowledge of the space-time distribution of the fire causes will help in the design, implementation and assessment of prevention policies. Finally, it is important to stress how public access to all this information will be extended and enhanced by its integration in the EFFIS, which runs a GIS viewer to meet the standards of the Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) and the EU INSPIRE Directive. The cartographic products will therefore be handed over with the corresponding metadata pursuant to the ISO 19115 Metadata Standard and the INSPIRE implementing rules. DISEÑO DE UN MAPA EUROPEO DE COMBUSTIBLES FORESTALES DESIGN OF THE EUROPEAN FUEL MAP In November GMV won the contract in a tender held by the European Commission's Joint Research Council (JRC) for drawing up a classification of forest fuels in Europe, generating the corresponding cartography and developing an automatic updating system. The interest of this contract resides in the subject of the project and GMV is also coordinating the whole project. Fuel maps are essential in estimating fire risk, modeling fire behavior and calculating the CO2 emitted into the air, depending on the type and amount of biomass affected by the fires. This cartography is to be drawn up for the first time ever in a coordinated, Europe-wide way and the result is to serve as support for the fire-fighting activities carried out by JRC's European Forest Fire Information System (EFFIS). The first part of the project will involve a thoroughgoing review of past fuel classification experiences worldwide, especially in the USA and Canada; identification and compilation of figures (mainly in terms of natural and potential vegetation, topography and bioclimate); and the design of the classification procedure using modeling and validation techniques in a series of selected areas. The second work phase will consist of the development of a Geographical Information System (GIS) to implement the classification previously built up and to be installed in the JRC for the automatic generation of the European fuel map. The GIS will allow users to update the cartography annually by factoring in the surface area affected by forest fires the previous year. RENOVACION DE LA ISO 27001 Y AMPLIACION A LA DELEGACION DE LEVANTE ISO 27001 RENEWAL AND EXTENSION OF ITS SCOPE TO THE GMV'S EAST-COAST OFFICE From Wednesday 3 to Friday 5 December GMV’s subsidiary Soluciones Globales Internet S.A. was externally audited for its ISO 27001-based Information Security Management System (ISMS) renewal purposes, with the assistance of AENOR, Spanish leader in the certification field. The system came through the audit with flying colors, fulfilling the security company's two objectives for 2008: renewal of ISO 27001 certification for its current scope including Madrid-PTM and the Seville, Barcelona and Valladolid offices, and extension of this scope to take in the new East Coast (Levante) offices opened in 2008. This means that GMV Soluciones Globales Internet has now renewed this security certificate for the 5th year running since it was first awarded in 2004. Back then, this GMV’s subsidiary was the first Spanish IT Consultancy firm to implement and certify an ISMS, and consecutive renovation of this certification proves the company's ongoing maturity in this area. It also shows our unflinching determination to achieve top protection levels in all our sites to meet the ever-stricter demands made by our clients. This maturity is also reflected in the excellent results achieved by the companies that turned to GMV for help and consultancy in setting up and/or certifying their ISMSs, tapping into the experience, knowhow, support resources and tools built up and applied for our own Security Management system. The upshot for these clients is shorter implementation times, better security levels and improved management procedures. This spells higher profits and enhanced competitiveness for all our customers. This certification chimes in with GMV’s corporate commitment to Quality, a fundamental part of our genome from the word go. GMV has always been a trailblazer in setting up demanding quality control systems. The offices formerly included in the security certification system are now brought under the UNE-EN ISO 9001:2000 certification umbrella while the Madrid and Boecillo offices have had their UNE-EB ISO 14001 Environmental Management System certified by AENOR. GMV has thus enhanced its performance capacity throughout the whole lifecycle of its productive processes, boosting its competitiveness and responding to the company's overall aspiration of ensuring top quality in all its activities. The metrics used by the system are the number of implants selected, the insertion depth, orientation of the anchorage vis-à-vis the glenoid, the position of the anchors with respect to the tear and also orientation of the grommet. - Rotator cuff examination exercises. One of the most important aspects in repairing the rotator cuff is to check the state of the tissue to be repaired. To carry out this check it is essential to select the right point and direction for pression and traction of the tendon. The aim of this exercise is for the user to find out the type of rotator cuff tear and mobilize it properly. Provision has been made for L-shaped and reverse L-shaped massive tears of the rotator cuff. - Rotator cuff repair exercises. As in the case of instability, users will be able to insert such suture anchors as may be desired for repairing the rotator cuff. Users will place said anchors in the head of the humerus and the system will assess the number chosen, the insertion depth, the orientation of the anchorage vis-à-vis the head of the humerus, the position of the anchors vis-à-vis the tear and the orientation of the grommet. Users will be able to practice with L-shaped and reverse-L-shaped tears of the supraspinal ligament. - Diagnosis exercises. New pathology models have been phased in. Shoulder models now include L-shaped and reverse-L-shaped tears of the rotator cuff while knee models include radial, horizontal and longitudinal meniscal tears, bucket handle tears, parrot beak tears and flap tears. Each institution can personalize the teaching contents of the virtual practice, structuring the training itinerary to suit each group of students. It is also possible to design ECOE type tests for assessing professional skills and speeding up the certification of practical knowledge for foreign specialists. This version is of great interest, both for the trainee surgeons and the people running the specialist medical training. 32 I GMV NEWS nº40 enero 09 INSIGHTARTHROVR EN EL STAND DE LA SOCIEDAD FRANCESA DE ARTROSCOPIA INSIGHTARTHROVR ON SFA'S STAND From 11 to 13 December 2008 Paris hosted the Annual Congress of the French Arthroscopy Society (Société Française d'Arthroscopie: SFA). REPSOL APUESTA POR TECNOLOGIA AIS DESARROLLADA POR GMV REPSOL OPTS FOR GMV-DEVELOPED AIS TECHNOLOGY Image courtesy of REPSOL GMV's work in the application of AIS technology to the maritime sector has taken a great leap forward with this new project won from REPSOL in the port of Tarragona. Repsol's bunkering jetty lies on the seaward side of the harbor walls. Access conditions are therefore critical since it is open to the play of the waves and this needs to be taken into account to ensure correct planning and operation. REPSOL's oil terminal comprises this jetty and single buoy mooring for offloading oil. REPSOL's aim in this new system, with GMV's collaboration, is to improve the signaling system of the single buoy pag. 36 I GMV NEWS nº40 enero 09 mooring and enhance control over the entrance and departure of ships to and from the port of Tarragona and also their relative position to the SBM. There will also be an alarm management system, notice configuration and real time monitoring of the ships. All this will be conducive to safer operation of the oil terminal. The contract includes the deploying of an AIS ground station in REPSOL's jetty, an AIS AtoN in the single buoy mooring plus the necessary applications for monitoring the buoy and maritime traffic in the coverage area of the AIS base station. LA PLATAFORMA SAE-R DE GMV OBTIENE LA CERTIFICACION FERROVIARIA GMV'S RAILWAY FLEET MANAGEMENT PLATFORM OBTAINS ITS RAILWAY CERTIFICATION The onboard railway fleet management platform (SAE-R®) has opened up a whole new market for GMV in the railway world. GMV has recently developed onboard equipment under two fleet management contracts awarded by two departments of Spain's railway system (RENFE), namely 'High Speed and Main Lines' and 'Goods and Logistics'. This equipment has now passed the certification tests to meet current railway standards, giving the company a firm footing in the railway market. The equipment, drawing on GMV's wealth of experience in the bus business, has been designed as standard equipment to be phased into future railway projects, not only in mainline trains but also trams and light trains. The certificates, awarded by an independent laboratory, have been drawn up under the following standards: - UNE-EN 50155: “Electronic equipment used on rolling stock”. - UNE-EN 50121-3-2: “Electromagnetic compatibility. Rolling stock”. - UNE-EN 61373: “Impact and vibration tests”. This type approval process guarantees that the platform is apt for operation onboard any train formation in all its aspects - mechanical, electrical and electromagnetic - ensuring correct operation of the system itself and the rest of the onboard systems it has to work with. GMV NEWS nº40 january 09 I pag. 37 TRANSPORTE / TRANSPORTATION SISTEMA DE BILLETAJE PARA EL TRANSPORTE DE VIAJEROS DE CADIZ ELECTRONIC FARE COLLECTION SYSTEM FOR THE PASSENGER TRANSPORT OF CADIZ GMV, through its subsidiary Masisconvi, has recently signed a contract for fitting an electronic fare collection system in the concessionaire fleets of the urban service of the Cadiz Bay Metropolitan Transport Consortium (Consorcio Metropolitano de Transportes de la Bahía de Cádiz: CMTBC), thus confirming its status as the leading passenger transport technology supplier in the province of Cádiz. The project involves the installation of read and write units, ticket vending machines and a processing unit, including a GPRS device for downloading real-time revenue information at the end of the working day. Before the current project a fare collection solution had been installed for the set of firms operating the bay's interurban transport; the Transport Consortium of Campo de Gibraltar was then phased into the system some months later, forming a total of 7 operators. CMTBC is Spain's only transport organization offering a combined land and waterborne passenger transport network running under the same fare system. Passengers can use both buses and catamarans with the same travel pass. Implementation of these systems facilitated province-wide fare integration using smart cards. These were then gradually phased out by contactless cards to enable even wider fare integration with the neighboring provinces of Málaga and Granada, also equipped with Masisconvi vending machines. The equipment to be installed will allow the Consortium to integrate all published travel credits, speed up commercial operations, cut costs and increase security in all transactions. Furthermore, in the equipment updating process, the operators will be able to integrate existing onboard items such as the bus indication panels or the magnetic card writers. As regards system integration, special stress must be laid on the crucial role being played by the fleet management systems. GMV came into its own here, because one of its main fleet-management clients is COJETUSA, who already uses its fleet management system to run the urban service of Jerez de la Frontera. Integration of Cojetusa's fleet management system with the fare collection system will enable new and important functions to be added on, such as a bus-stop system for recording passing buses (fare integration), timetable synchronization, route information exchange, downloading of settlements or vending-machine screen operation in fleet-management console mode. 38 I GMV NEWS nº40 enero 09 TELECOMUNICACIONES / TELECOMMUNICATIONS DESARROLLO Y DESPLIEGUE DE DOS PLATAFORMAS PARA LA OMV HITS MOBILE DEVELOPMENT AND DEPLOYMENT OF TWO PLATFORMS FOR THE MVNO HITS MOBILE GMV´´s east-coast office has taken charge of the development and deployment of two integration platforms for Hits Mobile, recently set up as a mobile virtual network operator (MVNO). The first platform consists of the integration of Hits Mobile's system with that of its host mobile network operator (HMNO) and the second involves integration of the MVNO with the various recharge providers. Hits Mobile, integrated in Hits Telecom Spain (subsidiary of the Kuwait group Telecom Holding), has recently been launched in Spain as an MVNO. It is geared mainly towards people who have links abroad and are seeking the best rates with a personalized, top-quality service. According to its forecasts, by 2016 over one million clients will be using the services of this new company. The operator Hits Mobile has an agreement that allows it to use Vodafone resources as a host mobile network operator (HMNO). To facilitate integration between the systems of both operators, GMV has developed a platform to converts the protocol offered by the HMNO to the common model used by Hits's BSS and OSS systems, while also isolating said systems from any change in the HMNO interface. To launch itself as an MVNO, Hits Mobile needed to configure its recharge network to allow clients to recharge their cell phone from different points (ATMs, callshops, recharge machines, recharge web...). To do so GMV developed a platform to integrate the MVNO with recharge providers such as Euro6000, La Caixa, Sermepa and Telecor. Its main remit is to unify the diverse protocols provided by the means of payment with the aim of offering a standardized channel for the operator's systems. The two platforms have been designed on the basis of a service oriented architecture (SOA) and are supported by a free-distribution Enterprise Service Bus. GMV NEWS nº40 january 09 I pag. 39 AAPP Y GRAN EMPRESA / PUBLIC ADMINISTRATION AND LARGE CORPORATIONS AYUDA AL CENSO DE GRANJAS CINEGETICAS Y PISCIFACTORIAS HELP IN THE CENSUS OF ANDALUSIA´S GAME FARMS AND FISH FARMS GMV has developed for the Consejería de Medio Ambiente de la Junta de Andalucía a web platform for managing the information of the Register of Game Farms and Fish Farms of the region. The Register of Game Farms of Andalusia is a census of farms spread throughout the whole region. The aim of the Consejería de Medio Ambiente in setting up this register is to manage the information on these farms in a thoroughgoing way. It takes in such fundamental aspects as output and site suitability. Each farm can be authorized for breeding one or more game species, with a scrupulous record being kept of the breeding procedures and facilities in each site. As well as game farms strictly speaking, the information recorded by the application can also be used for running Andalusia's fish farms. The tool, developed with web technology, supports asynchronous HTTP communication and JSON data exchange format. It has been developed from ExtJs, Spring framework, Hibernate, JDBC, Envers and Eclipse BIRT. One of the design aims was to organize the management of the game- and fish-farms in functional menu blocks meeting all the information and maintenance needs on the basis of guided browser scripts. All this is rounded out with a user interface containing enhanced formulae with autocomplete, context validation, calendars and grids, with complete search functions. GMV's proven expertise in developing web management tools and the longstanding collaboration between GMV and the Regional Council of Andalusia (Junta de Andalucía) have stood it in good stead in this project. Now, thanks to GMV's collaboration with the Virtual Center of the Cervantes Institute (Centro Virtual del Instituto Cervantes), it will also be available on XHTML, with double A conformance to WAI guidelines. The Instituto Cervantes, a public institution set up in Spain in 1991 to promote and teach the Spanish language and bring Spanish and Hispano-American culture to a wider audience, was keen to bring Cervantes's magnum opus into line with state-of-the-art technology, with the aim of spreading it even further afield. To that end it is developing this digital edition of the work so that it can be published on Internet in a completely standard and accessible form. Since 1998 1019 pages, 450 images and 22,361 footnotes have been available in HTML at (http://cvc.cervantes.es/ obref/quijote). What the Instituto Cervantes now intends is to convert them to XHTML 1.0 and AJAX technology, to make the great Spanish novel totally accessible with AA and CSS2 compliance. Another aim was to make all this totally compatible with all the operating systems and all browsers, doing so by changing the design and structure of the contents. GMV's relationship with the Instituto Cervantes dates back to 2007 when GMV took charge of setting up a contents management platform for the web portal of the institute's International Spanish Language Congresses and it is still working on this ambitious and far-reaching project today. DESAFIO LUNAR EN EL TEIDE LUNAR ROBOTICS CHALLENGE ON TEIDE The research laboratory of the European Space Agency (ESA) ran a week-long program in which teams from eight European universities competed to design the best lunar rovers for moving over the moon's surface and performing sample return missions. The scene for this challenge lay at a height of over 2000 meters in the site called Las Cañadas del Teide, chosen by the ESA due to its great likeness to the moon's surface. GMV took part in the competition as sponsor of the Spanish team, made up by i ndustrial engineers from the Polytechnic University of Madrid (Universidad Politécnica de Madrid: UPM). The aim of the project, which began in late March 2008, is to seek ideas and designs for future lunar expeditions. The challenge was to carry out a nighttime sample-return mission, whereby each team had to retrieve earth and rocks from a moonlike crater up to 15 meters deep near the volcanic peak called Teide, detect water in any of its forms and then return to the landing site. pag. CAMBIOS EN LA ORGANIZACION DE GMV CHANGES IN GMV'S ORGANIZATION On 14 January Jesús Serrano was officially appointed new CEO of the whole business group. Jesús Serrano's professional career has been bound up with GMV practically from the word go. He began working in Germany in the European Space Agency and then joined GMV in 1986 as a specialist in flight dynamics, taking up posts of increasing responsibility thereafter. In 2001 he was made CEO of the group's aerospace and defense subsidiary. One of his first decisions as CEO has been to split the Space and Defense business into two independent organizations reporting to GMV's CEO at the same level as the other subsidiaries. Manuel Pérez Cortés has been appointed CEO of Defense and Security and Jorge Potti Cuervo as CEO of Space. The aim of these changes is to endow both organizations with the operational autonomy they need to continue growing and expanding, both at home and abroad. In Jesús Serrano's own words, “for a company like GMV it is vital to continue growing, not only in terms of turnover but also in terms of diversity, extension and the level of integration of our range of products and services. This will continue to call for a significant R&D effort, designed to turn existing capacity and “know-how” into viable products and develop new groundbreaking products and technologies to give us a lasting, long-term competitive edge. Where we have built up a position of clear market leadership, my aim is to raise our level of vertical responsibility to make us capable of competing at higher levels of integration. The internationalization of GMV's range of products and services is, to my mind, another key challenge that we need to keep tackling in pursuit of this growth. This applies not only to the markets that are international in themselves, like the commercial space market, where we have now won a leading position, but also those markets that have a local competitive dynamic, such as Defense, ICTs and Transport. To do so we need to continue to boost our international profile and prove ourselves capable of transforming GMV into a fully multinational organization. I also believe that GMV, just as it has done in the past, must keep an open mind in the future to new ventures in new sectors, by maturing the initiatives taken on and pinpointing new markets we can break into on the strength of our greatest asset: innovation.” GMV NEWS nº40 january 09 I pag. 43 GMV EN EL MUNDO GMV IN THE WORLD ESPAÑA / SPAIN Isaac Newton 11 P.T.M.
